ModCloth is great when you first discover it. They have a huge selection of clothing and accessories and almost everything looks really cute.

Then you start ordering. I'm basing my review on MULTIPLE transactions and not just one purchase. It's important to really look at images online to get an idea of what fabric is like. Colors online are often misleading and very different in person. Most of the items are quite overpriced, especially when the item arrives and the fabric is disappointingly cheap. I have no problem paying more for a dress if the quality is better.

I've also been burned in the sense that after ordering an item, I did some research into the brand and was able to discover it cheaper at another retailer. Since then, I've always tried to find an item I want cheaper at another site and most of the time I do. (Sometimes the mark-up can be as much as $20).

It's not all bad though. I've gotten a few dresses that I was very happy with, but they were all pretty pricey. There's pretty much no one website where you can find this great selection of vintage and vintage-inspired styles. I think the great thing about Mod is that they have things for many price-points.

As another side note, I ordered many items with the free "savvy saver" shipping and shipping took about a week. I then ordered another item with the $8.00 standard ground shipping and that package arrived literally one day earlier. It's not worth it at all to pay for shipping if you're not in a rush.

Customer service has always been a breeze and I've never had a problem returning anything. Returns are always prompt and they don't take a long time to return funds to your account. It usually only takes 2-3 days after they receive it. I called customer service once and the CSR was really nice and helpful.

I don't want to completely discourage people from shopping with ModCloth because I've found a couple really great dresses, but you need to be smart about it and do research to avoid big disappointments.

It seems that most of the negative reviews are coming from customers outside the US having to deal with extra customs costs. As a US customer, none of those are applicable. Their customer service has been fantastic and my overall experience is very positive. I love the selection of unique and quirky items they carry. However, I deducted a star simply because of how long it takes them to process returns and exchanges. It takes about a week (possibly more depending on the speed of the shipping source) for them to receive it, but THEN it can take another SEVERAL weeks to process. When youve put in to exchange for a different size and/or color, this can be very frustrating because by the time theyve processed it, the particular size/color you requested may have sold out. But even if this isnt a concern because youre just doing a regular return, it seems like it takes forever to see that refund come in. The other reason I deducted a star is because they dont run sales very much and are chintzy with their coupons. Most other retailers I shop with are very generous with the amount of sales they run and the frequency and amount of coupons they send out, but its a rare occasion to receive a ModCloth coupon. So, they get four stars for their quality items and their great customer service, but they lose a star for their minuscule sales and coupons, and for taking about the same amount of time to process returns and exchanges it takes to watch paint dry.

Hi, Morgan. Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. Please rest assured that I will share your feedback regarding returns and exchanges with the appropriate team! I know that exchanges, in particular, can be a frustrating wait. There is an option available called a "quick exchange", which can certainly speed up the process! It involves re-ordering and returning, and our Customer Care team would assist with that, to ensure you receive the same price on the new item, as you did on the original. It is definitely a good option, if you're on a time crunch for a new size/color! Our team can also give more details, if you'd like to reach out to them at modcloth.com/help.

I think the concept isn't that unique, modcloth is sort of like an affordable Anthropologie but online only. And Tracy Reese makes a crossover so my comparison stands; D. Modcloth features vintage/retro/indie designer clothing, apparel and accessories for the fashion conscious and possibly for the lookbook crowd. Generally their clothing are very budget friendly and the designers they feature do have unique designs. They also have a program where buyers can vote on potential designs where winning ones get sold! Things become out of stock quickly but based on community demand, they restock which I think is a smart tactic for not having excesses.

They've overhauled their shipping to free over $50 which is easy to obtain with free returns, except on final sale items (pay attention). I ordered a dress and I have to agree with some other reviewers that even if they have no involvement in the production of their items, they have some responsibility in encouraging the featuring or not featuring of designers or companies that keep making low quality products. For example, the dress I ordered I would rate had very thin material (it was around $99 originally, on sale for $60) and I was not pleased with the drape because of that. It was constructed with fairly good quality, passable I'd say (I was afraid of ripping it when trying it on) and the quality of the material itself with again, fair. That being said, if the industry standard is in importing cheap materials and poor workmanship then no one is going to go out of their way to make less of a profit. If everyone's product is shoddy and around the same price range, then the consumer doesn't really have a choice but to accept it. In that sense, it's not their fault - but in another sense, they can do something about it.

