thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

This was great in concept and used to be a mutually-beneficial situation. I understand the business model, but payout have gradually lowered to the point of insult. I feel like I'm being taken advantage of... Ridiculous item payout for items. I've been paid-out $0.23 for items. Literally the fabric is worth more! Brand-new Fabletics leggings: $1.13 payout. $395 Diana Von Furstenberg worn once: $27.29

For a buyer: They deceptively list retail prices that aren't necessarily accurate and reflect brand-new retail prices to create the illusion of a good deal. The packaging is sloppy and takes a lot of time.

Bad Business
September 18, 2018

I just found Thedup and decided to order clothes for my great granddaughter for school and a two items for myself. The pants didn't fit for me and the shoes I received for my great granddaughter were a size 2 but for a baby! I wanted to send these items back but first off they do not have a telephone number even though they keep telling you that they do, I will not pay a restocking fee when I am returning the products, it should be a credit that you receive, and they do not make it easy to send the clothes back in the first place. I am going to donate the clothes they have sent so far. After getting 3 items quickly I have not received approx. 6 other items I ordered. I usually read all blogs before I decide to buy from a company, but I neglected to this time! If I had read what I just did in the past few minutes I would never have ordered and put myself through this!

Thank you for your feedback Saundra. We do not have a Customer Service phone line. Customers are not responsible for the restocking fee on items not as described. There is an option for a free return label on our website, under your order returns page. You can contact our customer service by sending a message to support@thredup.com. Thank you.

I have been an enthusiastic customer for years. I used to make large orders of things that looked good, go through them in person, and return the items that didn't look good on me for store credit. I was very happy with this arrangement since I could get name brands for reasonable prices and it was a very reasonable thrift-store type setup.
Unfortunately, the new restocking fee kills it. When you shop thrift, there is necessarily a higher rate of returns because you have a lot less certainty about what you are getting. The "slight damage" might turn out to be noticeable, or the brand you never wore before might run big. The new restocking fee on thredup penalizes customers for returning items. This is the complete opposite of what thrift store shopping is supposed to be.
I'm sorry to say, I will no longer be doing business with ThredUp.

Thank you for your feedback Rachel. The restocking fee is calculated based on the cost required to relist items which includes: shipping, processing, photographing, etc.
Most thrift stores do not allow returns at all or multiple refund options, while we continue to allow customer's to return these thrifted garments at a small fee. Thank you.

I understand that I won't make a lot of money selling things on thredup; after all, everyone has lots of kids clothes & vera bradley bags to sell, and thredup is the one doing all the work here.

But don't say you'll take returns & charge a $1.99 restocking fee PER ITEM. That's just crap... how much work is involved in "restocking" a $10.00 kid's t-shirt anyway?

I'm done with thredup.

Hi Jodie. Thank you for your review. Because every item we sell is unique, when it is returned to us it must go through a rigorous quality inspection and acceptance process as it was when received originally. To alleviate some of these costs the second time around, returned items are subject to this restocking fee. We appreciate your feedback and we are sorry to hear about this disappointment.

Sad
September 17, 2018

I love to shop Consignment shops and have found great stuff. Excited to find Thed Up and rushed to fill out my profile. I can only assume that my age was the only thing used to select my "goody bag". The minute it was opened we noticed the odor... b. o. And damp basement. It got worse. All the clothing was dreadful. Showed it to my friends (who are my age) who are all professionals and very stylish... Returned everything. Never again for me and my friends. So sad.

Restocking fee is BS!
September 17, 2018

I have been using thredUP for the past few years and I buy a ton of clothes on there. Now when something doesn't fit I end up paying for it anyways, even when I am just seeking a store credit to buy something else. I'll just go to my local thrift stores to buy things I can try on. As an online retailer you have to understand that sizes are not universal or standardized.

Thank you for your review Celia. As every item we sell is unique, when it’s returned to us it must go through an additional rigorous quality inspection and acceptance process. To alleviate some of these costs the second time around, returned items are subject to a small restocking fee. We are committed to providing the widest variety of secondhand pieces at affordable prices, and while these fees may change overtime, we're actively collecting customer feedback.

