ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I've bought some items and was satisfied. If you are looking to make extra money don't send your things here, you will not make much at all and it will take forever for your items to be processed. If you are looking to just recycle your old clothes responsibly, then go for it. I'm still not sure how I feel about it, it's essentially a good will but online wih the guise of fashion.
There upfront price for clothing you sent in to sell is a rip off. So far they have made 75.00 off of items I sent with more waiting to be sold and the upfront money they are going to send me in 2 weeks is $18.30. If I had known this I would have donated to charity... at least I could have gotten a tax write off. People should start posting their experience with thredUp on social media. I have. They asked what they could do, I told them but they haven't responded. Start posting people.
I sent them a bag full of clothes and jeans, and a guess purse. They said they accepted 3 items, my payout $2! I could have sold that stuff at a garage sale for more than $2! Then just to use my credit I ordered a pair of pants which had higher shipping then the item so that was pointless, when I received the item they were stretched out at the waist and too big for a medium! Sending them back and will just have to lose out on my money.
I sent them a $600 pair of Stuart Weitzman shoes that I wore once for about 3 hours. They said they "donated them to charity" because they were stained. There was not a mark on them. Someone there basically stole a great pair of shoes that I would have preferred to donate to a friend instead!
Should have ZERO STARs
What a bunch of gypsies and thieves. I sent out a bag in the beginning of Sept. 2016, FULL of designer shirts, jeans, and accessories. I received an email stating I'd hear back on or around 10/28/16 about my processed items. I never once heard back, email or otherwise. On 11/5/16, I reach out to the company more or less asking "wtf, wheres my bag?" I receive an email from some amanda who supposedly is/was a CSR, feeding me bull$#*! about how they accepted one pair of jeans... out of over 50 items! Obviously upset, I email corporate asking why this happened. To this day, I have yet to hear back from them. And to top it off, I STILL HAVE NOT HEARD BACK ABOUT MY BAG BEING PROCESSED! Ha, these people are a joke. Idk what they are getting paid for when they apparently don't do any work- I mean seriously, I am the customer so why am I the one doing all of the dirty work and investigating?
Moral is: do not use this site, do not believe a thing they say. They will rob you of your things and never contact you. This is the absolute worst experience I ever encountered. Save your things! Sell them on poshmark or ebay. At least you'll know where your things are and are going to, and you'll get paid!
Do Not Use ThredUp!
I sent a bag of brand new children's clothes. Some still had tags. My payout was $6. Rip off!
What a rip off! Sent New with tag dresses and was paid out 10.95. Also sent other items in excellent shape. Notice their good reviews are from purchases made, NOT from their pay outs! We are furnishing them their stock. No more from me! Wish I could give them -5!
I recently sent a large bag of clothing - all of which was in excellent condition, some which had never been worn or had only been worn a few times. They accepted a total of 12 items and offered me a payout of $15 (before deducting the shipping and handling charge of $8.99). Honestly, the clothes that they did accept were the oldest/worst quality/lowest price point items I sent to them.
I was under the impression that they donated the unaccepted items but, after re-reading their FAQ, I realized they have the right to sell unaccepted items to "third party sellers." Their whole platform is a SCAM and I believe they take high quality items, claim that they can't accept them, and then sell them off to some "third party", so they can keep all of the profits. Wish I had read reviews and really looked at all of the information before sending them anything. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT send them anything!
I could have sold some of my items on eBay and made as much or twice as much from my entire bag. It's such a rip off! My first bag for some reason was never charged the shipping and handling of 9.99 so I thought this was a pretty good deal, although I'm thinking I could have made more on some items but then my second bag got charged the shipping/ handling fee and I received 2 dollars. I will never use thred up again.
I wish I had done research on selling on Thread up. I sent in clothing in new and excellent condition and only received a little over 21.00 dollars for all of it. After they subtracted the ten dollar fee for shipping my items I am left with a little over 11.00 dollars in credit. It really is a complete rip off to those selling items. I wish I had donated the clothing I sent them to a charity. So, I learned. I saw a sweater I sent them for sale and they are selling that one item for more than the 21.00 dollars credit they gave me for all my items. I really like recycling/reselling clothing, but this is not the place to sell. They are taking serious advantage of sellers who only want to earn credit to purchase stuff from their website! I am very disappointed, but will find better websites. They are out there and Thred up does not deserve your items.
I have bought several items from Thredup and have told all my friends,,,, so far so good for me I guess, I would most certainly buy from them again in the future
I have only purchased from this site and have been extremely satisfied with every item. The pieces arrived quickly and packaged perfectly.
I sent a full bag if name brand clothes and some never used. My payout is $5, which I can't cash out because they charge $9.99 for shipping & handling. I should have donated at my local charity. DO NOT SEND YOUR CLOTHES TO THREDUP! I'd give zerp stars if possible.
