ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I sold to Thredup in 11/18. My first bag went smoothly, but I requested two shipping labels for one clean-out kit and the first kit was received and processed, I received update emails along the process, and while they hold your money for two weeks before you can cash out, I felt like it went well. The second bag however, got lost in the process somehow and after repeated emails trying to determine its status, I got one on 11/27 (three weeks after I sent it) saying it had been received and was in processing, which could take two weeks. Weeks later, they still hadn't processed it so I followed up again. On 1/8, (two months after I sent the bag!) they told me my complete bag had been donated. AND just checked the website: they are selling items from that bag. I know because one of the designer dresses that was in there, I had gotten hemmed from a maxi to a cocktail dress and it's on the site as the cocktail version, which was never made by the designer. Absolute scammers.
First - I paid for expedited shipping that I did not receive, as they didn't do it in the promised time frame. I had to ask for my $16 back that I paid for this. I also paid $10.99 (Return Assurance) for them to return my clothing they didn't want/couldn't sell. If you haven't realized already... just these two things alone are stupid and wasteful.
Second - they kept and sold several name brand items in good shape. What they kept should have brought more than my TOTAL of $14. 67. 100% I could have sold it all myself on Facebook for twice that due to the shape alone. Oh but wait. It DID bring much more than my total of a whopping $14.67 - they made over $100. The percentages we are given are just TRASH. That's all.:)
Third - resorting back to the fees in my first point, those are deducted from your earnings. So my "total earned" was -$12.32. NOTE THE NEGATIVE. SO I WOULD HAVE PAID THEM had I not spoken up for them not holding up their end in regards to the time frame.
Fourth - You are apparently given a time frame to reclaim any items not sold or they belong to ThredUp. Because that shouldn't be covered by the $10.99 I paid to have the rest of my clothing returned, right?
This is complete trash. 100% a waste of time. They kill you with fees and make it seem like something helpful and fantastic. This was my first and LAST time using them and I would never in a million years recommend this service to my most hated enemy.
AND I NEVER LEAVE REVIEWS LIKE THIS. THIS WAS HORRIBLE! I hope everyone considering using them to help get rid of any clothing, accessories, etc will be able to see this. Best of luck!
Hi Ashley,
We are sorry to hear that you were unsatisfied with your Clean Out experience. It’s important to remember that using thredUP means that you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer. But what you may miss in earnings, you earn back in overall convenience. Our goal is to help make our customers’ lives easier by helping them get rid of unwanted items from their closets from the convenience of their own home. While you might be able to earn slightly more by selling elsewhere, thredUP does all of the hard work for you: no driving, no negotiating with buyers, no dealing with rejected items. We hope this offers more insight. Thank you.
I sent THREE FULL bags to thread up some of my items still had tags on them!' I have never recieved a payment they cannot seem to find my items DIDNOT make a DIME off my items! I should have gave them to a local charity and after hearing on this page the types of payments people recieved it is a complete RIP Off! Donot sell your used clothing to these CROOKS! You might as well give them to friends try to sell them to local used clothing stores or give them to charity! Very sad I spent my hard earned time and my GOOD clothes to these CROOKS!
Hi Teresa. Thank you for your review. While we do not show you've contacted our support team in the past, we have sent you a message to gather additional information about your account. Thank you.
Unfortunately, I don't feel as though a "huge weight has been lifted" off my shoulders by sending you my pile of clothing. I sent you guys nearly 30 pieces and you accepted 4.12 of which were premium brand denim including True Religion, Seven jeans etc. Two of them were brand new items which I never wore. You mentioned in this email that you've accepted 66% of the items I've sent which's 2/3 which should be around 20 pieces! Then in another email I'm told that you've accepted 4.
I feel completely robbed. Please explain to me how am I going to trust a company like yours?
Also nothing works on your website. I did not accept the upfront payout since your website never gave me the choice to click on anything. I demand the gross payout that I was owed.
I sent the following email to your company and I received no reply.
Your company STOLE my items for nothing and I feel like I have been scammed.
Please do the right thing and make it right!
Jonathan
Hi Jonathan. Thank you for reaching out. We have reviewed your support emails further, and do show you were in contact with a member of our support team regarding these requests. We do apologize your Cleaning Out experience did not go as planned. It’s important to remember that using thredUP means that you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer. But what you may miss in earnings, you earn back in overall convenience.
