ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I wish I had read these reviews prior to sending my clothes to thread up. I sent a bag full of good quality clothes and brand new shoes (never worn). I sent in June they sent me a notification that they would review in September and when they finally did I was shocked with the exchange rate. Clearly they are rip off artist. They did not accept the new shoes? Doubtful? Plus I sent a skirt and jacket combo practically new but they only accepted the skirt? Will never send them anything ever again!
I sent a bag chocked full of name brand clothes, shoes and bags to them. All my clothes were in terrific condition (a couple items still had tags!) and were still very much in style. I was informed, after waiting almost 2 mos., that they couldn't except ANY of my items! No explanation of why. I WILL be checking their site to see if any of my items appear for sale. Extremely dishonest!
I had over 50 ann Taylor shirts that I would wear to work. They were all in VERY GOOD condition. I made sure to send them almost new shirts since I had read how picky they are and they took longer than the processed date, and not to mention I only got 2 dollars for my clothes. I was robbed! NEVER AGAIN WILL I SEND THEM ANYTHING. Just because it's easy and convenient to send them your stuff. Don't do it!
Hi Ava, we are sorry to hear you feel this way about your clean-out experience. We understand how nerve-wrecking it can be to receive low earnings for your pre-loved items. If you'd like to chat about your clean-out earnings or any of our processes please email support@thredup.com. We'd love to hear from you.

There should be a zero star option. I wouldn't recommend this website to anyone unless you're looking to actually donate; which usually if you're utilizing a website like this you're looking to turn items into some cash. I wish I would have just done the noble thing & donated. I had several very nice pieces, many new with tags or in excellent condition literally worth 100's of dollars, & I got fractions for what I should have or I what I could have using another selling site. & unfortunately once they take it, you don't get to object the "value" they decide each item is worth to them & have them return it. In addition, they take a HUGE % for the items they list as "consignment". Absolutely awful! If you're looking to sell, use Poshmark! If you're looking to donate, donate! Don't waste your time.
Hi Brittany,
Sorry to hear you are unhappy with your experience. Our goal is to provide the easiest way for customers to clean-out their closet of unwanted items. We try to set the right expectations but we understand it's a lot of information to digest. If you'd like to chat about your experience or get a better understanding of your payout please feel free to email support@thredup.com.

Sent two bags stuffed totally full. I did one bag expedited, and the other with return guarantee. So far, only the expedited processing one has been paid out. There were 15 items that they accepted, many with designer labels and tags still on... The sale value on their website totals $164.85. They paid me 15.15 for everything - so a whopping $1.01 average per item. Then, minus the 9.99 expedite fee, and I ended up with about 5$. What an insult! The other bag was ENTIRELY new with tag items, and I'm VERY GLAD that I did a return option on them, but I know that I'll be ripped off in the end because I'm sure they'll accept everything, only to give me pennies after their fees. Sickening! Fool me once - shame on me. ThredUp will NOT fool me twice.
Hi Linda, we are sorry to hear about your frustration with the clean-out experience and we understand it can be annoying to receive low earnings. We try our best to manage expectations around payouts with our pay estimator and our acceptance guidelines but understand that it can be a lot to digest. We'd be happy to walk through the details of your bag with you. Email support@thredup.com, we hope to hear from you soon!:)

Thredup accepted 15 of my clothing items that were in great condition, and I earned no money from it! They deducted $9.99 from the $5.75 that I would have gotten because of a fee. Ridiculous.
Hi Madison, we appreciate your feedback and we're bummed to hear you are unhappy with your bag earnings. We are constantly working hard to improve the clean-out program in fact we just recently added a no bag fee option and expedited bag option. If you'd like to chat about your clean-out bag or any of processes please email support@thredup.com.

