thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

The worst ever!
May 9, 2018

Now I am getting extremely irate. The only reason I made a purchase was I still had a credit. I purchased a blouse for $18. It was marked as "almost brand new". I receive it and I try it on and one of the clasps falls off. Then I noticed about 3 stains. Not looking brand new to me. Usually I just return it and say it was damaged. Well I can't return it because I am only allowed 1 free return every 30 days. I contact customer service and they say I can't return because it is passed the 14 days. I tell them they are incorrect. Etc etc. Finally someone responds and says no problem. Return the damaged and soiled top and no restocking fee. WOW. That was easy. So I ship it back and get a message that the top is too damaged to resell. No refund. ThredUP sold it to me damaged and soiled and I do not get my money back? I told them to enlarge the photo from their website and you can see the clasp is already coming apart. Plus the soiled spots. Waiting for someone with any sense to respond and give me a refund. I also trying to return 3 other items and was told on Oct 1st I will be able to return other items. Nope still can't make a return. Karly, I hope you are reading this and can help me out here. This is the worst customer service ever. I can't not get any response about another return. Please help! Carolyn Seppi

They ended up giving me another $50 for the Narciso Rodriguez dress. Glad that they finally addressed my complaint, but it was only after I posted it on a public forum. Customer service was dismissive and unresponsive for over a month until I posted my review.

If you ever have an issue with thredUP's service in the future, just keep that in mind that if you go through the conventional route of trying to contact customer service directly, you will likely be ignored, but a negative Sitejabber, Yelp or Google review will get their attention almost immediately.

Consignors stay away - Thredup is a scam
April 10, 2018
Previous review

I've consigned with similar websites before and never had any major problems, but unfortunately I made the mistake of trying Thredup for the first time recently. I sent a number of unused NWT items that somehow never made the cut (guessing those items were "donated," so they say), but even worse, I consigned a Narciso Rodriguez NWT dress that retailed for $1500 and Thredup mislabeled it as a Barneys New York dress and gave me $50 upfront for it. Yes the dress was purchased from Barneys and the tag was still on it - but it was not a Barneys brand dress. The item sold almost immediately and so there was no opportunity for me to reclaim it or to reject the $50 upfront. When I brought the matter up to Thredup, customer service said they would look into the issue but I never heard back. Then somehow, they took the photos of my dress off of my account page. It wasn't because the item was sold - all of my other sold items are still on my account page. I suspect this was an active attempt to cover up the fact that they mispriced my dress. First and last time I will ever consign with Thredup.

I FINALLY received a response from customer service on day six following my first complaint and again yesterday, day seven, only because I gave a review on this site. I still had not heard from anyone but just tried to put in my order and it did go through. However, it would have been nice if someone would have contacted me to let me know that! It's an improvement but this company still have a lot of problems they need to fix. Although I and many others have complained about sending in quality items that are never placed on the site for sale, I have never received a response to this issue. This plus the horrendous customer service need to be fixed before I will want to continue to do business with them. I hope they get it together.

I've been shopping with this company for a few years and all was great in the beginning and, despite some frustrations with pricing, sizing and shipping problems, customer service was pretty good although it was not easy to figure out how to contact them so each time I swore off I gave it another chance. Adding chat looked like it might help but they keep bankers hours in one time zone only! My issue this time is that I have been unable to check out any items. I tried chat who could not help me and sent an email stating that someone would contact be in 24-48 hours. Really? Well, even that horrendous customer service has not been honored. I received that email on 4/26/18 at 11:56 am est. It is now 4/29/18 3:41 pm est and no response. I posted a scathing complaint on their FB page and zero response. It seems that everyone there works banker hours! Strange way to run a business! There are many reviews about how bad they are with clothes that you want to sell. Although their payouts are pathetic, I have not complained too much about that as they are upfront about that. That may be the only thing they are up front about though. The main issue is that you send in high quality items in new or near perfect condition and they just disappear! If you've ever been robbed to will know how violated you feel and that is how I have felt with the last two bags. I only sent in the last bag because they sent it for "free". But I guess stealing your items is their way of making it up. My advice is to never send in any items that you truly for which you truly wish to make some money which after
All is the point. Otherwise just drop them of for charitable donations. This was a great idea that has been poorly managed. You stop having customer service because you changing that service provider. Seriously? What a crock! Don't waste you time. I just hope I can get back the credit I have there but it's now looking too good at this point since I've read they're not doing too well.

Awful
May 7, 2018

I am VERY disappointed in this whole experience. It took almost 3 weeks from start to finish. It took 14 days to have the order finally shipped. The clothes were not only awful but picked out for someone 5'2" at best, never did I ask for petite. One of the items wasn't even hemmed and who wears pleated pants from 1995? The sizes were all over the place since one pair of pants definitely from the 1990s, another from a few years ago and we know how sizes have changed if you are over the age of 40.The packing was poor and presented like it came from items rejected by Good Will. Waste of time and my never to be seen again $10.

