  • Geni

7/18/08

Geni doesn't protect its users' privacy - it will broadcast your family on Google - I created a family tree on Geni thinking it would be neat to share with my family, but Geni published it online. Now it shows my entire family tree on Google, and there is no way to turn it off or delete it.

Geni is trying to make money off your family information and they do not respect your privacy. Don't let them do it.

  • Hulu

4/21/08

Awesome free site for watching shows and clips from NBC and FOX - This site is f*cking great. You can watch full episodes for free of Arrested Development, SNL, Family Guy, 30 Rock, and tons of other shows and clips. The site is clean, fast and the videos are high quality. There are some ads before shows, but they're not bad.

  • I've Tried That

1/31/10

This site looks like a legit "scam" blog but if you take a closer look it looks to just to be another scam itself. They are trying to make people sign up for their own work at home scam: http://www.ivetriedthat.com/our-top-recommendation-the-wealthy-affiliate/

Don't fall for it.

  • Yahoo Answers

3/27/10

The idea of a Q&A site is great, but I think Yahoo Answers might be misleading millions of people because so many of the answers are just plain wrong and it's impossible to tell!

I used to use the site often when I wanted to look something up, but then I ran across some questions that I knew the answer to, and the answers on Yahoo Answers were wrong. I no longer use Yahoo Answers for anything (it would be like trying to learn history by reading Dan Brown).

  • GolfNow

2/21/10

I mostly agree with Frank. Depending on where you live, GolfNow's discounted tee times are sort of skimpy, and I feel like I get better deals from my local golf association. You can find your local golf association here:

http://www.usga.org/SRGALookup/regional_state_associations.asp

  • Synonym

4/16/08

Crappy site can't even give you synonyms - You would think that a site called synonyms.com would at the very least give you decent synonyms. But no. This site sucks -- I was looking for a synonym for "explorer" -- pretty simple word. What do I get? Nothing. But then I go to http://vancouver-webpages.com/synonyms.html -- some ghetto-$#*! Canadian open source thesaurus and bingo -- 5 synonyms! Sites like synonym.com make me mad because they are the #1 Google search result --come on Google, give me better results!

  • Myspace

10/29/08

Imeem makes you log in to access a very mediocre music site - Sometimes I just want to hear a song that I don't have an MP3 of. So I Google it. I get lots of crap, lyrics, spam, etc. But I usually get a link from Imeem promising free music. So I get all excited and click on it. But what do I get? A pop up window telling me to register. I don't want to register. I just want my song. But just to see if it was any good, one time, I did register. And the site sucks! They don't have that many full legth songs, and I don't see why I would use it over Favtape (the best for listening to music) or Pandora (the best for discovery).

Stay away from Imeem.

  • US Government

10/11/08

US Government's website, actually pretty good - When I think of the US government's website I think of slowly-loading, convoluted pages filled with links to text filled documents and pdf files. And certainly, there is still some of that. But I have to say, when playing with the website the other day, I was pretty impressed. It's easy to use and fast.

Some interesting links on finding a job, also the always-fascinating secret service, and the all-important Federal Government contact us page. All in all, I must say, I like our government's website.

  • Zivity

5/23/08

Good quality artistic (sexy) naked pictures (and I've got some beta invites) - Zivity is a collection of sexy naked and half-naked pictures of attractive women. The picture quality is good, but they are still in beta so there is not a ton of content. The site is trying to mesh web 2.0 style and features with soft-core porn - not sure if that really works (why do I want to be "friends" with these people?) and the site is a little hard to navigate. But it is worth checking out for the pics. I've got some beta invites if people need them - just PM me.

  • Nintendo8

2/2/08

Play sweet old-school Nintendo games in your browser - Sitting at work and got a hankering for some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action? Wait no longer. No need to download anything--you can play these great 8 bit games right in your browser. Booyah.

