ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Just received my Nike shoes ($40) which were listed as being in such good condition I would think they were brand new. Definitely NOT. As soon as I opened the bag, they smelled sooooooooooooooo bad. Someone had a problem and I cannot believe that the quality assurance team didn't smell this. Also there was no protective covering just the shipping bag which is extremely thin, and my delivery person had shoved it tightly in my mailbox. I'm glad I didn't buy something more expensive that could have gotten ruined based on their shoddy wrap job. I'm not going to pay their silly restocking fee to return so I threw them straight into the trash. After reading all the other reviews, I don't expect a good experience as a seller either. That's ok because I discovered Plato's Closet and Clothes Mentor and was VERY pleased as a seller at both of those stores.
I sent a large amount of clothing to this company for consignment. They accepted 1 item out of all of my like new clothing and were going to list that 1 item for 10.99 with me making a profit of 91 cents! And then I'm supposed to pay them 10.99 to get my items back, telling me my account is now in the negative 10.99 and will not make a profit off of the one item. They scam you of your clothes for their own profit once they accept. Will never use this company for consignment again. Only gave one star for the amount of items available to purchase on the site. Otherwise zero stars for this one. I should have just donated to Goodwill.
Firstly, they do not provide enough info on items (pockets, length of shirts, etc.). Secondly, I don't understand their payout system. I have purchased items that are in horrible shape, and yet items I send in are in very good shape, but are rejected. Even some of their pictures of items look like they've been rolled in a ball for years. Thirdly, they are slooooowwww. They take forever to ship (and they don't offer free shipping) and even longer to process a clean out bag. It's not really worth the amount of time it takes without any guarantee or assurance that your items will sell and that you'll make a decent amount of money, and when you purchase, that you're actually getting what you hoped for.
I placed an order. It's been 10 days and it's still not here. FedEx finally posted today, a possible delivery date of Friday, which would make it 12 days. I'm way to use to ordering and getting an item in 2 days or less that this just seems absurd. Sorry but the items aren't worth a 12 day wait. I could have gone to my favorite thrift store and found what I needed in the meantime. Sadly, my package Zf may not even get here in time for my vacation. Buyers beware … I love the thrifting concept but they need to improve upon their delivery.
Like everyone else over the last 16 months I've bought very few clothes. A few things for work, t-shirts, a pair of shoes, mostly at Target, When I started wearing short sleeved shirts this spring, I felt the desperate need to clean out my closet, and when I did, I realized I had nothing left to wear. Then I found ThredUp. I bought 5 items. 4 of these items were unacceptable. All were listed as "in excellent condition". That was absolutely not true. I worked at a Twin Cities Goodwill for 4 years and I know the difference between excellent condition, good condition, and just ok condition. Three of them were acceptable, one was excellent, and one was poor. I got the feeling they've been telling customers what they want to hear, regardless of the condition. Now I'm stuck with 2 final sale items and am returning two more before the return date is up. I NEVER write reviews and very rarely return items.
But I feel like this is an exceptional situation. When I shop thrift items, particularly clothing, it has to look new, or it has to actually BE new. Well, they claimed it looked new. But they lied. The jeans had a ripped zipper. The Delia shirt and tank top had little balls all over them. And the v-neck t-shirt was extremely stretched out.
The only thing that worked--perfectly--were The Limited capris that I purchased. There wasn't mark on them. I could have pulled them off a rack in the store. Except I got them for $12. Those I'm keeping.
I was going to send them a giant clean out bag full of some really expensive "rare" clothing, but now I think I'm going to sell most of it on Poshmark, so I can make my money back faster than I lost it.
Holy smoke, I have never had such a difficult time reaching someone in the company. I bought a dress for $130.99 which was originally $140.99, but I received at $10 discount. They sent the dress. I promptly tried it on found that it was too small, and put it back in the box. Therefore, I returned it in the same condition that I bought it. I got an email that I only got $32.99 credit. I did not damage this garment, so I don't know how they could justify keeping almost $100 of my money.
I recently made my first Thredup purchase and got over $200 worth of maternity clothes. Only 3 items fit, so I went to return the other items and I'm being charge $1.99 to restock each item?! That's crazy to me. Then when I processed my return, the option for a free label was there, so I chose that. In the fine print that was the option for Thredup credits which I most certainly do not want. So the FAQS says to contact customer service. I sent an email to which the site states that they are behind on emails and may take up to 3 days. The site suggests the CHAT option. There is no chat option? If the restocking fee wasn't enough the lack of support was the final straw. I will not buy from Thredup ever again and will share this review with as many others as I can!