I like the range of items on their site - they're very whimsical and downright adorable. I like the vibe of modcloth overall and it's a great alternative to what's available right now.

I've been shopping since 2011. Over the years I've spent thousands of dollars. I made it a ritual to check the website almost daily (Swoon and Noon and Nine!) because they would always have such delightful, fun, interesting and appealing items every day.

Since the merger especially, but even before that, the quality and experience has definitely gone down hill. I'm not going to complain about something I ordered not fitting me right. That's just what happens when you shop online. Quality of clothing varies and fit can also vary widely. That's not ModCloth's fault.

But the quality of the overall shopping experience as a whole has declined: $70 for dresses that used to cost like $50 (I'm looking at you Coach Tour), daily updates feature like 6 products instead of the dozen or so we used to get, and the updates now are just... so drab and uninspired and depressing and uninteresting. It boggles the mind. ModCloth used to be FRESH! And Unique! And I feel like the clothing they select now is not as cute, interesting, or unique as it once was.

They've also started slowly discontinuing long-time favorites like the Charter School Cardigan, Coach Tour dresses, Soda Shop dresses, etc. They discontinued home items which were so much fun and if they carried bedspreads in larger than Queen I might have actually bought some.

Now it's easier and more exciting for me to just get the names of the brands they order from and go directly to the designer to get stuff whenever I can. I can usually find additional cute and exciting items right from the designer rather than waiting weeks to get excited about anything ModCloth shows up on their New Arrivals.

Customer service remains a positive experience for me. I've had a lot of assistance over the years and everyone has been super.

What used to be my go-to clothing store, where I exclusively bought ALL of my entire wardrobe, is now just a disappointing, sad mainstream store with an uninspired and disjointed product catalog. There are still some really adorable unique gems on the site, but finding them now is fewer and farther between. Less money spent on the ridiculous photoshoots and more money invested in buyers might be a good idea.

Very poor customer service. Stay away from them. I ordered an item $44.99 + $7 shipping. The item arrived, however, I was not pleased at all because the material looks so cheap, I would not even bother to wear it. I asked for a return, they would not allow me, according to them the item I bought clearly stated that it cannot be returned or exchange. It was the first time I heard of such policy. Anywhere I buy whether the item is on sale or not it can always be returned. As the saying goes "Customer is always right".

Anyway, a day day after I requested for refund, I decided to check back on the item at their website and found out it was listed half the price of what I paid for at $19.99. I called them and they issued me a a store credit of $25. They should have agreed to issue store refund of $55.26 instead, since they sold the item to me twice the price. Anyway, realising that it's better to get something back than none at all, I placed 3 items immediately in lieu of the $25 store credit and was expecting a free shipping, since they owe me explanation of why I paid double for the first item and they do not want to issue any refund or return at all. If I have ordered all items at one time (the item I was returning and the 3 items I bought as store credit) I should have only paid 1 time shipping. Nevertheless, again, they don't want to give me free shipping. About 15 minutes after I placed my order, I decided to change 1 item to another item totally the same kind but different design which I added to my wish list, according to them they cannot do it any more. Their customer service representative stated: "Once an item is ordered it cannot be changed any more." Very, very, very poor customer service, 15 minutes after placing order, YOU CAN NEVER CHANGE IT AT ALL! Totally not fair! STAY AWAY FROM THEM! Beware!"

I had a coat in my cart, $204.00, and was waiting for a sale. I found out on Tuesday from my daughter that she got an Email that coats were on sale on Monday for 15%. I never got the email about the sale but kept getting emails to hurry and buy the coat because I left something in the cart. The next day I got one about shoes being on sale, they were running weekly special each day. I communicated back and forth with customers service and asked if they would honor the sale even though it was Tues. They offered what they thought was a generous 10%. I said you mean to tell me you cannot honor the 15% for one day. Every excuse, the answer was no. He gave me a coupon code for 10%. On Wed. I ordered the coat as a present, mainly because it was the last one with the wonderful gift of 10%. Now today the I got an email offered 20%. Ya I called back an got this sweet as sugar girl on the phone that would not make the adjustment. I asked for a manager and sugar said well good luck hope she can help. I was put on hold for a long time so sugar could tell the manager the story. The manager comes on to act like she knows nothing about the situation but as we spoke I know she had it relayed to her. I asked if she could give me credit in my account for when I buy something else, the answer was... you can give two discounts on the same purchase. She said I could send the coat back, of course I have to pay shipping and they I would have to order another one today at the 20% off. Okay how is that saving anything. Would you not think if they gave me a credit in my account, that I would buy something else and spend more money. You can call any store and they would be happy to help their customers, Travel Smith, Penney's, Macys. NOT MODCLOTH

