ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I used to LOVE this site. I could have been an ambassador for how much I've recommended it over the past 4 years. But these past few months things have taken a STEEP decline and I believe I've placed my last order with them.
I only order 'like new' clothes because over the years I've noticed 'gently used' ones don't last as long. But with my last few boxes 'like new' is a completely bogus term. I got sweaters with pilling, rips, stains and tears as well as pants and shirts with comparable damage in addition to missing buttons or swatches of fabric.
Even though these items are intentionally misleading, with the new 'restocking fees' I'm still paying for it. One of my favorite aspects of this site was the ability to try on items and then send them back with a flat fee considering that occasionally the clothes aren't sized correctly across brands or countries (jean numbers, UK sizes to US, etc.) and/or aren't anything like you expected (color, material discrepancies, damage, etc.). But with the abolition of this feature, I'm spending so much in return fees I might as well buy something new on sale and know what I'm getting. I was charged $130 in restocking fees after my last few orders even though a majority of the returns were comically dissimilar to how they were represented on the site. I used to think the prices were so reasonable and felt so savvy after I placed an order but recently I've felt insulted with the quality that I get for what I'm paying.
Another thing to consider - sometimes it takes up to two weeks to get your order (even if you pay for expedited shipping) and by that point you only have a few days to return it or you're stuck with it. Why don't they count the return period from the day it's delivered?
The combination of all these unacceptable things have led to me writing the company off completely. Look up my order history - you've probably lost one of your best customers.
I have ordered a couple of bags before and received very small amount of money for what was donated. They mark up the price immensely and sell things for much more than what they buy. We're talking pennies, not dollars (when they buy). When I ordered my last bag, I donated the most pieces of clothing (and valuable) that I have ever donated. Two months pass and I check in with customer service because I hadn't heard anything yet. They told me that my entire bag was donated to charity. I asked them why given what was inside, and they told me I hadn't order a standard bag. This was very unclear to me, and I had never received a communication or donation receipt after they received my bag. The customer service is terrible, and they didn't even offer me a small account credit, which I think would be the right thing given the misunderstanding. I am done using Thredup. WE are better off selling our clothing at Poshmark!
Thanks for your feedback Annie. We see that you did in fact order a donation kit, which means you will receive a tax receipt via the email on your account. If you still have not received this receipt, please follow up with CS via support@thredup.com. Thank you.
I had a good experience with ThredUP last year, so I decided to use them again. I sent in all my good stuff, including 5 perfect Lilly dresses (no sign of wear). I couldn't wait to get my payout. However, when I opened the email, they didn't even have them listed! I couldn't believe it. I could have made a lot of money using Poshmark or some other consignment store. Some thief is banking off my clothes. So disappointing and infuriating. Will NOT be using them again.
Hi Allison, thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. Some of your items, including those dresses, were marked as "overstock" and therefore could not be accepted. We accept items in correlation with our current stock and inventory needs. This is listed in the quality and acceptance standards on our website: https://thredup.helpshift.com/a/thredup/?s=selling&f=acceptance-and-quality-standards&l=en
Thank you.
I ordered two dresses for a higher than usual price for consignment clothes but one I was willing to pay. I had to send one back because their chest measurements were off. I had to pay almost as much for return shipping as I did the dress. I added 12 dollars more to my "credit" and ordered another. I had ordered a clean out pack and sent 3 shirts- all new, 2 pair of Talbots slacks, new, a brand new Talbot blazer and a Talbots skirt. All of which Were too big for me from a recent weight loss. I expected $10-40 for each of these items. They accepted the blazer and the slacks and offered me 2.47 cash or $4 and some change for consignmnet. They tossed my other items. Really. Not each- for the combined items. NEVER AGAIN will I consign with them OR buy from them. If I am giving my stuff away I will donate it to our agency for homeless women.
