About Me

Except for the two years at Umass, Amherst, I've lived my life in Maryland. My career was spent in higher ed teaching figurative sculpture and ceramics. Two grown sons and two cute dogs (the one pictured is named Popcorn), plus some exes. I'm very generous with panhandlers and I pick up stray dogs. I am extremely worried about the disparity of wealth and the danger it poses to Democracy and freedom in the US.i.e. our current President. I'm extremely curious.

How I Can Help

I know a great deal about art and ceramics. I'm a trained mediator. I know a fair amount about plumbing, carpentry, electrical work and cooking.

Interests

, reading and making things, I'm a sculptor. I really like to travel

Correction:
The company informed me that their free gift is a holiday tradition, not unsold merchandise
I sent this to Nuts.com:
Congratulations! I always thought nothing is free but it seems I was wrong, I recently purchased some, hard to find, chocolate covered orange peel. They are very, very good. As I was emptying the shipping box,"When what to my wondering eyes did appear..." but a free holiday tin of four different treats, including surprisingly yummy, chocolate-covered gummy bears and tiny white chocolate pretzels! This, I assume was unsold holiday merchandise, which you could have been sold at reduced cost. Instead you added them, free-of-charge, including shipping, to my order. What a company! FYI, I'm going to repost this on Sitejabber.com; you may want to take a look. Have a prosperous New Year!

  • Coyote Clay & Color

FYI, I am a university trained ceramic sculptor with over 50 years experience. If you are reading this you likely already know that Coyote Glazes produces a line of ceramic glazes for a variety of firing temperature. I purchased several of their cone 6 glazes including a shino glaze and they all worked well. Several months later, I went to use them again only to find that the shino glaze ingredients had formed small hexagonal crystals, thus rendering the glaze useless. In all my years in ceramics I had never heard of or seen this happen. I contacted the company about the problem and they explained that it said on the package, (in very small type), not to store below 65 degrees. I pointed out that something that important should have a more highly visible label. The owner agreed and sent me replacement product at no cost. Yet again my faith in humankind is reinforced.
SUGGESTION: The thickness of the liquid glaze in the bucket is very important for consistent and predictable results. If you don't know already, find out what a hydrometer is and learn how to use it. Forget the-glaze -should coat-your -hand business.

  • Match

8/14/18

UPDATE: Recently "Match"violated their contract by omitting some of the info they initially agreed to provide. This was done without consulting members. The other complaints mentioned below still apply
The only thing one can count on with this site is getting a list with pics of single people that fit your age requirements. If you are a man, it also seems likely that you will contacted by a very young East European woman attempting a scam. Fortunately they are not very clever. So just be realistic. Using the site is difficult as there are few directions. Also, at times they will ignore all of your preferences including your decision to remove a match from your list of possibilities. In the past, when I used Eharmony I had none of the problems I've experienced here.

  • Rockler Companies Inc.

5/21/18

This was a first for me. I recently received an inquiry from Rockler asking if I would be willing to help a customer who was considering purchasing an item that I had previously purchased. While I was unable to answer their question I was able to make a suggestion. Recognizing that to a certain extant I was doing Rockler's job I thought that by putting one person in contact with another it gave us the opportunity to feel better about our fellow man/woman. I would feel better for helping someone and they would feel better knowing that someone cared enough to try and help. Win win.
I like the spirit of the company.

This electronic cigarette is very poorly designed and annoying to use. It is rectangular in shape; apparently designed to feel comfortable in an alien's mouth. The electrical contacts for both the charging and vaping are poorly designed and therefore require constant attention for both cleanliness and position. As a result the vapor flow is very eratic ranging from no or little vapor to adequate vapor to a mouthfull of liquid caused by drawing a little too forcefully... YUK. Adding insult to injury their phone customer service is terrible. By using Filipino operators the customer is assisted by someone who has good basic english skills but is totally unable to understand anything but simple concepts and sentences. Take a look at eSTICK.

Before you get started be aware that regular shipping is apparently by horse drawn wagon, 10-12 business days! Translation 2-3 weeks!

This is an unusual review because I am only able to review one aspect of their business. I made an appointment and they showed up and gave an estimate. They said they would return in a couple of weeks to do the job. During the past two months I have been "sincerely" promised on at least 5 different occasions that they would arrive on a particular date, sometime in the future; one time in two days. Never showed up. It's clear they aren't truthful and they are likely cherry-picking jobs for those with the highest return and the least effort. I can't imagine what it would take to get them to come back to fix a problem with their repair/build.

