Best site for gaming, worth the $20 to join - You have to pay like $20/year to join this site, but it is worth it due to all of the great reviews and the ability to participate in the forums. It is often hard to trust game reviews on the internet, but IGN has very reliable reviews.

Great site to find the perfect camera - This is a great site to interact with other people and find the best cameras on the market. Phil Askey the site owner does a good job keeping everything up to date.

Probably some of the best designed gifts for clients and family/friends. They will even custom print your name etched on a glorious wooden box. The foods are delicious and they have been a hit with everyone who receives them. I think this is one of those gifts that clients and referral sources definitely remember.

  • Zaarly

I think everyone who uses craigslist at one point in time has wondered why they haven't made it more web 2.0 and social. Their old model still works and is very easy to use, but that is of course opening the door for these new start ups to create their own version of craigslist. I tried zaarly out and it was very easy to use and intuitive. The only problem of course is lack of users. The small user base right now is great if you are a small business and have services or products to offer as you will receive many eyeballs for what you are selling. I truly hope this particular site catches on.

  • Codecademy

Taking a class and learning something new is typically a boring process and while many people have tried to make educational games in the past, very few companies have truly succeeded in this market. Wouldn't it be great to learn to learn a new skill by playing a game? codecademy.com is making learning how to code into a gaming experience and from the nearly 100K users they have signed up, they are doing a great job. If you are looking to learn javascript, I highly recommend checking it out. Makes me think of rosetta stone for the coding world.

Interesting concept where a laser which when turned to a very specific frequency can eliminate brown pigment in the eye and turn brown eyes to blue. It is similar in concept to laser hair removal, which also selectively eliminates tissue. Their website is still under development but you can watch a video of it here.

Great site for basic information on the HPV test for women and explaining the relationship between HPV testing and PAP smears. Everyone should know about these types of tests and especially women who are sexually active and might be interested in the HPV vaccine. I would also recommend going to the CDC for information on guidelines on when to get the HPV test done. Links here

  • XFINITY TV Go

4/7/11

I had been considering saving some money and cutting out cable tv (specifically comcast) and instead getting a subscription to netflix/hulu/amazon for my movie and tv shows. It was about a combination of cutting costs and being able to watch shows at work, while commuting, and even at starbucks. The deal changer was comcast releasing their xfinity streaming service that works on any pc and my ipad. Now, I can access HBO/MAX/Starz premium shows, network television and on demand movies all because I have a subscription to comcast... and I can access their content anywhere I have an internet connection. This means instead of cancelling comcast and going to the net for my media, I am considering upgrading my comcast and adding premium channels so I can take it on the go with me and probably will no longer be renting dvds. Nice move comcast. The only negative part is their site is still a little buggy especially on chrome, but I have faith they will soon fix those issues.

  • Kickstarter

The basic concept of this site is creative artists getting funding for their projects through pledges. I found some really interesting projects where people had pledged thousands of dollars to help the artist achieve their dream. Great concept and I do hope sites like this succeed and give artists their shot at creating their projects.

  • Amazon

1. Video On Demand: they are trying to compete with netflix/itunes/etc, but here is the problem... while they do have a great selection and reasonable prices the quality of the video cannot even begin to compare to that of netflix or itunes right now. Plus they somehow lack the ability to buffer the video, so if your connection slows during playback the entire video stops. This never has happened to me on netflix or itunes. Did I mention this was on a T1 line? They give you the option to download the movie to your PC if the connection is too slow, but here is the catch, if you started watching the video already you have to pay AGAIN to download the video. So make sure you test out their connection before you pay for their VOD services, my T1 line was too slow for them. I give them a meh rating as of 12/2010 but hope in the future they get their act together. They clearly rolled this out before it was ready in hopes to gain market share of the VOD services.

2. Kindle: here I give amazon a full heart, for books they are doing it right. Very seemless and easy to use. Almost magical in the way you can be reading a book within minutes.

