Nothing earth shaking here, but clever recipe-oriented web-based search that comes up with some great meal ideas based on what you have handy.

"Deciding what food to prepare is not easy even when you already have ingredients on hand. Fortunately, FoodPair is a nice food meta-search engine that helps you find the right recipe with the ingredients that you have now".

  • One Time Message

5/6/10

Hi people. I love gadgets, but this dynamic has value when sending truly 'sensitive' information.
From The Site - How It Works:

"Once you submit the form you will be provided a "key" that you will have to give to whomever you are sending the message to.

How you deliver the 'key' to them is 100% up to you and we have no involvement with it - nor do we want to! What we will do is send an email to the person with a link to a very specific website where they will need to visit and insert the "key" you deliver to them. This means you can provide them with the key verbally, text message, or in any manner you choose. (The point is pushed in that anyone else who has the 'key'... can read that sensitive info as well. Make sense?)

As soon as the person you are sending the message to reads the message we will purge the message from our database to ensure it can never be read again.

Optionally you can choose to have the message purge itself if it remains unread for a specified amount of time. You can also choose to be notified via email when/if the message is read/purged.

Received A Message?
If you have received a OneTimeMessage from somebody via email you must use the URL within the email you were sent.

Just How Secure Is It?
Here at OneTimeMessage.Com we go to great lengths to ensure that ALL of your information and your messages are secure by using multi-tiered encryption processes which include cryptographic symmetric block ciphers such as blowfish, hash functions such as whirlpool, atmospheric noise random integers, RSA keys (1024-bit) along with a few other methods thrown in to really make it secure! Additionally once a message has been read and destroyed, or it has expired, we purge the highly encrypted message data along with the corresponding salt and passphrase".

Hopefully a little more control in a world trying to steal ours.

  • TweetFeel

5/4/10

Tweetfeel monitors positive and negative feelings in twitter conversations about stuff like movies, musicians, TV shows and popular brands. We display these feelings in a clear and simple way for you.

It compares your search result against a number of indicators to determine whether someone is generally positive or negative towards your term. TweetFeel then applies some "insanely complex algorithms" to make sure your results fairly display the true feelings.

Very cool: As a search takes place, individual tweets appear in the "positive", "negative", or ambivalent categories. It validates itself.

Have fun...? (I suffered a 30 minute addiction to TweetFeel)

HERE IS THE URL YOU PASTE INTO YOUR BROWSER. SiteJabber can't catch the right suffix to web site: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/stain/

Well here's rather pedestrian site. No bells, whistles, or stuff you'll want to rush in a large mailing. But I thought of times I encountered stains and had to Google reliable removal tips.

So here's to the noble art of the mundane, the necessary taking-care-of-business bottom line chores. Cool in a domestic sort of way?

Simply type in a stain, and you're provided with the finest solution the web can manage.

Out damn spot!

Very interesting and potential valuable tool.

A free online service searches for originality (or lack of it) using a few phrases taken from different parts of a document. The phrases needn't be contained within search operators (like quotation marks as the plagiarism checker does it on its own through its code). Content checking is optional with either Google or Yahoo.

There's bound to be a time when this tool becomes invaluable at the office, or when there is a question of doubt!

  • Fleshmap

1/25/10

Fleshmap is not a porn site (sorry - smile), rather a fascinating web site that allows one to explore, in great detail, the areas on the male, and female body, that desire "touch" the most. It's not as simple as one might imagine. Any area is broken down into dozens of smaller details, to fine-tune where the skin is most 'needy'.

From The web site:
"Fleshmap is an inquiry into human desire, its collective shape and individual expressions. In a series of studies, we explore the relationship between the body and its visual and verbal representation.

Touch investigates the collective perception of erogenous zones. We asked hundreds of people to rank how good it would feel to touch or be touched by a lover in different points of the body. The resulting images reveal a map of sensual desire with multiple focal points and islands of excitement. Read more about our method.

