  • The Animal Rescue Site

3/2/10

The games are part of The Animal Rescue Site but with an added benefit. Each of the games offers a donation to animal rescues shelters. While it's free for us to play the games, the animals still benefit because the advertisers are the ones making the donations while we're only giving up a little free time.

So, if you have a few minutes, play solitaire or the bubble game or something and help an animal in distress. We're the only voices they have.

For any of you that run across this blog site, know what you're stepping off into first. There is virtually no moderation for the site and the personal attacks on bloggers by other bloggers are brutal.

Get this! You can flag an inappropriate comment and you'll be lucky if it's ever removed. If you want it removed within 24 hours, they want you to pay them $19.95! So, you get trolled and attacked and then have to pay the website to remove the offending comments, which are usually numerous so they are making money hand over fist off of their bloggers misery!

The following item was posted on the Kentucky forum from the Attorney General's Office. It's not just Kentucky and Connecticut, this is a problem on all of the forums on Topix in every state and in different countries as well.

In a letter sent today to Topix.com CEO Chris Tolles, General Conway and Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, chair of the National Association of Attorneys General Multistate Task Force on Internet Safety, expressed their significant concerns with the Topix.com "Forums and Polls" pages and the website's $19.99 fee for "priority review" of inappropriate posts that violate the website's terms of service. An initial investigation by the attorneys general reveals that the "Forums and Polls" section is used to post derogatory information and appears to operate without moderators. In fact, a large percentage of the posts in some Kentucky forums contain explicit, vulgar, obscene and defamatory posts about citizens, including children.
"Abusive or negative posts can have a devastating impact on youth. Tragically, many teenagers today turn to suicide as a way to escape abuse or cyberbullying on the Internet," said General Conway. "I have heard from parents, consumers and officials from across Kentucky who have complained about the outrageous comments that are allowed to be posted and not policed by Topix. General Blumenthal and I find it deplorable that any website would deliberately create an environment where false and derogatory comments about children, or anyone, would be permitted and then allowed to remain on the website."
Generals Conway and Blumenthal urged Topix to remove abusive posts as soon as possible and not try to profit from their removal. The attorneys general also caution that requiring consumers to pay to remove posts that violate the site's terms of service poses serious consumer protection concerns. Even though the website allows users to "flag" posts for removal, consumers have found that to be ineffective in removing posts. Consumers are also given the option of paying $19.99 for an "expedited review," which does appear effective in having the post removed. The attorneys general also complain that the website is confusing and appears designed to steer people toward payment of the $19.99 option.
"How outrageous that targets of false and obscene posts may be victimized twicefirst by the abusive comment and then by the charge to remove it. Topix should reward, not rip off, consumers and victims who report abusive posts, particularly any targeting children, that violate the website's own policies," said General Blumenthal.
The attorneys general say they respect a person's first amendment rights and the protections afforded to Internet Service Providers by federal law; however, the first amendment does not protect libelous comments. In their letter, they ask Tolles to contact them to respond to the concerns they have expressed.
"We hope that Topix will address our concerns in a constructive and positive way," said General Conway. "We were successful in working with social networking giants MySpace and Facebook and with Craigslist in making changes to their websites that benefit children. We hope Topix will respond in a similar manner."

  • RepairPal

6/3/10

I just saw this story on the news about this website. You can go to it prior to taking your vehicle in for repairs or maintenance and type in everything about your car and it's issues and it will give a an estimate that you SHOULD get. (Channel 13 Eyewitness new ran the story and they'll probably have something about it on their website.)

In other words, you will have a little insight or ballpark figure for what your repairs or maintenance should cost and then you can weigh that against the actual estimate to see if your auto repair is trying to stick it to you or not.

They also list repair shops in good standing, sort of a BBB thing. So, before you give into the grease monkey's, check this site out and get an idea of what you should and shouldn't be charged. Forewarned is forearmed!

  • ComplaintsBoard

It's pretty bad when you go to a link that takes you to a consumer protection site that contains a TROJAN VIRUS and hits you when you open the link.

I was following a link on an intriguing story regarding some kind of web scam and it brought me to the complaints board and immediately my virus softwear caught and quarantined a Trojan virus.

My advice; stick to THIS site if you want information on an online business or just to browse complaints. Even websites can be wolves in sheeps clothing so just stick with the tried and true sitejabber and don't bother with the complaintsboard.com.

  • Animal Planet

2/27/10

I love this site. If you're an animal lover and a fan of the Animal Planet Channel with it's shows like "I'm Alive", "The Haunted" and "It's Me or the Dog", you'll like it too.

There are quizzes, puzzles and other activities for both children and adults, videos, blogs, free wallpapers, a virtual Vet, info on animal breeds and much more.

It's a good site for everyone in the family and even advice on how to get involved with saving endangered animals. You can also find the TV schedules for your favorite Animal Planet channel shows. Stop by and check it out. It's a fun site.

  • Sitejabber

2/19/10

This is a wonderful website. We've needed something like this. Especially when websites refuse to respond to consumers and bloggers and just choose to ignore the problem, we can sure speak our minds here. I was very happy to find this site as I didn't even know how to begin to let people know about the various websites that we all see every day. SiteJabber is awesome!

