ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I guess they make it, because everybody sends ONE BAG in...? I would never send a second one, but the one I send was filled to the rim with about 40-50 high value items, some of them new with tags. They picked 3 (!) used (!) items from the gap (!), paid me $12 (which after everything I read, seems top dollars for those people) and did God knows what with the rest - I don't believe a second that they actually donated them. All of this took them about 6 weeks and having my stuff sent back to me would have cost me those $12! What a joke - DON'T DO IT
I read a lot of the negative reviews about selling which informs me about whether or not I'll send clothes in to sell. However, it doesn't seem much different than most consignment experiences I've had. How do people expect that consignment stores will make money if they give you 75% of the retail value? As with most things you value it more highly than nearly everyone else in the world would pay for it :) My buying experience was great. Clothes were as described, I kept a shirt and sent back the dress (free return). I only shop new with tags so I'm prepared to pay a little more; both items were in perfect condition. I'll definitely use it again. The buying and selling feedback should probably be separate so as to give a clearer picture to potential users about what they should expect.
I am super happy with the selection and quality off the clothes I have purchased through Thredup! The prices are reasonable for all categories from adult to kids. This was my go to shop for this school year! They have great brands and quite a large selection. I have purchased a few things for myself too and was also happy. The clothes are wrapped nicely an come in a great polka dot box that is sturdy for all I have ordered. I am telling all my friends to check out the site! Definitely a great place for clothes as I hate to pay full price!
What do you expect folks? Where else can you return clothes that are used? First of all I dont get rid of anything I still have any use for. If I get 20 bucks for a huge bag, I am happy... Maybe if you all stopped expecting so much... I live in a very rural area, walmart is an hour away. (never mind great clothing) I am so thankful this site lets me buy and sell in my own home! Maybe if you stopped thinking YOUR stuff is worth so much... No one can buy if NO One sells...
They accepted one pair of my Miss Me jeans but not the other one that was exactly the same. Both new with price tags. They didn't accept my new with tags Cole Haan handbag even though it was on their accepted list. I checked the return box like many others. But they dont have record of that. This is ridiculous. They paid me $8 for two items. Like everyone else. Do not use this site!
I sent in a full bag of very nice clothes my daughter and I didn't wear. All high end name brand clothes, some even with tags on. All were on their "approved" list. Guess what I got? $8.33! That was for the only 3 items they accepted! I also requested my unsold items be returned through their "return assurance" program just because of all of the bad reviews I was a little leary. Well, somehow they don't have a record of me checking the box to get my unwanted items back and now they have disappeared! They claim they are no longer on their site because they donate them to be recycled. There is nothing they can do they explained. Absolute total untrusting people running this scam of a business. I'd think twice before wasting your time and money. I'd rather give it to the needy anyday~
I received a referral coupon to ThredUp. Loved browsing the site and bought myself some close to new items with a little extra cash I had and the coupon. The items were great and the return for 1 item was easy!
I thought I could make this a regular thing by sending them my still nice clothes that I no longer wear. I sent them HUGE clean out bag of things. Gap, Mini Boden, Old Navy, etc. Not everything was name brand, but you get the idea. ThredUp paid me 80 CENTS... not dollars... CENTS for the whole bag, and if I want my stuff back, I pay THEM 13 dollars. I was devastated. I don't have the money to get my things back so I can sell them elsewhere and I have a whole 80 cents to show for it.
I received an email asking how my experience was, and I responded the same day, communicating my disappointment. I have had no response yet. Please stay away! Not a good place to sell your things.
I love the hunt for unique items and thread up does not disappoint. The only thing I would consider is giving the costumer more mailing options.
I normally bring my clothes to a local upscale consignment store and I never expect much because they are in the business of making money. Of course they are not going to pay much for even brand new designer clothing, because they in turn are using the items to make a profit, so not much is to be expected. I often purchase items thinking I found a great deal, yet, often times don't end up wearing what I purchased. The local consignment store, I normally walk out with between $80.00-145.00. I think that is pretty good and I certainly did not expect anywhere's near that amount from thredUP. I was curious and wanted to try it, so I did... I was not expecting them to show me what they purchased and then right after to send a follow up email showing items that already sold. The items they supposedly purchased were brand new condition, the majority purchased were jeans, a couple blazers and a couple tops from Victorias Secret. I ended up with 9.45. Less than. 75 for each item they purchased. I will never do that again!
It is not worth sending your clothes here. I gave them a chance twice-- sending clothes that were a mix of gap, Ralph Lauren, and designer for kids (catimini) that had rarely been worn and had been freshly washed. Their pricing on your items are in their favor so they can make the most profit and the customer the least payout possible. You are better off both morally and financially of donating to the goodwill or Salvation Army and taking a tax donation or to a local consignment store. They said the clothes had 'pre-pilling" and needed washing-- what the heck is pre-piling (they either have piling or they don't!) and the clothes had just been washed before sending in. Don't use this service! I've used a local consignment store and had much better experience and treatment!