Been ordering since 2006, won't again
December 23, 2021

I've been ordering from ModCloth since I was in high school and I'm absolutely appalled at how bad it's gotten.

This past Black Friday, I placed an order for almost $300 worth of items, at about $150 thanks to Black Friday sales. Didn't hear a single peep out of them for nearly a month, until the week before Christmas, I get an email saying my order was refunded.

I ask customer service why this happened and I get ignored for two days.

I@ them on Twitter and get an immediate response to my customer service request -- and blocked by them on Twitter.

They tell me the order was returned to them so it was processed and refunded-- all except the $10 I paid for shipping.

I never got a shipping email. From all accounts, it looks like the order never left their building. It probably got lost somewhere and when they found it, instead of express shipping it to me AS THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE, they processed it as a return and decided to keep my shipping.

Nearly four weeks and I was not contacted about this once. I was not asked if I still wanted the order. Nothing. Not a peep.

I am understandably angry about this, but I am especially angry to find out that they then went and sold all the items in my order and now everything is unavailable.

Why does this make me extra angry?

BECAUSE I AM STILL GETTING ADS FOR THOSE ITEMS.

Two weeks later, and I am still getting ads telling me to buy the items back full price.

Now I have Christmas gifts that will be late to people. I tell them they need to refund my shipping and they do-- as a courtesy, they tell me.

You never shipped my stuff in the first place. You did not complete your end of the bargain. And now Customer Service Manager Aaron has the gall to tell me, "oh what a bummer?"

I have no faith in this company anymore. They clearly don't care about their customers. I can only assume this whole endeavor was just to make a quick buck by turning around and selling the items I ordered at full price. I've worked in e-commerce for over ten years and every company, from the smallest to worldwide will ALWAYS contact customers if a package didn't go out when it was supposed to. Not return it to the shelf and sell it, while pocketing the shipping.

The gall.

ModCloth has amazing selection and all, but the international shipping is complete garbage.

Before ordering, I KNEW that ModCloth had COD (cash on delivery) shipping for the 3-4 day shipping option. Since I wanted my purchase to come faster since it was for an event, I chose that option.
I had done my research and from the reviews I had seen people were generally charged an additional $52-$75 Canadian upon delivery for purchases totaling $150-$250. Since my purchase was $116 I expected to be charged slightly less. I was wrong.

I chose the 3-4 day delivery method which is $26.97 CAD because I wanted my purchase to be here faster for an event I'm going to. My total purchase was only $116.96 INCLUDING shipping, but somehow I ended up having to pay an additional $52 for COD. And since the UPS deliveryman didn't have change on him, and I didn't want to have to go to the UPS warehouse myself to pick it up, I ended up giving him $60 instead. (Yes, I know. I wasted the extra $8 myself. That is NOT ModCloth's fault- I just didn't want to go through the hassles of picking up the package myself from the UPS warehouse the next day.)

As much as I LOVE their clothing, I can honestly say I will never be buying from MC again. Ever.

Hi, Nataliia. I apologize for those unexpected fees! I know that customs costs can be an inconvenience. Please know that we are currently working on a solution to make the shopping and customs experience better for our International customers, so hopefully that will be improved shortly! I know that at the moment, the site is closed to the EU, due to GDPR, but please know we're hoping to have it re-opened soon, so that you can start shopping again, with ease!

