ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I sent in a number of clothes items ALL new with tags, never worn: Ralph Lauren, Mini Boden, Tom's, etc. They gave me $13. Less than $2 an item. Would have preferred to donate to a local charity. This organization is disgusting. Don't fall for it!
I've sent in a huge bag with a few items that still had tags on and got a $12.10 payout! This is pathetic. It took them over 2 months to process my bag. DO NOT send in anything that you think might worth some money. Their payout is pretty much 30 cents a piece! I'll donate to Salvation Army to the needy and NOT the greedy next time. Hope they close down soon!
Sent a HUGE bag of clothes in perfect condition and received 21.75. It was laughable. I won't do that again. I definitely won't be selling to them or recommending them in the future. Sorry ThredUp, you're payout is a joke. Next time, I'll donate my items to charity.
I wish I would have done more research before sending anything to ThredUp. I sent around 30 items too them all designer labels excellent condition and a few never wore. They accepted all that I sent and most have already sold. I was given 18 dollars. I will never do business with them again nor would I ever recommend them. Next time I will donate in my area and write off on my taxes.
I have no idea how this is a legitimate business. I sent them a huge bag of clothes, mostly never worn or worn once or twice from places like Arden B, Reiss, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, and they took 20 items and gave me... wait for it... $12.90 TOTAL for that. I could have sold every one of those items ($800+ worth of clothing) for $1 each at a yard sale and made almost double what they are paying me. In addition, their customer service representative convinced me to get the $10.99 for guarantee return of items they didn't take and so, yup, I'm getting a total of $1.90 for 20 items of clothes. I'm beyond ENRAGED. I will never ever ever use this site again. And you shouldn't either.
I sent 1 bag of clothes, they sold 7 items including a london fog raincoat which they sold for 36.99. I received 14.35 for all the items. I would rather donate to charity never again
Do NOT use this website! Its a scam! I gave them a bag full of brand name items including a new pair of Steve Madden wedges. They took 6 of my items and only gave me $3.84. I am furious. Do not trust these people! I feel like Ive been robbed!
Oh no, we're so sorry you're so upset, Olivia. That's the last thing we want to have happen. Have you reached out to our team at support@thredup.com yet? We can explain more about the details of your bag, including why the Steve Madden wedges did not meet our strict standards. We hope to hear from you!
I had a few shoes with brand name sent along with the clothing. And only a couple skirt were posed( accpted) the shoes were not taken. I got total upfront $1.90 for everything i sent. I dont know who makes the price. But ebay is probably better if you want to sell your old stuff and knowing where the money is going :( I regret sending in all my brand name items thinking i will get good payout.
Hi there, we're sorry to hear we were unable to accept some of the items in your bag. That's never a great feeling. We'd be happy to walk you through the details and explain more about why the items did not meet our strict standards. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com.
I've been using ThredUp for a year now, sending in 9 bags and having 8 completed. Yes, I agree it does not make sense to wait for two weeks for the payout to clear. I think they do this so you will likely buy instead, and the credit is available immediately. It is a business, after all.
As for what they have accepted, I've only had a few items that were in great shape and new (within the past year) that they did not accept and it surprised me. Even a couple of items with tags. Do they have staff that take some of the items? I don't know. Where else do the items go to be sold? I wish I knew. Where are the items "responsibly donated"? Please tell us.
Overall, I feel I've been compensated fairly well. When I go to my local consignment stores they give me crap, take nothing, and then all their stuff looks like it's from the 70s... so I prefer ThredUp as I feel more fairly treated.
What do you expect when you try selling used clothing? Even with tags, we all know it was not just purchased.
As for shopping, I've had extremely good luck in finding items I love at great prices, pieces in wonderful condition. They are truthful about the condition for sure.
I've earned nearly $400 so far in a year.
At first I was asking for my stuff back but now why bother, since I donate anyway. So I can save even more.
You know they do prefer certain brands, such as Loft, Ann Taylor, The Limited, Lord and Taylor, Gap. And these are the majority of brands I have, so perhaps that is why I've had better luck than some.
They now have a special thing where people can send in designer, haute couture stuff, which I do not own.
So try them. I think they are decent and I like their mission statement.
I sent Thredup 15 items, many which were NEW with TAGS. Many of the items I sent were dressy dresses made by brand names, some with tags of $200 and up. I received $55.91 for them as an "upfront" payout. Who is making all the money here?
I will never send my nice things or anything for that matter to them. They must sit back laughing at how much they pay out. I would love to know how much THEY made on my items. Also, I sent a blouse with a sash belt. They lost the sash and I know it was in the bag.
Hi Karen, we hate to hear that you were disappointed with your clean out experience. $55 is usually considered a great payout on thredUP. Since we take care of all of the hard work for you - no hauling the items across town, waiting in line, or dealing with rejected items, you do earn a little bit less than if you were to sell them yourself. If you'd like to chat through the hows and whys of our service, we'd love to hear from you. Shoot us an email to support@thredup.com.
It appears I successfully DOnated my items to thredup! After carefully choosing thru my and my daughters items all the best, no stains, no tears. I even washed and ironed. Sent in 3 overstuffed bags which thredup choose randomly items that were not even the best of what I sent in. It seems they choose 11 items with around a 7 return to me? Now I most every year donate my items and feel really good about that. This year after a couple operations and time off of work I start shopping online here looking to get back in the work force and wanting to save money and look good. I felt since Im on a tight budget what Can I do to buy clothes and stay in my budget... so I send in my items to thredup. All Im left from this experience is how can a company feel good about their business practices while handling business like they are! Please if you read this just Donate your clothing locally, youll feel much more satisfaction.
Does anyone actually know where our items go they dont pick?
Hi Jacquelyn, we're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your thredUP experience. If a seller does not want the unaccepted items returned, we're happy to recycle them appropriately. This means that items in reusable condition (but do not meet our strict standards) find new homes, and items that aren't in as great of shape are recycled into new materials like pillow stuffing and carpeting. We'd be happy answer any questions you may have about our processes, and walk you through the details of your bags. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com.
I sent ThredUp a HUGE bag full of designer clothes that I maybe wore once if that. Some stuff still had the tags on! I received absolutely NO money back! Do not send them anything! They are a scam and I'm so mad I fell for it!
Hi Robyn, we're so sorry to hear how upset you are. We'd like to look into the details of your bag and see how we can help. Please email our team at support@thredup.com. Thank you!
After reading all the super negative reviews I wondered if I'd made a mistake sending a bag to thredUP, I just got my "clean out bag's been processed email" and they gave me about $14 for the stuff they took immediately and a possble $24 for the stuff on consignment. Now could I potentially made a lot more money on eBay? Yes, of course. But this was so painless. No picture taking, description writing, ironing, shipping, yada yada yada. I'll most likely request another bag. With immediate accept and consignment they took a total of 14 items. Can't remember exactly how many items I sent, but of the four they didn't accept that I can remember, three of those were kind of iffy in my mind already. Was surprised they didn't accept my barely, barely worn Kate Spade Saturday blouse.
Hi Amy, thank you for sharing your thredUP experience. We'd be happy to walk you through the details of your bag, including the Kate Spade Saturday blouse. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com. We look forward to chatting with you!
We sent a bag that was about halfway full - we had a variety of items in it (shoes, bags, clothing). We waited almost 2 months to hear back, and when they did, they took 14 items and we were paid a little over $15... then they turn around and sell it for significantly more than they paid us. We did the math and were only earning 9.4% of what theyre selling it for. They also claim they took 41% of our items which they did not. We did not send over 30 items. Do not do this! Try poshmark, mercari, Platos closet, literally anywhere else. You also have to pay to get your money which is insane because we made so little. We understand they have a business to run, thats fine but Wed be surprised if anyone did thread up more than once.
Hi Meredith, we're sorry to hear you feel that way. We truly believe thredUP is the easiest and most convenient way to clean out your closets. We have thousands of repeat sellers that are happy to get unwanted items out of their closets without the hassles of selling the items themselves, or hauling them across town to wait in line at a local shop.
We keep a detailed list of all items received, including those we are unable to accept. We'd be happy to review the details with you. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com. We hope to hear from you!