While Touch examines collective patterns, Look explores individuality and the hidden surprises that each body reveals when bared. Through a process of abstraction, the piece reveals the multiplicity of formal possibilities contained in a single body part. Contours from different individuals are presented in collections that expose both familiar and oft-overlooked patterns, confronting prototypical notions of ourselves. Read more about our method.

Listen investigates the relationship between language and the body. Verbal manifestations of human physicality in music, poetry, and religion are distilled to their basic elements. In a play with language, the "body rebus" emerges as a visual representation of cultural expressions of the physical in us. Read more about our method."

If you're a skin aficionado, there's a lot to explore here.

  • PC Magazine

1/21/10

The web site I've provided is simply a link to PC Magazine article on how terribly passwords are selected. The most common password revealed, from a hacked web site, was "*******", literally. The exact URL for the article is:
"http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,*******,00.asp" (without the quotations).

I have a suggestion for creating a very secure 'universal password', easily remembered, and assuredly a safer password that what most use - perhaps yourself.

The best passwords have no pattern, are alpha-numeric, and the longer (12-15 characters) the better. However the prospect of deciding on such a phrase, easily recalled - but so difficult to crack, can be daunting.

Try this: Take a piece of information (perhaps an old address that you won't forget) I'll make one up as example: "1584westanywherestreetsandiegocalifornia". Read that carefully and you'll see it's an address. First, that's a nice "long" series of characters. Secondarily it's alpha-numeric, the safest type of password. Here's a trick to make that address harder to crack.

By selecting (or un-selecting - the OPPOSITE of your default keyboard setup - play with this to be sure!) the "Num-Lock" key (one tap), the above address becomes: "1584westanywherestreetsand5eg6ca35f6rn5a". Note the changes in the latter part of that address. That information has been sufficiently "garbled" to be a much more secure password, certainly than what most people use.

Take some time with a text doc., or a Word document, and play with different unforgettable strings of information. Once you've decided on a long string, but a memorable string, play with the Num Lock key and see how it changes the data.

After a bit of fine tuning, you should have an near worry-free password, very hard to crack, created simply by hitting "num-Lock" before typing it.

If you're curious what the Num Lock key does, how it works on different keyboards and computers, you can Google that and get answers. Right now, it's sufficient to jump into a safer universal password you can stop worrying about.

Smarmy web site business robbing the poor. Stay Clear!

Wendy of Lewiston, ID December 16,2009

"I checked into this bank card empire and learned about this "home business". I told the gentleman I had just lost my job and had very little money, but he assured me that for $199 and $19.99/mth, I would have a website and training to sell merchant services.

They waited about a week for more funds to appear in my account before I became a member. I got a packet from them with two CD's that didn't explain exactly what I was selling or for how much. It also said that my website address was on the top of the form which it was not. I was told by the man who I signed-up with that I could do this business by simply talking to local business owners that I knew and then I could advertise as I started making money.

Over the next couple months, I received 7 or 8 more phone calls from different people. I always asked them for my website address, but was told I would be called back with that information (which never happened). With each call, I was asked how much was in my bank account and if I had any credit cards or people to loan me money. The final phone call a man just told me straight out that I couldn't do this business without $10,000 to give them for an email blaster program.

I was told to "call back when I have money". I was treated rudely and abusively on the phonein three different calls.

They took funds out of my account every month and I received nothing.

Another web site seemingly unscrupulously taking advantage of consumers. AVOID these people. In a consumer's own words:

Luis of Belvidere, IL August 31,2009

"On Aug 30,2009 I had found a charge on my credit card I did not authorized. When I visited the website it said-"FREE TUBE VIDEO ARCHIVE - 100% Free Of Charge". It asked for my credit card number to identify my legal age and according to their advertisement the business would charge my card.

I have found out that his business "FREE TUBE VIDEO ARCHIVE" is a scam. It charged my card $37.88. It minds of well have been a million dollars to me. I do not have money to be thrown about.

I had to order a new card that cost me $5.00 + 37.88 + fax to rebut a $10+the threat of ID theft= no amount of money could replace the time, money, and a phone calls i had to make. But put it bluntly it cost me at least $300.00".