Don't waste your time! I sent in a bag full. 3 items were name brand dresses with the tags on and several pair of unworn shoes and other gently worn items... they accepted 9 of my items, (3 expensive dresses with tags on keep in mind) and they gave me $5 and some change. This is a joke. ThredUP, you can keep the $5 and shove it up your a**. This is a scam... don't bother wasting the month it takes to get any response.
I sent a bag of clothes in to sell after my sister in law told me she had bought a few things from the site. Everything I sent in was in very good shape, still in style, just simply things that I didn't wear in the past few months that I didn't want to hold on to. I figured that they would take 50% of the things in there and even if they donated the rest that was okay with me. My problem was that when they finally did process my bag (weeks after sending it in), I noticed that they gave me a total of $10 for 6 items, and those items were being sold on the site for $30+. So basically, after their $9.99 shipping fee that they subtract from whatever you do sell (and if your items don't make it to 9.99 they will make your account negative), I made a penny. And now they are making $170 off of my items. This is basically a scam. At least if I would've taken them to Salvation Army or somewhere, I could have gotten a tax receipt. Instead I let a greedy company make money off of them instead. What a waste.
While the selection and pricing for shopping is fine and I've been happy with purchases, I will not be frequenting this site any longer as I'm fairly convinced their buying process is a scam. Customers send in "clean out bags" full of items, which are appraised by their "experts." I'm convinced that the purpose of this appraisal process is to ensure that less of the bag is selected than will make up the shipping costs, so that ThredUp never has to actually pay out.
Case in point--I sent in two bags. Both were name-brand children's clothing in VERY good condition. I carefully selected ONLY name-brand, undamaged, unfaded, good quality clothing. There should not have been many rejects. However... Bag one: most of the bag was taken, and the amount was slightly over the shipping charge. Bag two: MORE clothes in this bag from MORE desirable brands, and FEWER items were taken, resulting in my payout not making up the shipping charge--and then the (miniscule) balance from the previous bag was deducted. We're talking bags full of clothing that one could reasonably expect to make $20-$50 consigning locally making $4-$10 on this site, eaten up by their shipping charges. Note: They also recently raised their shipping charge.
I'm convinced that their "buying" practices are in fact intended only for them to obtain VERY low-cost goods to resell (at significantly inflated prices from what they give their customers--much greater difference than local consigning), as they DO NOT pay out a fair amount on your bag. I wouldn't be surprised if their "experts" were trained to reject enough of a bag to ensure that payouts (and diminished returns for the company) don't happen.
DO NOT sell with this company, and if you don't approve of their practices, don't buy from them, either.
I wish I had googled reviews before I sent in my two bags. The bags contained like new clothing from upscale retail stores and included a $450 Coach Mercer handbag which I had perhaps carried twice. My payout on these items were a bit over $30. I certainly could have sold at least the handbag on Ebay and made CONSIDERABLY more for just the single item. Then it very difficult to contact them or redeem a prepaid Visa card. I even would have considered donating to charity but they only offered a single charity as an option. These people are outright thieves masquerading as an enthusiastic consignment service. I call BS. If I could give them zero stars I would.
I sent in over $500 worth of USA sustainably made brand new shoes and on July 25 they said they processed my bag and I never heard from them since. I kept emailing them for months and in October they get back to me with no information regarding my shoes. Then on Nov 28 I get an email that says my shoes were not in their brand line and that they sent me an email on July 25 asking for the return fee and I did not answer the email so they recycled them. No other explanation at all. Plus their customer service must be over seas as they word things incorrectly. What a scam. More than likely they took the shoes and sent them to China to sell. Do not use this site especially if you have expensive stuff as you will not get much for it or they will pilfer it.
I love Thread up. I try to purchase 2nd hand clothing for most of my clothing purchases. Trying to reduce my carbon footprint but, I love clothes. My kids clothing is a bit more tricky because they wear out clothes faster. I have received 3 orders and all of the clothes were in good condition and exactly as pictured. No holes, stains rips or excessive wear. The colors were slightly off and I only had one item I was not happy with but, it was the fit on me not the piece. I sent in a large bag of clothing and got about $15.00 dollars worth of credit. I would have normally just donated them to a charity so it was nice to have a little bit of credit to buy new to me clothes. So much easier than going to a thrift store if you are searching for a particular item. I am picky about my clothes and the brands I shop so it is helpful to know your sizing for different brands. If you are looking to make money by selling your used clothing I would probably not use Thread up but, If you are looking to get rid of clothes you do not wear or children have outgrown this is a great alternative to just donating them to a thrift store. The customer service is great.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