I thought I would try this out, it looks like a good way to make some money. However I sent a huge bag of about 15 items, name brands in great condition. Waited over two months to get my bag processed, and only received $5. To add insult to injury, I was then told I have to wait two weeks to cash out my money. I couldve made more than that at a garage sale for 50 cents each. I was also given notice 2 days later that one of my items already sold, Im sure at 10 times more than the price they gave me. I am absolutely not happy with the service, and will not do it again.
Hi Lisa, we hate to hear that you were disappointed with your clean out experience. We understand it can be frustrating when expectations and what actually happen turn out to be different. We try our best to manage expectations with tools like our payout estimator and payout chart. Were you able to find these helpful before sending your bag? We'd love to hear your feedback, and any suggestions you may have on how we can better provide this info in the future. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com.
This company is a ripoff! I got $7 for a brand new tunic/never worn with tags, that I paid close to $100. Don't waste your time. Their juvenile punks. Sell your things to a company local to you b/c they'll be responsible and reliable unlike ThredUp.
Hi Maura, we're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your payout. It's true, your payout won't be what you originally paid for the item. Clothing decreases in value fairly quickly, even if the tags are still attached.
We list items in our shop at up to 90% off the retail price. We then pay you, the sender, 5-80% of our thredUP price, depending on how much we can sell it for. The higher the resale price, the more we can offer after all of the shipping and overhead costs are paid. For example, if we listed the tunic at 70% off the original price of $100, it would be priced in our shop at $30. According to our payout chart (https://support.thredup.com/hc/en-us/articles/203415056-How-much-will-I-earn-for-my-clothing-) items with a resale price of $35 earn 25%. The payout for the tunic would be $7.50.
We try our best to set the right expectations about our service with tools like the payout chart above and our pricing estimator here -https://www.thredup.com/p/cleanout-payout-estimator We'd love to hear your feedback on if you found these tools helpful, and what more you'd like to see included. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com.
I sent a bag of clothes and earned 5% of its value to Thredup. To give you an idea of that that means: they will sell my clothes for $98.20 and I earned $4.91. Definitely not worth it. Next time I'll donate them around here and let a charity make the money.
Hi Kristine, we're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your clean out experience. We do our best to set the right expectations surrounding how payouts and how much you can expect to earn with tools like our pricing estimator - https://www.thredup.com/p/cleanout-payout-estimator and percentage chart - http://support.thredup.com/hc/en-us/articles/203415056-How-much-will-I-earn-for-my-clothing- If you have any questions or concerns that we can help answer, shoot us an email to support@thredup.com. I've sent new items with tags that were only a season or two old and never received any credit for it ( Brands like: Frye, J brand jeans, Nike, Sweaty Betty, Lululemon, Tibi and others). In fact, given the value of the bag I was floored when I saw that only 3 pieces were posted and the rest I was given an upfront payout of $4.00! The BBB should investigate this company! I would have rather just donated to the goodwill! Clearly my clothing was kept for profit but they are walking the margins of credible and compliant business practices. Just enough to say they are fulfilling their terms but still just a rubbish company. Will NEVER deal with them again! Would rather donate to reputable charities and receive nothing than to this place!
Hi Susana, we hate to hear how upset you are. It sounds like you sent in some lovely items. We understand how disappointing it can be when we're unable to accept the items from a bag. We'd love to chat with you, and clear up any concerns. We can also provide a full list of the items we were unable to accept with the reason for each. We hope to hear from you at support@thredup.com.
I regret not reading the already written reviews. I sent over two dozen items. Only twelve items listed. 8 items sold and no payout. One third of the merchandise was new with tags. I will never send them any items to sell. I should have just donated the items.
Hi Caridad, we're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your clean out experience. We'd be happy to walk you through the details of your bag, including the items we were unable to accept and why they did not meet our strict standards. Drop us a line to support@thredup.com.
I gave them a chance with 3 bags of good quality merchandise of which I saw little profit. It is better to find a consignment or second hand store. Will not be using them again.
Oh no! We're sorry to hear you feel that way, Diane. Have you reached out to our team at support@thredup.com yet? We'd be happy to explain more about the details of your bags including the items we were unable to accept.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
Hi Linda, we're sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your clean out experience. We would love to chat with you and explain more about the reasoning behind our pricing and payouts. Did you know that we also offer the option to send in a bag for donation to a charity of your choice? We want to make cleaning out as easy and convenient as possible for families across the country.