I'm one who doesn't care to be "tagged", in every photo which floats across Facebook's visage.
I'm not much a user, and just slightly uncomfortable others can splay my name all over the place. I feel exposed enough out there.

If you're concerned about privacy on Facebook and online in general, you can prevent your name from being suggested when Facebook recognizes you in a photo one of your friends posts.

NOTE: The setting we show you how to change here will only prevent your name from being suggested when your friends post pictures that include you. They will still be able to tag you in photos, they just won't get prompted to do so.

Here's what you do: http://bit.ly/1KQ5jGW.
Hope that helps someone.

Purge the "leftovers" of your relationship that died.

Aside from the actual breaking up part... what to do with leftovers is arguably the smarmy part of ending a relationship. The tangible remnants of being together are everywhere, sweatshirts, an earring, iPods, video games - you name it. Those odds and ends you're 'stuck' with hang there…and while others see them as interesting booty, you don't quite share the sentiment._Interesting start-up may be e-commerce way to rid yourself of those ghostly items. Never liked it anyway is an eBay for break-ups, where you can purge yourself of these items with a little catharsis on the side. Reselling jewelry from these sort of disasters has become a popular business (like Out of your life, which will actually send you a "break-up box" for the process), but what about all the other things that get left behind?_Buyers also benefit: a Mac case is half-priced on the site, with a note explaining that the seller's boyfriend "was never a good listener. Which probably explains why he bought me a Mac Air case… not only did I not have a Mac, I didn't even have a computer yet."_The site relies on humor and heartstrings more than ease of use. The buying process is less technical than Amazon and eBay addicts will like, as it begins by merely messaging the seller to set up the deal via PayPal. And the inventory is lacking at the moment. But the stories of failed relationships are where the intrigue lies, and also what leads to some serious under-pricing._Still, Never liked it anyway is skewed in favor of the lovelorn. In addition to clearing out some space, you get to gripe about your ex—something that won't help your sale over at Craigslist, but definitely will here. You even rate your recovery since the breakup, which include a bevy of emotions like "What break up?" and "Getting drunk too often."

Hope you never have the heart-ache, but interesting place to get rid of quirky stuff.

Sorry to bog the review down with lengthy URLs, but I don't believe SJ handles path info well at all, and I don't want you to get lost!

Drivers are the files that communicate between your SOFTWARE and HARDWARE. Backing-up drivers, is a smart and incredibly useful idea. If your software CD is lost, or the web site you would go to for drivers & upgrades stops supporting your hardware/software, or simply disappears, a Driver back-up & restore suite can save your butt.

These are FREEWARE (no cost at all!) Top driver BACK-UP & RESTORE suites. Be CAREFUL in reading about the different offerings, the pluses and minuses, even do extra research online in making your selections.

Consider passing along to people who "get" this concept, and you'd like to help out. Can be a life-saver.

ALWAYS ASK SOMEONE if you are not absolutely certain what you're doing, understanding, at least check online!
Ron
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is explanation from Gizmo's site. It'; s not always written well (no clue why, they are HIGHLY regarded), but this explanation may help as well:

"Drivers are an important part of the system. They act as intermediaries between the system, and the hardware devices. They interpret the signals, and facilitate communication between the system and the devices. Without drivers, the devices won't work at all, or won't work properly.

Generally, the drivers come on a CD/DVD, with the hardware devices. As an alternative, they can also be downloaded from the manufacturer's site, and that's the best place to download the drivers, or their newer versions.

But, sometimes, the CDs can get misplaced, or lost, or the drivers might not be available from even the manufacturer's site, because they might have stopped providing support for the hardware. In such cases, the driver backup software are like a boon. These software back up the installed drivers for different devices, and even the drivers that come with Windows.

If you have an old system, and do not have a CD, or cannot get drivers from anywhere, it would be a good idea to backup all the installed drivers on the system, including the Windows drivers. Or, even if you have the CD, or the drivers, I will still recommend backing up the drivers, and storing them at a safe place, just in case. Its always better to be on the safe side.

I will also suggest backing up drivers using more than one software, so that if one program is not successful in restoring them, or misses some drivers, the other ones may still be able to do the job.

