About Me

Except for the two years at Umass, Amherst, I've lived my life in Maryland. My career was spent in higher ed teaching figurative sculpture and ceramics. Two grown sons and two cute dogs (the one pictured is named Popcorn), plus some exes. I'm very generous with panhandlers and I pick up stray dogs. I am extremely worried about the disparity of wealth and the danger it poses to Democracy and freedom in the US.i.e. our current President. I'm extremely curious.

How I Can Help

I know a great deal about art and ceramics. I'm a trained mediator. I know a fair amount about plumbing, carpentry, electrical work and cooking.

Interests

, reading and making things, I'm a sculptor. I really like to travel

My wife and I are big fans of on-line shopping; my guestimate is that with the exception food, we make 95% of our purchases there. We've purchased cars (carmax), pets (our adorable dogs), appliances (home depot), books (kindle), clothing (nordstroms et al) and etc. So, our review of Nordstroms comes with a fair degree of experience. In fact, I'm fairly certain that they count on her patronage. First the Pros: Generally high quality merchandise, a larger selection than found in the store, shop 24/7, easy comparison shopping, great customer service,(you can actually talk to someone), quick delivery, free shipping, free and easy returns (the items come with a return label). Now the Cons: I can't think of any, although they can do serious damage to ones credit limit!

This review primarily applies to appliance purchases. Over the past ten years I've purchased ten appliances from HomeDepot; their prices are competitive and they seem to carry the brands favored by Consumer Reports. While I've gone to the store to examine the item (recommended); I have completed the purchase on-line which has included scheduling its installation and removal of the old. The process has been seamless and easy with delivery being as promised with the installers doing a careful and efficient job. My most recent purchase was for same day delivery and installation of a hot water heater. It was ordered by 9:30 am, delivered at 2:00pm! A bit pricey for the installation but

I decided to alter my review to give praise to technical support. Computers are great until there's a problem and you need technical support. As someone who grew up with a black, corded, rotary dial telephone when it comes to computer jargon, I'm not at the top of the learning curve. Apple on-line support is without doubt the best I've encountered. Unlike many other tech reps who's english language pronunciation skills are marginal at best, who often are impatient and who lack the ability to clearly explain things Apple reps are smart, pleasant, patient and dedicated to helping you solve your problem. I'm not going to list all of the benefits of owning an Apple computer, I will just say that should you have a problem, you can rest easy knowing that excellent help is just a phone call away. In store service is also excellent but do make an appointment!

  • Amazon

Perfection is seldom achieved and Amazon is no exception. That said I have found their site to be an effective search tool and purchases/returns are handled efficiently and quickly. When one considers the scale of their operation it really is quite amazing that it doesn't have more snafus!
Recently, I called Amazon about a $70 product I purchased that said "no returns". Maybe I should have been suspicious? Amazon customer service said, "No problem, just throw it away and we'll refund your charge". Although Amazon does not pay many of their employees a living wage, that was great customer service.

When placing my order the staff at 4seating was very helpful. But it wasn't until I had a problem that they showed just how helpful they could be: About three months after I received the chairs(2) one of them had a problem with complete "closure". I contacted 4seating and within a week they had sent a local repairman to my home. Upon inspection he determined that the chair was broken and could not be repaired. Without any hesitation, questions or delay, they ordered a replacement. I had to pay the shipping ( I hadn't "paid" originally) but I thought that was more than fair since the breakage may have been caused by me. (It's certainly possible) I felt that I could recommend 4seating to family and friends being confident they would receive great service and high quality products; the chairs are great.

If you are interested in purchasing artwork through an auction, this site lists auction houses and their offerings from all over the world. These are live auctions you can "attend" and bid. I've used the site a number of times and have been satisfied with the process, A cautionary note. If you have never attended an auction I suggest you participate in a few and do some mock bidding. This will give you time to become familiar with the prices and more importantly you will reduce the possibility of over-bidding when it's your real money. Only bid on things you really like. Don't forget the dealer's premium and shipping cost have not been added to your bid. Good luck.

The site is not easily navigated. Many un-needed items (700+)jumbled within a specified search category. Trying to narrow a search is often pointless.
I had a question. The first product specialist was supposed to call back but didn't. The second prod. Spec. Called back twice but with incorrect info. The third prod. Spec. Knew less than the first two! All were very pleasant but were apparently being given incorrect info. Product range is quite good, thus the four stars.

  • Coyote Clay & Color

12/16/18

FYI, I am a university trained ceramic sculptor with over 50 years experience. If you are reading this you likely already know that Coyote Glazes produces a line of ceramic glazes for a variety of firing temperature. I purchased several of their cone 6 glazes including a shino glaze and they all worked well. Several months later, I went to use them again only to find that the shino glaze ingredients had formed small hexagonal crystals, thus rendering the glaze useless. In all my years in ceramics I had never heard of or seen this happen. I contacted the company about the problem and they explained that it said on the package, (in very small type), not to store below 65 degrees. I pointed out that something that important should have a more highly visible label. The owner agreed and sent me replacement product at no cost. Yet again my faith in humankind is reinforced.
SUGGESTION: The thickness of the liquid glaze in the bucket is very important for consistent and predictable results. If you don't know already, find out what a hydrometer is and learn how to use it. Forget the-glaze -should coat-your -hand business.