Hi Debra,
We are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with our Clean Out program. It’s important to remember that using thredUP means that you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer. But what you may miss in earnings, you earn back in overall convenience. Our goal is to help make our customers’ lives easier by helping them get rid of unwanted items from their closets from the convenience of their own home. While you might be able to earn slightly more by selling elsewhere, thredUP does all of the hard work for you: no driving, no negotiating with buyers, no dealing with rejected items. Thank you.
I recently purchased multiple items from Thredup. Two of the tops were not my style and different than I expected from the pictures. I immediately packaged them up to return them ( I never even tried the on). A week or so later I received a credit for one item but am being told the other item was stained and had the tags removed. This is flat out wrong! Going back and forth with customer service has gotten me no where. The "return team" insists the item, that I barely touched, is unable to be resold. Seems to me they will pocket my money and sell it back to someone else.
I will be sure to tell the friends I have referred to Threadup about their questionable business practices.
Hi Amanda,
Thanks for this information. After reviewing your inquiry, we were unable to find any conversation logs of your interaction with CS. If you would like to send us a message with the email you used to contact us, we are more than willing to look into this for you. Thank you.
I found Thredup a couple months ago and was stoked about the whole idea, available items and the clean out/buy options. I ordered and was able to return easily. As for the clean out bag, absolutely ridiculous. I sent a bag full of clothes, easily 30 pieces. Now i was not expecting to make 100.00 at all but you know what they offered me...$2.48... not even kidding for 3 pieces out of the thirty or so.So your telling me the bright pink Nine West lace dress or the free people courdory jacket in great condition won't sell but the winnie the pooh shirt will? Never ever again. Deleting the app and forgetting about this company. Keep the $2.48, better yet, donate that too.
Hi Trish,
We are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with our Clean Out Program. We understand if your goal is to earn more money that you may seek out other consignment options, and we certainly respect that. We are always here to help sell your items and clear your closet in the most convenient way possible!
While our clean out process may not offer the highest payouts, we try our best to provide more convenience (no driving, negotiating with buyers, or dealing with rejected items). For this reason, we are not able to provide the greatest payouts for items that are already highly discounted.
To learn more about our payout breakdown, check out our payout percentage chart, here: http://splr.io/6181r28gB
Thank you.
I am very upset with this company first, they don't have a phone # to be reach. I like a handbag but according to them was in somebody's cart for 16 hours well I place a autobuy but after 10 minutes I found another one which in the descriptions said animal print but the one I place the auto buy does not said that and I don't like animal print well I canceled after 10 minutes I did the auto buy, that was Sunday morning they don't have nobody to answer your email but I was thinking it was 16 hours left in somebody's cart to became available my surprise and this a scam company after 30 minutes became available they are lying with the expensive handbags is not such a thing somebody's cart they don't want to give a discount code in those merchandise I am mad because after 10 minutes I wasn't able to cancel something it was not available they replied was if you click auto buy they can not canceled even is not yours yet!
Hi Maria,
Thanks for your feedback. All information regarding Auto Buy is made available via our website. Read more about it here:

If you are looking to buy items, I do recommend Thred Up. There is a lot of junk to sort through, but you can definitely find high end great quality items for low prices. If you are looking to make a few bucks by cleaning out your closet? Steer clear and try Poshmark instead. I sent 2 bags filled to the brim of designer name brand clothing, some worn but in good shape, some with tags still on. For nearly 30+ items I only got about $25 they even threw away (they claim it gets recycled) items that had TAGS on them brand new because they claimed it was "damaged". In order to get items back that I no longer want to sell, I have to pay sales tax and shipping. Sales tax on items that I already own? Selling on Thred Up is a scam. Buying on Thred Up is risky, but can definitely pay off.
Thanks for your feedback Nellie. We do not discard of items that are rejected. If Return Assurance is requested, we will send them back to you. Otherwise, they are circulated into our Rescue program and donation cycle. We do not guarantee the acceptance of all items that are sent to our facility for processing, either gently used or new with tags. Acceptance is based on quality standards and supply/demand of our current inventory. For more information regarding your bag(s) we recommend reaching out to our CS team for further information. Thank you!