In this review, I have tried to cover programs which have the ability to backup drivers, and restore them. Some of them do not have the ability to restore, but still do a good job with the backup, and therefore, have been included. Restoring drivers manually, can be a bit tricky, so I have given preference to the programs which apart from backing up, can also restore the drivers from that backup.

Some of these software also have the ability to update the drivers, but I have not covered that in the review. This review is purely based on the abilities of the programs to backup and restore the drivers, and not updating them. As said earlier, the best place to download new versions of the drivers is from the manufacturer's site."

  • FollowUp.cc

8/14/10

I reviewed "followUpThen.com" here a while ago. I was very impressed with the design simplicity, and speed of setting e-mail-based reminders.

The creator of another program, "FollowUp.cc" brought his product to my attention, and it's better yet. This is the way EVERYONE should be setting reminders and reminding others. I asked Chris the designer of FollowUp.cc to explain the basics of creating reminders. Here is his response to me verbatim:_Ron, my apologies for the radio silence. I was actually in and out of the hospital the past 2 weeks, but all is fine now and thankfully nothing to worry about. So, let's get some info flowing finally :)_ "Here's the comparison you asked for:

- FollowUp.cc supports a time component on day of the week and date based reminders, such as: *******@followup.cc and *******@followup.cc. In addition, we also support minutes and military time! So, you could also write *******@followup.cc or *******@followup.cc (notice the period to separate minutes).

That's probably the biggest addition and difference between our syntax and theirs.

- FollowUp.cc also has a lot more utility. Here's the list off the top of my head:

1. You can register and adjust settings (such as Timezone and if you want to store your message bodies etc).

2. There's a calendar view of your reminders, letting you see past ones, future ones, and then even Edit or Delete them.

3. You can have multiple email addresses under the same account which most people do since most people have multiple email addresses

4. There is an RSS and iCal feed of your reminders so you can import them into your calendaring system such as Google Calendar, iCal or Outlook etc.

5. Snooze Links: This is probably the most convenient and best feature people like. The snooze links enable One Click snoozing of reminders which then lets you archive the email and get it out of your in-box.

6. There are a bunch of intelligent logic pieces under the hood such as when a "public reminder is set", meaning in the To or CC field, it will not continue to set a new reminder for each Reply to All by recipients of the email.

7. If you set a reminder on an thread to someone and then set another one, it will update the existing one (assuming the reminder is different). This way you don't multiple reminders set for the same thread (this only works in Gmail or other threaded systems like the new Hotmail).

And there's technically more, but i assume that's good enough for now :) Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Chris".

Highly recommend (to those who needs/enjoys a calendar/reminder system that's absolutely brilliant) a visit to "FollowUp.cc", without the quotes of course.

I don't know how I'd stay on top of things without followup.cc.

Ron.

  • Google Fight

6/23/10

You really have to have your "kid-within" available for the web site. Google Fight was available as a Google widget, some time ago. It's basically two fields in which you can type... ANYTHING, person, place, or object. You then click "Fight" and Google will tell you what won.

The results are based on Google repetition and other sophisticated algorithms. But who care? Google Fight is now it's own web site. You can search the results as an adjunct to the essential FIGHT.

Examples of fights: panasonic vs sony
Books vs television
Males vs females
Bottled water vs american cars

Searches can be virtually anything. When bored... it's another option. Then there are the specific fights: BP Oil vs Earth.

Happy Fighting!

Very cool site that offers video clips (short videos as music videos inclusive) from Youtube, Hulu, and a variety of sources all over the Internet.

KNOW WHAT YOU DRINK: Find Water Polluters Near You

"Across the nation, the system that Congress created to protect the nation's waters under the Clean Water Act of 1972 today often fails to prevent pollution.

The New York Times has compiled data on more than 200,000 facilities that have permits to discharge pollutants and collected responses from states regarding compliance.

Information about facilities contained in this database comes from two sources: the Environmental Protection Agency and the California State Water Resources Control Board. The database does not contain information submitted by the states".