I started shopping Thredup way back in 2014 and then we're really great then. I still order from them, I have an order on the way as I type actually, for some brands they are really good but on other brands they suck. Aerie clothing used to cost between $6.00 - $15.00 on average. Now used zip-up sweatshirts listed as jackets cost 27$, that's crazy expensive for a used sweatshirt from Aerie, I can buy it new for less than that. My biggest issues though are that they change their own prices after posting them and increase the price by a few dollars. Now they have a restocking fee and are selling the clothes they DIDN'T pay you for and making money off of them! That's horrible, I sent in 2 bags of clothing and I really wish I hadn't I know I'm going to get totally ripped off and get next to nothing for both bags. For some brands buying from ThredUp are a great choice but for most brands, I want to buy from them they now charge to high a price. I personally haven't had any customer service problems, but I also haven't had to return any purchases.

UPDATE: I just got the order that I mentioned above on 9/17 - awful... the color was totally wrong and not as described it was supposed to be Black instead it was a really faded and worn Navy. The bag was all scratched and worn out looking plus there was still someone's tampons and old lipstick in it. They offered me 25% off since the bag was not as described, I had to send in pictures as proof. I said no because it wasn't worth the 35$ I would have to pay for it with the discount applied. They did not reimburse the shipping on my original order which means, either way, I'm out $12. I made sure I didn't have to pay for return shipping or a restocking fee. Hopefully, the return goes through correctly... only time will tell. Bottom line I no longer recommend shopping on there.

Bad Management
September 12, 2018

Given the disappointing policy changes at Thredup from a customer standpoint, this review by two employees (former now?) wasn't surprising:..."They also recently got a new General Manager who is running the place into the ground. He has fired 40% of the employees who have been there for long periods of time, who have made ThredUP their whole life. It used to be a place of work that was fun and understood that life is hard and things happen. But the new GM turned it into a place that if you step a toe out of line, you're out.
I'd love to see this place turn around."

And this from another employee:

"If you want to work for a company that doesn't care about its employees then please work for thredUP. Corporate really needs to learn how to treat their employees especially the ones doing the labor! (DC's and retail locations) Business model is successful but horrible leadership."

It makes some sense that the buying culture has changed given the negative internal management system reboot. If the policies have become more draconian, look to how their employees are treated. The business model may have been successful up til now, but it would be business wise to note how many new negative new customer reviews are out there at this time, especially from long-time users of the Thredup site.

Good but now what?
September 12, 2018

I have been happy with the quality of the clothing I've bought at ThredUP. I've also been happy, in general, with their buying procedure. I liked the ease of ThredUp's polka-dot bag. I put the items in the bag, mailed it, and they gave me store credit. I felt it was a fair trade. I made $23.00 for the bag I sent in a month ago. However, today I learned that ThredUp is no longer accepting clothing for cash or credit, although they will take donations. I can't imagine that many people will send in their donations when they could sell their clothing on E-bay or donate it to the Goodwill. I'm sad and confused by this turn of events at ThredUp. I don't know where they will be getting their merchandise or their customers.

Thanks for your review Catherine. We currently have an overabundance of bags being sent in by customers. All of our teams are working hard to keep up with the growth, and to provide the best possible experience for our customers as we expand our capabilities. We hope to be back to processing bags at a faster pace, and until then we have a slight hold on bag orders. We invite customers to check back in the following weeks to see the status and order a Clean Out Kit.

Beware the Goody Boxes
September 11, 2018

I decided to try thredUP's new Goody Box program since I've liked services like StitchFix in the past. You fill out a survey telling them what types of clothes you're in the market for, and they send you a box with ten items they hope you'll love. You keep (and pay for) what you like and return the rest at no charge, other than a $20 service fee which is deducted from the price of anything you keep.

Here's the problem: I returned my entire box of clothes and they charged me for all of them. I have the email saying they saw that my shipping label had been scanned and that my package was on its way back to them. I have the email saying that they received all my items back. And then I got an email saying that they were charging me for everything since they didn't see that my items were on their way back.