I dont know what these bad reviews are about... zI ordered over 30 items my first order. Every single item was in perfect condition, great quality & wrapped perfect... everything fit perfect as well.
I think some just dont understand how to shop consignment and order the wrong things therefore are dissapointed... I on the other hand could not be more satisfied! Super excited to shop again
Attached are just 2 of the dresses I bought. Just beautiful
This is a joke. I sent BRAND NEW clothes and am getting up to a 21cent payout. Seriously, why bother. Wishing I would have given it to my cleaning lady like I usually do. Damn sure won't ever shop, or sell here. TOTAL RIPOFF!
Hi Kelly, we are sorry to hear that our Clean Out program did not meet your expectations. E try to be as transparent as possible with our payouts. Our goal is to be the easiest way to thrift, not necessarily the most profitable. Sellers may cross-reference their payout estimates, here at any time prior to sending in their items >> thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator

If you don't have the time to either donate or sell online, thredup might be for you if you are willing to take the disappointment of them discarding good items because they claim it doesn't meet their strict standards. The payout for the majority items that you send them will be about 50 cents. They pay better for Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren but unless you pay that $10.99 upfront fee to have your items returned, beware that they will recycle those items for their own profit and not give you one red dime. Worst customer service ever. When you try to complain all they want to do is cut and paste canned messages. I was stupid enough to send them three good name brand handbags without paying the upfront fee and they did not list them meanwhile they will list Walmart items rattly. Worst company ever.
Hi Lynn - we've sent you a private message so we can gather further account information. Our hope is to always manage expectations initially around what you can make with us and we're sorry your Clean Out did not go as expected. We do provide the payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) and display our payout structure (https://bit.ly/2rjNhPx) to allow customers to get a better idea of how much they'll earn. We look forward to speaking further.
I was so excited to receive the 10 handbag box for $90.00. I opened the box and saw some pretty tissue paper covering the top. I dug down and found 5 bags neatly wrapped in tissue. The bags wrapped in tissue were low value target brands made of vinyl. The "better" bags were underneath rolling around the box, unwrapped. Seemed odd. I actually received 11 bags. One went right into the trash as it was a crossbody with broken strap hardware. One was a cheap satin new with tags clutch. 3 were clean vinyl satchels in the $30 new range and in 7/10 condition. One laptop case out of vinyl with a ripped lining 4/10. One white plastic cosmetic giveaway bag, not worth the time to flip it, one madden girl bag with hardened nail polish on lining 4/10.3 actual leather bags with wear so severe that they are 4/10. I'm pretty good at putting lipstick on a pug, but these bags, for $90 have nothing redeeming about them. My local consignment store is likely my only option and I'm sure they won't take most of them. It's not that the bar is set high, it's that this batch of threadup bags is garbage. Just don't do it. The rescue box videos from months ago show some real gems, but that was then and this is now. I understand the rescue box sales are of items that they used to donate but now ship to the unsuspecting resellers. They should stick to stuff they aged out of the website and get some quality back before they tank the whole concept.
Hello Ravatel, thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your Handbag Rescue Box. We are trying out this new feature and appreciate all feedback as it is necessary to helping us improve. We see that a Customer Service agent has applied 20% off your order as a courtesy. Please let us know if there is anything else we may do to assist you and we will gladly do so. Thank you!
I wanted to sell my Casio watch. The package they have me was not good for jewelry because the lady at FedEx said it would break. I had to pay extra money for a small box but I thought it was worth it because I thought i would still make a profit. The sold my $17 watch with my tag still on it for 25 cents! That is dirt cheap. I literally made no profit.
Hi Samantha. Thank you for your review. In reviewing your payout for this watch, item 30998757, I can confirm that the earnings you received are in alignment with the payout estimates we provide to our customers. Upfront payout offers are based on the overall desirability of the item based on factors such as brand, original price, material, size, etc. To view the details of how much we pay for accepted items, please visit: https://bit.ly/2R5gppG.
