ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I have sold one time and I have to agree with the other reviewers on that... not worth it... I could make more money selling on my own.
I have bought many things but I am worried the quality is going to go down because no one wants to sell to them... I have not found as many things that I like like I did in the beginning which tells me people are catching on to no sell their stuff :( bummer for us who like to buy. Thred up... You need to pay out to keep people interested in buying stuff!
I sent in a full bag with about 60 items - all brand names, near excellent condition. They accepted 12 pieces & I got $28.16. I now have the option to "cash out" - which means they send the money to my PayPal account and have to pay the fees there; or I can use it as a credit towards clothes off the site. I've always had garage sales to sell my old clothes, and consignment stores for my really nice stuff and have always earned $150 +. I'm extremely disappointed.
Not to mention, I sent my bag in September, and it is now November 6th and I just got my cashout balance. I know I sent in a lot of clothes, but that's too long.
NOW for my buying experience from ThredUP. I purchased a dress, and it stated that it was in excellent condition. When I received the dress, the strap was completely off. This was an easy fix - but how annoying when I'm expecting the condition that was listed - and don't try to bull$#*! me that it happened during shipping. There's not a mouse in the box!
Do your research, there are better ways to sell your old clothes.
I love love love Thredup.com! They give me the most money out of any consignment stores and they have super cute barely worn shoes, clothing, purses and accessories! Thank you for everything Thredup! -Ellen D
I sent a bag on Oct 6th containing high end barely worn clothes and shoes... Took over a month to process and was offered a measly $17.00! Return service costs $12.99 so not even worth sending or selling the two garments they did keep... Clearly there stint on GMA was a farce! Total joke... Do not waste your time... You would make more at a yard sale!
What a rip off! Sent in a bag with a brand new $450 jacket, 10 articles of brand name clothing and received an upfront payout of $17.58. They put my jacket up for sale and I was told I would get 40.00 for it! I still have not received my money and it's been a month and a half now. Customer service doesn't call you back until days later and it's a big waste of time anyway. Give your clothes to charity. At least you'll know they are going to a good cause. Pretty sure reading the reviews below Thredup won't be for long
I've ordered 3 sweaters and one faux fur vest and I'm in love. The description of the clothing couldn't have been more accurate and I was extremely impressed with everything! The packaging was so cute and both orders I received at separate times shipped so fast! This is my new favorite site for sure!
I have done a fair amount of selling and buying from ThredUp. My experience is DO NOT sell anything you care about or consider valuable. You will not get much for the things you put in the bag even if they are brand new/designer/great condition. I have bought many things that I am happy with. Usually if I need to make a return or deal with customer service the experience is pleasant. There's something addictive about cleaning out my closet, filling the bag, and using the credit to buy more things on their website!
I sent them a bag with 3 Ralph Lauren clothes ( all new with tags) because I wanted to give them a try. I got an email of how much I earned from this bag, $9.76 for all three items. Each of these items they can sell for $20-30. Even if it sells for a total of $60.00, a $9.76 payout is a bit too low. I would never send any items to them ever again. This is a joke.
I have been selling/buying from thredUp since it's beta times, and I have been really happy with my transactions. Although, as people have said, sometimes your pieces aren't valued for as much as you'd hope, it really depends on what they are looking for at that moment. If an item has a good label, if it isn't currently in fashionable, it won't carry a high price tag for you.
That being said, I have an great luck with both selling and buying. Some items have brought in better return than others, but I love that I can upcycle my clothing, and get discards from others that are exactly what I was looking for. I like to online shop as a general rule, so the ease of this whole process is bliss. I have sent loads of bags and spent hundreds of dollars that I have earned and gotten great pieces, both statement and basic pieces, for myself and my daughter. The children's designer stuff have the best deals for sure.
I will continue to use them and recommend to others! Now if only they would start accepting men's clothing...!
It is really a scam I sent 3 bags full of nice clothing all branded and in good condition they accepted only 15 pieces and gave me something like $26, I was still happy but there are some iteams which really worth more like one of my daughters ROTHCHILD's long pink jacket with fur on neck. Paid $200 for it was in good condition they didn't accept it so thrown away or god knows what they do I am sure they sell further unaccepted lot to different vendors. After that I decided never do business with them.
If you buy from them it feels that you pay store price for used cloths on top of that shipping kills you. My advise to everyone don't shop there.
This company is awful and dishonest. I sent in a huge bag full of accepted brands in perfect condition. Literally 100+ items. I waited over a month for them to process my bag, then they tell me that they've accepted 31 items, and gave me a total payout of $27.40. So an average of $0.88 per item. This may not sound bad, but let me tell you the majority of my items were Ralph Lauren. They resell Ralph Lauren shirts for $21+ on their site. They rip people off and buy high end items for $0.88, and then resell them for $21+. Unbelievable, and unfair. They give no explanation for why they didn't accept 50+ items.