Now they charged my debit card more than $400 and haven't been responding to my customer service emails (it's been six days) and they don't have a phone number available to call. I'm checking with the bank today about filing a dispute with them, because this level of mistake and disastrous customer service is absolutely unacceptable. They should be shut down for this level of negligence. I'm lucky to be in a position where $400 gone missing is a major inconvenience, but thankfully not an emergency. However, there are plenty of others who could have been prevented from buying groceries by this type of mistake, or who would have been buried in overdraft fees.

Get your act together, thredUP. An honest error is one thing, but to have no way for people to get ahold of you to fix it is a horrible way to run a business.

UPDATE: I just perused their customer support Twitter feed hoping to find a solution there, and instead I found several other reviews with the exact same problem! There are no fewer than three other complaints about being charged for a full Goody Box that has been returned.

Bottom line: DO NOT PURCHASE THEIR GOODY BOXES! Their process is apparently unreliable, and you will be charged the full amount regardless of what you keep.

DO NOT USE
September 9, 2018

Sell yourself or give to charity. They are scamming people. They are keeping the items for themselves or selling and keeping 95%+ of the selling price. I sent in over 50+ items - tagged and in excellent condition. I was getting pinged "my item sold" over and over again. The prices listed were between $9.99 - $20. I laughed at the 7.49 they gave me to purchase items or place in a prepaid card. The women running are cons in my opinion. I also don't believe for one second that any kind of money earned is going to any charity there's no proof of it.

Too bad
September 9, 2018

Prior to the restocking fee I would have given thredUP 4 stars. But now it's too much of a gamble. The appeal of thredUP was being able to have the thrift shop experience without going to the store. You could try things on, try things out, find things you never would have found in a department store and have no worry about them not fitting as you could just return them for credit if they didn't fit. Now I have to pay $2 PER item to return. If they did a more consistent job of describing their items and they weren't USED to begin with so I could trust quality, I MIGHT take the risk... but as it is now, I can only get things I'm 100% sure will fit me which limits the items I can get significantly. All the fun of thrift shopping is gone.

Thanks for leaving a review Jeanne. The restocking fee does not affect items not as described. Our order returns page has an option for any items received with discrepancies and/or flaws. This ensures you will not be charged the restocking fee. Simply select “item not as described” from the drop down menu and describe the issue. We hope this information offers some clarification.

I have placed numerous orders through Thred Up. Last night I accidentally got someone else's order. Trying to get a return label so I could ship the box back and it could get routed to the correct person was a headache. * on the chat line was rude and never even thanked me for my time or attention for helping their customer. I was trying to do the right thing. It turned into an experience in which I asked to speak to management or leadership. Gaby would not give me a phone number and only when pressured did she give me the general support email address. I asked to cash out my credit and was told it was not possible. This was once a GREAT PLACE. Now, the descriptions on clothes are not accurate, the prices practically the same as retail and their customer service is rude.

Restocking fee must go
September 8, 2018

Prior to the recent restocking fee policy, I would have given thredup 5 stars.

In fact, I recommended to many people over the last several years. Yes, they're not an awesome way to make money selling your clothes. Whoever said "you're better off donating" is partially correct, although I'd argue that mailing a thredup bag is more convenient than driving to your local thrift store. For buying used clothing, they WERE great.

However, the restocking fee is absurd. Particularly given they cannot guarantee sizing on clothes. Even if you know how you typically fit in a certain brand, clothing can change size/shape with wash/wear, and this is a used clothing website. No longer having free return shipping has ended my days with thredup.

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. In order to maintain low prices and continue to offer a huge selection of high-quality secondhand styles, returned items may be subject to a restocking fee. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way.

Our Customer Service team is here to help with any shopping questions you may have before you make your purchase. After all, it's our mission for you to find the perfect pieces for your closet. We hope this offers some clarification.