Don't send your clothes in, you will be ripped off! I sent a new, without tags Show Me Your Mumu dress in to be sold on ThredUp. Perfect quality, a brand that ThredUp sells, I was looking forward to making some money off of it. ThredUp then replied that my item was not a brand that they carry. I wrote back saying that the brand was indeed on their brand list. They apologised and gave me a $5 credit. That dress was worth over $100! They now reply to my emails by showing the $5 credit. Where is my dress?! I never write reviews, but had to share. Save yourselves.
Hi Hillary,
We appreciate you taking the time to communicate with our team. You were awarded $10 for the item which is the total you would have earned had we accepted it. The dress was rejected. Rejected items are placed into our Rescue Program unless otherwise specified by the seller by adding Return Assurance to a bag. Don't hesitate to reach out directly to us if you have any further questions. Thank you.
It took a couple of days for a response to my query but customer service at Thredup was helpful and polite and they solved my problem ASAP even though they had no obligation to do so. Thank you Malisa!
I like buying second hand, I think it's ethical and good for budgeting and ThredUp is fair and good quality. They have very high standards for what they will sell, which is the reason for many of the bad reviews. But they're a business trying to sell stock and old clothes are not worth much unless they're designer.
If you want to buy from ThredUp my suggestion is to give it a go :)
Thank you for your feedback Ashleigh. We greatly appreciate your support and engagement. Don't ever hesitate to reach out to us for any assistance. Enjoy the rest of your day!
I sent in a full bag of clothing. They only sold $12.74 dollars and I have no idea what happened to the rest. They never consigned my Givenchy Dress that I wore to my son's wedding and several other expensive pieces. If you want to get things back it is almost impossible. I tried to cash in the whopping $12.74 and it wouldn't let me. The only button that I could press was to use it as a credit. The pieces that were sold was a few Guess tops from my daughter. I think they take the more expensive pieces and either the employees keep them or they sell under a different name. The most aggravating part is that you can't call and talk to anyone. I complained in a chat session and the women never responded to my complaint and never explained any of my concerns. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with. DON'T EVER USE THEM!
Hi Joan,
Thanks for your feedback. It's important to note that we provide a payout percentage structure for our customers, to ensure they are aware of their potential earnings before sending us items. If you would like us to review your bag, we are more than welcome to do so. Simply message Customer Service via support@thredup.com or send us a quick message with your account email. Thank you.
They refunded the shipping as a 'courtesy' for my 'mistake'. After a few more days of back-and-forth, telling them that I made no mistake and that following their contractual obligations did not amount to a courtesy (which resulted in them essentially calling me a liar) they finally - finally! - admitted to a website "erorr" (their spelling).
No compensation, no viable solution. No longer a customer.
Hi Mignon, we are sorry to hear this. It appears the Customer Service agent helped you to the best of her ability. Sometimes inquiries are misinterpreted and this can affect the outcome. We apologize for any inconvenience and were happy to refund you the fee. Thank you.
I have a bundle to which I am trying to add, but your site won't let me - I can only pay for and ship what's in the cart, leaving the bundle untouched. I don't want to ship yet. I contacted customer service via email (no phone, and your live chat doesn't work) but I haven't heard back. I don't want to lose the items in my cart, and I don't want to pay for two shipping charges when there should be none. Is anybody out there? Please help.
Time sensitive.
I purchased shoes which were ok but the skirts I purchased had stretch bands that were starched out so I contacted them and they generated a return label - but then deducted $8.99 from the total. I skirts I bought were H&M which aren't expensive but I love the ones I have so I didn't mind paying their price. I'll stick with Goodwill. Lost a customer over $8.99, not smart.
Thanks for your feedback Lorri. As a one time courtesy, we have added an $8.99 credit to your account, the cost of shipping. It is important to note that we do not refund shipping fees or items not as described. However, customers are not responsible for restocking fees for these items. If you ever need assistance, do not hesitate to reach out to us. Thank you.
