ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Look, I love the concept of consigning things because it is great for the environment. However, if you're trying to get money for your clothes, DEFINITELY go to a local consignment shop or sell your stuff online. I gave them a bunch of nice, great condition topshop and zara stuff and got about ten bucks for it. Unreal. I took the same kind of clothes to a consignment shop last year and got ninety bucks. Save your time and money and support local consignment stores instead (or ebay or poshmark or depop).
I sent a ton of name brand stuff including barely worn kids shoes. I should have elected to pay the return amount of $12 to get them back but assumed they'd take Natives, Adidas and Uggs. Well they did not and my stuff is gone forever. Don't worry though the $26 they gave me for the 25 items they did take should be able to buy a new pair of kids shoes... right. STAY AWAY. You're far better off selling on Poshmark or giving them to someone you know who'd use them
Thank you for your review Amy and we're sorry to hear you didn't have a positive experience Cleaning Out with thredUP. While you may be able to earn slightly more selling your items peer-to-peer, thredUP is the easiest way to get rid of unwanted items responsibly. Once you send in your kit, we take care of everything else! We do always advise electing to add Return Assurance to your bag if there are any items you'd hate to part with.
It looks like you've since talked to our customer support team regarding this bag. Please reach out if additional questions or concerns arise. Thank you.
I got an email, stating that my bag was worth $75.86. Then, the link to choose consignment over Cash didn't work. I wrote multiple times, because they give you very little time to respond. So, I chose cash with a Customer service rep, and the amount went DOWN to $63.28.
Today, I received a message that I have a ThredUp CREDIT to buy more clothes, but I want the CASH!
I have zero idea how to communicate with this company. And I just want my money. Other than that? I kind of like them, but they totally ripped me off on the gorgeous clothes I sent.
Hi Anne—we're sorry to hear that there has been some confusion surrounding consignment & cashing out. Here is some info on how to cash out your earnings after the 14-day waiting period: http://bit.ly/2EVHKlM. We would encourage you to reach out to us via thredup.com/contact if you experience any further troubles or have additional questions.
I just received my package and I am quite disappointed. I bought two navy /dark blue pants and I got one black and one blue.
Hi Parv.
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We are sorry you received an item not as described. Our Customer Service has refunded you for the incorrect item #46458126. This will be posted in 3-5 business days. Thank you!
I love my purchases so far, I've ordered many items from their Lululemon and BCBG section and they're great! Unfortunately the shipping is not. I live in Canada and have yet to pay under $30 for shipping on anything more than 5-6 clothing items. That's ridiculous. Until something is done to make this more accessible for Canadians I won't be ordering anymore.
If you are trying to sell something through Thredup, don't! They give you VERRRY low prices. Hardly not worth your time. Just drop it off at GoodWill or sell them through Ebay or Poshmark.
If you are trying to buy something through Thredup. PLEASE READ! Even though they advertise a product as excellent condition, like new, they are not in new condition. It is more like a gamble, because they will charge 8.99 for return shipping fee even when they advertised it wrong. I have purchased products they advertised as NEW CONDITION and have holes from moths, rips, and tears! Even the New with tag had holes. I don't think their quality control staff looks at their merchandise thoroughly. When the items are returned, if you want a refund in the original form of payment, shipping of 8.99 was charged. They WILL NOT refund your shipping fee. If you must buy something from them, BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK. Your purchases will not be guaranteed.
Hi Rachel—thank you for your review. We are sorry to know that your experiences selling & purchasing with thredUP have fallen short. As a part of our Polkadot Promise, we will do everything we can to make things right when items in an order do not match their original description. In confirmed instances like these, returning shipping costs are covered by thredUP. Our processing team always aims to uphold our strict acceptance & quality standards and our support team is happy to assist when things don't go according to plan.
The lack of ability to communicate and quixotic acceptance policies make this a bad place to sell. Has anyone else noticed their items being held day after day in someone's cart? This is my current situation with a Giorgio Armani bag - no way anyone will be able to buy it. I imagine the shopper is hoping for a reduction at some point.
