ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Please dont send anything to thredup, they will take your clothes and make money for theirs self. There is a lot they dont explain to you, I sent 20 pieces of clothes and was credited 10 dollars to use to buy from them. I saw all my pieces and the amount it was sold for, it was more. Terrible decision for me, I should have investigated more about this company.
Ive been a customer since December 2015. I use to love the clothes as they were quality brands and the measurements and conditions stated were accurate. The pricing was also fair and so competitive that I stopped shopping at regular stores. However in the past year or so their prices have increased, items are wrongly priced (and when drawn to their attention they just tell you they will look into it but they never make corrections), item sizing and descriptions have been way off, brands now include Wal-Mart and low quality brands, shipping has been a mess, and most recently they started charging a restocking fee of 1.99 per item. Due to their lack of quality and misinformation, I have found myself returning more items, and now that they are charging fees for restocking, there is no point in the free shipping or return for store credit. Every new policy they have implemented has made me grow less enthusiastic about shopping with Thredup. I guess Ill be returning to TJ Maxx and Ross and the other chains as well as using Poshmark and other online options!
Hi Jennifer. We're continuing to grow and improve our services, so we appreciate your feedback. As our goal is to provide access to the widest variety of secondhand pieces, we do need to test and apply certain fees or changes to our services. We do have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way, and we hope you choose to shop with us again down the line.
While I understand shipping and processing items is not free for the company, the new restocking fee makes buying items from this site not worth the money (unless they are final sale items already). Over the past two years, ThredUp had replaced almost all of my clothes shopping, and I was very happy with their services. However, they've now pretty much lost me as a customer with this new restocking fee and other policies. When I asked for a recent restocking fee to be waived on an order made before the items were marked as requiring a restocking fee, the response I got from customer service was "nobody can do that." ThredUp is a business; managers can do almost anything. This is indicative of declining customer service quality. This is especially disappointing as I've received great customer service in the past! I once forgot to include an item for return in the box I mailed. When I contacted the company asking what to do, they told me to keep the item (and do with it what I pleased) and still gave me a refund for it. That's what customer service should be! I hope their business suffers with their new policy changes, driving them to return to their earlier practices.
Hi Stephanie. Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. Our goal is to give customers access to the widest variety of secondhand pieces at the most affordable prices imaginable. To keep our prices low, we do need to apply certain fees to our services. The restocking fee would not be applied to items that were ordered before the restocking fee was noted on your account. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way.
I experienced my first and last selling experience on Thred Up. After waiting a month for my bag to be processed... they approved 3 items and I earned $2.83?!?! So I dont even make $3 and they turn around and make 15 times that!?!? The majority of my items were placed on consignment. The earning percentages are shocking and downright criminal. I earned 0.60 when they sold my Excellent like new Michael Stars shirt for $12. Are you kidding me?!?!? Highway robbery! Never again! DO NOT SELL ITEMS on this site.
Hi Donna! Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. In the interest of transparency, we provide our sellers with various payout tools including a calculator (http://bit.ly/2mSGebJ) and percentage chart (http://bit.ly/2LxpchU), to offer an estimate of what you will be earning for your items. If you have any questions regarding this breakdown, you are always welcome to reach out to our support team for clarification.
I had a couple great experiences buying clothes from Thredup. Then, things started to decline. I bought a pair of "Toms" brand sunglasses among other things. They arrived with zero branding on them and were scratched and scuffed. How did ThredUp know they were Toms brand in the first place? I missed the return deadline so sent them in with some items to sell, figured I'd get a small % back at least. Nope! What was good enough to sell the first time they did not accept back. Smells fishy.
It got worse. I filled a bag to the brim with gorgeous items, including Frye boots ($250 retail new) in great condition and a designer dress. The boots 'did not meet standards' and I made ~$14 off a bag worth much more. Like everyone else here I felt ripped off.
The buying experience has also gone down the tubes. There are still some good deals, but that's the minority. Nike workout shorts that retail for $30, can find on sale new for $15, used and sweat on by someones undercarriage, $22 on ThredUp. Seriously? There's also a New Balance baseball cap for 29.99 that 'retailed for over $70'! What a joke. Also people like to horde items in their carts for weeks at a time. I won't be using this site, for buying or selling, ever again. Instead, my clothes and dollars will stay local at reputable businesses and charities.
Hi Jamie. We apologize your clean out experience did not go as expected. We have sent you a private message to review these concerns further.
I started using Thredup two years ago and was thrilled with the low prices, exceptional return policy, and environmentally friendly attitude toward buying second hand. Since then I've noticed the prices steadily climbing, but the large variety and return policy kept me interested.