  • Big Fish Games

2/22/10

This is a great site if you love games. They have Hidden Object games, strategy, puzzles, word, card and just about any kind of game that tickles your fancy.

You can download a free trial of most games and you can play many online games as well. Games are also available for purchase and I've purchased several of them and I've been very happy with their games and their customer service. I've never had a problem with them or any game I've purchased and I've been on that site for a couple of years now.

Just about anyone can find a game they'll like here. It's a good way to keep your mind sharp too.

  • UrbanDictionary

2/21/10

This is another really fun site. If you don't understand a particular slang saying or word or you just wanna learn some fun new terms, this is the site to go to. It's really pretty humorous as well as informative.

Someone told me one day that someone "fartled" them. I said "what?" They told me to look the word up on urban dictionary and I did and it gave me quite a chuckle, lol. It's obviously a slang, made up term, lol. I'll let you look this one up on your own, lol.

So, next time one of your teenagers seem to be speaking in a foreign language, just check the urban dictionary to see if you can decipher it. ;)

  • Click2Houston

2/19/10

It used to be a really good site where you comment/blog with one another until they started closing most of the news stories to comments. The major stories you can't comment on anymore. They might only have 1 or 2 crap stories about insignificant b. S. for days at a time. We regulars on there have emailed complaint after complaint to them but they don't even bother responding nor are they doing anything to open up more stories. We've even complained to Managing Editor of the site, Lyn Stewart, who completely ignores us all. I wouldn't bother even reading their news stories anymore. Half the time the articles are hastily and poorly written anyway. They use Disqus for their comment program but Disqus can't do anything to help the situation. The only problem with Disqus is the automated moderating system won't let a lot of innocent comments through for some reason. In fact, one of the key words that will keep your comment from appearing is the word "never". Seriously, lol, it won't let the the word never through or links either. You have to write "never" as "ne ver" with a space so it will get through. When you do get the moderator pop up that says your comment must be approved by a moderator before posting, you will never see it posted. That's because it's the responsibility of click2houston to moderate their site and they NEVER approve it or even look at it so it isn't Disqus' fault, it's laziness or whatever on part of click2houston. They simply do not care about their bloggers at click2 at all. Myfoxhouston.com is better. The only reason we still try to comment on click2 is that we have regular blog buddies and that that we interact with. Now, the site is losing bloggers and it's getting ridiculously boring.

  • HowStuffWorks

2/25/10

Many of you have seen the TV show How Stuff Works so if you haven't googled it and stopped by the shows website, you might want to give it a look.

They've got quizzes, (including one on identity theft) and blogs and other fun stuff there. A good way to kill some time or if you're bored. You can even ask questions on how stuff works. Pretty cool site in my book.

Note: If you do nothing else, stop by and take the Dollars and Sense Identity Theft Quiz. It's very informative and will give you an idea of how much you really know about identity theft.

  • Campbell's Kitchen

2/21/10

We all know about Campbell's soups and have enjoyed them but there's a lot more you can do with a can of soup than just heat and eat.

This site has a lot of good recipes, like French Onion Burgers, casseroles and healthy heart-smart recipes as well.

If you're pressed for time, you'll find some recipes here to fit your lifestyle and be prepared and cooked in a hurry. I use the Cream of Mushroom soup mix to make a quick Beef Stroganoff and Mushroom Chicken. Both are delicious and easy.

There is also a coupon savings link and an online community. Maybe if you're getting bored or your family is getting bored with the same old menu, you can find something here to try. I generally try to introduce a new recipe once a week just to break up any monotony. My family enjoys it and I love trying new things.

They even have a recipe navigator where you can search by "need". Like for a time saver recipe and you can even search by "mood", like if you're in the mood for chicken or whatever.

Give it a shot. I think you'll like this site very much. ;)

  • CheapTickets

6/28/10

I've used this site for 3 trips to Australia now and have had very good results. They have fairly good rates and everything has always ran very smoothly with my etickets and their customer service was good when I had to make changes to my flight except for one little snag.

Here's a little tip for you. If you have to change your flight, try going through your actual airline to make the changes because you'll find it's a bit cheaper than if you change it through cheaptickets. You'll likely still be hit with some financial punishment but cheaptickets was more expensive to make the necessary adjustments. Usually it'll cost around $250 plus any increase in airfare if there is any. But CT wanted to charge me $450 so I took a chance and called the airline and they took care of it all for me. Just make sure you have your booking number on hand.

Other than that, I've been very happy with this site and their service and I'm going to be booking with them again soon for Australia.

  • MY M&M'S

6/1/10

This is such a cool site! Just about everyone likes M&M's and now you can put just about any picture on one side and your company name, bride and grooms names, kids names, or whatever you want on there.

It costs around $41+ for 3 7oz bags but these are really special and I think worth it. They have gifts you can put them in and send to someone and the like. A lot of people do it for their weddings and to advertise for their businesses. They offer a free bag when you purchase a certain amount. You can go to the website now and upload your photo choices and it will show you a preview. If nothing else, even if you don't order anything, it's kinda fun to play around with it.

