ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

STAY AWAY! My first experience with thredUP was just okay. I sent mid-grade items in excellent condition and I made around $50 so I was motivated to send another bag this fall. With a little more confidence - I sent them fantastic designer clothing including a never-worn Chloe top. I also threw in a BNWT Brooks Brothers Shirt Dress similar to the one Meghan Markle wore to an event a few months ago. They only took three items, all in used condition. The new/designer items disappeared into thin-air and I was notified they were not accepted. I had not opted to have the items shipped back based on the relative success of my first consignment bag with them - clearly a big mistake and subsequent learning on my part. I really think thredup is a SCAM. There is no quality control so people going through your bags will keep whatever they want and mark it unaccepted. I also noticed that they charge a lot of items you can get cheaper elsewhere (same brand/category/type) Definitely not impressed. Every time I go onto the site to see how my bundles are doing it takes me 5 minutes to find what I need. Customer service - friendly but unhelpful and chat is not immediate, it can take them hours to respond. For designer items I am definitely sticking with The RealReal. I have done so many transactions wtih them and they are by far the best in their market.
The item descriptions are untrue. They describe used items that show signs of wear as "like new" I need a refund and a refund label. I have sent two e-mails requesting this and no reply. There is no working number for customer service. This is false advertisement.
Hi Caroline,
Thanks for your feedback. Our records indicate that Customer Service has followed up with an email to ****linefraser79@gmail.com. Please respond accordingly. Thank you.
I gave Polo pullovers in excelent used shape. They sold for 18.00 and i got. 55 cents, 1.40. If I had put all of this in a lot on eBay I probably would've got $100 for everything I have. This place is a joke do t be fooled by their master marketers. I sent Michael Kors Pelot Tommy Hilfiger Ann Taylor really nice brands in my total payout on eight garments for women and boys was $12.68. Don't waste your time.
Hi Carrie, we are sorry to hear you were not satisfied with your recent clean out kit value. It’s important to remember that using thredUP means that you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer. But what you may miss in earnings, you earn back in overall convenience. Our goal is to help make our customers’ lives easier by helping them get rid of unwanted items from their closets from the convenience of their own home. Thank you.
The boots does not fit well. I cannot get the zipper up. I have been buying a lot from thredup and it's my first time to have a return item.
Hi Angeles,
Thanks for your feedback. We are glad to see that a Customer Service agent was able to resolve this issue for you. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to assist you. Thank you.
First time using ThredUp for selling my daughter's clothes with "clean out." Absolutely never again. How infuriating this was. I likely sent 250 used but perfect condition name brand items and so far I've gotten around $12! I'm all for a business making money but this is a total rip off. No thanks, I'll stick to Craigslist.
Thanks for your feedback Kelly. T’s important to remember that using thredUP means that you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer. But what you may miss in earnings, you earn back in overall convenience. Our goal is to help make our customers’ lives easier by helping them get rid of unwanted items from their closets from the convenience of their own home. While you might be able to earn slightly more by selling elsewhere, thredUP does all of the hard work for you: no driving, no negotiating with buyers, no dealing with rejected items.
I've been using thredUP for a few years and generally like it. It's certainly fun to scroll through - and I'm a serious vintage/ used clothing person so I like their concept. I don't usually mind their clothing costs, payouts or even the new really silly $1.99 fee per piece for returning something - even though it's petty and off putting.
Recently I sent in a cleanout bag and was horrified at what they kept and what they disposed of, though. I earned less than a dollar credit for thousands of dollars worth of clothes and accessories that were mostly rejected. I even included a dress I bought from them a month or so earlier that I decided not to wear (& never did) and they didn't even accept that. I could have sold that stuff at my favorite consignment shop and made some cash or donated it, received a tax deduction, and made someone's whole shopping day with a "real find!" It was really weird and made me wonder who's is watching that process.
What did they accept? A super pilling sweater from TJ Maxx and a 10 year old skirt from
Goodwill that had been in the corner of my closet. (Honestly, the two things I threw in at the last minute and thought they'd just recycle/donate) I apologize to whomever bought them. They could have had them free of charge.