Wrote to iTouchless about their product failures (four cans) and they wrote back suggesting I call. Which I did. Vicki the customer service rep proceeded to tell me all the ways I might have caused the problem... four times! When I told her that reviews on Amazon showed a failure rate of at least 20% she insisted that it was only 1-2%. Huh? She also assured me that the cans are expected to last ten years. With a one year warranty, I guess they aren't too confident.

I surrender! I've foolishly purchased four of these and all have lasted about a year. It could be argued that at $59 what should I expect and that may be a valid point. But, and it's a big but (not Kardashian) the carbon footprint created in manufacturing it, when compared to its useful life, must be huge!

  • Skype

Signed up for Skype and used it for a few months and it worked well. The nightmare began when I tried to cancel my subscription. You may find this hard to believe but first I had to create an account to close an account. HUH? Anyway, after several attempts over several days I was finally able to chat with customer service. I explained that I wanted to cancel my subscription and guess what... SHE COULDN'T DO IT! She was however, able to direct me to a previously unknown page. I completed the process and now the coup de grace. On a virtually instantaneous internet service with electronic account maintenance it will take 30 DAYS! I guess they just want to get one more monthly payment? UPDATE: I waited the required month and would you believe I was still unable to figure out how to cancel the service. Solution: Cancelled auto-pay with my bank. To Skype I say "Nanny, Nanny Noo Noo!

Can you really believe a company which connects the review of a product to a site for purchase. Clearly this company is paid by the number of customers it recommends. How many buyers would purchase a product with a truly negative review. Think about Moody and Poors stock, bond and company ratings. From experience (see review), their number 10 rated Juul is unacceptable. The ONLY site for honest reviews, and I've used them for more than 45 years, is "Consumer Reports". You may not agree with their reviews but their primary goal is to protect the consumer. They accept no ads and also initiate consumer protection legislation.

  • Sotheby’s

I recenty purchased/won a set of antique glassware and all went smoothly until I was informed by Sotheby's that one of the glasses was broken and a damaged one could be repaired. Their offer was to repair the damaged item and reduce the buying price on a pro-rated basis. There was no consideration for my need of a specific number 0f glasses or the fact that I might not find the repair to be acceptable. This resulted in numerous back and forth emails in which I countered with a request a full refund. For a while it appeared as though their offer would be one of take-it-or-leave-it. It was only through my insistence and and the help of an understanding employee that I prevailed and was given a full refund. The lesson is, be persistent and make a good and reasonable argument.

  • Mensdesignershoes

1/29/18

I believe in buying good shoes, particularly those made in Italy. No more breaking-in shoes and they look great. This company carries a wide range of well-made shoes and some also come in wide. No need to jump around from site to site comparing manufacturers and syles. Shipping is included in price. These shoes aren't cheap but if you wear shoes as long as I do (I'm a man) the quality is well worth the price (cost per year). FYI: If you are like me and have feet of two different sizes or your feet are between sizes, a shoe stetcher is inexpensive and will solve the problem.

  • Battery Mart

A battery listed at $2.95 each cost $1.25 when ordering six! Unlike some online retailers the hipping cost of $2.95 seemed very reasonable. Site was easy to navigate and payment coordinated with Paypal was simple and quick

The razor doesn't work well for a technical reason. The plastic that permits the razor head to swivel is too stiff; as a result it takes too much pressure to bring the head in full contact with the skin. To solve this design flaw, one must press harder or "swivel" one's hand instead; a rather awkward and not very effective process. Since the handle can't be used with other razor heads consider the paperweight suggestion.
Response to Harry's contact.
While I'm sure your advice is well intended, it ignores the fact that the pivot (plastic) is much stiffer than your competitors, i. E. push it with your finger To expect customers to practice with your product suggests that you don't understand human nature; look at your reviews. Suggestion: Either reformulate the plastic ("softer") or make the pivot point thinner. If you make the change, let me know

The way that the blade head flexes can definitely take some getting used to. Letting the blade do most of the work on its own tends to result in the closest shave! The less pressure, the better. We hope that you'll give it a few more tries.

