ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Great experience shopping, good prices and a lot of nice products to choose from.
I will start off saying I have never purchased anything from thredUP. But I likely never will. As a reseller I have noticed their descriptions can be incomplete or just completely wrong. I've sent things where they have put the wrong brand and size in the descriptions. They also don't take many pictures of items so you don't know what you're really getting. It's a very lazy way of listing items in my opinion. If you are trying to make a few bucks don't count on it. Even if they didn't take 90% of your profit people buying the items are not going to pay the listed prices for how thredUP describes and portrays items. You never really know what you're getting.
As mentioned above they take A LOT of your profit. Unless you have Louis Vuitton or Gucci you literally get pennies for your items. And you can sell LV or Gucci (and the like) for much much more on other sites and retain more profit on them. ThredUP is not great for high end brands. You get more of the profit but the sale price is often much lower than it could be elsewhere.
And they have been taking months to process clean out bags. They are blaming covid19 but I have not had this experience with anyone else during this time. ThredUP went from taking a few weeks to 5-6 MONTHS. It will do no good to list summer clothes in October.
I asked to get my bags back but they said they had to process them anyway. That makes no sense.
Sellers beware. You will NOT be happy with this service.
We're truly sorry to hear that your Clean Out experience wasn't as you expected, Kelly. While most people are not going to make as much with thredUP as they would with other resale sites, we pride ourselves in being the most convenient to clean out your closet and find new homes for items you're no longer loving. We do the work (pricing, listing, storing, and shipping your items) so you don't have to. ThredUP is the most convenient way to clean out your closet and find new homes for items you’re no longer loving. Also, we do provide our payout estimator (thredUP.com/payouts) along with other helpful info to manage seller expectations initially. We hope you might try us out again in the future, and if you need further assistance with your Clean Out Kit, please reach out to us at thredUP.com/contact.
This is the worst online reseller if you are the one with the goods being sold If you don't pay the $12 to have your things shipped back to you, they took the absolute best things out of my bags, and never posted them for sale then told me four weeks later it was because their processors "deemed them not good enough for sale quote it was a $400 Dooney and Bourke bag in excellent condition, Columbia sportswear brand new ski jackets with tags on them, coach sneakers that were leather in the box! Hi Jennifer, thank you for sharing your feedback with us here. We accept as many items as we possibly can from the Clean Out Kits we receive, however, we use a variety of tools and techniques when processing the items due to our strict quality standards and in an effort to keep our inventory balanced. We are unable to guarantee the acceptance of any item regardless of brand and condition, since many factors are considered while a bag is processed. We noticed that one of our agents has assisted you via email, and if further assistance is ever needed, please don't hesitate to reach back to us.
I purchased a Louis Vuitton purse for $1084, I returned the purse and never got my refund, I contacted ThredUp several times, then I contacted BBB, Federal Trades Commition, and filed a claim with PayPal against ThredUp. ThredUp emails me to drop the file/ dispute/chargeback, and they will release my money. I can't believe any of this. Now they email me and said the money was released on their end and for me to check with PayPal. I now have a lawyer because I don't know what to do. It started at the end of May and now it's the end of July 2020, I still haven't been refunded
Hi Kathy, thanks for reaching out to us. We have checked on the order you referred to, and the refund was issued on our end, however, because there was a chargeback request, PayPal did not allow the money to go through. Please, don't worry. We have reached out to you today with more information about the refund request that has already been issued, and we'll glad to assess any other inquiries you may have. Feel free to reply to our email sent recently and we'll keep assisting you from there.
I recently purchased a faux leather jacket from thred up and as I was searching the pockets I found a pair of unwashed women's panties! I'm totally disappointed and disgusted by this! How can they not have someone who checks the items before sending them out! They have just lost a customer!
Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention, Ronea. We are really sorry to hear that you received the jacket you purchased in this condition. Our team closely inspects every item that gets sent to customers, and we apologize for any oversights on our end. Please reach out to our Customer Support team via thredUP.com/contact with your order number, we'll be happy to provide you with a good resolution to this.
I am a regular customer of Thredup and normally value my customer experience. However, following the onset of COVID, I chose to convert a consignment bag to a donation to benefit Feeding America, assuming that the proceeds of the sale of my items would go to Feeding America. I just learned that, instead, Thredup donates just $5 to Feeding America and KEEPS the remaining profits. That is inexcusable. I attempted to convert my bag back to consignment and planned to donate the proceeds myself. I was told that was not possible. I am extremely upset with what, in my opinion, is duplicitous business.