It makes me wonder who's doing the sorting and where their rejects are going. Cuz y'all, some good stuff is somewhere ;)
Hi Currey, we are sorry to hear you were not satisfied with your recent Clean Out acceptance rate. It is in our best interest, as well as the customer's, to accept as many items as possible. Sometimes, we can not accept items due to overstock and overall inventory supply & demand. This is why we highly recommend and offer Return Assurance, for items that may get rejected that you would like returned to you. If you would like to donate to us in the future, for a tax receipt, we offer donation kits on our website. Thank you.
Be very careful buying from this site they are literally selling you consignment items for more than they are sold for or for the same price. I have seen numerous of Forever21 dresses and clothes priced at 23.99,19.99 or 16.99 when they are a lot cheaper in store brand new. DO NOT LET THIS COMPANY SELL YOU USED CLOTHES FOR MORE THAN WHAT THEY ARE WORTH. A quick of show google search will show you
Hi Mich,
We are sorry to hear you are not satisfied with our platform. Pricing for various consignment items is dependent on each seller's discretion. We allow sellers to edit prices which results in sometimes higher prices for certain items. However, we do strive to offer up to 90% off items from best selling brand names. We hope that wherever you chose to shop, that you continue to participate in a circular economy and clothing sustainability. Thank you.
After my review I was contacted by a Thredup representative who gave me numerous of excuses but all in all offered me absolutely nothing for all the money I lost from Thredup. The representative told me things would improve (and I tried to give them a chance) but unfortunately it only goes down hill. LOL the irony of me complaining about these sudden increases on my first review then suddenly I look and see the prices have increased more. Are you kidding me thredup? Are you really going to try to pacify me and then try to sell us forever dresses for 19.99 that cost the same if not less in the store. You continue to give sellers chump change for high end clothes or even normal mall clothes and then sell their stuff for way more then its value or the same price. I had a cart of things and literally watched all the prices of each item in my cart increase. Do you not know how awful and unprofessional that is? Imagine have a cute little dress or shirt in your cart for 8.99 and you wake up the next morning to see its now 13.99 now in you cart. What a joke... I'll be making a full review on my youtube channel
As a longtime seller on thredup, I will no longer be selling anything to them. I used to get payouts per bag over $100. Since they changed their pricing policies, I'm now getting about $5-7... on things they say are in high demand. From now on, i'll Just dropoff at goodwill. If I'm going to get nothing, at least I'd like to feel like things will serve some good. I'm furious at how obnoxious they gotten. Stay away you'll just feel used.
Hi Elan, we are sorry to hear you are unsatisfied with our Clean Out Program. We offer a lot of different resources for our sellers including a transparent payout percentage guide and Return Assurance for rejected items. While our clean out process may not offer the highest payouts, we try our best to provide more convenience (no driving, negotiating with buyers, or dealing with rejected items). For this reason, we are not able to provide the greatest payouts for items that are already highly discounted.
Thank you.
I was sold $100 plus magnolia in horrible condition. There is tar on the bottom of the shoe! Unable to get in touch with a real person
Hi Jessica, we are sorry to hear about this. Our records indicate that a Customer Service representative reached out to you via ***ath01@comcast.net.
For further assistance, please communicate via that email to support@thredup.com. Our agents are more than happy to assist you.
I would give them infinity amount of stars if I only could, this website is go to website is you want to buy or sell secondhand items. I have done both I bought few things and each of them was in a great as described condition I also sold and I am still selling because they pay outright fair price I would say very fair more they pay more then material world ( the material world website should be shot down because they pay almost nothing) crossroads is paying more then material world but less then thredup. Consigning with thredup is a pleasure they pay way more the % amount for sold item is way higher then the The Real Real ( which pays less unless you reach 10,000 in sales but still less then Thredup. I can't thank you enough for a great customer service, amazing customer services, very helpful and you don't have to follow up in order to get your issue resolved. Thank you all for a great customer service
This place is a freaking nightmare to deal with. Buyer beware and be sure to take your package to a post office or UPS store and make sure they scan it right away to prove you sent it back to them. They will (a week later) attempt to charge you for the box in its entirety because they use a third-party shipper that works at a snails pace to return the boxes to them.