A couple months ago I filled my first "cleanout bag" after putting it off because of other poor reviews of the service. I had figured since there were just a couple high priced items I felt like I could get a decent amount for based on their payout estimators I might as well try it, BIG MISTAKE! One new with tags item they said retailed for $650 they gave me $68 for and had marked it $0.01 below their next payout level. Not to mention, about a month after it was listed they added a red 149.99 with a line through it as though they had marked down the price LYING TO CUSTOMERS to make them think it was on sale!
After my less than idea selling experience, I had decided to just stick to buying from them. However, over the last few weeks specifically their prices have been climbing drastically and today I actually found out they now have a $1.99 restocking fee for items below $50. As a college student on a budget, their rising prices had already been starting to deter me from making purchases and as only a one or two items I have ever purchased from them are over $50 and I am guilty of returning many items and a $1.99 charge on every returned item would quickly add up. I think it is very important to be able to return items in part due to the fact that they are used and it is hard to tell from the pictures provided the exact condition of the item, not to mention fit as it is no longer standard based on the brand because of stretching and shrinking! This has been the final straw for me. I am rather disappointed to say Thredup will no longer receive any business from me!
As an added note, I have always been suspicious of what they do with the unexcepted clothing that is not sent back to the seller using "assurance." They have recently added a "rejects" tab to their menu where, no joke, they sell the rejected items they didn't pay people for, this is a deceitful company built by money hungry fiends. Even if some of the profits go to charity, this is dishonest. If people are not being paid for the items all profits should be donated!
Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. In the interest of transparency, we provide our sellers with various payout tools including a calculator and percentage chart, to offer an estimate of what you will be earning for your items. If you have any questions regarding this breakdown, you are always welcome to reach out to our team for clarification. Regarding restocking fees, in order to maintain low prices and continue to offer a huge selection of high-quality secondhand styles, returned items may be subject to a restocking fee. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way.
Lastly, our Reject Rescue is a program intended to reduce clothing waste on items that would otherwise be disposed of. ThredUP donates a portion of every apparel Reject box sold to one of our existing charity partners. We hope this information is helpful. Enjoy the rest of your day.
Do not try to sell your clothes to ThredUp. The first bag I sent was all children's clothes, some that had been handed down once. They accepted all if and resold them. I am sure not every piece was in pristine condition (kids are not neat). The second bag I sent was full of items from my own closet. One of the items was an unworn, tags on, $300 Club Monaco cocktail dress in the original garment bag. Not one of the items was accepted for selling. I asked about the Club Monaco dress and was told there was a stain on it. I pushed back saying that was impossible as it had never been worn and had only been taken out of the bag once in two years. They refused provide evidence of the alleged stain. I will never sell anything through them again. You are better off selling items, especially high end ones, on your own.
Hello Rebecca,
Thank you for taking the time to provide this information. We can not guarantee the acceptance of every item sent to our facility, including New With Tags items.
https://thredup.helpshift.com/a/thredup/?s=selling&f=acceptance-and-quality-standards&l=en
It is not our policy to provide photographs of rejected items. However, we do keep a detailed account of why items were rejected. Our processors use studio lighting to determine the quality and condition of every single item sent to us, often times seeing imperfections that might otherwise be overlooked. We hope this information is helpful. Enjoy the rest of your day.
Don't be fooled that ThredUp will donate those items they deem unacceptable - Noooo, they sell them as "reject boxes". So they pay the sellers nothing, and yet still sell the items. I've sent in numerous bags, and at first the payout was reasonable, then they started "losing" brand new items (I keep a list of what was in each bag). Now they accept almost nothing, and the payout is pathetic, while their prices keep rising. I'd go somewhere else. And their customer service is awful.
Thank you for taking the time to express this. We understand your concerns about the rejected items from your bag and would be happy to provide some clarification. Please be assured that our processors never reject items from a Clean Out Bag with the intention of selling them through our Rejects shop. If an item is in acceptable condition, we want to list if for sale on our site so we can award credits to our sellers and so we can give our customers more pieces to shop from.
We have sent you a private message contain detailed information about bag #B244N-T3JYF. Hope this information helps.