The comice pears they sell are usually delicious. Once you eat a ripened Comice pear (peeled) you will never go back for any other. We eat them with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, a splash of brandy and whipped cream. That said, at $5-$10 a pound plus shipping they should be fabulous! Should your pears prove to be less than perfect, a quick call to Harry and David and they will send a replacement to your door free of charge! The price is high; but you know the recipient will receive a quality gift.

Some good: Dvd selection
Some bad: Streaming selection
Some ugly: New rating system that uses an algorithm to rate movies by which it
Determines my preference
Solution: Rate using customer evaluations; then I can select with confidence.

A $17 shipping charge on an $80 a product that came in its own shipping package is ridiculous! But the item is guaranteed forever. I've used their return policy and they do support their warranty.

A quick description: Ordered two 3v lithium batteries which were available at a very low price (pos). The shipping was a bit costly (neg), thus the four stars. They arrived in a timely fashion with a follow-up email asking about their service and the product. Simple and easy.

I am 71 years old and met my wife when I was 65. It took almost two years to find each other but worth the effort. We're a perfect match and we've never been happier. While I would agree that some of my matches left me wondering what criteria were used; all of these sites rely on user honesty. I'm sure that lack of self esteem and loneliness can contribute to misrepresentation. Regardless of site, be patient; the person who is looking for you may be tomorrow's match. Suggestion: If possible, expand your geographic range. What might seem impossible in theory may become very possible for the right person; I'm from Maryland and my wife was from Ohio. Update: sixth anniversary; never been happier

I purchased a dozen regular wooden base mouse traps. I then bated six of them with peanut butter. The Mice ate all of the PB but I caught only one mouse! I then bated them with a sticky caramel and added a smear of PB. Still had an 80% failure rate. I contacted the company not looking for replacement but maybe advice. No suggestion but offered to replace them but only if I had a receipt. Really? To be so stingy with an item that retails for about 50 cents each suggests to me that this company cares little about customer satisfaction. One also has to wonder how well they pay their employees. Penny wise pound foolish.

  • HelloFresh

I originally wrote a lengthy review and have decided to revise it. Pros: Convenient, ingredients are well prepared and packaged, portion sizes are good, a good introduction to cooking for the novice. Cons: The food is at least twice as expensive as store purchased, way too much packaging, you still have to cook it, the recipes are a bit bland and the process for cancelling your subscription is I believe intentionally a bit vague. How to decide: Do you have enough money to pay for the convenience. Remember, you will still have to go to the store.

Tip for consumers:
Take some time to understand just what you are receiving and how much it costs.

I recenty purchased/won a set of antique glassware and all went smoothly until I was informed by Sotheby's that one of the glasses was broken and a damaged one could be repaired. Their offer was to repair the damaged item and reduce the buying price on a pro-rated basis. There was no consideration for my need of a specific number 0f glasses or the fact that I might not find the repair to be acceptable. This resulted in numerous back and forth emails in which I countered with a request a full refund. For a while it appeared as though their offer would be one of take-it-or-leave-it. It was only through my insistence and and the help of an understanding employee that I prevailed and was given a full refund. The lesson is, be persistent and make a good and reasonable argument.

The site was easily used and the product arrived in a timely fashion.
The low quality of the tee shirt, printed in only one color, was less than expected. There was a misspelling DOH!.

I received a list of possible companies. They either didn't call or when they did they didn't do what I specifically said I needed. Rather than waste time with this company, I would advise using a simple google search.

  • CuddleDown

8/11/19

I purchased a set of rather expensive sheets from "Cuddledown". By the time I received, opened and washed them, I decided I will look for another company. Why, you ask. The answers: Their internet servers are extremely slow, some time never moving to the next page. That required me to go back and start again... ugh.The shipment, from I think Maine to Maryland took eight days. I'm assuming it came via conestoga wagon! The slow shipping cost was $21.99 for approximately 5 lbs. The US PostalService charges $14.50 for up to 70 lbs for a first-class flat-rate box, which they supply. I suspect Cuddledown's packing, which entailed throwing the sheets in a box, applying a pre-printed label and tape and then placing it on a truck costs, the company no more than $8 including under-paid labor. That leaves a net of $14.99. Apparently shipping is a profit center. Now for the salt-in-the wound. After washing them, I noticed the flat sheet was a King size... again ugh! I spoke to customer service in the Phillippines and there is no need to tell you what that conversation was like. Their solution was for me to return the sheet with a shipping label they would send in 4-10 business days. Again by wagon? Upon receiving the sheet they would then send a replacement. Based on past experience, I estimated it could take as long as a month to receive my replacement. When they finally acknowledged that waiting a month to use newly purchased sheets was ridiculous, they agreed to simply send a new one. Would you be willing to go through that process to buy a set of sheets? I know I won't do it again.

  • The Libman Company

They describe themselves as family owned but it must be the family down the street from you that leaves their dog outside when it's freezing and never cuts their lawn. Simply put, I wrote to them about a problem I was having with one of their products.
No response.