Nickel and diming
September 7, 2018

I use ThredUp primarily for the deep discounts on the items. I have sold a bag of clothes there before and received $5.61 for 10 items (one they did not accept, which is funny because I bought it from them but missed the return window). I received yard sale pricing for the majority of these clothes - less than 50 cents on everything other than one item sold on consignment that went for $2.06. I would be more on board with the "clean out bag" concept if they were actually donating what they don't take, but they sell a "reject rescue" box, so they are making money (around $2) on items they did not pay for. To me, that seems a little sleazy.

Since I did not care for the selling aspect, I stick to buying. The items take a while to ship, and are not always adequately described. I have received many errors with sizes or descriptions, which used to be fine because I would just return it for store credit. I would also be more willing to buy a brand I wasn't sure about because I knew returns were simple. Returns are still simple; however, they have now added a "restocking fee". It was just 99 cents, but now it's crept up to $1.99 *per item*.

They also increase the price if they are shipping from a warehouse further away from you. You can't actually see what this upcharge is, but it's just another way they tack on additional fees.

I wasn't happy with the initial restocking fee, but accepted it. But with the $2 loss on items that I am buying without being able to try it on - well, I need to draw a line somewhere. No where else do stores charge a fee for trying on an item, which is what I am doing when I order. I have actually never been charged a restocking fee for clothing items I have purchased online. I have about $40 in store credit and as soon as I use that up, I'm going to be done with ThredUp. I have purchased nearly $1000 worth of clothing from them, over $800 just since May, and was happy to do so! But with all the nickel and dime return fees, in addition to prices becoming much less competitive as they have in the past, I'll go back to shopping elsewhere.

ThredUp used to be such a great concept, but I feel the company has become much too greedy. They don't pay nearly enough, they overcharge for many items and the additional return fees are just too much.

Thanks for the feedback Shauna. To clarify, if customers ever receive an item not as described, they will not be charged restocking fees. We offer an option on the Order Return drop down menu for customers to detail the flaws/discrepancies on these items. Return fees as well as any additional fees may be added or removed based on production and inventory listing costs.

I sent in a lot of expensive pieces, some with tags and I only noticed items missing when they processed my bag. When I inquired they told me their standards were not met. Really... tagged items didn't meet standards? They claimed one of my blouses was sleepwear even though the company doesn't sell sleepwear. They don't even know fashion trends or brand relevance. And when I called them on it they did nothing to resolve it... they just stuck to their first claim. I bet someone there is walking around with a very nice blouse for free.

I've shopped here for many years and sent several bags in for consignment. I realize in order to keep the selling prices low, maybe they're not going to pay out on consigned items as well as other sites, but it's a balance, and until the last year or two, they've managed that balance well.

Now they've changed several policies and even though they still pay pennies on the dollar for items I send in (if they buy them at all), they've also raised their prices, making the sale price not all that different than you can buy new on sale somewhere else. And to add even more bitterness and bite to the user experience, they've added "restocking fees" on returns and premium fees if the item you happen to want to buy comes from a warehouse that isn't your "home warehouse". I recently bought a sweater that was described as "looks brand new", only to discover on delivery that it was heavily discolored and pilling. They asked me to pay a "restock fee" on this item, even though it was their fault they wrote an inaccurate description for the item when I purchased it.

This used to be a great place to shop, but I think I'm done now. I would not be surprised if in the next year or two, many customers will come to the same conclusion and this site will close up shop.

A couple of months ago I discovered thredUP and was really excited. I ordered close to $1500 worth of clothes & shoes. I was able to try new brands that I would not have been able to afford before, but there was a lot of items I had to return for sizing, since I had no clue about sizing for those brands. I just went back to the site to order more clothes and see that there is a $1.99 restocking fee per item returned. There is no way that this will work for me. Sizing varies with each brand and I will have to look else where for my shopping. I am truly disappointed in this new policy.

Better off donating

I sent in my bag with over 35 kids clothes. All of which were name brand. All in like new condition and several with tags. I even had. Brand new pair of Birkenstocks with the tags attached. They only excepted 5 things. The ones that they did except weren't even new with tags. I think they are keeping the good stuff for themselves. They are criminals. Never donate your clothes or items to this company.
