thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I shop ThredUp a lot, and basically it's a good site, but often the descriptions aren't accurate, and things like side decorations aren't shown. Side slits aren't shown. Sometimes description is purely wrong - ex. Is a cold shoulder top listed as sleeveless. Fabric is hard to determine, too. Look closely at picture to try to suss out knits vs. shiny stuff, or that pimply poly/spandex blend. Don't depend on colors being true in pix. They, or your monitor, can be off. Size chart isn't always accurate. Asian 2X is not what chart says. Just shop carefully and remember you'll pay $2 for "oh, I didn't look that closely" returns.

Can be tricky
May 23, 2021

Pros- This site can be good for designer finds. If you are in the market for a silk gown or something that you wouldn't normally be able to afford, Thredup is a godsend. I've found several good quality finds that I'll continue to cherish. I keep my eyes on a few particular designers and will sometimes find a real gem. My recent find was a Yoana Baraschi dress that would usually retail around $350 for $26.50, still brand new with tags.

Cons-
1. I've sent in about a half a dozen bags for "re-sale" and its always the same song and dance:
a. They only accept less than half of what you send, and you will need to pay to get whatever does not sell back.
B. Unless it is a designer label, you will not get much for a payout.
C. They take FOREVER. Returns also take some time.

2. They have a re-stocking fee when you need to return an item

3. Some of the cheaper items that I've purchased were in piss poor condition. For this reason I tend to stick with items that have "new with tags" listed or make sure it is available to be returned if needed.

4. It's not always that great of a deal. I was recently looking for basic tank tops and noticed that most of what is available on Thredup is around $8-$10, I went to the mall and found brand new (decent quality) ones for $5.

Handbags are also non- returnable items.

I give ThreadUp a solid meh.

I love the concept and have gotten some reasonable deals using their discount codes (Coach wristlets for $40). I feel like the expansive inventory and filter functions could be great at saving someone time if they had something specific in mind. I've never experienced an issue with discrepancy in descriptions or shipping either - everything has always arrived as stated, on time.

However, I feel like for the items being sold second-hand, the mark-ups can border on being unreasonable. I acknowledge Loft, Madewell, Anthro, JCrew, etc. are so much brand-new, but when they're out-of-season pieces and I find the same items at my local Goodwill for $2.99-$4.99/each, the argument doesn't hold.

In conclusion, my personal feelings are that if you're willing to spend a little time browsing racks, you could easily get 4/5 items at your local thrift store or garage sale over the $20 ThreadUP can be trying to charge for one. Bonus points, you'll save the Earth by eliminating all the shipping travel and packaging!

Plus, Goodwill, St Vincent de Paul, and my neighbors are all causes and people I want to support. I have no idea who is profiting at ThreadUp and regardless, it probably won't impact me or my community directly.

Thredup is a real scam. I sent a a clothes kit with a new pair of swede Manolo Blahnik boots and they never appeared on my selling list. I also sent two other Manolo Blahnik shoes, that were practically new and they were never listed. Thredup must sell the designer items to make a profit for themselves a terrible thing this company is doing, totally fraudulent.

Rip off...
May 5, 2021

I am an avid shopper and hunter for gently used classic clothing. I made the huge mistake of ordering what appeared in photos to be nice pieces. In retrospect I should have ordered one piece first to get a feel for what merchandise was like and sizing. I was shocked to learn that each piece that didn't work came with a $1.99 restocking fee! For used clothing? I only wish I would have read that prior to purchase. In addition, to send back merchandise for a refund I have to pay roughly $8.00 for label to return. I kept one "little black dress" with tags still on and a casual striped T shirt. The rest of the order
Etiher looked shabby or didn't fit. On line photos lie! I will NEVER return to THRED Up once this is resolved. Folks read between the lines and all fine print prior to ordering. Lesson learned! If i could rate accurately would give a firm O.