CUSTOMER SERVICE DOES NOT RESPOND!
Hi Maralyn—our support team is available to assist when sellers believe an item is being held for too long in one person's cart. You can expect to hear back by email within 24-48 business hours, but if you prefer to hear back more quickly we do have live chat on our site & in-app messaging in the thredUP app. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are also options.
I had problems with two kits I sent in. One was received and processed just now, I sent it in several items, two got accepted. The thing is the email said 100% of your items got accepted! How is that possible if you only accepted 2 items, a brand new with tags Lucky Brand coat was in my bag!
Kit I sent before was even more strange, they gave me quite a bit of credit, but for clothes I did not recognize at all. They must have mixed up my bag and when I emailed them they said the credit was already sent to Reformation and didn't address it further.
Hi Sophia—thanks for sharing. We apologize for any oversights on our end. It looks like you have recently reached a resolution with our support team regarding this matter. Thank you.
I bought a pair of "Jimmy Choo" heels. They broke the first time I wore them. My very reputable shoe repair man immediately identified them as fakes
Hi Rachel—it appears that our support team is currently working towards a resolution with you over at support@thredup.com. Please know that we take these types of situations seriously & we apologize for the unsatisfactory experience.
My first purchase, a year ago, was worth it, a top I paid about 18.00 for and wore a lot.
Subsequent purchases have been disappointing."Like new" means no apparent damage, NOT like new. An Eileen Fisher top that was non-returnable that was rated like new"has a hole that unravelling on the sleeve. Everything in that order smelled like stale dirty laundry and cigarette smoke.
I love the ideals ThredUp professes, but I wish their ratings of the clothing condition is more accurate and that sellers were better paid.
Thank you for your honest review, Anne. We're sorry to hear about your disappointment. Our processing team always strives to uphold our strict quality & acceptance standards—anytime an item is received not as described our support team will gladly assist in a resolution. Please know that "final sale" items do have more variances which is why they have been deeply discounted. We're always available via thredup.com/contact should you have any further questions or concerns about shopping with thredUP.
I ordered some swimsuits for my baby and what I got was junk. Even the one that was supposed to be "new with tags" was falling apart. Such a waste of money.
Hi Sam—as apart of our Polkadot Promise, if we’ve listed an item incorrectly we will make this right with you and assist with a resolution. Please reach out to our support team via thredup.com/contact if you'd like to explore potential resolutions. Thank you.
I loved most of the clothes I purchased and got them at great prices. However, I don't like that there's a restocking fee for each item that's sent back. I liked being able to try new things and I feel much less likely to order certain items with this new fee.
Hi Chelsea,
We appreciate your feedback. As we apply certain fees to our services, we do have our customers in mind every step of the way.
Returns take forever to reach ThredUP, a message takes forever to get a response, and the request I made was ignored without a response to let me know how it would be handled. Very disappointed. I spend quite a bit each month, and I'm left wondering, why?
Hi Teresa,
Thanks for your message. We can assure you that our Customer Service team works diligently to address every customer concern to the best of their ability. Don't use at all to sell. Sent brand new with & without tags got told only $1.90 was amount for me. 5% on items only accepted 5 they got a lot from those. Rest in their rescue boxes for 10 items at $35-$75 a pop. Saw some on the site being sold that was unaccepted. Awent to cash out only option was bank transfer they would only give me. 50c for the $1.90.So tried it was only option at this point but kept claiming every debit card to routing numbers were invalid. Kept spinning forever then if it went through said invalid debit. Lol tell that to my bank it's what they gave me. Deleted will have relatives delete theirs seller beware. Youtube newer reviews say it all... greedy theives.
Hi Amber,
Thanks for your message. We apologize if our Clean Out program did not meet your expectations. Please be assured that our processors never intentionally reject items from a Clean Out Bag with the intention of selling them through our Rescues shop. If an item is in acceptable condition, we want to list if for sale on our site so we can award credits to our sellers and so we can give our customers more pieces to shop from.