I have been buying my clothes from them for a probably three or more years, and I was hooked from the first purchase.
I love buying second hand, and I have been going to consignments shops for quite a while now. At first I felt a bit apprehensive about buying second hand online, but I figured why not try it. Thred Up has never let me down since. Now all of my clothes come from them. This is the best way to buy second hand clothes!

Give Thred Up credit when its due, especially since this is second hand clothing and they have a high volume of clothing to sort through:

The clothes won't be always perfect, so if you don't like second hand clothes then don't buy second hand. If something isn't what you thought then send it back and try something else. You can return it with free shipping and get full store credit, it is a very easy process to return with them and when you do you can let them know exactly why you returned it. So if something was wrong then they will now know (they are only human). *All that being said, I have never had a problem with things being damaged or not accurate to the condition description.*

They might miss a detail here or there, but I honestly don't see it happen often despite me being on their site all the time. Just make sure you read full description and *look at the pictures closely!* Sometimes it can be hard to see details of the clothes sometimes, so just canvass the item thoroughly.

Marketing scheme
May 3, 2018

I have sold and bought from Thredup and have been continually disappointed. They bought my clothes at an incredibly low price, paying no more than $2 for name brand clothes, some of which were new with tags. They then resold them for more than I paid initially at full price in stores. When purchasing myself, sizing, quality and color of clothes have all been unreliable and the site does not provide full refund, only credit or reduced refund. Their estimated costs to which they compare their own Thredup "discounted" rates are increased to make it appear as if you're saving far more money than you really are, if any.

Buyer beware
May 1, 2018

I have ordered women's and children's clothing 3 times from this site. Each order has resulted in a partial or full return due to inaccurate item descriptions misleading me to purchase. A Gymboree size 7 childs top was described and priced as a dress. It was 14" long! A youth's t-shirt and jeans were described as women's. Holding up the jeans for length, they went mid-thigh. A tunic blouse was described as a dress. A dress described as casual, was really a dress from Gap Holiday season over 10 years ago! They don't make that polyester anymore. The quality control is very poor, as is frankly the common sense. Packaging is cute. It, and Tissue paper is to give you the feeling of getting something special but flies in the face of the company's "commitment" to environmental cause. With a high surcharge for refunds, they get you returning to use up site credit. I would love to use up my credit and be done with this company, but they keep misrepresenting their items and forcing me into this cycle of purchase-return. Repurposing quality clothing is a fantastic idea as it keeps it out of landfills, but there has to be a standard of quality to reasonably meet consumer expectations, and this company does not have it.

PRICES went WAY WAY UP!
February 18, 2021

I used to buy on Thred up about 2-3 times a week. The prices are double and you very rarely can get a deal anymore unless you find that someone on accidentally priced it wrong for that brand. Most everything now is just basically getting the item from past season on sale, however when you buy retail they are brand new and these are used items. I can understand if they are raising their prices to give their sellers more money as a payout but by all the comments from sellers they are not doing that. It is just another company that has turned into greed. Swap.com has done the same thing with their pricing. So disappointing!

Buyer Beware
April 29, 2018

I purchased a paisley Etcetera coat with buttons covered in the same fabric. The coat was described as being in "excellent condition, so good that one might even mistake it for new." Imagine my disappointment when I received a wrinkled coat missing half the buttons. I have yet to receive a response to my calls or emails regarding this matter, but rest assured that I will not be purchasing again from what should be called ThredBare or ThredDown.

Not worth it
April 27, 2018

The prices are good but the clothes are not worth it. I ordered two shirts and two dresses both shirts where streched lit and clearly worn. One of the dresses was pictured as a white lace dress with a light tan lining underneath when I got the dress it was only the white lace overlay with nothing underneath. Also some of the lace was torn leaving wholes throughout the dress. The price you pay for the clothing doesnt even make it worth the return you wouldnt even be getting half of what you paid for it back.

Satisfied with Response
April 24, 2018
Updated review

After my complaint on Sitejabber, Mike M. Responded from Thredup several times to work out a resolution. I received a full refund for the 2 items that were damaged and/or was not the brand listed. He stated that they are transitioning to a new customer service platform, so it seems that is the reason for no response from Thredup directly.

They Don't Respond to Emails
April 22, 2018
Previous review

I purchased an order of 18 items, and they were all listed as like new condition. 2 of them had pulled threads, which means that there is a hole in the fabric. With the photos you can't do a closeup to see the condition. In most cases thread pulls can't be fixed, and the hole will grow larger when washed. I wrote customer service to ask them if I have any recourse, and 4 days later they have not responded. I've never encountered such a slow response from any online retailer.