Thred up is not a site I recommend. The clothing I've received has always been in very poor condition, and the returns process is difficult. I bought a top in "gently used" condition, it had torn seams in the bust area and was covered in the previous owner's hair. Another nwt top was smaller than the described measurements. The return process is made difficult by thredup. Either you pay to ship the items back yourself for a full refund, or they give you a return label for store credit. I don't want store credit for a service i'm not going to use again, and don't want the hassle of having to diy ship. I think i'll stick to other consignment places with higher standards and accurate product descriptions.

Many items were not as described. A pair of jeans was listed as high rise and came as ultra low rise. Several were listed as like new and we're terribly used. Several items had a horrible odor. Return policy is horrid. Customer service is horrid. Brought most things to a thrift store. Well never buy from them again.

I bought three handbags and two are great but one must have been owned by a smoker and reeks of smoke. I never thought of this as a potential problem in buying secondhand clothes online. I bought two dresses -- one is very nice but the other has what looks like ink or grease streaks on it.

So I just bought a gorgeous bag off Threadup for the first time. I am aware that things ship out of the US and that I will duties to pay but they will be low as I got a great deal on the purse so it still was a great buy in my opinion. After the discount I recieved for being a first time buyer and with the shipping cost my invoice states I paid 66.99 in total not including duties which I pay in Canada. So after a few hours I checked my bank account and they had already gone ahead and taken from $88, not $66.99. Wtf! They sent me nothing indicating I would be charged a higher amount and therefore I did not consent to this charge being taken from me. Now it's more then a 20$ difference, without informing me of this and this is completely unacceptable. They don't understand that some people save up for months to treat themselves to something and that some of us have very tight budgets where $20 actually is a significant amount to be screwed out of. For my first experience I would say this has ruined it and I will never buy from them again. I've contacted customer support telling them to fix it and charge me what my invoice says or I will call my bank and do a reverse charge as I did not give consent to this charge. If I have too I will go to the BBB with my complaint, companies can't get just get away with charging whatever they want without telling the customer. Horrible experience, horrible company and horrible treatment of customers. Hopefully they do the right thing and fix this but I don't recommend this site for Canadians at least unless your willing to be charged more then what you think you paid for the item.

First time ThredUp Customer. I purchased a product I've been wearing and buying for over 20yrs. The lable had to be wrong becuase they did NOT come remotely close to fitting. In fact I bought same brand and style off Poshmark and Thredup but ThredUp pair was COMPLETE WRONG SIZING and Poshmark version was perfect. I was n correct time window and executed my ThredUp return... however, I had a credit issue. The ThredUP Customer Service still hasn't replied. Thye NEVER replied to my emails nor my voice messages nor did the CEO evern respond to the direct message I sent him via LINKEDIN. Will never buy from this Co. Again.

Terrible business
March 25, 2021

I would leave a -1 if I could. I sent my bags in 8 months ago and they have yet to be processed. When I click the link they are no where to be found. My friend sent a few bags in and are giving her. 30 cents to. 60 cents for new clothes that have tags on it. Don't support this crap business. Donate! The $3.87 isn't worth their crappy business platform.

I just got my first purchase from threup. So disappointed. They sent me a child's shirt, not an adults. Returning stuff is such a pain and so costly that I gave it to my neighbors daughter. Never again.