A quick description: Ordered two 3v lithium batteries which were available at a very low price (pos). The shipping was a bit costly (neg), thus the four stars. They arrived in a timely fashion with a follow-up email asking about their service and the product. Simple and easy.

  • Smithey

The company describes their cookware as being hand-forged which is untrue. Hand-forging is neither practical nor effective. To better understand hand-forging, imagine the old village blacksmith standing "under a spreading chestnut tree" making the curves of the pan hammering on a flat piece of red hot iron. This is a labor intensive method that would would make the pan unaffordable for most people. Also, cookware works best when the bottom of the pan is a uniform thickness. To do that by hand-forging is virtually impossible. Im not sure what is hand-forged but it certainly isn't the pan. They also show photographs of some of their pots having hammer marks; I'm almost certain they are too uniform to have been done by hand. If the company is willing to mislead the potential buyer about this, it makes one wonder what other information they provide is misleading. FYI The "smithey" in their company name is a misspelling for "smithy", a name for the person doing the work or the place where the work is one.

Tip for consumers:
If you want to try cast iron buy the much much less expensive versions available.

Like many of you, for good reason, I am skeptical and thus anxious about on-line pictures of advertised products. Well, you can relax. What they show you is what you get. The bag I ordered arrived quickly and I was pleased to see the quality of the bag is excellent. The thickness of the goat leather is substantial and the stitching
on the bag is straight and precise. My initial thought was that this bag will last a very long time and will look better and better as the scuffs and stains acquired in travel add to the original "patina". So, if Covid ever permits us to travel, for either business or pleasure or simply on a daily basis, one of these bags will be great to carry. NOTE: For shipping purposes, the bag arrives tightly folded and will require some use for the wrinkles to disappear. IDEA: I haven't done this but I think it might work. First, stuff the bag fully with old clothes, towels or plastic bags stuffed with newspaper. Then hang the bag in a steamy bathroom as close to the steam source
( shower curtain rod?) as possible for 20-30 minutes. Allow the bag to dry for 2-4 hours; remove the stuffing and check the results. You may need to repeat this process. If you try this before I do, please post the results and let us know how well it worked

We're thrilled that you envision this bag as a long-lasting companion that will develop its unique character over time, embracing the journey it embarks on.

Your thoughtful tips on handling the bag's initial wrinkles are greatly appreciated. It's ingenious to consider stuffing the bag with items like old clothes, towels, or even newspaper-filled plastic bags to help expedite the relaxation of the folds. The steamy bathroom idea you've suggested seems like a promising solution to smoothen the leather's appearance, and we thank you for sharing your creative insights.

We truly value your feedback and the time you've taken to share your experience and ideas. We're eager to continue offering products that meet and exceed your expectations. My contact with the auction house, New York Showplace, was through the "Invaluable " on-line bidding platform. In on-line auctions, when the auction begins for an item all previous bids are shown and the next highest increment is asked for. In the auction in which I was participating, even though I had placed an advance bid and there had been other advance bids, the item appeared with no bids. The auctioneer called for a opening bid of $100. I assumed there had been a problem with my bid so I bid $100 I was therefore surprised to see the bid rise to $400, my max bid, with none of the previous bids showing; thus there was no $350 bid i. E. the increment before my bid. I immediately considered the possibility that I was not bidding against a real bidder but rather a phantom bidder (the auction house). I refused to complete the purchase and NY Showplace registered a complaint with "Invaluable" to which I responded. Ultimately, I did not complete the purchase. My suggestion: follow some on-line auctions until you are familiar with what to expect. Then if irregularities not in your favor occur and you don't get an adequate explanation, stand your ground and refuse payment.

Tip for consumers:
Use on-line auction sites that have a transparent and consistent process.

The real test of a company's integrity happens when there is a problem. I recently had some antique wind-up toys repaired at Randy's. When they were returned one was not working as it should. Long story short: I returned the toy; they made the repair and shipped it to me at no cost. Easy peasy!

If you are interested in purchasing artwork through an auction, this site lists auction houses and their offerings from all over the world. These are live auctions you can "attend" and bid. I've used the site a number of times and have been satisfied with the process, A cautionary note. If you have never attended an auction I suggest you participate in a few and do some mock bidding. This will give you time to become familiar with the prices and more importantly you will reduce the possibility of over-bidding when it's your real money. Only bid on things you really like. Don't forget the dealer's premium and shipping cost have not been added to your bid. Good luck.
