ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

What a waste of resources putting this thing together. I don't think the "stylist" looked at my preferences at all. The shirts were atrocious. One patterned shirt looks like something a old women wore. One pair of pants they had as a "one size" was a Size 0. A sweater they had packed in the box had pills all over the front and looked like it had been shrunk. The goody box is apparently their way to dump the crummy stuff no one wants.
I sent a cleanout bag with a lot of good items, some with tags, brand new. I didn't get much for them, expect that you don't get much for resale items even if they are new. I used my store credit to buy a bag that was advertised as like new but it had obviously had wear and was used. I paid quite a lot for this designer item that was advertised as unused. I hate it I was clearly cheated. I think I will donate it to charity. Lesson learned do not deal with these ripoff artists.
Thank you for your feedback Betsy. We are sorry to hear you were not satisfied with your clean out experience. We provide our customers with all the payout percentages and estimation tools to ensure they are well informed before sending items. Our Clean Out program is focused on convenience and the ease we offer when getting rid of unwanted items. We also offer a donation program, if that is something you are interested in. Thank you.
I haven't made the mistake of sending clothes to be sold through this company, based on all of the terrible reviews, but the buying process is just as bad. They used to have great prices and accurately described the fit, color, and condition of the items they sold, but that has completely changed. Defective, obviously worn (sometimes even smelly) items are listed as being in new condition. Returns are not credited back consistently. They will lie and say they didn't receive shipments and refuse to give you credit. I stopped using them after they sent me an obviously defective jacket that was listed as new, and then told me they never received my return. Good riddance, I wouldn't want anything from your company again anyway.
Hi Michelle,
Thanks for leaving us feedback. We are sorry to hear you are unsatisfied with your experience. If you ever receive an item that does not arrive as described on our site, you are able to return it with exemption from the restocking fee. Refunds are issued as long as we receive the items being returned. Fedex tracking is provide and we partner with Fedex to confirm all delivery information. If you need any assistance with order or return issues, we ask that you reach out to Customer Service via support@thredup.com. Thank you.
I started using ThredUp in 2015. It used to be a great site to get used clothes from. Now, not so much. They need to put measurements on everything and they need to be correct. But, more importantly their prices have gone up so much it's almost cheaper to buy from the store when things are on sale. Their prices for Old Navy, Gap, Ann Taylor, have gone up the most which is what I buy. They also have many "unbranded" items. How can you justify charging 40 bucks for a shirt when you don't even know the brand? I won't be ordering from them much longer if their prices keep going up.
Thanks for your feedback Sarah. Items are priced according to their brand and style MSRP. If an item is unbranded and priced at that amount, it is because the seller has chosen to price their item at said price. This is not to be confused with ThredUP pricing the item. All items include standard measurements taken during processing. We encourage customers to check their brand and style measurements on the brand specific websites and charts, for the most accurate listing.
The ThredUp "Goody Box" is a total scam. They pack it with unwanted, stretched out clothing that all smells like it came from someone's basement. They don't listen to your suggestions of what you want and just seem to pack it with clothing they couldn't otherwise sell. I asked for colder weather clothing and they packed my box with 5 summer dresses, a huge stretched out sweater, a sweater with picks all over it and a few items that I might have kept if they didn't smell horrible and seem to be very low quality for the price they asked. I literally sent everything back. If you shop on the site at least you can decide if the price is worth it. The Goody Box give you no such choice.
The worst part is the deposit is NON REFUNDABLE and does not apply toward your next box or credit on the site. I thought the $10 might carry over to the next box which is why I gave the service a chance. This is just a way for them to rip you off and possibly make money off of you forgetting to return the items (which you will most certainly want to do) within 7 days.
Hi Kelsey, we are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with our Goodybox program. The Goodyboxes are a way for customers, who do not wish to browse, to have a custom shopping experience according to their style preferences and interests. We kindly ask our customers for feedback when a Goodybox order has been completed so that we may improve this feature, and offer the best customer experience.
UPDATE 10/30
I sent an email to the thread up costumer care and they offered a full refund without having to ship the item back. I'm satisfied with the service, and will watch my account to see if/when the refund is issued.