Cliche, but this the first time I've ever been inclined to write a review of online shopping.
Years ago, I used to have orders shipped to a US postal box as they only shipped within the US. When I no longer had access to the PO Box, I stopped ordering. It was disappointing as I loved everything about it, cheap, decent clothing!
Now, several years later, I see that they are shipping to Canada! It's great until I go to check out, it won't recognize my address and so I wait for business hours to get it fixed, FAQ says my account is set to US and to contact customer service to change it.
After several hours of back and forth during business hours, they finally got the account switched to a Canadian one. It was all fine I said, I just didn't want to lose my cart! I managed to keep grabbing the items back as the time limit in the cart ran out without losing anything, but now I cannot purchase most of my cart because only one of their warehouses ships to Canada. Ok, bit of a headache, but I redo my shopping and attempt checkout again.
After the cart flip flopped from saying my shipping was free to giving me two shipping options of $38 or $75, it settled at free as I checked out for $137 on PayPal. After confirming $137 on PayPal, the order on thredup is automatically confirmed, but now at $202! The most expensive shipping option was applied without approval, when it had said free.
Talking with them again, I was understanding that international shipping wasn't free, but upon asking if I can at least change it to receive the cheaper shipping, they say there isn't a cheaper option, there is only one option for international shipping. I added a few things to a new cart to test, and sure enough, it gave me TWO options, $21 or $11! After sending screenshots, they now admit two options do exist, but they still can't change it.
Ok, is there anything you can do, a credit for the difference in the two shipping options?
No. Nothing we can do for you.
A ton of headaches and I'm out $75 more than I agreed to. Oh, wait, that's in freaking USD! No where did it say all prices were in USD. Just an overall bad experience.

I've bought and sold to thredUP and will neither again. I paid $73 for J. Crew dress that was supposed to be "brand new with tags" but it came with a huge stain on the bodice. I couldn't get through to a complaint department even though I followed all the directions. Previously I sent a bag of consignment items that included two brand new cocktail dresses - one with crystal beading- from Neiman Marcus which they claimed were unbranded and supposedly never sold. Also brand new Vionic flats didn't sell nor did Ferragamos, I don't believe them. They had the nerve to charge me to "buy-back" my own clothes! This is BAD BUSINESS and I highly recommend you go elsewhere.

Horrible
March 1, 2021

I would have felt a whole lot better if I had donated them as well cause I only made $. 50 from the app and is said to only be getting $31 after Sending in 17 items I had no idea they would take most of the money they had placed on the items after sales. It's such a waste of time, I wish there was an option for no star. KMT, judgment day is coming for all you scammers out there rubbish. My evidence is attached so y'all can see they price them for a lot and send u pennies. This is bulls***.

Wanted to love it, but absolutely not worth it :(
February 25, 2021

First off, I love any vintage/secondhand shopping so I was so excited when I discovered this site! The actual website is really great to shop on and dig through for gems, so I decided to finally place an order. I live in Canada and shipping took over a month. The website says international shipping takes 4-9 days so I reached out to customer service and they confirmed that everything was fine and it wasn't lost. Then when the package finally reached my city, the tracking said "attempted delivery" and then "returned back to sender". I live in a building with a 24/7 concierge so there is no way the delivery was attempted and failed, and on-top of that there was no note saying delivery was attempted. So I reached out to customer service again saying that the package was being returned to sender and I didn't know why, they assured me that it wasn't being returned to sender and it would be delivered by the end of the week. I continued to track the package and next thing I know it is delivered to some warehouse in the USA claiming it has reached its final destination. At this point I was pissed off after being assured that the package would be delivered to me, so I just wanted a refund. After reaching out to customer service a final time, my refund came for the wrong amount. My original order was $82.05 and the refund was only $77.17... Now customer service says that it is probably a mistake and that I should keep checking for the real refund to come in... I am so disappointed because I love this site but between the nightmare of customer service, international shipping (which I have never had a problem with before), and overall disorganization I can't recommend it.

I live in canada and when i order about a week later i got a call saying i had to pay 23 more dollars for my order for shipping, i was very upset and in that moment blamed it on Thredup but they clearly stated they do not cover shipping or what happens with shipping. Do i wish i was told this before yes especially since it was my first time ordering from out of canada besides amazon, but i cannot get mad at them for that. Once i did get my order i loved the clothes, there very cute just like picture, true to sizes, brands were correct and i saw nothing wrong with the clothes no stains no rips nothing. I orderd 3 shirts 2 skirts and one dress. So other then shipping i do love the clothes very much.
