ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Sent 24 (16 New with tags and 8 once or never worn) dresses. $185 avg retail each - 8 'mother of the bride', little black, floor length and cocktail dresses. 2 were Ralph Lauren.
100% were "not accepted". Even though I'd paid to have unaccepted items returned - but apparently, if 100% are not accepted, then 0% of the items get returned. If they were to be donated or "responsibly up-cycled" why wasn't I given the choice? If unacceptability is based on the designer name - especially high end dresses in comparison to lower end brands that are accepted on Thredup - like the GAP, then their site needs more transparency. Customer service access (no phone or email given in Contact Us) is deplorable. It took 10 minutes of time just to access a Chat - which tells you it's offline unless open from 7:00AM - 11:00AM (yep, only 4 hours a day) pacific coast time. I contacted Chat, and was told that answers were with a different department, and they would get back to me via email by end of today (I guess to respond between 7-11 tomorrow). I can only assume that there will be no accountability and reasons justifying the confiscation of my 24 (16 NWT dresses). Poor customer service, poor human relations, poor policies, no ability to resolve anything once your clean-out bag is shipped, minimal transparency, and thousands of unhappy customer reviews that I should have read before I got involved. Stress I didn't need, time that I wasted... and where the heck did all my dresses go? Too bad zero stars is not an option.
I've sent many items brand new with tags and they said they were too out of style. (from Macys, Noordstrom... etc) the ones they kept still had price tags of 86.00 plus... I got 5.00
If you buy... you get a great deal I guess. If you sale... research first or like me... you will have lost a lot of money using this company.
Hi Cynthia. We appreciate your review. We have sent you a private message to go over these concerns further.
My first two experiences with ThredUp were good. I recommended the site to several people. I have been thoughtful and discriminating with what I send. Note I had gotten an 80-60% acceptance rate. Somehow one of my bags was thought to be intended for donations. I am not sure how that happened, but when the mistake was made I was given $60 credit. I was pleased with the way the company handled the mistake.
First, I noticed that my items were being displayed with inaccurate descriptions. Then I ordered a pair of shoes that I was really looking forward to and they had mislabeled as them as being medium width when they were narrow.
In my last bag I sent dresses with tags, and a pair of shoes that had never been worn out of my house, items I was sure would be accepted. And I was given credit for pretty much everything else in the bag.
That is when I started looking for reviews and found that I was not alone in noticing the declining effort put into what started as a great concept. I believe they have gotten sloppy and possibly found another way of making money by forwarding on quality items.
Better ways to save money could be found by sending surveys to customers to determine ways of cutting costs that would not compromise quality but help to improve service, such as no more fancy boxes and tissue paper.
Hi Vanessa. Thank you for your review. We have sent you a private message to follow up on these concerns.
It is such poor business not allowing customers to apply discount codes or store credits to Auto By Orders. Unbelievable!
We appreciate your feedback Din. As we continue to expand the auto-buy program, we hope to add this feature.
I feel like they stole my clothes. I sent three bags, so full I could barely close them. At least half of the items were new with tags, and shoes new in the box. My payout? $16.00! DO NOT USE EVER!
Hi Laura. We apologize your clean out experience did not go as expected. We have sent you a private message to review these concerns further.
I sent them 4 new items with shopping tags and 1 in almost new condition. I did it because of the article in Bottom Line which promoted them. I received a useless gift card for $11.50.
It's real rip off.
Hi A A. Thanks for your review. We have sent you a private message to review these concerns further.
SOLD new with tags merchandise as used or didn't sell at all, just kept. Kept shoes worn once, undervalues everything so they don't have to pay out. When questioned, they never replied.
Hi Denise. We apologize your experience did not go as expected. We have sent you a private message to review these concerns further.
I thought I would try this company since it has free returns. I bought 3 XL shirts from this company. I had to return 2 because they looked/fit like a child's XL.
The same day I selected to return them. I was fully expecting a shipping label, I selected a box that said I could print the label myself. I had to email in to customer service to ask when my shipping label would come. That is when Sam told me that I had to return it myself. SUCH A RIP OFF! So I had to pay $5.99 for shipping and then to return ship it was $8.75.
Hi Jennifer. Thank you for your review. We have sent you a private message and are happy to review these concerns further.
I like the idea of ThredUp but it has to be easy to make returns. You just can't know for sure how something will fit until you try it on. I'm okay with only having free shipping if you get store credit, but the $2 PER ITEM restocking fee is absurd. Most of my items cost less than $10 (some only $3.20) so even if it doesn't fit returning it seems like a waste. Now I have clothes I don't want. I thought I was spending $60 for seven items; now it's really $60 for the three items I actually want to keep (C9 a sports bra, casual Old Navy dress, and Old Navy active tee - no high dollar brands). THREDUP IS TOO EXPENSIVE. Buy new unless they do away with their restocking fee; I would have saved money.