Hi Stacey, We are transparent in our how our Donation program works and have pasted below what our FAQs read. Assigning a flat fee of $5 per Donation Kit keeps the process efficient and helps charities get their donations faster and on a more regular cadence (vs. Waiting months or weeks for all consignment items to sell and for buyers to keep them).
From our FAQs: “A Donation Bag offers the convenience of cleaning out with thredUP along with a charitable donation and a tax receipt. Instead of a payout, we’ll make a $5 donation (per bag) on your behalf to a charity of your choice.
While we aren’t as strict with the quality guidelines as we are with our standard Clean Out Bags, but the better the items are, the higher the chance of your items getting a second life in someone else’s closet.
I don't like how long it takes to get all my things. I don't like that it is shipped seperatly. The quality of the clothing seems very good.
Hi Rina, thank you for sharing your feedback with us. Please know that it's always our goal to fulfill orders as quickly as possible, it typically 1-2 business days for the orders to be prepared, and once shipped, they should arrive within 3-8 business days. We also have our Buy and Bundle feature, which is an easy way to combine items from multiple orders over a 7 days so they ship together. However, since we offer a wide inventory from multiple warehouses, we are only able to combine the items coming from the same warehouse inside of the same shipment, in case an order has items from different warehouses they are shipped in different packages.
The only time I ever returned something was a defective pair of sneakers. There was no purchase history on their website so I could not print a return label. There is no way to contact thredUP for help - no phone number, no chat so I had to do exhaustive searching to return the shoes within their 14-day policy. After i finally found an email address there was reluctance to refund my money. They said they would do it once "as a courtesy" even though it was their own fault for the confusion due to their website not working properly
Hi Elena. Our team strives to only accept items that meet our strict quality standards, and we apologize for any oversights on our end regarding the item you received, and the experience to initiate a return. We are glad to confirm that a resolution provided for your inquiry. For future reference, our current chat hours are Monday to Friday 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM PST. Also, more information about how our Returns work can be found on our FAQ here: https://help.thredup.com/en_us/categories/order-returns-SJDweIVaN.
I sold a kit of my clothes to ThredUP and when ordering it, selected the option to have the items they didn't accept sent back to me (for a small fee).
Well, they received my kit and never returned the unaccepted items. I reached out to customer service who claimed I did not select that option and that they had already "upcycled" the unaccepted items. When asked to provide proof that is the option I selected, they were unable to and fairly rude.
Among those items, were a NWT Patagonia fleece (may have been men's so probably why it wasn't accepted) and SEVERAL pairs of brand new Smartwool socks.
They literally gave over $100 worth of new items away and didn't return them to me, despite what I selected.
Any items they do accept and sell payout pennies on the dollar.
I very rarely write scathing reviews, but I will never do business with them again and would like to warn others who are considering it.
Hi Caroline, thank you for sharing your Clean Out experience. Please be assured that we have reached out to you directly for further explanation regarding how the Return Assurance service works and to assist you with a better resolution to your inquiry.
Don't waste your time selling anything on this website, they take your items takes over 3 months to process the only lists about 10 items and even though everything sent was is like new condition or new with tags. I am so upset how this was handled. Customer service is non existent. No phone number to call they ignore emails.
Hi Toby, We accept as many items as possible from Clean Out Kits, in fact, we wish we could accept more. Due to our strict quality standards and in an effort to keep our inventory balanced, we can only accept around 40% of the items that we receive. The rest are responsibly reused or recycled. For future reference, if you would like to take back your rejected items, you can opt into Return Assurance before you send your kit. For a $10.99 fee, we’ll ship all your unaccepted items back to you. Also, we have assisted you with your inquiries directly, and if you are still needing assistance, please reach out to us through live chat at thredUP.com/contact. We are available Monday to Friday from 6 AM to 5:30 PM PDT.