First things first. The first 2 times I used them they were reasonable so I sent in 3 more bags and they didn't buy barley any of it. BUT! They did send an un purchased item of mine to a flipping Youtube person that they inboxed on there show with MY $2200 dress that they DIDNT buy from meThat's criminal that's all I'm saying. I didn't get an email saying don't bother us until you have the entire story. Omg r u serious. Also if you send something to them it takes like 3weeks to a moth to get there people! Tell me that's not weird. I sent something to Dubai and it got there in 5 days. Are you telling my thread up has some secret underground stop your mail for weeks team? They still have a bag in route to them sent sooooooo long ago. I checked it's location and it took 2weeks to get from Sacramento to Chicago. Come on people. So now they will get my bag and give me $4 basically. Send your stuff to me people I will sell it for double at 7/11 sweAr true story. These people have a different shade then average.
Hi Cati. Thank you for your review and we apologize your recent experiences have not gone as expected. The bag you've referenced, bag B2cw7-76npm, is still being processed. Please send us an email if there are additional questions about this bag upon processing.
I recently sent a bag FULL of barely worn up to date clothes. Thred Up only accepted four items and the pay out is $6.00. Really! NEVER AGAIN will I sell or purchase with Threup
Hi Erin. We're sorry to hear your Clean Out did not go as expected. Our hope is to always manage expectations initially around what you can make with us. We do provide the payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) and display our payout structure (https://bit.ly/2rjNhPx) to allow customers to get a better idea of how much they'll earn. I've been for some unknown reason using ThredUP for years. They give you almost NO money for your clothes. They even called my jcrew jeans "factory store" which they were not and gave me less than. 50 for them. Not to mention their pricing on used clothing is absurd. You can get better prices with sale items in the stores. And lastly, I think they may keep things for themselves. I sent an adorable top from Loft that I wore once. Was still in the season I purchased it and they didn't accept it. I'm sure one of them is running around wearing it. I hate this company. Will never use them again. Wish I could just get my clothes back and donate them to charity. I feel like they are just robbing people. What a sham. DON'T SEND YOUR CLOTHES TO THEM!
Hi Tiffany - thank you for your review. We have sent you a private message to discuss these concerns further.
I'm a huge supporter of Thred Up's mission and the concept of recycling clothing. Sincerely wish I could offer positive feedback BUT please be EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS before choosing to buy from this site.
In less than a year, there have been several incidences where my purchase was suddenly refunded, and listed as "Canceled" under my order history.
No additional information was provided, which leads me to believe there are serious issues with either multiple people purchasing the same item, or poor initial vetting of clothing, which is only caught just prior to the item being shipped.
Twice now I have taken time to browse, select the perfect item for a special occasion, and make my purchaseonly to learn 4-5 days later that the item is somehow unsuitable for sale or unavailable to ship?
Hoping they'll have a valid explanation, or I will start looking at other local vendors.
Hi Jaclyn - thank you for your review. It appears you've been in contact with a member of our support team via email and the app regarding these orders.
This company is awful! They charge return shipping fees of $8.99, in addition to restocking fees of $1.99. And if you don't decide (or you are out of town) within 14 days, they will not accept the return. Save yourself the hassle and shop elsewhere.
Hi Carla. Thank you for your review. When placing an order, the $1.99 Restocking Fee is noted on your item's details page prior to checkout. When initiating an order return, the $8.99 return shipping fee is charged if you'd like to have your refund sent back to your method of payment. A return will not have this charge if you select thredUP credits as the refund method.
This is my first time writing a review for anything ( good or bad). My experience has been so awful that I feel the need toward others. I sent a bag full of items, both clothing and shoes of very high-end brands. Two things happened, either I recieved almost no money for the items sold ( under a dollar) or brand new items boxed or tagged never even went up for sale. These people have an incredible scam going on! It will catch up to them.
Hi Jillian. We're sorry your experience did not meet expectations. If you'd like to review the acceptance of your Clean Out bag to find out the items that were accepted for sale, please visit your seller history page: https://www.thredup.com/bags. As a seller, you have the ability to set your own listing prices as items are accepted on consignment.
If you have additional questions about pricing your items, please reach out via email, chat, the app or through social media. Thank you.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
Hi Caroline - thank you for your review and we apologize for any confusion or frustration. We do show you've been in contact with a support representative regarding this matter. Because labels for clean out kits do not have more than 1 label that can be printed at a time, what we believe happened is that you printed out an entirely different label, which was for B2FDG-JXH5Q and this was requested as a donation kit at the time of ordering. Our support representative has followed up with you via email to address this further.
Thank you.