Only reason I even spent my money here is because I had a 40% off coupon, clothes are way over priced, plus shipping. I received my items, one item was too small so I returned it, which was easy, but almost a month went by and I hadn't received my credit, I had to find a way to contact them from their website, which is no easy task. The first inquiry, no one even responded back, the second time they let me know my credit was available, no apology no explanation. I went to use my credit, which was $9 (getting my actual money back would have cost me $8.99, so I would have gotten back a penny) however, using my credit for another item required another 5.99 shipping charge, so I actually only got $3 credit. Then when I received my item, it was missing a button, it's a blazer, so the button is necessary. I zoomed in on the picture from their website where they show your purchases and it only has one button, but no way for me to know their was another button hole. More money now to buy buttons, what a waste of time and money... go to your local thrift stores to shop second hand.
Hi Lynne, thanks for your feedback about your shopping experience and we are sorry to hear the blazer was not as described. Our polka dot promise guarantees 100% satisfaction. Please email support@thredup.com. Customer support can help get this sorted out.

I shipped them some really nice clothes. Some are brandy new or wore twice from decent brands. And those are not even accepted! Will never use their service again!
Hi Chris, we are really sorry to hear your disappointment with the unaccepted items. Our quality standards are extremely high with items to ensure our inventory is full of long-lasting items. We keep a detailed report of every single item we receive in our inventory and customer support is always available to review it with you. Please email support@thredup.com, we'd love to chat with you!

I sent a bag full of items. Just like most reviewers in here, they accepted a bunch (58% of my bag) and they said the upfront price I get is $15, which brings it to $10 after they deduct shipping. I had a brand new pair of Tom's and brand new crocs (even included original shoe boxes) amongst other new (with tags) and gently used items. This is worst than being robbed, it's just straight up insulting. I'd rather have donated my clothes to goodwill or another organization. Even animal shelters for the dogs to chew on these shoes would be better than this bs. This company scams people and gets rich doing so
Hi Anita, we are not in the business of scamming our customers but we are sorry you feel this way. We usually recommend using the payout estimator to get an idea of your earnings per item. If you'd like to have customer support review your bag details with you to get a better understanding of your earning please feel free to email support@thredup.com. We'd love to hear from you!

Honestly Thredup does have nice used clothing. I have ordered from them a couple of times when I first heard of them but I also waited to get discounts with my order. They sometimes have sales. The clothing I ordered was fine but you do have to pay attention to the picture provided. It's not all that, its really not worth the hype. I think the prices on the clothing are way overpriced. Honestly you could wait til the seasons are over to go shopping for "new" clothing at your local stores rather than spend the money on over priced "used" clothing at thredup. I would also suggest looking for used clothing stores nearby your town/city to avoid the shipping that thredup charges. In the end, I don't think you really get a good discount on their website.
Hi Sheri, we're happy to hear you have found some great items with ThredUP and we completely agree it's important to check the item deets. Though we may not be as cheap as some thrift stores everything is still 60-90% off retail price and you are bound to find a deal! We hope you decide to check us out again!

I had a lot of clothing that I was ready to get rid of and decided to try and make a little bit of money. I had a lot of name brand items including several modcloth items with tags still on. I sent a large bag of clothes to thredup.com and they kept 8 items. Not bad, right? WRONG. I ended up making -$5 from the transaction. That's right, I LOST money (I already had a credit and they take $9.99 out for the price of the bag). I checked all the items I kept and the 8 items total $121 dollars in revenue for Thredup. So... they made $121 and I lost $5. Total ripoff. I felt like I was robbed. I wish I'd just donated to Goodwill and known it was going to a worthy cause.
Hi Mallory, we are bummed to hear you feel you were ripped off. We promise we just want to provide great options for our customers to clean-out their unwanted items. We keep a detailed report on all items we receive and customer support can review this with you. If you'd like to chat please email support@thredup.com. We hope to hear from you soon!

Thredup kept 16 items I sent for resale and my payout was $1.68! They've changed their policies & gotten greedy with payouts. Furthermore, I sent the items on July 10th & my bag was finally processed on September 19th. What an insult. I'm deleting my account with thredup.
Hi Jennifer, we are sorry to hear your sentiments have changed. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our clean-out program. If you'd like to chat about any of our processes please feel free to email support@thredup.com.

I used thredUp about 2 years ago with good luck-- I remember sending in a bag about 1/2 full and got $25 or so within a couple weeks, which I thought was fair.
This time I am blown away by how terrible the experience was! I submitted a full bag with maternity clothes (some designer, some with tags on), hardly worn jeans, and business casual blouses. 2.5 MONTHS later... I got 38 CENTS! Which I didn't even actually get because of the $10.99 bag fee! What a scam. I am appalled.
Hi Nikki, we appreciate your feedback on your experience and were sorry to hear you are unhappy with your experience. We have made great improvements to the clean-out program but we are working hard to make the program better! Now we offer a free clean-out bag and a expedited bag option. We keep a detailed report on every item we receive, customer support is happy to review your bag details with you. Email support@thredup.com!