So I write them an email expressing my displeasure, and how unfair I think this is. I ask for my items to be sent back to me. They say to me "sorry, but your items are already thrown away". And type out a list of the 50+ items that they didn't accept, with explanations next to them that are complete lies. They say there are "holes and tears" "staining and discoloration". Complete bull$#*!. I inspected my items extremely thoroughly, and everything was like new. Then they say "sorry your stuff has already been thrown away" and say that I should've signed up for this "seller insurance" that costs money, for them to have my items sent back to me if I don't like their price. I've never even heard of this insurance. How is that fair?!
Then, when I ask to speak to someone in higher management, I get no response.
I lost a TON of money to these people ripping me off. Please, please DO NOT send your items to these people! You will not get a fair price at all. Sell it on eBay.
It took a month before one of the items I sent was accepted. They did sent emails regularly explaining the delay was due to volume, but still. I did keep getting other emails with a discount on a purchase, but they simply had nothing in my size that I was interested in. It's a great idea but it didn't work that well for me.
I love that I can purchase my clothing from thred up especially since a portion will go to our daughter's school. It's also wonderful that I'm able to find clothes for her that we would also find at our favorite store(s) but here at a much lesser price.
The only issue I found was that I had some online coupons from retail me not snd I was trying to use only one but the code was said invalid. I also tried the other coupons with the same results.
Still love thredup and will continue to use it always. *******@gmail. Com
I did sent Ann Taylor formal white shirt, Ann Taylor and united color of Benetton tanks, Sport polo Ralph Lauren full sleeves tee and more branded clothes. After more than a month, I got a reply back that "Unfortunately, we were unable to accept any items from your bag".
Please you are going to waste your time by sending bag full of clothes on this website. It is better to donate the clothes than sending clothes on this website.
Disappointing at best from a longtime eBay seller. Wanted to give it a try but if your goal is to be fairly compensated, skip ThreadUp. According to an Oct. 28th Bloomberg Business article, the only ones being fairly compensated are obviously at the top. Last month ThreadUp raised over $131 MIILLION in funding from Godman Sachs and others. I will stick to eBay, yes it is more "work" but at least they are fair.
This site sucks, especially from the selling end (And I'm never impressed with their Womens clothes selection--maybe ok for kids clothes but the women's clothes are just dated and boring---now I know why--they pay their sellers pennies and randomly price items). All the work to dry clean the clothes, get them ready to sell, bag them up (I wrapped all clothes in tissue paper), etc. etc. Was so not worth it. I didn't read the description of the payout closely enough, so that's on me. BUT they accepted all my items and within 24 hours 5 out of 8 had sold, so I sent in good stuff!
BUT here is what they accepted (all items except three were listed on the website as in "excellent condition"--but the ones that weren't in "excellent condition" sold):
J Crew Jeans $26.99---I mean, throw me a bone--I'd say $40 would be fair
Lush Scarf $7.49 --fairly priced, in my opinion
Coach Leather Wristlet $31.99 (with tag) ---fairly priced, in my opinion
Ann Taylor Loft Pullover Sweater $15.99--eh, I'd go with $24
H&M Casual Dress $10.99--$16
Old Navy Heals $14.99
J Crew Factory Store Blazer $20.99--uh, $45
Kimchi Blue Silk Dress $21.99---fair enough
Zara Khakis--$17.49---$25
ANYHOW, my payout was $33.00. I mean I wasn't expecting a huge amount, but that's about $4 an item. $4!
My next round of clothes I was going to ship was a Lululemon coat I wore like twice, and a bunch of sweaters and Anthropologie coats I took to the dry cleaner to get cleaned before I sent them off. But forget it, if I'll only get $4.00. That won't even cover the dry cleaning bill.:(
If they paid their sellers a little better, maybe they'd have a better selection. There is no way this business is going to last.
Oh BTW, there's a Kate Spade "clutch" that is actual a pencil case I got for $40, and they listed it at $72.00.
So, after having my unaccepted orders sent back ($12.99), and my dry cleaning bill, I'm in the hole about $30.
SENT 2 BAGS FULL OF CLOTHES / NEW CLOTHES... THEY PAID ME $ 0,26 FOR THE CLOTHES. TOTAL 6 DLS... SENT BRAND NEW SHIRTS WITH TAGS... LOST MORE THAN 10O DLS WITH THEM... BE AWARE W/ THIS COMPANY... FRAUD...
I was initially very excited to purchase items from Thredup. I then sold brand new items to them and was given a profit of $8.70 for a bag of brand name new expensive items. Do not waste your time and money selling to them.
I've never purchased from thredUP but received an email stating 40% off my first order. So I found a purse, proceeded to check out and entered the discount code. A message popped up stating someone else had already used the code. Nice. Clearly this outfit isn't in it for the long term. Future emails will be taking the fast track to the junk file.
I sent a huge bag of brand new, brand named items to this company. Before sending in 5or 6 pairs of jeans I checked the website and saw that identical pairs were selling for $15. Each. The company only credited me $3.25 for my whole bag! Sell your clothes on ebay or bring them to a consignment shop.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
