ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Sent in a bag of clothes and there was no rhyme or reason as to what they accepted. Two dresses same style the one from Gap was worn once not accepted. The one from Old Navy worn many times is accepted. There were plenty of other examples that didn't make sense. How could you ever know what to send in. I think that they purposely reject a percentage of what you send in no matter brand or condition.
Also I don't understand why you have to log in just to browse. I'll be using other second hand sites.
Sent them a full bag of good quality clothes. It took them 3 months to process the bag. They accepted only a few pieces. Have no idea what happened to the rest of the items I sent them. Biggest mistake I ever made was sending them anything. At least if I had donated the items to charity myself, I would have received a tax-deductible receipt. Clothes gone! No receipt! What a letdown! What a rip-off!
Hey Gene - we really appreciate this feedback, and are working to reduce the wait time on bag processing. In terms of what happens to your unaccepted items, we either return them to you (if you opt for Return Assurance: http://bit.ly/2uQt2WS) or we upcycle them (http://bit.ly/2flaJDw). We offer a Donations option, in which you receive no payout but give all proceeds of your bag to the charity of your choice from our list - this also will give you a tax receipt. We hope this information helps answer some of your questions and concerns, and we'd love to chat through anything in more detail: support@thredup.com
This is the WORST! Sent a FULL bag for the first time. Took them 2 months to get to my bag to process. Received an email... finally, that they are not taking anything!
WHAT? ARE THEY FOR REAL? Just about everything in the bag was new. All name brands. Brand new mocs... NEVER WORN from Land's End. New cords... washed only and never worn... etc.
They are pathetic. I am sorry I sent them anything... would have rather given it away myself and never sent it!
DO NOT SEND THEM ANYTHING... they are thieves!
Stay away from ThredUP... It doesn't get any worse than this!
Hey JB - we're so sorry to hear your frustration. What we do and don't accept is partially based on the items we already have on site, so it fluctuates. We do offer Return Assurance, to get those unaccepted items returned to you, and definitely suggest this option: http://bit.ly/2uQt2WS. If you'd like to chat through anything at all, please don't hesitate to give us a shout at support@thredup.com
Terrible experience! Sent in a huge bag of clothing. Sixty-eight percent (according to them) were accepted. They were all name brand new or like new. And I can see what they're being sold for. I can see that several items have already sold, in fact. I got a little over $20. Sad! I have used other consignment-type sellers. I expect to make less than what these people are selling my clothes for, but this is ridiculous. DO NOT USE THIS SITE!
Hey Tina - we're so sorry to hear your disappointment on payout. Expecting to make one thing and making another never feels good. Were you able to check our payout estimator? We definitely suggest that as a way to get a gage on how much you might make if your items are accepted. We've also recently taken away the bag fee, which will help with payout amounts. We hope we haven't lost you forever.
I've seen them sell my clothes as "New With Tags" when they were several years old. Not new!
Watch out...
Hey Michelle - uh oh, that's odd! All of our "New With Tags" items have tags still attached. While they might be old in terms of when they were originally bought, they haven't been worn. There's also a possibility the item you're seeing is from a different seller, but happens to be the same item as yours. We're all human though and could have made a mistake - if you think that's the case, please reach out to us at support@thredup.com so we can help fix, thank you!
Horrible. I have done this type of thing before with decent results. I bought an item from here so thought I would try the sales side. I carefully prepped & looked over items and donated any that weren't in excellent shape, figured I would miss a couple of things just human error. I ran the estimate on their website to see if it would be worth it & estimated about $30 or so. I got less than $9. All my WH|BM jeans were rejected for fading. $90 jeans, distressed style, rejected for fading... really? Some items popped into consignment so they don't have to pay me. Some rejected as "surplus". 14 items sold a few still sitting in "consignment" (a t-shirt sold for $8, I got. 40 for it). Considering the time to wash, prep, pack and ship. I should have just taken the tax write off, at least it would be helpful. For $9, I could have sold in a yard sale. Don't waste your effort, it's a rip off. Also, there were over a month late processing the bag so they had it over 2 months before I even heard from them. When I contacted them to find out what happened to all my items I was dismissed by the CS agent. He later responded and claimed a family emergency after I dinged the service, but he made no mention of that when he dismissed me from the CS chat.
Hi Teri,
Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to hear your expectations did not meet your experience. Our merchandisers are meticulous when it comes to selecting items to ensure they meet our high quality standards. We are behind in processing clean-out bags & definitely sounds like we may have dropped the ball when it comes to your overall clean-out experience. We'd like to see what we can do to turn your experience around, please email support@thredup.com.

I sent a whole big bag of new clothing with some tags on them, all of which name brands. And what I got was a 35 cent balance after they processed the bag and accepted 14 of my items. Didn't look that closely, but one of the items they accepted, which was a tank top, they are charge 13.99 for it! If this is not sheer robbery, I dunno what is. I guess they just scam all the first time users cuz I know for a fact nobody is dumb enough to go back to them.
Never sell or buy from them!
Hi Sandra, sorry you had a negative experience with us. We usually recommend using the payout estimator to get an idea of your earning prior to sending in a bag. Please email support@thredup.com, one of our Support team members can walk you through the contents in your clean out bag to explain what happened.