  • RipoffReport

2/19/10

Well, Tracy H. Has brought this to my attention just today about ripoffreport.com that's been on the web for quite a while.

Now, I don't know about the owners of the site but I know I've posted legitimate complaints on there. Anyway, the owners have had charges brought against them and Tracy H has provided us with a link so have a look and decide for yourself. I'll be avoiding them in the future and just stick with SiteJabber.

  • DepilSilk

5/13/10

I haven't tried this yet but I had considered it so I did some research on the product and I believe even as much as I hate shaving, I'll stick to my razor.

I read several stories about the products website and it seems that people are getting overcharged and when they call in to question or, they're told there is no information on the account. This apparently happens as well when they call to complain about the product and ask for a refund. One person was even told that there was no supervisor around so they couldn't help them.

I saw that some people loved the product and it worked well but no better than what you can find in the stores while others complained of their skin burning and that it didn't work all that well for them.

So, if you want to try this product, more power to you but I'd wait till it comes out and is sold in the stores being as I could not find one favorable review on the website for Depil Silk at all.

  • Drugs.com

2/21/10

This is a great website for everyone! This site is for Doctors and patients as well as family members to check on the side affects and interactions of prescription medications and even tells you how some over the counter meds might affect and interact with others and your prescription meds.

Yahoo offers an application in conjunction with this site where you can enter the data on your prescription meds or a family members meds and remains as an online personal record. The thing I love about this is that I've got my older sister and a roommate that is disabled and both of them are on prescription medications. I have both records that I can access at any time and if they get a new prescription, I can enter it and see how it will work with the ones they're already on.

For busy Doctors this is a great website as well to have a quick look at when prescribing meds for their patients.

My sister is on a battery of meds and one day, she had a psychotic episode because she was prescribed two medications that were not compatible and she ended up in the hospital for nearly a week while the Doctors figured out what happened. I wish I'd known about this site before that happened!

Also, if I may make a suggestion. If you have a heart patient or someone in your household that may have to be taken by ambulance in an emergency, you may want to enter all the meds and keep a printed out copy for the medical staff that you can hand over so they can see what prescriptions and OTC drugs the patient is taking and then know immediately what treatment to administer. It beats gathering up prescription bottles in a hurry for EMS and the ER Doctors. Oh, and you can sign up for FDA notifications and warnings to come straight to your email too.

I hope this helps someone out. I've found it to be a very valuable site for my family.

  • Preshunt

I ordered an Old Tupton Ware figurine from this company for a birthday gift for a friend in England and the item was delivered directly to her door in perfect condition and much faster than I thought it would be. Excellent company and I highly recommend them to anyone. I found them on Amazon.com and they have a 99% positive rating. I'm very happy with their product and service and will definitely use again.

  • Annoyingcoworker

10/24/10

I'm LMAO! Gotta coworker who hums, whistles or whines all day and drives you bat-$#*!, lol? This is the place for you! You can air your grievance and send it to them and they won't have a clue who you are if you word it right.

I had a coworker that had such bad B. O. that it used to gag us all! We left him a can of deodorant in his box and no one would sit in his chair at shift changes. Still, he didn't get the hint. I finally had to tell him he smelled like a wet donkey but I hated to have to do it cause he was actually a nice man but it had to be done. Wish this site had been around when he was!

  • Where's George?

6/21/10

This is a fun site if you're interested in where your money has been or where it's going... literally!

What you do is you can enter the serial number on your bills, all denominations, and if someone has entered this same bill into the site, it'll tell you where it's been. It's a fun tracking system.

I've gotten bills from overseas where military personnel had exchanged it for foreign currency and I got a dollar bill that had traveled all the way from Germany to me in Texas. You can start by entering your own and the site keeps a list of the bills you entered and you can track them and see where they're at whenever you want. I got one from Louisiana today that had traveled 421 miles in 4 days.

Some people order a stamp to stamp their bills with the web address on there to let others know it's been entered but if you're worried about writing on US money, of course, you don't have to. I seriously doubt the Secret Service is going to beat down your door for it but that's up to you. I've written the web address on many asked that they be entered. Some ppl don't write or stamp on it but it still may be in the database anyway.

Anyway, I find it fun and interesting and boy, do I need a life but hey, it'll work until I get one, lol.

  • Kidprotect.org

3/3/10

In this age of technology where nearly every home has a computer and even really young children can navigate their way around the web, parental controls are great but just not enough.

On this site, you can educate yourself and your children about the dangers that lurk on the internet. You can never learn too much or be too aware about the ways of child predators on the web. It's up to us to protect our kids and whether they like it or not, parents must remain in control of the content and people that they're exposed to on the web.

This site offers helpful tips, communities where parents can interact with one another, online safety guides and much more. Stop by and have a look. You just might learn something new.

Our children are our most precious resource and we need to be in control, not the sicko predators out there. Too many tragedies have already occurred. No matter how much they might grumble about it today, they'll end up thanking you tomorrow when they've grown up safe, secure, feeling loved and happy.