When the site started it was awesome they gave a reasonable amount of money back to you and always had 20% off days. I am not sure what has happened but it's clear someone's gotten greedy. I send in very nice clothes some brand new! They are taking $30 and leaving me with $1.50! Not to mention they take forever to go through your bag, never offer discounts anymore, and have marked up their USED clothing to be more than it was when it was brand new. Sorry Thread Up but you are a huge THUMBS DOWN. Get a reality check, it's used clothes! I can't see this site lasting long with the way it's going they will be belly up in no time. I'd rather donate my clothes for a good cause then give to you greedy people.
Hi Cara,
We apologize if our Clean Out Program did not meet your expectations. Our hope is to always manage expectations initially around what you can make with us. We provide the payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) and display our payout structure (https://bit.ly/2rjNhPx) to allow customers to get a better idea of how much they'll earn.
I wish I did my research before sending in my consignment items which is why I'm warning you guys. Majority of my items were brand new and what I got ($$) for them was an absolute joke! I literally feel like I was completely robbed and there is nothing I can do about it! I'll give you a couple examples. I had a brand new with tags goregous Free People Top and I got $. 60 for it! Another Free People top I got $. 55 for! Brand new Express pants $. 75! Why am I making pennies on my items when they are making $10+++ on each of these items? I may as well given my things away! At least I wouldn't be left feeling robbed!
Hi Lyndsay, thank you for your feedback. We always aim to provide as much information about our Clean Out services as possible so sellers like yourself have realistic expectations around what your selling results will be.
You will get almost nothing for what you send. If you send good items you may wish to pay for return, although it will eat up anything you make. You are probably better off either selling elsewhere or donating.
Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for your message. At thredUP, we aim to be THE most convenient way to pass along your unwanted clothing responsibly. We are all about convenience for our sellers and having them do as little work as possible, which may mean you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer.
I sent in two boxes of items in January, one box With 21 items (Ann taylor wool & skirts, jcrew shirts, banana republic silk tops, Vince camuto wool pants etc) just got processed, and I was offered a whopping payout of $2.20 for 4 accepted items. I wasn't expecting much, but $2.20 Is ridiculous. The weird thing is thredUP accepted the crumiest 4 tops from the box and rejected the new to like new jcrew and Ann taylor and Vince camuto items! I take it that the staff decided they liked the items enough for themselves and therefore rejected' them. This is called stealing thredup! Too bad my second box is already in your possession. But you know what? I have many more nicer items I have been contemplating on selling (new Lilly pulitzer, theory) that I will no longer send in. I learned my lesson. Do NOT send anything of value to thredup. Next time I will just donate. I am thinking thredUP deserves people mailing in physical garbage, that business is garbage. Oh yah thredup, I have taken pictures of my items before I shipped them to you thieves!
Our hope is to always manage expectations initially around what you can make with us. We provide the payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) and display our payout structure (https://bit.ly/2rjNhPx) to allow customers to get a better idea of how much they'll earn.
I sent over 2 boxes of clothes still with tags on them and got back just a little over $6 if I cash out now or a little over $18 when and IF they sell. These clothes were brand new, NEVER worn, and still had tags on them. I should have just donated them to Good Will. I understand they need to make money as a business and it is only second hand, but $6 for BRAND NEW clothes is INSANE! I will NEVER do business with them again. Poshmark is a way better way to go to make a little extra cash on the side.
Thanks for your review. We always aim to provide as much information about our Clean Out services as possible so sellers like yourself have realistic expectations around what your selling results will be. We do provide the payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) and display our payout structure (https://bit.ly/2rjNhPx) to allow customers to get a better idea of how much they'll earn. Please reach out to our support team if you have further questions about your payout and we're happy to assist.
Stay away. They sell your stuff and give you about fifty cents. You are better off selling it your self on Mercari
Hi Theresa. We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review and we're sorry your recent experience had not gone as expected. We do recommend customers review our payout estimator (thredup.com/p/cleanout-payout-estimator) prior to sending in their items to get a better idea of earnings. You're always welcome to contact our support team if you'd like further clarification about the payout.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