I've ordered from ModCloth three times, and have nothing bad to say. The prices are quite reasonable, and discounts are incredible. By and large, the clothing has been excellent quality, and the one time it wasn't, Customer Service made it right. I was able to get Stop Staring's Pine All Mine Dress which retails for $189 for $107. It fits me like it was made for me - even though I was surprised I needed a Medium, as I usually wear a 4 or 6. My first order also included a pair of shoes on which the sole peeled off after one wearing. I called Customer Service who immediately processed a full refund and sent me a prepaid return label. I placed my most recent order because I had a mailed coupon for 30% off, which was great, but when I went to checkout, the Honey discount app said there was a 40% discount code. So I saved serious money. I got two dresses, a cardigan and a pair of pants for $182! The pants were wide leg trousers, and, based on other reviews, I ordered a Medium, although I normally need a size 12 for my hips. They did fit in the waist, but the pleats were splitting and the pockets were pulling too much, so I decided to return them. I opted for the store credit plus $5 offer and requested an exchange. Unfortunately, they didn't have a Large in stock, but they said to go ahead and request it, and if it comes back in stock, they will send it. It was also suggested to check the "Still Need It" button on the item page, because if there's enough demand, ModCloth will restock an item. Well, 5 days after I returned the pants, I got an email saying they were back in stock in size Large. I called Customer Service to find out whether my return was being processed as a return or whether they were automatically sending out the Large as an exchange. I spoke to Lily, who suggested I do a "quick exchange" in order to ensure I got the size I needed. Even though the pants were no longer on sale, and selling for the retail price of $74.99, Lily gave me the 40% off price of $44.99, and Free Shipping, too! I have to say, I am surprised that the company is owned by WalMart, as I would never shop there. My usual stores are J. Peterman and Anthropologie. If ModCloth continues in this vein, I will definitely continue shopping here.

I haven't had any issues with returns or customer service, as many of these complaints have been.
Mostly, my issue has come from the clothing or accessories. I'm plus-sized, so the places I can shop for items that are cute or on trend can be difficult. I feel that ModCloth has Lane Bryant and Torrid prices with three year old, cotton/polyester blend, dumpster erosion quality. I've had shirts come apart after one washing, skirts not fit despite what the size chart says the size is, or items that are simply not flattering. The size chart is joke! Since ModCloth gets items from tons of different vendors, and the sizing isn't customized to the vendor's sizing, it's impossible to know what you're getting. Also the majority of the time, the brands aren't listed in the description, so you can't investigate more about it to see if that's an item that could work for you. You know, since ModCloth isn't doing that footwork for you, you'd think they'd make it possible for you to do it. I bought earrings for $14.99, and they came unglued after a few days. So, there seems to be very little quality control, just pretty pictures and clever names attached to items you wouldn't have even given a second glance to if you'd seen them in person. However, it's online, so you take chances and trust pictures. The majority of the ModCloth merchandise proves itself to be inferior. To give ModCloth its due, I have had some successes. And I continued to buy from the brands that worked, but it shouldn't be a situation where only about 25% of the time the clothes or accessories you get are good. And I mean only good, not exceptional, and, generally, not worth the price. With ModCloth, you're paying for wonderful pictures and clever names; you're buying the fantasy. Because after several purchases, it's become evident the quality of the products DOES NOT live up to how they are advertised.

On the overall, I like Modcloth. I have ordered from this store several times over the past five or six years. I like their selection and I really like that they cater to the plus size market too. Out of the 20+ pieces I have ordered, about 2/3rds have been well-made.

Since they have different designers, some things are wonderfully made; others, not so much. I ordered a cotton dress where the material was so nice and sturdy that people commented that it looked like it had been made decades ago before all of the fabric downgrades. I ordered another dress that was supposed to be okay in the washer, but shrank so much that it was unwearable as anything other than a top.

The only real complaint I have with Modcloth is their direly slow shipping. I ordered clothing for a vacation once, four or five items, about a week before I was due to leave. Despite paying through the nose for two day shipping for it, they didn't arrive on time. I contacted customer service and they were nice, and they completely refunded my shipping and gave me a 25% off promo code, but told me at that point I had to contact fedex. Fedex was not so nice and they did not arrive before I left for vacation.

Generally speaking, their "savvy saver" shipping (the cheapest) usually pushes the limits of their 9 days max promise. The galling thing about that is that I only live a two hour drive from their warehouse's location, but they use a convoluted service that starts out with Fedex and ends with USPS. I think if they used another service and even if it raised the cost of standard shipping, it would still be a lot better for their customers.
