ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I have used Thred Up for a few years and recently sent them my last bag -- EVER. More than half my bag was rejected and I would think I lost $60-75 at a min. I am very disappointed to say the least.
We have a number of items and were considering sending them after we saw the ad. Thanks for the reviews! You saved us a great deal of headache. I would rather donate them!
Good selection of clothing. Customer service and shipping is slow - couple be faster considering how large the company has gotten. Not many coupon codes and can be pricey for used items especially the kids items. Best deals I've found are the new with tags but even then seeing that it's been sitting in someone's closet untouched, it's a bit pricey. Paying a premium for sure for the convenient access through online shopping. Decent photos but sometimes the sizes on the item itself doesn't match up to the actual fit. Must know the brand you're buying what size you fit into for said brand. I've bought a med sweater and I normally am a 8/10 and it ended up going to my sister who's 0/2 or xs. Not worth the restock fee to send it back to return.
Took my designer clothes and would not consign them - instead kept them as a buy out and sent me pennies! Refused to send my clothes back when I contacted them. I consider this stealing!
THIS COMPANY IS IN THE MIDST OF AN EFFORT TO COLLECT CLOTHING FOR A RETAIL RELATIONSHIP A LARGE RETAIL RELATIONSHIP THAT IS CHANGING THE WAY THEY MANAGE THE CLOTHING THAT YOU SEND IN TO SELL. THEY LIST YOUR ITEMS FOR A MUCH SHORTER TIMETHEREFORE THEY CLAIM THEM MORE RAPIDLY-APPARENTLY IN AN EFFORT TO BUILD UP THE MASSIVE QUANTITY OF USED CLOTHING NEEDED FOR THE RETAIL OUTLET RELATIONSHIP. I HAVE BEEN GETTING LISTS OF ITEMS THAT INDICATE I NED TO RECLAIM THEMMUCH MORE RAPIDLY THAN PREVIOUSLY. IT ALSO EXPLAINS THE MASSIVE INCREASE IN DISTRIBUTION OF AS MANY BAGS AS YOU WANT VERY RAPIDLY.
ADDED TO THE APPARENT ADDITION OF EMPLOYEES CONSIDERING HOW QUICKLY BAGS ARE LISTED. UNTIL THIS CONTRACT AND RELATIONSHIP WAS MADE PUBLIC IT TOOK AS LONG AS THREE MONTHS TO GET A BAG REVIEWED. SO THE CONCLUSION ISCONSIGNORS ARE FINDING LESS PRODUCT SOLD ON THEIR BEHALF AND MORE CLOTHING BEING CLAIMED FOR THE SITE TO SELL. FIND ANOTHER SITE. ALL YOU ARE DOING HERE IS LINING THEIR POCKETS FOR THIS USED CLOTHING RETAIL MARKET-ON A HUGE SCALE. LOOK IT UP. ALL OF THE INFORMATION IS ONLINE. THE COMPANY THEY WILL BE USING FOR A HUGE A VERY LUCRATIVE RETAIL PRESENCE FOR THREDUP. AND THEIR MAIN MAN- THE SILICON VALLEY CREEP WHO STARTED THIS RACKET. DO NOT SEND ANYTHING TO THEM
HE IS ONLY USING YOUR CLOTHING TO LINE HIS POCKETS!
I love most of the clothes I get, the only thing that upsets me is the 70.00 free shipping, it use to be 50.00 and that was doable but the new 70.00 kinda discourages me. As I am on a strick budget... so am not going to be able to buy as much. Also the slow process of going through my bags is discouraging, but over all the clothes are great I have been happy with most of them... I will recomend this and do. Please do not raise the prices to much or I will not be able to buy... thanks for a great place to shop...
I tried ThreadUP to see how good it was. I ordered different things and I was elated when I received my polka dot box. Unless you knew better you would think everything was new from original purchase. I have bought adult/children clothes and I love them. I sent some of my things and I was well pleased with what they paid me. Give it a try! You will love it!
I sent in many items - all in good condition and brands that they accepted. Only three were chosen I was not smart enough to pay for a return of items that weren't accepted. They only accepted three items. I could have done better at my local consignment shops. I will never use them again.
Love being able to send in my old/out grown clothes for credit. Always have a great selection and I can always count on good quality!
I have only made one purchase I was not happy with. However they have misplaced items after I purchased them and mysteriously the item was back up a few days later. Not sure if it was just another top from the same company that was the same size or if they are that disorganized - in either event, it was very disappointing to have purchased the item, only to get an email that said they couldn't find it. Like many others my first pay out was great, the second and third was not worth my time. All in all I would only use this site only if I needed something nice for an event at a lower price and had plenty of time to find it. You might have better luck just digging through the clearance racks at your local favorite stores.