3. books/DVDs: here again they deserve a full heart. Fast service and I do much of my xmas shopping here.

  • Nordic Naturals

11/20/10

There has been overwhelming evidence for people of all ages, but especially seniors to be taking some sort of omega 3 supplementation if people are not consuming it naturally through foods such as fish. People often ask which omega 3 is the best and what it really comes down to is which ones has the least amount of toxins in them. Heavy metals, dioxins, PCBs, etc all contaminate fish oil supplements. Nordic Naturals is a well respected company among physicians and often recommended as a good brand to use.

  • Castello di Amorosa

10/29/10

I have never had the pleasure to visit the UK and see for myself the amazing castles over there. In the US this winery is one of the only places in the states that built a medieval castle that is open to the public. They also have very good wine in their cellars and have events throughout the year. Worth a visit if you ever go to Napa.

  • EarPopper

10/1/10

I must say I have been waiting for someone to invent a device such as this. I would always recommend to my patients who were flying in a plane with a cold virus or allergies to wear special ear plugs that help with pressure problems. (flightmates was one that they could buy in the drug store). But this company has a very interesting concept of just helping one open up their eustacian tube if their are pressure related problems. Great idea and I'm sure it will help many people. I just wish they had invented this product years ago!

  • Ticketmaster

9/5/10

I always worry a little when I buy tickets online as I never know if I am really going to get them or if they are really going to work when you get to the venue. Ticketmaster being one of the oldest ticketing agencies is extremely reputable and delivers electronic tickets by email. Very reliable service.

  • Zinio

8/12/10

Awhile back I got a free subscription to a Sound and Vision on Zinio for my laptop and I rarely ever used it. I didn't really see a need for it and I wasn't sure who would buy a subscription to a magazine for a laptop as it was so much easier to read a real version of it. 2 years later someone gifts me an ipad for my bday and Now I see the beauty of Zinio. I don't want any more paper magazine subscriptions... I only want digital downloads via Zinio... they even have ipad interactive content.

  • Manfrotto School Of Xcellence

6/27/10

Manfrotto (the company that make the high end grips, tripods and photography accessories) have put out an outstanding free website to help people take better photos. Nowadays there are hundreds of websites offering Online Photography Classes and most of them attempt to charge the consumer and still have very weak content. Manfrotto created this free site for everyone to use to help educate new and experienced photographers. They have some of the best photographers around acting as tutors and writing articles to help advance the knowledge base of photography. I have seen Canon and other camera manufacturers put out similar free resources but as Manfrotto doesn't make cameras, this website is in a unique position of discussing all aspects of photography even those that don't rely on selling the consumer the latest and greatest digital camera. They have articles ranging from monitor calibration to pin hole photography.

  • PhysioLogics

6/3/10

There are many different companies out there selling supplements to the public but as this is not a very regulated industry, it is up to the consumer to figure out which ones are of higher quality. I have used this company in the past and they have a wide array of products which are sold to physician's offices.

  • American Academy of Dermatology

6/2/10

For all skin related problems, this is the site I recommend people to visit first in their internet searches. They have a section of the site dedicated to the public here
http://www.aad.org/public/index.html

One of the best self exams on the internet for melanoma detection as a guide can also be found here and if you are reading this, take a minute to read over this part of the site now and then the next time you look in a mirror do yourself a favor and do a mole check.

  • OBGYN

5/25/10

One of the best websites out there focusing on women's healthcare. The site has forums as well as articles written by physicians. They also have a comprehensive section of the site for physician and industry professionals, which is nice because it keeps doctors and other professionals coming back to this site and participating in forums and other parts of the site.

  • Eventbrite

5/13/10

Organizing a large event and collecting money for it in advance is a challenging task and using eventbrite can make things go much more smoothly. They can help organizers collect money in advance as well as promote the event for you. Definitely a useful website and easier than selling tickets on your own.