  • Nudyclips

12/3/07

Great naked celeb video site - The videos are all ranked by popularity and tagged by actress and movie. The site is clean (no ads, spyware, pop ups, etc) and has a lot of good content. Also, the videos load quickly. Great free celeb site. Here's the main index:

  • UrbanDictionary

2/21/10

Got to credit LilRebel for inspiring me to review this, but man I love Urban Dictionary. When I was 12 I would have loved nothing more than looking up dirty slang words to impress my friends. Who I am kidding, I still do, which is why I sign up for the Urban Dictionary word of the day. So the next time your a girl wants to "DTR" you'll be prepared http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=DTR&defid=*******

  • The Hype Machine

2/20/08

Good for listening to full length songs without downloading, but hard to find good new music - Hype Machine aggregates music blogs. Maybe I'm not using the site properly. But personally, I find Hype Machine a bit too noisy and hard to separate the good from the bad (blogs and songs) so I don't use it to discover new music. If someone has some tips on how to use the site better, I'd be interested to hear them.

However, I do use Hype Machine to search for specific songs or artists I want to listen to, because you're able to listen to songs in their entirety on the site, which is often better than downloading or using some paid service. It's also possible to find some live tracks which aren't widely available.

  • Aziz Ansari

3/10/10

Aziz Ansari is the funniest comedian I've seen since Dave Chappelle. He's great as the racist food cart owner on Flight of the Concords and in The Human Giant. Here's his blog.

I highly recommend:

  • MIT's Technology Review

2/19/10

If you want to read about the latest developments in science and technology there is no better place online than the MIT Technology Review. Only the nerds of MIT could bring you such an indespensible resource. Please be aware that I say "nerds" with the greatest of admiration.

  • Favtape

9/20/08

Like Muxtape but oh so much better - The crappy thing about Muxtape was it was impossible to find anything. And then it got shut down:(

Favtape is sweet. You can listen to full length songs, and you can browse around and find sh*t. BOOM!

I hope it doesn't get shut down too!

  • The Ivy Plus Society

8/8/08

If you can put up with the snotty ivy leaguers... - Ivy Plus hosts decent singles mixers in LA and San Francisco. Sure there are lots of douche bag guys, but not everyone is bad, and it's a good way to meet new people.

  • Facebook

6/12/08

Facebook good for posting cheap job listings (if you belong to the right networks) - If you want to post jobs online, you could use LinkedIn, Craigslist, Monster, and any number of more specialized job boards. They typically cost $75 and up if they are any good. On Facebook, however, you can spam your networks (school, city, etc.) basically for free.

  • GoDaddy

6/9/08

Don't use the domain buying service - I wanted to buy a domain that someone else owned, so I sucked it up and paid GoDaddy $60 to negotiate a purchase. Firstly, using the domain buying service is really tricky. They send you to some other website where you have to get a new log in (can't use your normal GoDaddy one), and it's impossible to navigate. GoDaddy also tried to sell you like 100 other products in the process.

So I finally get the process going - GoDaddy then "appraises" the domain you're trying to buy (it seems arbitrary, but they say it's based on the length, popularity, etc.) and then you decide how much you want to offer and then GoDaddy is supposed to contact the website owner and negotiate the purchase.

I took GoDaddy's advice and had them offer the website owner the appraisal amount. But then GoDaddy spent and entire month trying to contact the website owner and NOTHING. No response. $60 completely wasted.

The worst part is, I decided I would try to email the website owner myself. Sure enough the guy gets right back to me and said he thought the GoDaddy offer was just SPAM. So I would advise anyone considering the GoDaddy domain buying service to avoid using it. And if you must, it's probably worth trying to contact the website yourself before wasting your money with GoDaddy.

Jeremy Grantham provides thoughful commentary on markets - GMO is Jeremy Grantham's $152 billion asset management vehicle. While the fund has had mixed results in recent years https :// www.gmo. Com/America/CMSAttachmentDownload. Aspx? Target=JUBRxi51IID4jPJK9qdDlbdL2Y3GnEUlc9EtDr5X83kpvYKRBXl08KSXamjFWDrbKh2MtHAAE%2bM%2btDnAZlU8q2BB7p86ep%2fC, Grantham has earned the reputation of one of the world's top money managers. He has also been credited with starting the trend of timber investing that has provided billions in high uncorrelated returns for the Harvard and Yale Endowments, among others.

Recently, Grantham predicted the market's decline (although he had been saying it for years and by his own admission didn't really make much money off of it) and usually has thoughtful opions on the state of markets and the economy. You can read his letters and articles for free here:
