ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I sent a bag full of almost brand new, name brand clothes. I got less that a dollar, because they supposedly only accepted one item. It must be complete coincidence that I saw several items that looked exactly the same in the same size on their website.
So that left me with the options of having to pay to have them send the remainder of my clothes back, or accepting 70¢ for the bag full of stuff I sent in.
And of course they have completely non-responsive customer service.
Took several of my name brand barely worn clothes and gave me NOTHING for them. This is a waste of your time. You're better off going to a local store to sell or selling online on your own. This place is a joke!
Hi Tonya. We'd be happy to review your payout history for accuracy. We have sent you a private message.
I have yet to figure out a way to "talk" with someone at threadUP. I sent in a clean-out bag weeks ago and still can't tell if they have processed it. And can't find a way to reach someone 'live'. Their "Live Chat" takes you to their Q&A section... not an on-line chat like everyone else offers... not impressed at all with their service.
Hi Mary. We'd be happy to track your Clean Out bag. We sent you a private message.
I've bought from them several times, but service seems to be going downhill. I don't know if they are growing too fast or what, but I will not be buying from them again. I bought a shirt that was listed as a size M but was actually a size S.
A separate time, I ordered a Goody Box, where they send you an assortment based on your preferences. 1. It took forever for the box to arrive. 2. The things they sent me were off-season and ugly - it seemed to me like they use Goody Box as a way to get rid of all their crappy inventory that no one wants, before they reduce it for clearance. 3. They claimed to have sent me something that was not physically in the box I received. I contacted them about this discrepancy before returning the items I was not going to keep, so around the 2nd week in April. They ended up charging me for the item. 6-7 weeks later, and I still have no resolution to this issue!
There is no way to contact them other than email, which they don't respond to. Done with this horrible company.
Hi Jessica, we would be happy to make this right. We have sent you a private message.
I wish I would have read these reviews before sending in a huge bag full of name brand, good quality clothes and shoes! They received my bag a month ago with a date to process of 5/24... 6 days ago. I sent an email with no response. Really bummed...
Hi Shannon, we apologize for the delay. Your Clean Out bag is currently being processed. You should receive an email from us soon.
Glad to see so many are checking out my review! Looks like many of the reviews are on the same page. So sorry if you have been hosed prior to reading reviews. I was.
Anyway, if you want to sell on an awesome site, please check out Poshmark.com
I have NEVER had a problem. You don't send them anything, and can keep total control of your inventory. They take 20%, so price your items accordingly. Shipping is easy - just use all USPS shipping products, and Poshmark provides the shipping label for you to print. Buyer pays all shipping costs. Check out the site!
Hi Deb, thank you for your review. We would appreciate the opportunity to review your payout history for accuracy. We have sent you a private message.
I should have read the reviews prior to sending in my perfect items. I sent MANY with tags still on them, and received virtually NOTHING for compensation.
THEN, the only payout method is through Paypal, which Paypal takes a 2% cut, so the payout to you is even less.
Seller beware. I have now encountered TWO websites that pay terrible. This one, as well as TWICE.
Do yourself a favor, consign locally, or DONATE for a tax credit. If you consign locally and don't get anything, you can at least shop there, and if you donate, you can feel really good that your items are going to some place good!
I'm from France and I made an order for about two months ago now (4/13/18) but never receive my dresses... I paid more than 100 dollars so I'm quite worried not to see my order. And if it's lost I would very much like to have my money back, I can't afford to loose money like that. I can't contact through phone because I'm in France and they don't have an email, I can't find anything... I don't understand why there's no service for international request. I'm very disappointed, and I hope someone from the staff will read this message and contact me with my email address.(*******@laposte.net)
Thank you for your attention
Hi Lucie, we apologize that you order hasn't arrived. We see that this order delivery was attempted a couple of times. Please contact your local post office. See the tracking, here >> http://track.solutions.borderlinx.com/?mname=thredup&oref=11720983
SCAM ALERT! I had the same experience after sending in 3 BAGS of high quality designer label women's clothing in excellent condition. It took MONTHS before I was notified that they had accepted maybe 3% of my clothing and then months later I received a Visa Debit card for $16.55! I did not use it for about 6 months and when I verified the amount and then tried to use it that SAME DAY the amount was reduced to only $10.60! The card clearly states "FUNDS DO NOT EXPIRE" and the website states there is no fee however the card does have an 2024 expiration date. Thred up is making some major $$$ with this site... highly recommend to just donate locally. DO NOT USE THIS C0MPANY - IT IS A TOTAL RIP OFF AND A SCAM!
Hi Lisa. Thank you for your review. We take all customer feedback very seriously as we continue to improve our service. We have sent you a private message. We look forward to hearing from you.
They did credit me my money back. I made two purchases from them and was happy with what I received - correct sizes and the clothing was in very good condition. I think I will buy from them again, but not sure about selling my things to them.
They gave me a $10 credit so I decided to try them out. I ordered a pair of shorts size 12, they sent a size 4. I spent around $7.50 total with my credit. I sent back shorts with a note stating I wanted the shorts in the size I ordered. No response after I sent the note and made a phone call with a detailed message. No shorts. I was given a credit of 1.99. However I am out approximately $5.00. Actually I'm out the $7.50 because I will NOT order with them again!
My heart is broken. Since my last review, which was positive, I felt that a train just hit me. I sent in close to 100 pieces of accessories [mainly jewelry]: one better than the other. Many fun brands: Lucky Brand, Chicos, Inc, Macy's, Rachel Roy, Guess, etc and out of that carefully packed bag [each piece of jewelry was in its own little pouch], ThredUP accepted 7-accessories and one pair of jeans. Really? Where in the world is the rest of the bag? Nothing is on consignment. The missing items come in close to 90-items. NOT ONE ITEM was broken or damaged. NOT ONE.
How in the world did they assess that 90-items or so were deemed "unsellable" when TODAY I GO TO THE THREDUP SITE AND SEE ONE NECKLACE AFTER ANOTHER from other sellers either missing a stone or tarnished. And, ThredUp sells it as "excellent condition. You might mistake it for brand new." How did those pieces get accepted and miene not? Tell me, please.
My heart hurts so. I really wanted a positive experience, but I didn't get one.
Mike, if you can be so kind and look into it and maybe come back to me with an incentive to stay, I would appreciate it.
Thank you for your honest review, Nora! If you ever need any additional support or have suggestions to improve our service, we're all ears at support@thredup.com. Thank you!
For over a week I have been trying to get an answer on a lost package. Fed Ex has told me that the package is definitely lost and Thredup needs to make a claim but they will not address the problem. Promises of we will find out for you today and still no response. No way to contact them now, horrible customer service, the chat window is not even available and no response to e-mails. This was a dress for a wedding and I am very upset. I am fed up with thredUP, I have regularly ordered from them but now I am very apprehensive.
Hi Vicki. Thank you for your review. We take all customer feedback very seriously as we continue to improve our service. It appears that a customer service representative has followed up regarding this order. We have sent you a private message to inquire about any additional concerns.
I am so sad to say I am having the same bad experience with Thredup. I sent them a bag full of nice designer clothing, shoes and jewelry and received a little over $3 ($3.05) for everything I sent as the up front payment They have said they will pay more if the other items sell. It looks like as of today, I received about $14 additional dollars. If nothing else sells, I earned only $17. The clothing is in excellent condition because I wore it very little due to gaining weight. Can you imagine sending an entire bag of designer clothing only to get $3.05, with no assurance you will get any more? I agree with some of the comments that you are better off having a garage sale. I used to get better payouts, but things have changed all of a sudden. I will not be sending any more clothing to Thredup. I can do much better at a garage sale or local consignment shop, especially with all the delays in going through your bag.

I believe that Thread Up is a scam. I sent in over 100 items in new condition and received a $33 credit. That is insane. I usually sell my items myself on Poshmark or Mercari but I was overloaded (I buy cheap and resell). I know what my items are worth. I will never ever make this mistake again.

I sent in NEW clothing and designer purses, which all magically disappeared! They gave me $4.39 for a full bag... most items are just GONE! I see the same stuff as mine up or sale for $90. They gave me ZERO! They steal your stuff and there is NO accountability. I understand some items get donated, I'm fine with that... but $300 purses, brand new... GONE! Reprehensible!

Three bags set in. These were all nearly new or had tags on them. First off, it took them almost a month to process my bags. They advertise it as taking weeks.
Second, 2 bags gave yielded me $7.38.
The list of accepted items has changed twice.
A 2 piece outfit (dress & jacket) were listed as separate pieces.
Satin jacket and pants with tags was sent, it didn't make the cut.
It's a scam, plain and simple, don't hey involved. If your want to sell your stuff and get money for it, use poshmark.

Looks like an item I sent is for sale but not on the list of excepted items. How do I know you are being honest about what you keep?

TL; DR they promised to return unaccepted items and they lost them.
I sent in two cleanup kits full of designed clothes in December of 2017. The bags were missing for weeks. They retaliated by locking my account. I emailed them every week for 4-5 weeks and didnt hear anything. When I finally asked about a replacement/claim policy, they mysteriously found them.
They accepted some items but sent back two bags under their return assurance program, which promises to return unaccepted items. When I didn't receive my items, I began emailing them again. At first they ignored me, then told me to file a claim with USPS. I asked them for proof that they purchased insurance (you need to buy insurance to actually file a claim), and they became evasive.
Finally after weeks of back and forth they confessed they had not purchased insurance for my return assurance bag. I was furious. What is the point of return assurance if they dont take action to protect the items? I asked them to replace the items or payout the value so I could replace them. They offered me a measly $50, stating thats what I would. Have received if they had accepted the items. I told them that they gave up the opportunity to put a price on the items the moment they rejected them, and that now they were preventing me from obtaining a fair market resale value elsewhere. I told them no, and they have refused to assist in finding the bag or replacing the items. Theres no accountability all the way up the CEO, who batted this down to the same team that ignored my messages in the first place.

The site is behaving oddly, my cart was missing and I have not been credited for something I returned days ago. (I usually get a store credit hours after the package is scanned at the post office) and I received a necklace (not returnable) that was listed as like new that actually had a broken stone and broken clasp. Attempts to reach customer service have been futile. Is the company going under?

Make sure you look at website and try to find customer service info- not email ( just 8 bogus questions they answer - no phone #, no email address). I ordered, i tried to send back - would not generate mailing label- I had to look online for phone number- I CALLED IT-got one voicemail - I called and left my phone and email- no answer no email- Post office proved it was delivered by THRED UP said they did not get it ( THEY TOLD THE the post office NOT ME-i spent 2 hours on phone to get this info)- my only recourse is to file a claim at post office. IF YOU ORDER AND SEND BACK DO IT SO YOU GET A SIGNATURE AT THE SAN LEANDRO UNIT A ADDRESS AND GOOD LUCK! I will never use, and will tell all who will listen what a terrible site this is. BUYER BEWARE!
I've sold many things through Thred Up, and am continually disappointed by the amount of money I receive versus the amount of money they turn around and sell things for. I got $3.00 for a dress I sent in a "clean out bag," and they turned around and sold it for $30.
While most of things I've bought have been gently used, they are continually of very poor quality and should not have been put up for resale. When I return items, I get store credit instead of a refund, which irks me, because now I have credit at a store I don't want to shop at.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