I have been buying from this site since they started-always loved buying. Sold sometimes too but not nearly as often as I buy. I honestly have spent thousands of dollars. I always felt that the good points outweighed the bad-not anymore. I place large orders that often come in large boxes spread out over a couple of days. I have learned to carefully check what is packed as it hasn't always been accurate. I spent the July 4th weekend shopping and was shocked when my order started coming in. Some items clearly belonging in the garbage due to excessive wear-not a problem I return for store credit that I eventually spend-but inconvenient. This time however I had extreme difficulty checking the packing accuracy. Someone had to help me and it took well over an hour. It seems as if they pull bits and pieces from multiple orders and pack them together-this is done to cut shipping costs I am sure-and that's okay. What shocked me is that is several instances they charged me separate shipping charges then shipped the items together anyway. In other words they threw a big mess of mixed up orders into one box and then charged me separate shipping charges-one charge for each order in the box. I have NEVER received such a mess in the mail in my life very annoying, but then to have duplicate charges placed on my card? Tried to contact customer service-this takes a long time. After 6 emails between us in total-finally an insincere apology. Whatever-I deleted the account. On the bright side I will be saving money. Talk about penny wise and pound foolish
Hello Darlene,
Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. Items are sometimes shipped from multiple distribution centers, simply because we store our inventory at multiple facilities, due to capacity. You should never be charged for those multiple shipments, on one order. You are only charged the flat rate shipping, which is $5.99. We sincerely apologize if our Customer Service responded without issuing reassurance. Please let us know if there is anything else we may assist you with and we are happy to do so.
I like the selection of items, and have been a customer for years. Lately there have had some erratic changes. The CEO sent out an email in January apologizing for the drop in service, and the website seems to keep rolling downhill. Mailing your returns is only free if you choose store credit, and now there is a new $2 per item restocking fee. The restocking fee is mentioned on the website but not the app. If you want to return one item and get your money returned to your card it will cost a minimum of $11. They've started shipping items from several locations, meaning multiple small packages and longer wait times. Pagination on the website is a mess, with items appearing a disappearing. Measurements on clothing lengths seem inconsistent. Buying used clothes is always something of a gamble because of condition issues, and adding the punishment of fees for returning items of varying quality has finally made me reconsider shopping here.
Hi Jane,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. In order to maintain low prices and continue to offer a huge selection of high-quality secondhand styles, returned items may be subject to a restocking fee. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way.
Our Customer Service team is here to help with any shopping questions you may have before you make your purchase. After all, it's our mission for you to find the perfect pieces for your closet. It would be my pleasure to help you with any questions you may have about items in our shop, so don’t hesitate to ask. Items are sent from several distribution centers because of the high quantity of inventory that we have. It's a good thing! We try our best to accept as many items as we can from our amazing sellers, allow us to continue and fulfill our mission of clothing sustainability. There are known issues on our website that our web developers are working really hard to update and fix. It's part of the growing process. Hope this information helps.
I was very pleased with my first clean out kit so much so I sent a second. I am convinced they hook you with the first giving me cash for my sub par items. The second bag resulted in a very small payout but I know the quality of items I sent were just as good as the first. They accepted a pair of no name leggings called them reebok and jacked up the price. I believe they are selling my "not selected items" they are clearly not responsibly donating my coach and marc jacobs bags. Scam artists just trying to make a quick buck.
Hello Patrice,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are sorry to hear that this was your experience. We can not guarantee the acceptance of every item that is sent to our facility. If an item is improperly listed, we encourage you to reach out to us and provide item details, so our team can make the necessary adjustments. If you wish to receive your rejected items back, we recommend Return Assurance on bags containing items valuable to you. This feature is made available on our website at clean out kit check out. Thank you.
I am greatly disappointed with this company. At first, I was thrilled to find a place where I could buy designer clothes at a discount, I spent over $300, assuming that this is a quality, honest company. The first item to arrive, a dress listed as in "excellent condition, you may mistake it for brand new" had THREE oil stains on the front. This could not have been accidentally missed. When I give my clothes to goodwill, I don't give stained clothes -- no one wants to wear stained clothes, let alone pay $56 for it. It is VERY hard to get in touch with customer service, no phone number, and only after searching FAQ did I find an e-mail. I have yet to hear back from them, but this is absolutely unacceptable. I refuse to pay a $10 re-stocking fee for their blatant lie regarding the condition of a dress. I haven't received my other items yet, and if I could get in touch with someone from customer service I would cancel my entire order. I was also planning on selling with them, but after this experience (and reading these reviews) I will be going to my local consignment shop.
Hi Natalie,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are sorry to hear that this was your experience. We can assure you that a Customer Service agent will assist you shortly. If you would like to, please send us a private message with your account email and Order information in which this stained garment arrived. We are more than happy to assist you with a resolution. Looking forward to your reply.