ORIGINAL POST BELOW
I ordered a holiday dress for my daughter. The item description said 100% cotton, and when I received the item it is definitely NOT ANY COTTON AT ALL. It's 99% polyester! Plus it has two holes in the front and was advertised as "like new." I do NOT want "store credit" just to go through another bad experience like this, and I shouldn't have to pay a re-stocking fee. I paid $15 for this and am only being offered a 7.99 return. And there is no way on the website to reach someone or review the sale! Awful and archaic customer service!
Designer jeans will get you $2 if you want to sell to TU. I received only 35 to 60 cents for items they sold for over $10. Nearly all my items sold within a week, and they made several hundred dollars from them. I got a $15 store credit. (It's possible they get a tax credit for "donating" all items they don't accept also.)
TU rips off sellers, yet their prices keep going up on items for sale. For example: right now, TU has Clark's flip flops selling for $28 you can get them brand new (on sale) for $29.99, and in a size/color you prefer! Add in the $6 shipping cost for orders under $72 and there's no point in buying from the site.
Hi Joan. Thank you for your review. We have sent you a private message to discuss your concerns further.
I was really impressed with the selection of shoes. However, when the shoes did not fit right and I returned them, I found the process cumbersome and expensive. They charge a $2 restocking fee for each item and only provide store credit. If you want the amount returned to your credit card, it costs an additional $8.99 for shipping label. All in all, I won't use this service again. The local consignment stores offer enough selection without the hassle of returns that don't fit.
Thanks for your feedback Christina. We are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with our platform. The restocking fee is based on the cost required to accept returned items into our inventory. We strive to offer a great selection of new or gently used items at discounted prices, however we do incur some production costs. We hope you continue to explore sustainable fashion practices and we thank you for your trying ThredUP.
I sent a bag of new items with tags; designer jeans, never worn shoes, bags etc. After 10 months I contacted them. Was told there was correspondence via email ( not true)
Told $8.72. I will go local and donate to shelter. Tax credit is worth more.!
Hi Cheryl,
We see that you contacted us earlier this year and heard back from our team within 1-2 business days. We offer our customers a variety of information and tools to make the most of our Clean Out program. It’s important to remember that using thredUP means that you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer. But what you may miss in earnings, you earn back in overall convenience. We also offer the option to donate your items for a tax receipt, on our Clean Out kit order page. Check it out here: https://www.thredup.com/order-kit
Fist of all they pay very little for great items sometimes they were new. The process takes forever. So I finally made a little money and was ready to cash out I got confused with this new reformation credit when I really wanted a prepaid Visa card. I contacted them within an hour by mail and they weren't helpful at all he said the transacción can't be canceled.
Hi Gloria,
We are sorry to hear about this. Unfortunately, once a payout method is selected it can not be reversed. Upon cashing out, you do have the option to do Reformation credit (while we partner with them), Paypal transfer, or a Visa card. You must make sure you select the correct option on your cash out screen which can be seen at the top of your request box in the form of a labeled tab.
My first clean out bag was actually a pretty good payout (even though I only got $4 for a pair of Micheal Kors heels) They took all but 2 items, and the majority were paid out right away (so it added up)- I paid for the return assurance, so my items were returned. One of my items on consignment even sold, and that was great. I had 2 items on consignment that didn't sell. Now keep in mind, these items were consignment die to the high value- and had they sold, I would have gotten a pretty penny. But, they didn't. Oh well, right? I can choose to reclaim them, which of course, I did (it was 2 items worth close to $400, of course I want them back)- then I find out I have to Pay to have my Own items returned to me!?! Wth? This is after I already paid $11.99 for them to send me back a pair of slacks and a cami. If you don't pay the s&h fee, then your clothes become property of ThredUp. Do you really think they're gonna donate those? No. So, I paid. For the return of My own items. I sent in another clean out bag and they accepted All of my items, but still charged me the return assurance fee. And- the upfront payout this time was a whopping $4.30. For a Micheal Kors dress and shirt- both with tags still on and 2 more designer items. $4.30. The rest was put on consignment. I went back and forth with the people from thredup regarding refunding my return assurance fee as I didn't use it. They kept insisting they didn't charge me even after I sent multiple screenshots of my account clearly showing the charge. Then they finally credited my account And Then took the refund Back when my consignment items sold, meaning I actually didn't get paid for those items. That's why I say they are basically thieves. After numerous emails, I finally said, you know what- just refund the $5.99 I would need to get my items back so I can be done with you guys. They had no problem doing that. I reclaimed my items and will never give them a chance to make money at my expense again. I'd also like to point out that although they claim the items they don't accept get donated to charity, that they have what are called Goody bags and also sell different 'grab bags' of those items. So they aren't donating your items that they didn't pay you for. They're still making money just now they got around having to pay you. It's a brilliant scam.