I have sent Hundreds of accesories, clothes but i haven't got a penny from them.
Never send your stuff to them, I'm never gonna come back here again.
Hi Rashmitha,
Thanks for reaching out. We were able to locate your account but we don't see that you have sent out a clean-out bag. It may be under a different email address but customer support can assist you with finding your clean-out bag and ensuring you receive your earnings. Please email support@thredup.com.

Thred up are robbing people of their unwanted clothing. I sent in name brand clothing, nice sweaters and suits, suit jackets, I know more than 3 items were usable because I take good care of my clothing. Do you know for a whole bag of clothing I received a credit for $1.55. What a rip off. Will never use them again, or shop there even with the 40% off. Items are regularly priced online and they barely give a return to those who provide clothing for their sales.
Hi Dee,
Sorry to hear you are not happy with your clean-out experience. Every item we receive is put through a thorough inspection - this helps ensure whomever loves it after you is getting a quality secondhand item. We keep a detailed report on every single item sent in, we 'd be happy to have customer support review the contents of your bag with you. Please email support@thredup.com. We hope to hear from you! :)
I sent in 18 items, all like new and some with tags still on them. I received less than $14 for the entire bag! One pair of shoes I sent was never worn and I paid $49 for them! I saw one of my items sell for $24.99! This is a rip off and I will never use them again!
Hi Lynne, we promise we are not a rip-off! We just want to provide a convenient way for our customers to clean out their closet, we are sorry to hear you feel that way. Customer support can provide details on your clean-out bag and confirm what happened. Please email support@thredup.com.

I packed a bag full of almost new items. Some had tags. They accepted 8 items. I got a check for $18.05. One of the items was a couture cream blouse that I paid $175 for. I thought I would at least get 5 bucks for it! Another item they accepted was brand new lucky slides. If you don't care and just want to clean out your closet. It is no hassle, ship it and you'll get a $10 check for your time. Ebay resell or consignment will be more of a hassle but you will get more if you have good stuff. Hopefully, they send all of the rejects to hurricane victims. Shopping online for clothing is great. Selling SUCKS!
You will do much better selling your used clothing at a yard sale, on eBay, at your local consignment store - ANYWHERE BUT THREDUP. Such a rip off!
After reviewing what they accept, I carefully chose items surely to be accepted. After taking nearly 6 weeks to process, I found that my barely worn, label clothing and shoes, were worth a mere $37. Of the nearly 30 items I sent, only 14 items were accepted. I should have turned my clothing over to a local charity. Do not consider this online consignment site. You've been warned. They really deserve ZERO stars.
I am so upset that I did Thred Up. I would have been better off donating the clothes to someone in need or trying to sell them at a local consignment. I sent a very large full bag of nice Maternity clothes worn a few times during my pregnancy (mostly work like clothes, blouses, dresses), 22 items in total well worth over $500. They took 2 months to process and only gave me $18. I check often and of those 22 items they have already sold more than half of them for $11+ each item. Such a rip off. They take your nice clothes telling you they will compensate you fairly for what they will get and then turn around and sell them for a very large profit to them. Shame on them!
I sent out 3 large bags of my daughter's clothing from Gymboree, Disney, Hannah Anderson in GOOD CONDITION worth over $5000. 00+++... after 2 months they gave me only $3.00... SUPER DISAPPOINTED!
All over the site they are begging for plus sizes to resell. A good friend drops lots of weight, I gather over 20 items of her barely worn clothes, all good brand names. Two pairs of Ralph Lauren jeans with tags still attached. Sent to Duluth. They accepted 8 items, (not the jeans) and I got $3 for the effort. In the past I felt like I was getting more money for the items. Now (and I have had this feeling before) I feel that the sorters are keeping things they like. Maybe as a seller sign up for the items being returned, but then you would end up with minus dollars in this case! Now they are starting to request costume jewelry. No way! That would be so easy to steal.
Ridiculous. They take four items and say they are worth $11 total for all but then sell EACH item for over $30 each. Don't waste your time. Horrible resaler. Waste of time.
Please be warned. DO NOT SELL to Thred UP. Buy all you want but DO NOT SELL. They give you pennies on the dollar and charge mega fees. My experience as a seller was horrible. I am not bitter... lesson learned. I just want to warn fellow peeps. THIS IS NOT A GOOD COMPANY TO SELL TO. Total rip off! I would give a zero if I could.
When buying clothes from Thread Up, know that what you see is not what you get. I tried to sell an entire bag of mostly designer brands to them based on the brands I saw they accepted on their website and I was incredibly disappointed. First off, the bag itself is $10 which is ridiculous. It took this website 3 FULL MONTHS to review my bag. Then, they will appraise your clothing, even if it still has tags, as worth next to nothing. Basically, don't expect anything more after you send your bag in than a thank you for your donation and maybe $5 in your account. Better off at Plato's closet or donating them.
Sold my clothes using this app. Sold 10 items for about $15 and all I got was $5. Would never use their service or recommend them. Better donate to charity.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
Hey Lee, we're sorry about your confusion upon sending in, and to hear your disappointment. What we accept/don't accept is based on supply and demand; if we already have X number of one item on our site, we are less likely to accept another. It can be tricky to guess what will be accepted and what won't, so we definitely suggest Return Assurance if you'd like your unaccepted items returned to you to sell elsewhere. We have no percentage we *have* to reject, though! That we can assure you of. We ask for you to sign up so we can customize your shopping experience - we have so much inventory it would be way too overwhelming to show it all at once to every single person. You can unsubscribe at any time!