I have been a customer for several years. I have been disappointed quite a few times with clothes not being as advertised. I have complained, explaining that they have to be more careful as customers are depending on them to be accurate. This had always fallen on deaf ears but at least the customer service person acted sympathetic and my money has been returned. This time however when i wrote about missing buttons on my "you will think it's new" shirt, I was given 15% off the purchase so I could "fix it" myself. I wrote back and said fine if that was all they could offer I would take it. That should have been the end but the rep decided that I wasn't grateful enough and wrote me a lengthy email explaining that thredup is a thrift store indicating that just because something is advertised a new I shouldn't expect it to be because it's an online thrift store. Yes, this was emphasised- as if I was perhaps impaired in some way and did not realize this. I responded with a dose of sarcasm myself but also that I really felt like they needed to be more careful about this and that she was not doing her company any favors with her attitude. I told her that I believed our transaction was complete and to not contact me again. But she persisted, emailing me again to tell me to go elsewhere and with heart emojis. This is how their customer service treats people who expect to get what is advertised.
Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback with us, Cari. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment that has been caused in the past. We have reached out to you directly via email to see how we can best assist you.
ThredUP used to be a favorite site of mine for buying discounted used clothes. It's main virtue is wide selection. But as it's become more popular the hassles have grown, the prices risen, and the quality declined. The website has always been amateurish (you still can only proceed page by page, starting on page one). Customer service once sorted problems out by phone -- Now it's non-existent. Once there were shipping checklists of the items in your order (as provided by every other online retailed I've ever used) -- Now there are none, and you have no way of knowing what should be in the box, which can arrive torn with contents spilling out. Inevitably items don't arrive, or you get things you DIDN't order, and there's no way to sort mistakes out. Returns may or may not be accepted and you have no way to track them. "We don't believe in paper" is the excuse for all this, andt allows them to be unaccountable for anything they do.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us, Jawj. We are sorry for any disappointment that has been caused regarding navigating on our website. For the items you received, our team strives to list items as accurately as possible & our Polka Dot promise has you covered when things do not go as planned. While we do not have a call center, you can reach out to us via Chat or Email if you have any inquiries. We would be happy to also assist you by sharing more information on how to track your orders and returns. Our current chat hours are Monday to Friday from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM PST.
Here is the Up Date to my experience with Thred Up. After my June 12th Site Jabber Review my clothes suddenly appeared at my front door on June 16th 2020 around 6 p.m. delivered by a DHL truck. I am starting to doubt that they even left the state of Washington. The clothes are undamaged and all accounted for. But it was a terrible experience for both myself and my wallet. I also believe that I was discriminated against due to my age--62. Thred Up has "questionnaire" asking your age hidden in it. I think that too many of these consignment shops over all judge the customer by age. Another one did this to me way back in 2006--Plato's Closet. I submitted hipster new garments only to have them rejected. Then my teenage daughter went in with the SAME garments a week later... and... yep they took them.
Hi Cat, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're truly sorry that your Clean Out experience didn't turn out as planned and for any disappointment that was caused.
When looking at your account we can see that your Clean Out Kit was received at our facility & was then returned back to you per your request. At this time, we are experiencing Clean Out Kit processing delays due to precautions we are taking for COVID-19 to keep our teams safe. In regards to the questionnaire that was completed - this is standard for our Goody Box service so that our stylists can get to know our customer's style a bit better. Goody Boxes are handpicked to fit your size, style, and budget.
We hope you might give our Clean Out service another try somewhere down the line! If there is anything else we can help you with at this time please feel free to chat us over at thredUP.com/contact.
Sent my Kit Bag on March 21st, 2020 and they still haven't processed it. What makes it worst is that I signed up for Return Assurance--and they "claimed" that I didn't have it on my account when I ordered my kit--they "reverse this" after I told them that I have photographs (which I will send to the Attorney's Generals Office Office of Consumer Affairs). I think that they used the corona virus ordeal to simply "take" my garments--and then sent me repeated emails trying to get me to "donate" my clothing. They keep using my process date back and have not returned my garments to me. These were expensive items new never worn, less than three years old, in season Spring and Summer. Clothes bought at Macy's. They were in immaculate condition.
Their website is difficult and I sent high quality items- in their defense it was right before the pandemic but it is almost impossible to navigate their website I haven't a clue as o what was going on- it said I had a very high percentage of acceptance 83but. I got 4.00 for about 10 items including an unworn printed velvet anthropologie skirt. Definitely do not use
We appreciate you sharing your experience with our Clean Out program, Linda. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience while navigating on our website and our payout amounts. For the most up to date info on how we payout, please visit thredUP.com/payouts. If you need further assistance to understand your earnings or navigate on our website, please feel free to reach out to us on thredUP.com/contact, our team will be happy to guide you through all the steps to ensure you will have a better experience.