PROS: When they sent the wrong item-They said they were Chords - when they came- they were velvet- They immediately credited me and told me to keep the pants
CONS: I have friends that have sent their bags of clothes- Definitely not a good deal-DO NOT DO THIS-They rip you off and sell for a major increase
-Some jeans can be bought at TJ MAXX for same price or less-brand names
-They need to rethink their pricing
Hi Katy, Thanks for sharing your experience and we are happy to hear customer support resolved the discrepancy with your purchase. We want you to love both aspects of thredUP. If you like to chat about any of our processes please feel free to email support@thredup.com. We'd love to hear from you!

ThredUP is a SCAM!
Hi Pricilla, we promise we are not a scam, our goal is just provide the easiest way for customers to clean-out their closet of unwanted items. Sorry to hear you are unhappy with your experience. If you'd like to chat about your clean-out bag or any of processes please email support@thredup.com.
You might as well take your pile of clothes, $#*! on it, then light it on fire because that's how much they make you feel like your things are worth. Then they sell it for 5-8x the price on their website. 0/5
Oh no, this makes us sad to hear. We definitely don't think your clothes are worth that - it sounds like you have a lot of thoughts and concerns, and we'd love to hear them all and try to improve your thredUP experience. Please give us a shout at support@thredup.com.
I sent two enormously stuffed bags full of mall brands with tags, perfect cashmere sweaters, Calvin Klein wool coats, and a pair of never worn docs boots. I got zero credit, zero consignment, and my items are for sale on their site. Their charity is them.
Hey Jane, we don't list anything on our site that we don't payout for first, unless the items are consignment. It sounds like you might have had an issue, and we want to clear it up - drop support@thredup.com an email and we can investigate.
I wish we could give a zero. I sent in several items and all but one was sold on their sit and all of the items were listed as: This item is in excellent condition. You might mistake it for brand new!. They sold my pieces for a total of $65.94 and what did I get for the pieces I sent in? A whopping $5.80! My co-worker just told me she received her clean out kit from but I told her to use the bag for trash because that is how she will feel when she gets her payment. I spent the $5.80 and deleted my account. You are better off selling on Swap.com or having a garage sale.
Hey Trenniece, we're so sorry to hear your disappointment. It sounds like your expectations on payout were very different from what happened, and that never feels good. We payout one price and list it for another higher price because we need to pay our workers to steam, photograph, and list the items on the site before they're sold. If you'd like to chat through how we work, we'd love to hear from you: support@thredup.com
Aw I wish I had read these reviews before I sent them a bag of almost new expensive clothes! Same story as the others. It took them 2 months to process and I got about $5 for my items. Including two new $80 pairs of jeans with the tags on them. Insane. What a huge let down. Customer service was a joke too. Boo.
Hey Candace, we're so sorry to hear this. It's hard to sell clothes that have never been worn and get way less than you paid from them, but we urge sellers to remember that once purchased, they become "secondhand" items no matter what. Can we help you with anything or chat through our process? We have an awesome team ready to help with any and every problem, and we want to help improve your thredUP experience.
It took 2 months to process my clean out bag of 5 items. A maxi dress and blouse, worn once, excellent condition and a Chaps top, new with tags. I received an email this week telling me those items were all that were accepted and I would be receiving the whopping sum of $8.48! I wish I had just donated them to the local clothing center.
Never again, I won't sell or buy from ThredUp again! Live and learn!
Hey Kathy, we're sad to hear this was your thredUP experience and takeaway. Expecting to make a certain amount and then making way less never feels good. If you have feedback on the Payout Estimator, or would like to chat through the contents of your bag and why we do/don't accept certain items, let us know! We'd love to hear from you, it sounds like you have lots of constructive feedback.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
Hey Carolyn, we are happy to walk through the contents of your bag, and why each weren't accepted - shoot support@thredup.com a line, we look forward to hearing from you!
