ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Give your clothes to charity instead. Its not worth it. I sent 54 items half brand new and I was offered $31 in return! Do not waste your time!
They are are horrible to work with. I order something at the beginning of October. I put in my shipping address (the only one that theybwould accept) and i put expedited shipping. Well, 3 weeks go by still no package, and the tracking number was NO help, i sent an email. I then called fedex and they sent it back to them, due to a shipping error. So... WHAT THE HELL! I found a number for thredup was never contacted back, their customer service lady Steph (over email) is super unhelpful and will NOT answer any questions. I still have NOT, I am say again i still have NOT BEEN refunded my money. It is a shady $#*! company. I have been told by FedEx several times that they have the package and they signed back for it. During my emails they say that they have NOT received any package back. They are ridiculous. If I could give negatives I totally would. It has almost been a mointh since I ordered. I paid for expedited shipping. Still no goddamn package. They are worthless
Hi Brittany, we're so sorry for this frustrating experience. Please re-send your email to support@thredup.com and we'll be sure it is escalated to a customer service supervisor who will be able to assist you further. Thank you.
I gave this service a try despite seeing some negative reviews and boy am I sorry! I sent in a big bag of name brand winter items as they said this is what they were wanting. I sent in Ann Taylor, Seventh Avenue, INC, and Main and Monroe Sweaters with a pair of Bronx cowboy boots and 2 other pairs of boots along with an authenic Coach bag and Vera Bradley bag all in excellent condition. My reasoning was surely if nothing else I will get a little more for my boots and bags. It took a month to receive notificatoon of what they accepted and all they "say" they accepted were 4 poncho sweaters totaling a whopping $14.90 for them for me! So my boots and bags are "let them tell it" going to charity! In my opinion they keep your higher dollar items and the pay you a measley price for whatever decent lower priced items you send in so they don't have to pay you! My advice is to go ahead and try to sell your own items because this is a big rip off!
I rarely (if ever) write negative reviews but this is worth my time, if I can save someone else any grief. I'm with the others on here... gave them two try's & got taken advantage of even worse the second time than the first. Designer clothing, exactly what they said they were "in need" of, with tags, & got absolutely nothing. My total for last years, still VERY fashionable clothing was an estimated $300+ & in the end, I was seriously given $13.46 and then the $9.99 bag fee came out of that! I waited two months & was expecting at least a $100 credit to shop with, as I have been lucky to find a few cool things on their site. I was in such shock, I told them to keep their f'ing $3 bucks & shove it. So done. They truly don't deserve the one star I'm giving them to write this review. Seriously guys, please learn from our mistakes & sell or donate privately to your local businesses/shelters, whatever. County agencies are always looking for good interview clothes for their clients & the coats that I just donated are getting used by a family that lost their home in a fire recently. If you're going to lose any $$ you have in these items, please make it count, because it definitely is NOT with this company!
Hi Jenn, we are truly sorry to see how upset you are. That is the last thing we want to have happen when someone uses our clean out service. We strive to provide an easy and convenient way to clean out your closets and make great clothes affordable. We do our best to provide as much information upfront as possible to set the right expectations, and it sound like that wasn't the case here. We would love to chat with you, explain more about our process, and hear your feedback. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com. We hope to hear from you!
Sent a huge bag of nice clothes got $3. Rip off city! It would be better to sell locally or have a garage sale. I even saw some of my items on the site they were selling for 8-10 dollars a piece and I got zip!
Stop sending your quality items to them so they will go out of business. I donated a name brand London Fog coat trench coat purchased for $100 and gently used. Given $2.85. Not twenty dollars but two dollars. I would have donated to the local charity if I had known.
Hi Liz, we're so sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your payout. We'd like to look into this further. Would you mind dropping us an email to support@thredup.com with your bag info? Thank you!
They wrote and told me that it would take until Sept to review the bag I sent the bag in early August. They have not answered several of my emails. They have not paid anything and they did not ever answer my emails asking about my payment.
Oh no! We're so sorry if you have not received a reply. We promise we reply to each and every message we receive. Please resend your email to support@thredup.com (you should receive an automated confirmation email to let you know it was properly received) and we'll be happy to check on the status of your bag. Thank you!
Sent 35 items with price tags still on. Ann Taylor, Anthropology, Lucky, etc. They have not paid the $16
Credit payment which is only to be used to purchase one item from them! Id rather donate to a charity than give
This scammer any more.
Hi Tori, we hate to hear that you were disappointed with your clean out experience. It sounds like you sent some lovely items. We'd love to review the details of your bag, and check on the status of your payout. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com. We hope to hear from you!
Great if you want to buy used clothes. BAD of you want to sell. While I understand they can not buy everything you want to sell I sent in high quality items and received $10 for what they took. I paid for return assurance leaving me with no profit. I can estimate what they took and will sell will make them well over $100. They scam people to sell to them, DONT DO IT! Most of the high reviews are from sponsors. F
Hi Nicole, we're so sorry to hear that your clean out experience did not turn out as expected. We know that doesn't feel good. We'd love to walk you through the details of your bag, and explain more about the reasoning behind our pricing and payouts. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com. We hope to hear from you!
Seriously, sent in a bag that was STOCKED, I mean FILLED with clothes; I am talking 20+ sweaters, some jeans, 4 dresses, etc. I went through every piece thoroughly, making sure it was clean and no imperfections. I used the calculator on their site; they accepted all the brands I had, etc. I even had some NEW WITH TAGS. They just sent me an email saying they couldn't accept ANYTHING I had. I am absolutely FURIOUS.
