ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I sent them a bag full of luxury clothing in excellent condition. One month or so later they sent me an email saying that out of the entire bag they accepted 2 and GAVE AWAY everything for free without consulting me.
Those were worth ~800USD. When I contacted them they told me "too bad for you, you did not check a little box that specified you wanted your items back so we're disposing of those".
They do not "know" where my clothes are - how convenient.
They do not "want" to refund me for "not knowing' where they are.
They are refusing to do anything to make it right to me.
My guess? Someone there conveniently "decided" that my clothes were unfit and "conveniently" kept them for them... hiding behind a little box, how brave.
Do not trust them! They are picking what's good to sell (and what's good to keep for themselves) in a totally arbitrary manner. Proof? They are unable to locate the clothes they refused or to tell me why they refused them? How convenient, right?!? Of course they cannot tell me, that's all the more profit margin for them.
It is shady. It is dishonest. It is a shame of a business.
NEVER AGAIN I will use that company, neither should you!
I've been using this service for almost 2 years and have the best experience! Your items must be in excellent resell-able condition, if they're not they will send them back or recycle them (your choice). I've also shopped this site and have been very pleased with all my purchases, and each item I have purchased has been about 70% less then the retail price and in "like new" condition! I have recommended this site to several friends who also love it!
Here is what I learned...
1. The items you send must be in PRISTINE condition. Even if you don't think it's faded - they do. They will also find every pill, stain, tear, rip, blip, loose thread, missing bead etc... (great for those buying the clothes).
2. So with that in mind... get the return shipping for unsalable items. Unless you are 101% comfortable not getting your things back (because not everything will sell).
3. Several of the items I sent were not sold because they were deemed "difficult" to sell - not sure what that means (one was a vera bradley cross body bag) - but there are no guidelines as what is "difficult". I have seen the same dress on sale for a month as of this writing.
4. They do not report what they are not selling - I had to ask where the rest of my bag was. I was impressed with the quick and itemized response. Disappointed that I had to ask though.
5. From a buying perspective - the box came quick and every single item was in great to fantastic shape. Packaged nicely too.
If you are selling - purchase the return bag.
This company misrepresents themselves. I mistakenly sent them 3 bags of name brand clothing, shoes and purses. Theyou estimated the first bag at $13 and change and the second bag at. 55. FIND ANOTHER OPTION. DO NOT USE THRED UP
It came sooner than expected, was in better condition than advertised, and I couldn't be happier with the service.
I love that I could easily narrow down to items that I was interested in. Everything I ordered was in excellent condition except one pair of pants was missing the button. This wasn't mentioned in the description but I'll be able to repair them pretty quickly. Still we'll be ordering again soon!
Every order has arrived on time and just as the picture illustrates. If something does not fit or I decide I do not like I can easily return it and get credit towards more purchases. The clean out bags are easy to get, fill, and also receive credit on your account. I have found fashions that are different from anything I can buy in my area so my clothes are so different from others. Love to shop this way!
I buy and sell my clothes through thredup, and so far it's been a positive experience. My bags usually get me around $30-50, and the payout is easy if you don't want store credit. I have also had positive experiences buying... the people who choose the clothes have a good eye and the items are listed honestly. Like a second-hand store, there's a lot to sift through but if you know what you're looking for the filters and personal shops make it easy!
I placed 2 order recently and was very pleased with everything. Only 1 item was way too big but the others ( and they were big orders) fit perfectly. I really can't complain about anything. Everything came nicely folded in the box.
I thought I had found a good consignment sight until I sent in my first bag. I also made the terrible oversight of not requesting return of items. They listed four out of 12 items (all of which were new with tags and nice quality brands) at such low prices it was a joke. Because I complained and wouldn't leave me alone they gave me 30% off of my next purchase - a beautiful leather bag. Got it and it sure didn't feel like leather. Went to the site for the bags and they sell only VEGAN leather. ThredUp had tried to get away with this misleading listing. Also the way they show and describe the clothes is beyond AWFUL. The clothes are wrinkled with one or maybe two views. The size listings are incorrect and the descriptions are incomplete - sometimes not even listing fabric. Basically you are given almost no information. I just bought a purse with the money on my account and my 30% off. It is leather, but not of good quality. They always answered my complaints with "we are new, we are so busy, we'll add that to our suggestions". I only buy and sell consignment and they are the worst.
The prices aren't bad for most things, though sometimes they can still be a little high especially considering what they pay out. Selling is another matter. They take weeks to process and the payout is a bit on the pitiful side.
I sent a full bag with multiple NEW clothes in it with tags and only got credit for 2 items! Offered $1.29 right now or $2.35 if I choose to wait for consignment sale! What a damned joke! Also, if you look at the prices of many of the items they are a ripoff! I do better going to local thrift stores or Kohls and Boscovs for sales! BEWARE!
I love shopping on this site! I'm always happy with the items, and if they don't fit Thredup makes the return process very easy.
I've used Thred Up for the past 2 years with great success and payout for my items. This time around, most of my high end items have "disappeared" (i. E. I did not receive a payout for them). Many other reviewers are posting the same complaints. Stay away from Thred Up and their now suspicious business practices!
I've placed at least 4 or 5 orders since I've discovered your site and could not be more pleased. I've been so impressed by how nicely items are packaged to the items specifically. I'm telling everyone about your website.
The site and experience are easy to use. Get a bag mailed to you for free. Mail it in for free with your clothes. However, after sending my clothes, was disappointed in the outcome. In retrospect, I would have donated these to goodwill, etc. I wish I knew where the clothes went if they didn't sell and I didn't want to pay to have them shipped back. Are they donated? Also, wish I would have had a better idea of what they were worth before sending them in.
Have now learned that Target / Thredup partnership has been cancelled. Likely related to the poor experience users had. And also, the lack of users participating? It is a total rip off for sellers. Not as much for shoppers.
Had purchased a Vera Bradley bag new with the tags from threadup. Bag was too small so when I sent in my first polka dot bag I put it in. To my amazement it was not accepted. Purchased it from them, never used it, sent it back and they wouldn't take it... really... Something is definitely wrong with that.
I have to say that at least half of my clothes have come from ThredUp! They have a great selection and each piece of clothing has such a detailed description you can practically feel the clothing. I'm always shopping in the app on my phone which notifies you of coupons almost everyday!
I would recommend ThredUp to everyone and I'm on my way! My only wish is that they had men's clothing. My best friend and shopping buddy is a man and when I told him about ThredUp, before realizing is was only women and children clothes, he was very sad he couldn't shop there. But for me, it's my favorite and I have gotten many a friend hooked!
I am still waiting to see what my bags of goodies are worth. Then I will try the next step of shopping
I was provided great service, one of the shirts I received had a small hole. I notified support department, response was very quick and I received credit back for the shirt
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