I have found some good buys in this site. If you have a lot of time to sit waiting for the website to respond, you may save some money. However, their web site has major issues. Sometimes it works fine, but most of the time it is either slow to respond, or just does not work well. Often get freeze screens, or the items are not in the cart when you try to check out.
Thanks for expressing your ideas and concern. We recommend utilizing Google chrome when browsing our website, since it most compatible.
I had purchased an order equiveling to $94 and I'm able to wear 3 of the 9 items purchased. When ordering, i made sure to have had the right sizes in which i did. Every sweater appeared on the manequin to have been long on the torso and have long sleeves. However when i received my order, the sweaters were the complete opposite. Every sweater had elbow length sleeves and was not loose fitting as they appeared online. I prepared a return slip however upon reading the policy, i noticed there is a $2 restock fee per item plus you need to have the original "thredup tags". If you choose to have a free label you only receive store credit but if you choose to pay for shipping yourself, than the return goes back on your CC. But by end of it all, what are you truly getting back? Probably next to nothing. Sad that i wasted so much money but happy i learned a valuable lesson. I do not recommend this site. You are not getting what you truly see on the site, i think they're over priced for a lot of things and the return policy is absurd. *i tried uploading photos but it would not allow me*
Thank you for your review Jessica and we're sorry your experience did not meet expectations. We have sent you a private message to discuss your concerns further.
I've been shopping with them for a while and now you can't click on an item to get the measurements. Lots of items say large, but most have been put through a washer and dryer many times. The measurements are very helpful because it gives me an immediate answer if something will fit me or not. Bring that feature back. Also the restocking fee is lame. I'm sure the task of returning an item is already calculated into the price. A restocking fee is simply another way of getting more money from the consumer.
Thank you for the feedback in regards to our Restocking Fee Nancy. As we apply certain fees to our services, we do have our customers in mind every step of the way. We are committed to providing the widest variety of secondhand pieces at affordable prices, and while these fees may change over time, we're actively collecting customer feedback.
I sent over 20 items to them for resale some were never worn... some how they only listed less than 10 and I received $11.62. It would have been more financially helpful to donate the items and take the tax write off!
Hi Patricia. Thank you for your review. We have sent you a private message to discuss your concerns further.
Wow. I created this account solely to post a warning about thredUP. I had heard great things, but apparently the company has changed its policies and boy is it a mess. I sent several brand name, brand new items that met all of the requirements listed on the site, after several weeks, I received an email with a notice that I had received a payout of $0. No explanation, no list of items accepted, nothing. I have no idea if the email means they just trashed everything I sent or if it's waiting to be sold. The links in the email did not work, and the promised live chat function does not exist either on the website or in the app. There is no phone number to call, and emails go into a black hole, I will be shouting from the rooftops that this company is unaccountable and unreachable. They fooled me once, but that won't happen again. Stay away, and donate or sell your items locally. At least with a local consignment shop you'll be able to get some information and be able to talk to a human being,
Hi Dana. Thank you for your review and we're sorry your recent experience did not meet expectations. Our agents are available to provide instant assistance via chat Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM PST. Our support team is also available via the app or email at support@thredup.com. We have sent you a private message to discuss this further.
The piece of junk I received was filthy, stained and old, not "slightly used." It stank. When I went to return it I quickly realized their scam. They charge to send it back, then there's the restocking. For the filthy item I paid over $25.00 for, I would have ended up getting less than $6.00 back for. PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
Hi Joey,
We are sorry to hear about this. To clarify, the restocking fee does not apply to items that arrive not as described. This includes unlisted stains, flaws, etc. Even if you chose to pay for shipping ($8.99) you would receive more than $6.00 to your original method of refund. We do offer free return labels with store credit. For further assistance, please reach out to our Customer Service at support@thredup.com. Thank you.