Thanks for your feedback Kristi. We offer a variety of tools and information for our customers to be well informed when participating in our Clean Out program. It’s important to remember that using thredUP means that you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer. But what you may miss in earnings, you earn back in overall convenience. Our Rescue program, serves a couple of purposes we believe strongly in: they give us another way to extend the life of garments--even the imperfect ones--and keeps them out of landfill. We also donate a portion of proceeds from every box sold to one of our charitable partners. Thank you.
I sent a large bag of new, lightly used items from good brands (Dillard's, free people, Calvin Klein, etc), everything was under 3 years old. They gave me $1 or less per item! They kept about 10 times, plus the charged me to ship back the items they didn't keep, so the total profit is about $. 50. I regularly sell items to Buffalo Exchange where they pay well, but I figured I'd try ThredUp to save time. What a WASTE. It's been over a week since they processed by bag, and I still haven't received my other items back. I won't ever use ThredUp again!
Thanks for your feedback Olivia. Items from bag #B2MB5-AMCCD were rejected due to: pilling/stains/ & overstock. The bag has been returned and delivered to you as of 10/24.

We are sorry to hear that our Clean Out program was not for you.
I was not happy with my first order, but after a time, tried again. And was pleased. I've ordered a few times since. (I had to replace my clothes due to weight gain from a medical issue, which was nearly unmanagable.) I got some really nice staples and a few 'extras'. And I was able to buy high quality in brands I like. Like some of the peices and love some of the others! I also like that I can bundle and save on shipping.
Sometimes it is hard to see materials and/or pattern in the photos if the item is dark. I have one top that came w squares, black on black-suprise! But it's really nice and my style so I'm keeping it.
PS feel like my pics don't do much justice. Sorry.
Thanks for your feedback Stacy. If you ever experience issues with an order, please reach out to our Customer Service team via support@thredup.com as well as our chat service (available via our website) M-F 7am - 4pm. Thank you.
I sent my bag in 7 months ago and it hasn't been processed. I had to go through a lot to convince them to return it, and they agreed, but I never even got it back that was a month ago. They stole all my clothes it's a scam.
Hi Stephanie,
We are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with our Clean Out Program. If you would like us to review your bag, please reach out to our Customer Service team via support@thredup.com.
Thank you.
Recently mailed over $3,000 worth of high end boutique clothing barely worn or NWT. They listed half of my bag from anywhere of $1 to the highest item being $30. My payout to me ranged from. 35 cents to the highest of $6. Over 21 items they choose not to list and mail back this was over a month 1/2 ago still have yet to receive these items? When I quickly realized that this company was taking full advantage of the customer by making a huge profit on their stuff and reserving it in their cart to keep and sell at a later date. I looked further into other complaints. Unbeknownst to everyone there is no customer service phone number. Huge red flag. After 15 emails back and forth asking to speak to a manager they supposedly sold half my items and were sending back the others. I was asked to pay an additional $6 to the $10 I had already paid to have these unwanted/unsold items sent back. The Fed Ex tracking number they sent me is non-existent according to Fed Ex and my account all the suddden shows 0.0 balance. They sold half my items they kept and have not paid me? I have reached out more then enough times for no clear factual answers going to now reach out to the Attorneys Generals office for help. Bottom line I sent in $3,000 of boutique clothing paid a additional $16 to have unwanted/unsold items mailed back to me and have not received a payout for clothing they sold nor any of my clothes have been mailed back. Very suspicious!