Thanks to all of you who enlightened me on Thred Up! That save me some time, frustration and $$. I had packed my bags with great items, but I know now that I would have certainly received a shi! Y payout. Whew! Dodged a bullet on this place. Now I will use the bag to pack up the stuff to sell somewhere else.
I thought I would try this site, but I didn't realize the return policy. I bought 2 items and it cost 22 bucks. The shirt gapped in the bust and the dress was skimpier than it looked online. To return it I pay the shipping and they will refund me 15.00. I won't order from again. I can probably buy these items in the store for those prices. Plus, I won't get screwed on returns.
I suggest if you want second hand go to goodwill.com I am not sure their return policy, but the prices are decent and the money raised goes to help those in need.
I agree with the other reviewers. I sent them a bag full of great clothes. No wear. Mostly like new. All the brands they wanted (White House Black Market, Ann Taylor, etc). They took seven of my items (including a very expensive cocktail dress from WHBM that I wore once) and offered me a measly $18. Less than three bucks per item?!? I could have made more at a garage sale. Ridiculous. I will never send them another piece of clothes and won't be giving them my business.
I can't pass up a good deal and ThredUp delivers on their promise to sell quality items at fair prices I have purchased from them on multiple occasions and each time I've been more than satisfied with the items I received AND the prices I paid. You can't go wrong when you buy from them!
The clothes I have bought from thredup are great! But don't waste your time sending clothes to them, unless you pretty much want to donate everything. I got two clean out bags one I purchased the return service on the other one I didn't. I don't remember why I didn't purchase it on the second one but I just didn't. I put clothes in one that I thought was return service and I wanted those clothes back that they didn't keep and put the clothes I didn't want back in the other one. So needless to say I made a total of $15. - the $13 charged they send your bag back for. So really three dollars and they kept 30 pairs of jeans that they donated to someone. I don't know if they'll resolve this or if I'm just SOL. So I would be very careful with what you send to them especially if it's valuable.
Be warned, it's all true. ThredUp gives new sellers great payouts on their first bag(s). It did seem alot of items were "missing" from my first bags sent into them... but the $167 payout distracted me from that and I quickly dismissed the nagging thought.
Recently sent in a huge bag full of high-end and designer items, including a large selection of "plus" sizes, only to receive a paltry payout.
Guess what? Despite me requesting return assurance on the card which goes inside the polka-dot bag, they did not return my clothes and claim it is "impossible" to locate them.
Bottom line? Items in bags that are not selected for "return assurance" via your thredup online account are basically STOLEN by the company. They keep the good stuff and sell it on their site or sister websites without paying you for your items. In english, we call this Stealing. THIEVES!
If it helps, I've heard of peoples items that were not accepted or returned mysteriously appearing under another sellers bag on the site.
I do not reccomend them and am so upset they took advantage of my mom who was trying to clean out her closet from all her beautiful work suits. BEWARE
I sell sell at ThredUp. I have had great bags and bags with many rejections. Last week I bought a clear light bulb. Now I understand some of the rejections. I saw spots and tears I could not see under normal lighting. If you are a seller, do yourself a favor and get a good light bulb. You will then have a better understanding of why some items are refused. I received a Vince sweater this week I purchased. I love it and love the price. They photograph and list everything. They take care of all the hard work. You cannot expect to make what you think it's worth. If you think it is worth a lot to you, don't sell it. They send a pre-paid bag and take care of the rest. They have grown and changed and tweaked. I am trying to do the same. I want everything I purchase from them to be in great shape. So I need make sure what I sell is in the shape I want to buy it at. I also want it to be something people want. I have become more selective in the items I send in. Yes some bags are losers. If you still think you should get more, keep it and wear it. Consignment shops pay less.
Some people may not like secondhand clothes, but thredUP has secondhand apparel that is in great condition at much better prices than you could find at other stores. I've purchased several Nike items from this site; I even got a pair of Nike cold weather running tights for $8 that the MSRP is $60! I've had the tights for a while now and I've used them a lot of times, and they are still in great shape! The shipping is pretty fast and also pretty cheap on thredUP. I've been quite satisfied with shipping policies on thredUP. I'm very happy with the purchases that I've made on this website and I recommend it for anyone who wants a good deal on name-brand clothes. I haven't sold any clothes to them, but I've heard that it takes a while to process and that they are a bit picky about what they take in. I may try to sell to them in the future if I end up with some clothes I'd like to get rid of, but I am more likely to take it to Plato's Closet, a store that we have here that gives cash when you turn in clothes. Anyway, from my experience, thredUP is a great store and I recommend it!
Sent in three bags with over 200 items 60% new without tags 10% new with tags all accepted brands. I received $4.96 pay out and the rest was not accepted due to wear from use. LMAO on brand new items. I looked through the online store and found several unacceptable items listed for sale. NEVER again.
This is my favorite site for clothes. Prices are excellent and the selection is constantly changing.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