I write this review with sadness in my heart. I feel greed got the best of this company. First, the payout decreased. Then they added a restocking fee if you want to return something that did not work. The final straw is that they advertised an item as large, it came extra large. It was an Athleta dress. I usually wear a medium, but I know this dress. I have tried my friends. I knew this would be great winter wear with under layering. I was so excited. So when it was an extra large, I asked to return it. I had to send pictures to prove it... ok?... I did that. So they approved my return, but would not reimburse my shipping because I kept one of the items. "I would have kept both?"... I kept saying to no avail. Also no real apology. I have spent a lot of money there because I have to dress in business clothes. Does loyalty not mean anything?
Hi Allison,
Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback. To clarify, we offer free return shipping with refund to store credit. The restocking fee is not applied to any items that arrive not as described, this includes your Athleta dress in the wrong size. On your Order Returns page there is a drop down menu with the option "item not as described". Once you select this, you can leave a note describing the details of the item you received. For further assistance, we encourage you to reach out to Customer Service. Thank you.
Updaring my review to include this: "THE COUPONS ARE APPLIED FIRST, THEN THEY CALCULATE YOUR PAYOUT! So if you list an item at $51.99 and someone uses a 20% coupon, Thredup calculates your payout over $41, bringing your payout percentage down from 40% to 25%! SUPER SHADY PRACTICE: BEWARE! IN ORDER TO AVOID THIS, YOU NEED TO PRICE YOUR ITEMS AT AT LEAST $62.99 (they claim the max coupon is 20%, so $12.60 discount would keep you over $50 and at a 40% payout). DO THEY COMMUNICATE THIS?! OF COURSE NOT! They make it seem as though the 20% will be deducted off your payout amount, but nothing is less true! Be VERY careful in your pricing and listing! Sorry to say I had to hank up prices on items I would have listed much cheaper.
Thredup recently made several changes, the most significant of which is that all items are now placed on consignment (if accepted). If you want an upfront payment, they make one on each item but BEWARE, it is much lower than any price you would have gotten in the past (their website says 'slightly lower' - what a hoot!). Whatever payout they offer is between 50 and 95% lower than their previous payout (as listed as the payout if sold on consignment). ALSO added is that now any discounts they give the customer are given are also deducted from your payment (they claim it's up to 20% of their already extremely lowered payouts). This used to go in after 45 days, but is now immediate! No communication was sent on this (believe me, I checked)! They now also discount your items prices when it has been listed for 45 days, without permission or consult, to 'help you sell faster' (because that's the type of 'help' you want, someone slashing your asking price without permission...).
The one change you could call a benefit is that you can adjust your asking price for any item now. But as said, after 45 days of listing your prices will be randomly adjusted, so you basically got autonomy for 45 days against severely reduced payouts.
ANOTHER notable change, this one on the purchasing side, is that they now charge a $1.99 per item restocking fee for returns (briefly is was for items listed under $50, but it's now for ANY item). So huge reduction in service there as well.
Thanks for your feedback Laura. All consignment information is made available on our clean out website as well as under the FAQs.

We do not hide any updates from our customers and always encourage you reach out to Customer Service with any inquiries. You can reach us at one of our many channels which includes support@thredup.com, chat via the website (M-F, 7am-4pm) or any of our social media channels. Thank you.
As an update to my review below I would like to include a list of brands I would recommend avoiding when you send in as The pricing is either suppressed (I literally sent in items with the tag price on it and they list LOWER retail prices than it says on the tag. They then go ahead and give a payout over that lower price! (Unfortunately for them I keep records of everything and photos of the tags. But THAT is reaching SCAM territory right there.
Okay, so brands to avoid sending: Tori Richard, Nic + Zoe, Dana Buchman, Rebecca Taylor, Factory by Eric Hart, Express, BCBGeneration, Poetic License, Whiting & Davis, Nine West, Ella Moss, Banana Republic, GAP, New York & Company, Worthington, Cynthia Steffe, Axcess, Simply Couture, Ya Los Angeles.
NOTE: the payout calculator is highly deceptive; take it from someone who knows!