Hi Lisa, if you ever have any questions regarding your package delivery we recommend reaching out to Customer Service who can assist you right away. We can partner with Fedex to confirm the whereabouts of your shipments and confirm any delays/issues. Thank you.
Do NOT resell on thread up. I was never notified that my listing was posted and my $198 new with tags jacket was listed and sold for $30 giving me a $4.95 payout-less than what the box cost me to send the item. I would have been better off donating the jacket to my local charity. Very displeased with the process and company.
Hi Mallory,
All sellers are notified of their item acceptance and earnings once the kit is processed. You receive an email to the address listed on your account. We recommend checking your spam folder, in case it has been delivered incorrectly. Our Customer Service agents are always here to assist you.
I've ordered dresses from ThredUP before, they were all great. But, today I found a super fake handbag listed as Michael Kors, (the handbag has NX printed on it even though authentic Michael Kors handbags obviously say MK) and messaged ThredUP to let them know. They responded with a generic "We employ a team to verify authenticity of each handbag" Okaayyy... even though the bag has the letters NX printed all over it... authentic where? Better retrain your team or something, ThredUP!
Thanks for the feedback Marge. We are sorry to hear about this. If you ever question the authenticity of an item, we highly suggest you partner with our Customer Service team to authenticate or return the item. If you still need assistance with this, please provide the email associated with your account, order # and item # so we may better assist you. Thank you.
I've made a ton of purchases through them in the past. I was incredibly happy with certain items such as Free People dresses for good prices. However, other purchases were disappointing. I've recieved stained and ripped clothes that were not discribed to be as such on the item description. As people have stated, you can get mostly all of these items NEW and CHEAPER when these brands have sales. I'm so disappointed because I initially loved the premise of ThreadUp. Regarding selling, I sent them a bag of barely used and some unused clothing. Brands were sent that are originally pricey like Zella, Lulus, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters and Vans shoes yet nothing in my bag was accepted. They said it will all get recycled in a recycling fabric factory. Those shoes and pants, etc. could have gone to my local Good Will where someone could have bought them and put them to use. I will no longer support this company. Hopefully a competitor steps in with the same premise but better management.
Hi Mel, we are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with your recent clean out experience. We do not guarantee the acceptance of all items sent to us and provide Return Assurance for this reason. If you ever receive items not as described on our site, we recommend you reach out to our Customer Service who are more than happy to assist with a return. Thank you.
I had looked up designer names of items I was selling on ebay and figured I could send them to Thredup and have them sell them for me instead. I wasn't expecting to be paid 62 cents for a LIKE NEW UGG DOWN VEST. I wrote to them trying to get the rest of my items back (horrified because a NWT NANETTE LEPORE DRESS was going to get me only $3.45 if it sold!) The person answering my messages didn't seem phased at all and I had to pat not only the $11 to get a bag of my "rejected" clothes sent back to me, but an additional $5.99 to get my 8 items sent back. Absolutely disgusted. Word of mouth is EVERYTHING. How do you treat people like this? Not even an offer of credit for my lost vest.
Hi Alexandra, we are sorry to hear you were not satisfied with our Clean Out program.
To clarify, the Ugg vest sold and you were paid out. It was not "lost" at any point. While you might be able to earn slightly more by selling elsewhere, thredUP does all of the hard work for you: no driving, no negotiating with buyers, no dealing with rejected items.
All seller's are responsible for the standard shipping fee to reclaim consignment items. This information is made available before sending items to ThredUP.
I donated at least $600 worth of clothes. They accepted a Reformation dress that is only worn once, only half-a-year-old, bought for $218; a Zara turtleneck sweater that is completely new with tags and was bought for $50; a Silence and Noise Jumpsuit that was only worn once and was bought for $70; a ZARA W&B Collection Dress that was bought only 4 months ago, worn only once, bought for $40; a Ann Taylor skirt that has never been worn, along with 6 other items all from well known brands like Urban Outfitters and BB Dakota. However, they only gave me $30.5 Reformation store credit. They state on website that "When determining pricing, we take many factors into consideration: estimated retail price, seasonality, age of the item, quality, style, and the current make-up of our existing inventory." However, I believe ThreadUp does not evaluate the clothes properly based on their own criteria. They are obviously taking advantage of sellers and trying to maximize their own profit.