I've just read through some of the reviews. Wish I had before I shipped off my "kit". Took 2 months to process. Prices incredibly low. Haven't gotten any pay-out and now don't expect to. At least 4 things that were practically new never made it for sale without any notice to me. I read here that they don't accept some things because they have to "balance" their inventory. If these were in fact donated, why not give an accounting of that? Seems like an opportunity for theft if you ask me. Will never use them again.
This company is a total mess. I wish I would have read the reviews before I sent my designer items to them. Plus the prices that they had the items listed for was unbelievable. Also never received my items back and and told me I picked to have them donated I would have never done that. I tried to retrieve it to see and there was nothing. I addressed that also to someone that was going back and forth through email. The company will reap what they soul. I would never ever go back to this company. To see how much they made during the pandemic was more upsetting. How do you treat people like that. I'm sure the owner he reads the reviews or has someone for him. Just waiting to see if they will be on the news channels soon. A total rip off.
Fake fake fake! I ordered a coach handbag and wallet that were supposed to be authentic. I paid160.00 for the product they said listed for 489. It sounded about right and looked great, after receiving the bag and purse... I touched the almost plastic-type material and I knew it was fake. It's Horrible, cheap, unreturnable, and no Refunds are giving. It's going to goodwill, and I will Never purchase from thredsup Again. Lesson learned. I wish I could attach a picture
I will not be using Thred Up to sell my used clothing going forward. They received a clean-out kit from me on 3/27 which has still not been processed. Each month it gets moved out 30 days and now indicates it will be processed by 6/21. When I wrote to them they stated the average turnaround is 15-25 weeks -- that's 4-6 months! At this point I will either use a local consignment shop or donate my clothing to the Salvation Army or Goodwill. I understand that COVID has had an impact on many businesses. However, in my opinion a 4-6 month turnaround is not acceptable. Beware before you send in your Clean-Out kit -- you will be waiting for a very long time -- not worth the wait!
I sent a clean out bag with clothes, all new with tags, in and received such a minimal payout it was disturbing. When I tried to get the remainder of my items returned to me I had a heck of a time contacting a real person who could help me. When an email was finally replied to, I was told they could not send my clothes back because it was a contract. So, for hundreds of dollars of new clothes and a designer purse I received less than $50. Even though I pre-paid for my clothes that didn't sell to be returned to me, I could not find a way to get that accomplished. Customer service is non existent and the website for sellers is difficult to navigate. BTW where to they get the numbers for resale prices?
I TRIED AND TRIED TO RESET MY PASSWORD AND NO LINK APPEARED IN MY EMAIL. AND YES, I DID VERIFY MY ADDRESS. I WOULD LOVE TO SHOP BUT WILL NOT SHOP ON A SITE THAT CAN'T BE ACCESSED. TERRIBLE BUSINESS!
My order took almost 2 weeks to arrive, actually I forgot that I had ordered. The size was wrong and I wanted to return but the hassle and me having to pay restocking fees, shipping of $8.99 and shipping cost to return is waste of time and money. I decided to donate as I was losing my cost to buy anyway, saved a trip to the post office. Sorry to say not buying or selling here again.
They steal your clothes and your money. Buyers and sellers beware and read ALL the fine print before doing any business with them. Stick with Ebay or Poshmark or donate
Thredup will put items in your cart charge your card and ship to you without your permission! When I notified them they didn't deny that it happened! Thredup tried to keep my money for up to 3 days until my bank got involved! Now they've done it again!
2 bags of designer bags, shoes & clothing equated to $45.96. Company is a joke and I'll never use them
They legit, do steal items here, doesn't matter if your selling, buying, ect, ect, BBB website, doesn't even have there actual contact information, if it wasn't for me knowing code, finding contact information for my bank (so 400$ wasn't stolen from) would of been impossible!? My GoodyBox was damaged, Gorgia fedex (terrible place) refused to help me, they gave Thredup 20 days, to get there product, (took them 24) and I ended up having 400$ being "prossessing" my bank disputed it, as "fraudulent" got a email THE NEXT DAY. Resolved, but then, after doing the math, (pretty simple stuff) they still stole money - so I just changed my card- These people, whoever they are, should not be business. What they do, is illegal, notice the only good reviews, are fake reviews, promotional/paid dor? How this millionaire d bag, doesn't have a class action lawsuit against him yet, is beyond me.(contact info from website coding in pictures)
I ordered over 20 items from them got charged for all the items only to finally after what seemed like forever wait received only 4 of the actual items I ordered. I tried to contact them but only was able to do so online there's no way to actually talk to anyone and was told they would investigate. What does that actually mean? If I'm a new customer and this is my 1st experience with this company you would think they would want to rectify the situation immediately not put me on some run around hold. I've never experienced this with any other company in my life when it comes to buying online which is the new way of shopping. I vow to make sure I write my review as many times as I can to warn people of this horrible risk they're taking with their hard earned money in dealing with this company.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