As an example, for a New with Tags Nic+Zoe dress with tag price $184 you will receive $9.25. The highest I have seen is about 10% of the tag price ($24 for a tag price of $238). So my advice; take a look at your tag price and think to yourself 'Can I sell this for more than 4-5% of this price?' (if you like to gamble or don't care then go ahead I would say). You might get more, but if you do you're lucky. AND MIND, the payout above is for pristine, new with tags items. Unless you have something they are really looking for (and God knows what that might be), you are out of luck. Also, there are better places to send your designer stuff as they don't really buy anything expensive. Instead they put it on consignment and sure, that gives you more control, but it also opens you up to people adding your stuff to their cart and just renewing it every 24 hours. Basically your stuff's in limbo, no one buys it (they claim it's different people, but how likely is it that my items don't even come available for a single minute between being added to a cart, yet no one buys it?). I am trying The Real Real and Material World myself - when I have info on those I will write a review for them as well to let you know if they are any better.
LOWEST payout I have seen? $0.45 for a $74.99 new with tags top! So that estimate above is just that, an estimate and only work if your tag price is at least $120 or so. You could end up with less than 0.5% on your brand new with tags item!
Oh and if they loose your designer stuff they pay you out what they think it is worth; yes, that happened to me. So at that point you loose the control and get about 10% of the value of a $700 designer skirt (thankfully I don't pay full
I made a huge order and before I checked out I saw a note that some items may be subject 1.50 restocking fee. Well I looked into with no details about what would qualify. Low and behold, every item I got would qualify if I were to return all of it. Then it cost to return And they have no phone number to make returns or complaints. In addition, the quality of the clothes is questionable and you mine as well go to a consignment store yourself. Now I have to email and or chat my complaints. I will not be ordering with them again.
Hi Emalee,
Thanks for writing a review. Our website specifies that all items are subject to a restocking fee*. This information can be found on every single item you place in your cart (in the description) as well as your profile under "Order Returns".
*Restocking fee does not apply to item(s) not as described.
Thank you.
I bought 4 shirts and I just tried them on and they were extremely tight! Even some of the larges were tight! I'm usually a medium or a large. The sizing isn't right. Not pleased.
Hi Cara,
Thanks for your feedback. We offer customers a range of tools and services to ensure you are purchasing items that suit you. It is important that we are an online thrift and consignment store with thousands of brands, which range in sizes and fits. We offer all measurements for your reference. If you are unsure about a garment, we recommend you visit the brand website for brand specific measurements & fits, or message us via email/chat for further assistance. Thank you.
I have been buying things from thredUP for 8 years and selling items to them for about half that. I don't know what happened on the selling end but the payouts are not what they used to be. I don't know if it's because they are more popular now or what. I had a bag that paid out $38 for 6 items once. I have a bag that's being reviewed right now and it's looking like it'll pay out $4.10 for 10 things but they are going to list them for $70+... I understand that they are in the business of making profits, I totally get it. But $4 isn't going to get me very far on buying something for myself... It won't even cover shipping. I'm really disappointed in this company and I'm really disappointed that I recommended them. I am actually going to close my account with them. I'd be better off just donating my clothes and taking a tax write off..
Thank you for your feedback Gwynne. We are sorry to hear you are unsatisfied with our Clean Out program. I used to purchase a lot of stuff from thredup, but will not purchase again. The restocking fee is ridiculous. I don't know any other stores that charge a restocking fee. I am returning my last few items and getting my money back whereas I used to do store credit. I have a few coworkers who are also going to stop purchasing from them.
Thanks for your time and feedback Christie. To clarify, the restocking fee is intended to cover the cost of re listing items which includes: shipment, processing, preparing, listing, etc. It is pretty standard in the industry, and companies including Amazon, implement a minor fee. Thank you.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
Hi Heather,
Thank you for your feedback, and we are sorry to hear this has negatively impacted your thredUP experiences. We offer convenient returns on eligible items within 14 days of your order being delivered. Please note that returns are subject to a restocking fee of $1.99 per item returned, excluding items over $50. This fee is in addition to the $8.99 fee if you elect to use a shipping label provided by thredUP.
Any applicable return fees will be deducted from your final return preference, and a breakdown of your return is visible at the time you submit a return request.