Thanks for taking the time to discuss your clean out kit, Angela. In the interest of transparency, we offer all payout expectations and percentages, on our website. This is to ensure sellers are well informed before sending us their items. Since this is a resell website, we cover the task of processing and preparing your items to be listed on the site. This means production cost, which is a factor in determining payout percentages. If you ever have more specific questions about your bag(s), please reach out to our Customer Service team via support@thredup.com. Thank you.
I have been shopping with thred up for almost 2 years now and have loved the quality of items I have bought off their site. I have sold to them plenty of times with their clean out bag system, and while I haven't always received the best turn out as far as cashing out big after selling my items to thred up, it never really bothered me much until today. I just received an email saying a clean out bag I sent in has been received and out of a bag that I knew would be worth more than a couple bucks and some pocket change, only 3 items were accepted in a bag that I sent stuffed to capacity. I am extremely disappointed in this clean out bag turn out, and have about had it selling to Thred Up. I honestly don't even think I am going to shop with them anymore either. I really do not understand how after sending in so many bags to them and never having much of an issue before even though I knew then I was also being cheated out of my sellings, that this clean out bag would for sure be worth more. I hate saying that I am through with Thred Up, but I sadly can't keep supporting a company that can't be of better service with their own clean out system to their loyal customers.
Hi Ciara, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. For your reference, a majority of the items in bag #B22M2-2RWFX were rejected due to
"unclean/stain" as well as our current inventory overstock of similar items. Acceptance is influenced by supply and demand. If you would ever like us to review your bag and offer more details, please don't hesitate to reach out to support@thredup.com or chat with us on our website, M-F 7am - 4pm. Thank you.
I never received over half of my items in an order I paid more than 150$ for clothing items for me and my baby girl. I received 1 package of 3 and the rest say they were delivered to my address but I never received them. There is no place for me to call and complain or speak to anyone over the phone. I tried to send a complaint via email and no one got back to me. FedEx won't take responsibility for it and clearly Threadup isn't going to. Guess I'm out 100 or more dollars? I will never use Threadup again and I definitely won't be sending any of my items in for consignment after some of the reviews I've read on here. I'd rather take them to my local Goodwill.
Hi Megan, we understand your concern. Our records indicate that a Customer Service representative has reached out to you via your account email ***anfs@me.com. If Fedex marks a package as delivered and you have not received it, our policy is that we must wait 10 days before moving forward with a refund. This is to ensure the package is not actually on its away, awaiting to be delivered to you. Please follow up with Customer Service via your existing email thread. Thank you.
They charged $8.99 to return EACH item plus a $2 restocking fee.
Received 3 items. One was a top' that came cropped (not described), one was massively too small (and my usual size in that designer), one I simply didn't like.
We appreciate the feedback Deana. We do offer free return labels, if you do not wish to pay $8.99. You will receive a refund to store credit. If you receive an item not as described, and wish to return it, you will not be charged the restocking fee. Simply generate your return, select “item not as described” and leave details regarding the item’s discrepancy. This will ensure you are not charged the fee. If you need assistance with this matter, please reach out to Customer Service via support@thredup.com. Thank you.
I especially love the pictures of the bags and shoes. It gives me an actual idea of the quality of the items
Hi Denice, thanks so much for your feedback! We appreciate the support and are happy to hear you are enjoying ThredUP. :)
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
Hi Sarah. Thank you for your review. While thredUP typically accepts about 40% of a Clean Out Bag to sell, we use a variety of tools and techniques to accurately identify seemingly minor flaws that are often overlooked. Because our processors are responsible for ensuring every item that is listed on our shop, they are strict about accepted items as our customers are expecting to purchase like-new quality items.
Our ultimate goal is to accept as many items from customer bags as possible, however, there are times where we have to be selective about what styles meet our acceptance standards. If additional questions arise about your Clean Out bag, please contact our support team via email, the app, chat or our social media channels.