Hi Kristen. Thanks for your review and we apologize your experience did not go as expected. We hope you choose to shop with us again down the line.
Thredup is the WORST company ever. How do I count the ways! My last bag took forever to process. On top of. That I sent in a brand new never used pair of Kate Spade sandles and a Brand New never used Dooney and Bourke tote. I was told these items did not meet their quality standards. How crazy is that! Contacted them via email and was sent back generated bull crap response they would look into this. No response yet after almost a week. To top that off... I just received a pair of Kate Spade sunglasses that were discribec as excellent condition... May mistake for new. What a joke! They are BROKEN! Their so called experts don't know the difference between new items and broken items. The payouts are ridiculous. They will not release my payment even though it has been over the fourteen day period. There's no way I will put that money back into such a rip off company. If you vaule your items... especially high end items... DO NOT send them to thredup! Donate them for a tax write-off or sell via garage sale. Either way you'll come out ahead and not be taken by this unreptable company!
Hi Karen, thanks for your review. We have sent you a private message to address your concerns further.
I thought this would be a great way to make a little money back on items that i had spent good money on but never wore or didn't fit. Sent in many nice items, 2 brand new pair of shoes and articles of clothing that were new with tags and received 15.60 payout. I have one item in consignment that i could make a whopping. 60 cents from when it sells because it's out of season. Just one of the pair of shoes that i sent in they are selling for nearly $50. Clearly a ripoff for sellers. There is no mention where the "unaccepted" things go and i wouldn't be surprised if they sell those items too. If i had know the payout would be so insulting, i would have sold the items myself. I truly feel ripped off and won't be using this site to buy or sell again.
Hi Angie. Thank you for your review. We are happy to review these concerns further and have sent you a private message.
After sending my bag of mostly NEW, name brand items, along with a pair of BRAND NEW Dr. Scholls sandals, I was issued a payout of $1.95!
Yes, that's correct ONE dollar and Ninetyfive cents!
This site needs to be SHUT DOWN. I plan on reporting them to all the various applicable agencies that can stop this appalling SCAM.
Hi Lori. Thanks for your review. We have sent you a private message to review these clean out concerns further.
ThredUP was never great for sellers, but generally ok for buyers. Recently, the purchasing experience has really gone downhill. ThredUP has always been plagued by poor/inaccurate item descriptions such as size and measurement errors, wrong color descriptions, and general mistakes such as shirts being described as dresses and vice versa. (If they only focused on fixing these problems, their returns rate and costs would surely decrease.) Add to that prices on some items that are higher than new retail, damaged goods trying to be passed for "excellent condition," (again driving up return rate and costs) and just a lot more junk for sale on the site. These issues have increased dramatically over the last few months as it seems like ThredUP has grown took quickly for its own good. Recently I returned white shirts from two different orders which were well worn and discolored from age and improper washing. Hard to see in the item listing photo, but real disappointments in person. One had small dark pilling on it and a hole. Totally unacceptable. Both were listed as "excellent condition." Another item ordered was described as "excellent condition" yet upon receipt had about a quarter of the beadwork missing and tiny loose threads everywhere from the missing beading. How are these things missed? Add to this a credibility problem and horrible customer service. At the beginning of June, ThredUP seemingly overnight rolled out a restocking charge that was listed on item description pages. AFTER the roll out, the policy was added to their web site "frequently asked questions" section. Apparently, it was PR fail because it disappeared as quickly as it came but, in it's place, was yet another round of significant overnight price hikes. Additionally, ThredUP previously led sellers to believe that goods sent in, but not accepted for sale or consignment, were donated. This is inaccurate. ThredUP pays sellers nothing for these items yet the website states ThredUP sells these items to customers as part of their Rejects program and sells them to third party partners. No donating here. The only thing that has improved the last few months has been the shipping. Fedex appears to be the new shipping partner and shipping delays have decreased significantly.
The good: great web site. Easy to navigate. Great concept.
The bad (as a buyer) Higher than new prices on some items. Inaccurate descriptions of materials, measurements, color and even item type. Processing and shipping is very slow. Recently they instituted a restocking fee for some items. The whole roll-out of that concept has been shady. First there was no restocking fee, then overnight items in my cart had restocking fees added. Looks like they also updated their terms on the website just this week (after the restocking fee roll out) to add in information about restocking fees. How shady is that!