I am amazed at the quantity of items that Thred Up take in and sell... I love using their services! I send in my daughter's clothes that she has out grown and I get to order some things for myself! What is not to love! They are innovative and communicative regarding times for bag processing and delivery! Love this company!
You have to take into consideration that they take items that are trending, are good quality, and have an acceptable original price. If they took all your items. They wouldn't make no profit. Thus, it would probably shut down. If your going to give clothes, make sure your not too clingy to them. Don't set your payout to high expectations because these items are used, take note of that.
Sent it a giant bag with hardly worn $75 shoes, a Columbia coat and a second winter coat from Macy's perfect condition and received $4. I don't even know how this business is making it with such terrible customer care. Ugh!
I sent in 1500 worth of children cloth they sent back 6.00 loser cheater they steal your clothes to sell
Same as all the other negative reviews. Sent in a bag of designer clothes and one bag that had never been used. Supposedly, I'm getting $16? My account says $0.00. After several emails and no response from them, I'm guessing I'm out my bag of clothes.
Lmao do anyone have something good too say lol. They must be horrible to have this many complaints haha.Won't e getting my business for sure
Not thrilled with the experience.
First, I feel like the communication is poor. It took forever for them to even update me on my bag being delivered. The tracking number wasn't working, and then the updates throughout the process were delayed.
Second, I feel that it took ENTIRELY too long to process the bag. They pushed my processing date back twice, and then it still wasn't even complete on the date it was supposed to be completed.
Also, I feel like the payout is way below what it should have been. I will be receiving pennies compared to what they will make off the items. There were also other brand new items in that bag that I feel like are not truly going to be donated. I'm sure they will make a profit off of the items in some way behind the scenes, but that is the risk I took sending it blindly.
I wish I would have read more reviews before I did this. I would have made so much more money at a local consignment shop, but I liked the ease and convenience of doing it online and through the mail.
Lastly, I CANNOT believe they make you wait 14 more days to be able to cash out the balance once your bag has been process. I think that is ridiculous. You can spend the balance on their site right away, but you can't cash out for two weeks after.
So when it is all said in done, I will never do this again nor recommend it to a friend. I should have done my research.
DO NOT SEND IN ANY STUFF TO THIS SCAM SITE. THIS SITE IS SUCH A SCAM. THEY LITERALLY HAVE CRIMINALS RUNNING AND WORKING THIS SITE. IT SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN, ASAP. IF YOU SEND IN YOUR STUFF THEY SAY MAKE SURE IT'S 'LIKE NEW" TO GET MORE MONEY. I SENT IN LITERALLY "NEW MICHAEL KORS' WINTER DOWN COAT, WINTER BOOTS AND RALPH LAUREN BOYS BRAND NEW SNOW BOOTS AND I GOT NOTHING. THEY SAID THE WOULD GIVE ME 16 DOLLARS, BUT MY FEE FOR SENDING IN THE STUFF WAS $16, SO I LITERALLY GOT A $0 PAYOUT. I EMAILED THEM THINKING THIS MUST BE A MISTAKE MY STUFF WAS NEW AND BEAUTIFUL, AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. SAID THAT IT WASN'T A JOKE. I DEMANDED MY STUFF BE SHIPPED BACK AND THEY SAID IT WAS ALREADY SOLD! THEN I SAW ON THE SITE IT WAS SOLD FOR 3X'S THE AMOUNT THEY PAID ME AND THEY REFUSED TO SEND IT BACK. I CRIED FOR A WEEK. I SENT THINGS IN TO MAKE EXTRA MONEY, SELLERS ARE NOT RICH PPL THEY ARE AVERAGE PPL LOOKING TO MAKE SOME MONEY TO HELP THEM OUT FINANCIALLY. THIS PLACE IS SUCH A SCAM. SPREAD THE WORD, AND DONT' SEND IN ANYTHING TO THIS SITE, EVER!
It took them 1 month to "pay" me for my large bag of high end clothing (most with tags!). Instead of paying me they put it on my account towards purchasing their clothing. Furthermore, they paid me $3 for about $200 worth of clothing! I sell on eBay & should have known better. I also donate to Goodwill & would have been better off. I have bought some of ThredUps items which are overpriced considering what I was paid. I will never use them again & have let everyone else know too. Don't do it!
Sent a full bag of Urban Outfitters, American Eagle and Free People and received $4.70. What a waste of time and effort. Next time I will give it to the poor. I'm sure my tax credit would be greater.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