I sent in an entire bag of mostly unworn clothes, name brand shoes, and handbags... only to get 5 dollars. Furthermore, they were way late in processing my returned bag. 10/10 would reccomend to someone I hate.
Found a designer wool coat, in excellent shape, priced well, for $50. Order went through, confirmed, was charged the money. Checked my order today, coat mysteriously disappeared from my order (of a couple items) and credited. No notice was given me. I found this out online by myself. IM'd the customer service, "before packing we double check the quality, it says it had flaws."? Hmmm. I asked 'what were the flaws and why wasn't I notified to still keep my purchase? The online description described it as brand new.' I know TU selsl 'slightly used' clothing with 'minor flaws' at other times. Customer Representative said, 'It doesn't say.' Oh - so it seems the person packing it thought they would keep it for themselves, list it as flawed, and credit my account. This has happened to me twice. Sending all of the other clothes back from the order once they arrive - seemingly poor integrity to their system. It just is too coincidental that is was a great find, in season, for a great price. My purchase never arrived.
The prices that they post as the original price is not true. They take the tag with the MSRP price and list it is that being the "original" price when everyone knows no matter where you go that the actual tag that was sent with the clothes with the overpriced price tag is not the actual price hanging on the rack at the store but they listed as such on thredup. Anyone who does as much shopping as I do and see that this website is a scam and is not truthful with the clothing and what they're worth. I bought a dress from Target about 12 years ago on clearance for $4 and I saw the exact same dress just now on this website for sale for almost $7. This website is a scam... I can get brand new clothing at TJ Maxx or Marshalls for way cheaper... this website is pure crap... and a lot of the clothes on this website are very old and being sold for way more than what they're actually worth.
I sent in two FULL bags of never or rarely worn children's clothing, all top brands, some with tags. All items clean, no stains, rips, loose buttons, etc. All items they said they needed, sent at the start of the fall season. They took four items from the first bag, which was less than their charge for receiving bags, so I got $0. They took four items from the second bag (none of the perfect-quality winter coats, but two hats...) and announced they'd changed their policy and I could not actually cash out the whole $3 they were offering. I'll have to wait til the items sell. I don't mind that policy - I mind them changing these policies regularly. As another example, when I sent in both bags, sending bags was free; by the time they opened them, they charged me for one but not the other. I don't mind them choosing not to take my items, but they must be far more clear about what they tale so that I don't send things they don't want. These were the quality, brand and type they said they wanted. All I can guess is that in the eight weeks it took for them to open my bag, they had enough of those items and no longer needed mine. Fine, but in that case they ought to offer to send them back. They also should not change policies mid-stream. I am very disappointed and will not use them anymore.
Sent a HUGE bag of gently worn or brand new name brand clothes like Free People & Lucky Brand. Could have made a few hundred off of ebay but thought it would be easier if someone esle sold it for me. The gave me $30. They ripped me off so bad!
I sent in a completely full bag of name brand clothing, belts, purses, all gently used, and recieved ZERO payment from thredUP. Nothing was damaged in any way and was very well taken care of sweaters, blouses, pants, etc from jcrew, banana republic, loft, nordstrom, belk. This was a complete waste for me and I could have sold my items elsewhere. Do not use this company, a complete scam.
I sent in one large bag and was only paid $18. All my items were new with tags or in excellent condition and Thred Up listed them all as such. They made way more on my items than I was paid for them. They ripped me off. I would have been better of selling my items on Ebay. Thieves. Thieves. Thieves. I will never do business with them again, selling to them or buying from them. I would be purchasing items that I'm sure they ripped off from other angry sellers as well.
Do not send your clothes to thredUP to sell. I sent 2 large bags of new and gently used items. All were current fashions, no stains, snags, tears, etc. No broken zippers or loose or missing buttons.
The estimated time to process was 3 weeks. It took closer to 8 weeks. Fortunately, they waived the $9.99 per bag processing fee. They estimated the value of the contents (70-80 items) to be $26.55. If the hadn't waived the processing fees, my payout would have been less than $7.00 for 70-80 items!
The two options for payout are credit with thredUP. Since several of the items I have purchased in the past were either the wrong size or damaged, I decided to cash out. They sent a pre-paid gift card. After having the card declined multiple times, I went online to the cardholder's website and learned that I can only process purchases for 80% of the value of the card. The instructions for processing for the amount on the card do not work. Ripped off in several ways.
People like this should not be aloud to get away with ripping off the public.
Total false advertising, terrible service, Class action suit should be made against them and close down their rip off dealings!
After sending a few bags for donation and a few for pay out, I realized how untrustworthy this company is. I am extremely aware of quality standards as a designer myself, and therefore I only send sellable items in the pay out bags, and less sellable items in the donation bags. The most recent bag I sent was worth HUNDREDS of dollars, and though I knew I would get less than I paid for these items, I did not expect to get less than $40 total! I cannot emphasize how insanely small that amount is in regards to what I sent. Additionally, items that were in excellent condition from stores like Express and Vineyard Vines, were not accepted. The company also does not tell you why your items are unaccepted, and I wouldn't be surprise if they are still somehow making money off of these items. I have no doubt that this company will start to have trouble when people get fed up with the payout they receive and no longer have things to sell. At the end of the day, if you want to donate items and do not care to get anything in return, they'll make it easy for that, but if you're selling your clothes because you need money, don't expect this company to do anything to help you.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
Hi Sarah, we're sorry to hear you feel that way. We truly believe thredUP is the easiest and most convenient way to clean out your closet. While we always support donating to charities, thredUP is a great option if you'd like to make a little cash without the work of selling the items yourself. You don't even have to leave your house once the bag is full. Talk about convenience!