Selling: There really are no positives for sellers. Many negatives, however. Lengthy delays in bag processing times. Very poor payouts. Current styles and top brands that are like new or new with tags are not accepted yet you can find poor quality junk for sale on the web site. Read on their website what they do with things they don't accept. Many think these items are donated. They are not. They are sold by Thred Up to "third party partners" to make money. If you do send in items and they are accepted, make sure they actually show up for sale on the web site In my case, two of my accepted for consignment items are not listed on the website for sale anywhere. Have searched and searched - can't find them. (One item is improperly described when I look at it under "My Selling History" - tried to get that fixed too but no response.) Email customer service and you will not get anything beyond an auto generated response that they are backlogged. Received an email from Kathleen Weng, VP of Merchandising, Subject: "Tell Us What You Really Think" after my clean out bag was processed. She asked for feedback by return email. Guess what, I tried to send her feedback but email to her with feedback was returned "delivery failed - will not continue trying" by the Thred Up server. This is not the way to do business and gain consumer confidence.
Wish i could rate zero stars! Who sends an order with 5 items in 5 different shipments with 5 different tracking numbers? Really who? To make matters worse, the shipping took almost 3 weeks and i haven't received any of the order they claimed was delivered. Never buying on thredup again. Save yourself the headache. It's not worth it.
Hi Didi. We appreciate your review and feedback. We apologize your experience did not go as expected, and we hope you choose to shop with us again down the line.
Really disappointed when I sent a large bag of clothing in, and they accepted 10 items - all of which sold - but I received $8 in return. Even with the understandable fee for shipping, each individual piece was sold for around $10 so I feel pretty ripped off. Would have been nice if there had been any indication beforehand that this is basically the same as donating to a local thrift store for free.
Hi Lucy. Thanks for your review. We have sent you a private message to review these concerns further.
I was totally disappointed in my first experience with this company. I sent in several items, two new with tags on, one a CABI shirt that was over $50.00. They "awarded" me $7.15 for that and a "sleeveless" blouse which I never sent to them. I would avoid doing business with this company.
Hi Judith. Thanks for your review. We have sent you a private message and are happy to provide additional information about your recent clean out.
I sent in fine clothes and they gave me $8. Terrible terrible. I would have gotten more out of the transaction if I'd donated the clothes myself. Who knows what they actually do with the clothes. Dishonest. Do not send them anything.
Hi Chris. Thank you for your review. We'd like to address your concerns further and provide additional information about our payout structure. We have sent you a private message.
I loved this store. Until I had a problem. I won't shop here. Customer service is nonexistent. Clicking on "customer service" gets you only a noninteractive list of issues. Not helpful at all. No where to go after that. I placed a large order, having spent quite a while selecting items. My order was accepted. And then, in a few hours, cancelled. No explanation at all. "Your order was cancelled" period. No recourse. No explanation. I sent an email asking the reason for the cancellation. No response at all. Wow. That's cold. I won't waste my time with this store again.
Hi Kathy. Thank you for your review. We have referenced your recent email, and show that a customer service agent has followed up with you on the matter.
If you are a buyer, you will probably like thredUp, but as a seller I am completely insulted. I sent my polka dot bag full of mostly Anthropologie items, a pair of Chucks (which they didn't accept) and a few other boutique items. After my bag was processed about a MONTH later, I get an email that my payout is a whopping $21. Oh, but I had a few items on consignment. Yay? Not. My earnings on the Maeve sweater from Anthropologie was 45 cents. Yes, you read that right. 45 cents. I would much rather donate my quality clothing to people in need that sell on thredUp. Completely insulting and a huge ripoff.
Hi Gail. We'd be happy to review your payout further and address these concerns. We have sent you a private message.
I have already had a re-evaluation by one of your colleagues who believes your standards of practice are just fine. I will not continue to go back and forth on this matter - I saying, obviously very unfair reimbursement and you saying, let us re-evaluate and Yes We Are Right! You simply know how to steal product and are getting away with it. I will continue to warn others against you and have spread the word to a wide, wide circle of fashion conscious women. If it were my choice, you would be the business you say you are and not the rip-off artists you have become. No to ThredUp - Period.
I sent in first quality, impeccable clothing. Two outfits were a little avant garde, high end Japanese design, but the rest was designer label. Their reimbursement to me? $1.20! Buyer beware, seller beware. This was a tacitly ridiculous sum and when I questioned their assessment, they said they were "satisfied" with it. Great business model for them. Lousy results for me.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