Hi Denise,
After reviewing your bag #B27WJ-VK2YK it is clear that you requested Return Assurance which is why your rejected items were returned. We make our payout percentages very clear with information available to our sellers, prior to sending us their items, to ensure a well informed experience. We are sorry to hear the Clean Out program is not for you.
I have used thredUP both as a buyer and a seller on and off since 2014.
SELLING
The process is easy enough. Order a shipping bag, fill it up with "within the guidelines" clothing and shoes, decide if you would like to have unaccepted items returned (fee) or donated. Payouts are very low. We're talking cents for t-shirts, pants, jeans. Designer items, as expected, have higher payouts. Items not accepted immediately but are deemed saleable are placed in a consignment status where the item is listed for a period. If the item does not sell within the time-frame, you have an option to "claim it" which means it is placed in your cart and sent back to you.
- Low payouts. If you're looking to earn max $ for a designer item this is not the place
- Processing time lengthy (I've had bags sit for as long as 3 months)
- You are at their mercy when it comes to Consignment items - I've had items with incorrect descriptions (e.g. Not stated as new with tags, grey instead of purple, etc.)
- You pay for shipping for reclaimed consigned items not sold
Also, I noticed they are currently not taking any selling bags at the moment (October 2018)
BUYING
Descriptions are often sparse and incorrect. I purchased a dress only to find out it was actually a jumper (pants), bottoms that have the incorrect size (described as 4 but was actually a 4Short), items described as "excellent condition" but arrive stained, stretched, loose, missing buttons, etc.
The free shipping threshold is $79 which is high compared to other sites and given this is a used clothing site
There is now a "surcharge" for items that do not ship out of your home warehouse. The surcharge is not transparent (e.g. $2.99) and is described only as being added to the price of the item
We have too much throwaway fashion and only 1 Earth. I appreciate the "recycle, re-purpose and reuse" model that thredUP encourages, however, given my most recent experiences with both selling and buying, I will no longer recommend thredUP.
Thank you for your feedback Rachel. We are sorry to hear that this is your experience with our platform. We hope you continue to forward the mission of a sustainable fashion and that you reconsider shopping with us in the future. Thank you.
I don't buy cheap crap (sensored), I sent 4 bags filled with designer clothing. The first bag I was lucky enough to make $15.01... thanks The three bags to follow were filled with far more expensive items. I got one bag back half full. So hey ThreadUp, why can I not track the bags I paid to track? Oh and I duct taped my bags... the one I got back didn't have any tape? Weird right?!
Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback Katie. We kindly ask that you direct Clean Out Kit questions to Customer Service at support@thredup.com. Thank you!
The site has been okay for buying, but BEWARE of selling. I have sold to them twice and am fairly certain they have stolen from me. The first time I sold to them I recalled being perplexed that a DVF wrap top in great condition didn't get listed. I thought it was a fluke. Flash forward to my second time selling to them, and I guess I'm the fool this time! Items that didn't get listed or were "lost" included a BCBG ball gown with the tag still on it (retailing at almost $400), Paige ankle cropped denim in great condition, another BCBG red turtleneck dress that I never wore, and who knows what else. DO NOT sell to them unless you want to throw your clothes and $$ in the trash.
Hi Lisa - we'd like to assure you all items sent in by customers are processed with the utmost integrity. Trust is an integral part of our business and is something we wouldn't compromise. We have sent you a private message to address your concerns further.
The sizes and measurements are way off. 14 day return policy so you are stuck if you are ever out of town or don't jump on it quick.
Hi Molly,
If you ever need assistance with an order return or item not as described, please reach out to Customer Service at support@thredup.com.
Customers are not charged for the restocking fee on items that are received not as described. Simply select this option when generating an order return and leave a note indicating what the item discrepancy is. Thank you.
I received the pair of Levi's I ordered and it was obvious to me straight out of the package that they were a short or petite size. The listing just said 16. I don't like having to pay a restocking fee for something that is mislabeled.
Hi Paula,
Thanks for your feedback. Customers are not charged restocking fees on "item(s) not as described". Simply select this option when generating an order return and leave a note indicating what the item discrepancy is. Thank you.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