Still waiting
April 22, 2018
Updated review

So after 3 hours of dealing with Thredup I received email stating my pay out card was mailed on 4/13/18. It is now 4/20/18 and not received. Called company that issued card and no record of card. Tried to call thredup and can not get anybody. They will no longer get any business from me. It has been over a month and still nothing.

Still waiting on pay out
April 20, 2018
Previous review

I have used thredup several times. My payouts were not the best but okay. But I usually got the pre paid card with a few day. April 2 I requested my biggest cash out to date. A week later I contacted thredup and the cashout has not been processed yet. Asked when would be processed and was told they are waiting on the company that issues the pre paid card to process. I then ask could they cancel the card and payout to my paypal account. Was told no. Why is it when they are offering you 10 or 15 dollars they will process payout in 24 hours. But with a large payout it takes 14 days after the intial 14 day wait. That is almost a month wasted.

Rip Off
April 21, 2018

In 2016 I sent in two bags and made about $20. I was fairly satisfied with it, as it was mostly stuff I would have donated anyway.

November 2017, I sent in 2 bags again, except this time they included quite a few NWT pieces. It was all also mostly plus size items, which when you go to their plus size section on the website, there is a pop up banner that leads one to believe they are actively seeking nice plus size pieces.

I chose to pay $10 per bag to expedite (the first 2 bags I sent in took weeks to process and receive payout on). I did this thinking that it would be worth the expense, considering the bags this time had quite a few NWT and nicer items.

WRONG.

Bag 1 - they accepted 20 items, mostly boys clothing. This included a new pair of Lands End kids snow boots. I was paid $15.50 for this bag, minus the $10 to not have to wait 2 months for it to be processed.

Bag 2 - They accepted 28 items. This bag was basically all plus size womens clothing, 15 items were NWT. Dresses, jeans, blouses, etc. $11.80 was paid for this, minus the $10 to expedite. $11.80 for 28 items, more than half of which were NEW WITH TAGS.

Total for 48 items? $7.30. I've had that credit sitting in my account since November, because there's nothing to buy there for that amount where I won't be out any more $$. I would really rather not pay them another dime considering how little the payout was for so much stuff.

I wasn't looking to make a ton of $ off of these bags, but I was expecting enough to at least use the credit to buy SOMETHING.

Note: According to their website, it's now $16 per bag to expedite processing.

First, I have purchased $1000's of dollars of clothing at ThredUP over the past couple years. Purchasing secondhand for environmental and economic reasons is important to me, and allows me to enjoy clothes without a guilty conscience. But there have been recent changes which now make it not environmentally friendly, i. E. shipping multi-item orders in separate packing instead of in one box. The excessive packaging now outweighs the benefit of secondhand clothing. At the same time, the prices have gone way up and the website now experiences major glitches that make shopping way too frustrating. Recently I experienced a technical issue with the website that was keeping me from purchasing and using a credit balance that I have. I contacted "customer service" (I use the phrase loosely). It is now three weeks and multiple emails later and not even an attempt at a resolution. They obviously don't value my business. Now I am requesting that they cash out a credit that I have with them that I'm unable to use (crickets). It seems that they intentionally make it impossible to get customer service. I will never shop them again.

Very disappointing

I sent a bag full of beautiful items, some with tags.
They are giving me $14.31 for them. Many of the items sold the first day they were posted at hundreds of times the prices they paid me. Stick with your neighborhood consignment shop.

I'm glad that the bag was free.
Getting your clothes back (after appraisal) costs money
They're selling my clothes for $20--of which I *would* be making 60 cents, but there's somehow a $1.50 fee. So, I make nothing. They make $20. Interesting deal...

When I first found this website I loved it! I was able to find like new items at low prices, but the more I began to shop with them, the higher the prices seem to go up I started out paying anywhere 6 to 8 bucks for a shirt, now everything is 12 to 15 to 16 dollars. The prices are the almost the same I could find buying new out the retail shops. I don't think I will be shopping with the at the same frequency, the prices are starting to get too overly priced for a thrift store that has outdated and Walmart type clothes.

They give you way less for your really good items than was paid for them and they make more from selling than what they give you. The clothes are incorrectly sized at least for the US. Sometimes their larges are very small and in opposition to what's shown on their sizing chart. The store credit is a joke. I rue the day I thought this was a good thing to try. Please sell your items another way and only buy second hand in person, unless you like throwing your money away! Better to give to a charity yourself and get the donation receipt than to depend on them. Sorry to say!

I feel robbed
April 9, 2018

I have been a ThredUp customer for a few years, and I recently sent in a bag of items for resale. I am appalled by the payment I received for my items. On a large bag of quality items, many of which have already been sold, I received $4. However payout prices are decided, they aret no fair or respectful to customers. I will not be selling or shopping with ThredUp any longer.