I've sent in a huge bag of clothes to consign and that experience has been quite bad (I saw clothes and a necklace on the site that I KNOW were mine, but that weren't itemized in my account. When I inquired about this, I was told that they weren't mine and that they all came from multiple sellers and that my items were "noticeably pilled" - which they absolutely weren't... I'm not just saying that because I'm disgruntled, I hardly ever wore the items I sent in, which is why I sent them in - the excuse that they have high standards doesn't fly when they accept clothes with stains, missing buttons, and snags, soooo... One of the tops I sent in was an xxs, unique looking shirt, and I have a really hard time believing that another xxs in that shirt was sent in at the same time and was found to be acceptable and mine wasn't)... Bottom line, as a seller, I'd like to give them zero stars because that all seems super shady and customer service wasn't cool about it. Based on other reviews, I see I'm not the only one who was duped.
Thank you for your review Katherine. We have sent you a private message to review this further.
So I was cleaning out my closet and a friend told me about selling online and I found thredup in a search engine and decided to try it. I got the clean out bags within days and filled them up with some new with tags and other gently used items then mailed them back. I waited and waited and waited and no response. So I emailed thred up in the 3rd week of June because I sent my bags off Memorial day weekend. Finally on the 29th I was told they had the bags and I'd get a reply se by July 9th or 11th so I patiently waited. On the 12th when I still had not heard anything I sent an email only to be told I'd get $10 After my items sold! Are you kidding me?
Give me Poshmark, Mercari or Ebay at least they are not a rip off like this site is. Big Disaster.
Thank you for your review Annie. We have sent you a private message to review this further.
After reading the comments Im afraid to send my bag of brand name items. Guess Ill use Ebay instead. I may try to buy something...
Hi Dyanne,
We never want our seller's to feel this way. You can always send us a message with any questions or concerns you might have and we are more than happy to offer details and clarification. We want to ensure your seller's experience is a great one for you! :)
They are crooks, they will put finale sale on items and lie about the quality but then you are not able to return any of the items. I also mailed in some very high quality items over $2000 worth of items. I received $65 for my bag and many of the items I sent in, that I saw posted on their website, they did not even pay me for. Instead, they lied and said the items were not up to their standards. That is funny to me because I have bought a final sale item that was in terrible condition. Be aware and save your time and money!!!!!
Thank you for your review Melissa. We have sent you a private message to review this further.
I purchased from Thredup twice and was pleased with the purchases and process. Now the sizing of items seem incorrect and inconsistent so it's hard to know what will fit. 24" chest is considered Large? Its website shows items numerous times and shows you a different page than what originally pops up. Very frustrating!
I sent two clean-out bags: one for donations and one for selling. The bag for selling contained dresses that were gently used, clean, current style with labels. However, these items did not show up on the site. Didn't receive any information as to what happened to them. It was fun shopping on the site but will because of inconsistency and increased pricing and costs.
Thank you for your review Connie. We have sent you a private message to review this further.
I sent in 3 items, 2 of which I knew would not be worth much. The 3rd item, however, was a beautiful B. Makowsky bag, in good or even great condition and I got nothing. Estimated payout was $20 - $40, and I got NOTHING! DO NOT SEND YOUR ITEMS TO THESE THEIVES! I hope one of you gets to enjoy my stolen purse as much as i did.
Thank you for your review Valerie. We have sent you a private message to review this further.
If you're wondering where your rejected clothes went, they're probably in a goody box. Not finding much on the site and in need of some cute reasonably-priced summer items, I gave the brief description of my style, needs, size, etc. Obviously, these folks don't know me, but I figured the odds were okay that there would be a few items I'd keep. It must have taken a lot of effort on the part of my "stylist" to assemble the most horrible, ugly, outdated and cheap collection he/she could manage. It is insulting, and this is probably the stuff they "stole" from you previous reviewers. When I say I'd do better at Goodwill, I am dead serious. Plus, the prices listed were outrageous for such junk - no wonder they wouldn't put them online. Adding insult to injury, I just sent in a bag myself, guessing that won't go well. At this point I'll just unsubscribe and move on.
Thank you for your review Noelle. We have sent you a private message to review this further.
Threadup has changed their website. It is so terrible that you can't even contact them about it. I used to shop here... not anymore.
Hi Barbara, thanks for your review. You can find information on how to contact our customer service team on our FAQ page here: https://thredup.helpshift.com/a/thredup/?s=frequently-asked-questions&f=how-do-i-contact-customer-support&l=en.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