I bought a pair of shoes and had to return them because they where too small. I did that in MARCH, it is now JUNE and I still haven't gotten my money back.
They don't have a customer service phone number so all you can do it email... MY $127.26 has been STOLLEN from ThredUP DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!
To buy isn't bad but to sell! I sent in brand name shoes, dresses and jackets. Whoopee I purchased these items for over $100.00 they were never worn because I went from a small to med I sent a leather jacket, the tag, still on it was $129.00 I got a dollar and a few cents. One unworn dress, still tagged. 1.00, one that sold yester,. 27, yes,. Twenty seven cents. From now on, I will donate my clothes. A Calvin Klein dress should have sold for more than to give me a dollar and change, especially considering none of these clothes were ever worn and to pay $10.99 to get my own clothes Bach is ridiculous!
I can't wait to see if my review is posted considering it's negative, it would be less than one star if possible. The only positive thing is some women got some beautiful never worn dresses at what I hope is an extremely good price.
We apologize if our payout amounts have been lower than expected for the items you sent, Jeanette. We recommend thredUP to sellers who are looking for convenience and want to easily resell items they no longer wish to keep. We authenticate, list, photograph, house, and ship your items for you - all of that generates considerable costs on our end, resulting in payouts that reflect that.
It's always our hope to be as transparent as possible surrounding how much sellers can make with thredUP when they explore the possibility of cleaning out with us. For the most up to date info on how we payout please visit thredUP.com/payouts.
If you have any questions or would like to chat further please reach out via thredUP.com/contact.
I ordered three items on May 26. The website said I would receive items by June 5. I received one of the three items. On June 8 I checked the website to see why I had not received the other two items and it said they were delivered. There is no phone number to contact customer service. The site says to chat with customer service then it says chat is unavailable. I sent them an email but as of yet I have not received a reply. Never again!
They won't respond to an inquiry about an item I was interested in. They won't respond to an item I was interested in.
Hi Jeff, thank you for getting in touch. We apologize for any delays in communication with our Customer Support team. Due to a recent influx of inquiries, response times are a bit longer than usual and we appreciate your patience while we get back up to speed. If you are still needing assistance regarding an item you were interested in, please reach out to us through live chat at thredUP.com/contact. We are available from Monday to Friday from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM PST.
VERY DISAPPOINTED! NO MENS CLOTHING! NOT FAIR! I'VE NEVER BEEN SO DISAPPOINTED! GIVE ME A GOOD REASON TO CHANGE MY OPINION!
Hi Richard, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us regarding men's clothing. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment that has been caused since we currently don't have those available on our website. At this moment, we accept women's and children's sizes and brands, and our boy's section currently goes up to size 20. We truly hope to add men's clothes to our service in the future.
Super slow service (takes forever to ship, regardless of the shipping method you choose), if it even ships at all! They cancelled numerous of my orders for no reason and no explanation at all (customer service offered no help at all)! I had 3 "bundles" and my 4th order was separate, where I paid the premium shipping price to have the items delivered in a timely manner. They decided to combine my bundles and the separate order and it took over 2 week for the orders to ship and another week to deliver. I needed those items for my vacation but despite the fact that I paid for separate shipping, I found it after I returned from my vacation. One of my orders was delivered to my neighbors house and they did nothing about it! I contacted customer support and even FedEX, but neither of them did anything about it! I had to walk up to all of my immediate neighbors house and start asking if they received my order because after A MONTH I still haven't received it! Than, when I had a return, they took 20 days after receiving it to process the return! The items description is inaccurate! "New with tags" means it has the plastic string on, the one that used to hold the tag, but no tag, therefore, no guarantee that it's new! Their customer service is useless! When you contact them, they will reply with a generic and non relevant answer and no communication after that! I sent them pictures of the item that didn't match the description (I ordered a size small blouse and received a large sweater), but received no reply after that (it was a "non returnable" item). It's ridiculous what they can get away with! It honestly doesn't worth the trouble!
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
Your feedback is indeed appreciated, Michele. We are happy to hear that you had a good experience shopping with us and that you were able to find nice products for good prices. We hope to have you back soon!
