I will never use this free tax service again. A mistake was made on my 2015 tax return and we received a refund. I just received a letter from IRS stating that we owe them $5,000 for retirement income that was not reported! All of this information was input but FreeTaxUSA failed to include it in our total income. I will go back to using TurboTax as they are much more reliable. Not happy...
Well everything seemed to be going smoothly but have an issue with my return and need some help, I paid extra for priority support only to find out that means that your issue will be dealt with by email with in 24 hours. I can see now this was a big mistake to even consider doing a tax return with an online company that provides absolutely no quick answer to even the simplest question by phone support. I will never use them again.
Hi Keith, we generally answer customer questions in much less than 24 hours (usually within the hour). Complex questions may take longer to research; easier questions can be answered in considerably less time. When you purchase the Deluxe Upgrade, your question is placed at the front of the line and is answered before the other questions in the queue. This is my first year filing. I absolutely loved it. I was apprehensive when the email support said 48 hours to respond, but they got back with me within 5-30 minutes each of the 5 times I contacted them. It was just as easy to navigate and go back and make changes as compared to H&R Block and TurboTax I paid extra for state filing, the Support option and the Audit because the costs were so cheap as compared to other sites. Will use it again. Make sure to get the coupon code online for a discount!
I thought the process was much easier and definitely cheaper than other vendors. I didn't read all of these reviews so now I am a bit nervous. The return was for my daughter who has a pretty simple return but she had 2 state tax returns and both of those were filed smoothly. She is getting refunds for all 3 so I will wait to see if that part is as smooth as the filing.

But, According to the North Carolina Department of Revenue website it is free to file the state return with FreeTaxUSA. This was so when I did a family member's return but on mine it charged $14.99. Something is wrong with that.

I have used them all and this one not only is my favorite but the most intuitive software I have used. I switched a few years ago. It doesn't consist of endless pop up upgrade to $$$ every few min. It asks once if I want to upgrade to priority support. I didn't select it and continued on. It didn't keep popping up unlike the big filing companies always did. Also it doesn't cost more to fill out my Sch C or Rental income. Even with all my forms I still finish my return in under 30 min. The Customer Support people are helpful and I don't have to wait forever for an answer to my questions. I would suggest not racing through the screens as I did almost mess up once when filing because I was not reading the screen fully and missed selecting something. I would have had to amend my return had I submitted. Thankfully I caught my mistake before filing. So read each screen and you won't go wrong.
My boyfriend fell on hard times and did not file for four years. Free tax helped me to file them and get his irs dues paid plus ******* back. We are still waiting to file the last two states. But will be doing that as soon as we file this years state
Can't beat the price (free for federal, only $15.00 per state). I fully expected the website to function poorly because of the low cost, but I shocked to find out it works fantastically and is easier to get through than all the competitors who are charging hundreds of dollars for the same service. Free Tax USA is great. I believe I've been using this for approx 10 years for myself as well as filing it for six other family members. I just helped my daughter with hers & I was so amazed that both State & Federal were accepted within 30 minutes. That was the 1st time ever that acceptance was received that quickly. Hers was not a simple situation, with many dependents as well deductions. Also within a week both State & Federal refunds were deposited. It is 14.95 or so for the state only. One still needs to learn about the process a bit & not just depend on the website to walk you through it. I have never used the deluxe edition which is only $5.95... that's a great price for those who don't have much experience with filing their own taxes.
Free tax USA is well designed and easy to use. As other reviewers have observed, they mess up when it comes to filing the return. I had a substantial refund coming from the state of Illinois. Out of curiosity, I decided to look if the check from Illinois was deposited electronically in my bank. To my surprise, my return was never submitted. Milton Friedman was right when he said "there's no such thing as a free lunch."
I have been using freetaxUSa for last 3 years, never had any problem. They send a notification every year just to remind me, it time to file your next tax return. Love it! FreeTaxUSA is easy to use and works perfectly fine for me.
Sad some of you say this is a bad software. Free Tax USA, besides being a good software and easy to follow, is the cheapest. I was able to include deductions and 1099 forms in my return without being charged extra for it. Please, FreeTaxUSA, do not change.
I used them to prepare a prior year return. They were easy to use, but for some reason they couldn't find my credit union by name. Of course tax forms require a lot of private info, including financial information, such as the name of that credit union. That same day someone tried unsuccessfully to login to my credit union account. I can't prove they were involved. But maybe.
In retrospect, their site has some bad online reviews, including at your site.

The return was free and all, but then when I needed help they were not helpful at all. All I got was "did you call the irs?" "Sorry we don't know" it's been 90 days and I'm about to be evicted in a couple weeks, with no answers. The IRS said they don't have the return but FreeTaxUSA they can't do anything even tho they are the only ones who say the IRS has the return. I haven't had problems in the past but they didn't have some helpful amazing customer service like they advertise.

I have been filling my own taxes for 8 years, I usually use H&R block free service online, this year they wanted to charge me so I searched the internet for a new website to file for free. I found freetaxusa.com it appeared to be a safe site so I filed state and federal with them. It has been four weeks since I have filed I have yet to received my refund back. That's 20 business days. I have never had a refund take this long, the website cannot even tell me when it may be deposited and I'm unable to get in contact with a live person, when I called I just get a recording that tells me the same thing the website does that it is still processing. So after 20 business days not only do I not have access to my funds, I also don't know when it will be deposited. I've received no further email apologizing for such a delay, or explanation as to why I don't have my money in my account. I will never file with them again.
Hello Sam, thank you for writing. The first thing you'll want to do is double check the date that your return was accepted. To do this, log into your account and click on the "Home" link followed by "Check Return Status." The IRS says that most refunds will be processed within 21 days, but there are some exceptions. Once your return has been accepted, the processing and timing of that refund is in the hands of the IRS. Unfortunately, we do not have a way to expedite the processing of your refund, and for security reasons, the IRS will not discuss refund information with software vendors. Therefore you can continue to check the status by going to the IRS web site and clicking on the "Where's My Refund?" link.

Completing my taxes has taken far longer than needed as their is no support from this site. You are made to wait 24 hours for an answer delaying the already frustrating process of submitting taxes. The fee for state taxes is also more than I would expect to pay due to my low income this year as I was prevented from working due to medical issues.

I paid for state return, but it won't file the returns, It says I have unanswered questions, but I have been through it 5 times and there are no unanswered questions. Their instant help does not respond. I ve spent hours doing this answering all the questions and now I'm going elsewhere. No place to call and work this out. They just took my money and now won't file. Very angry and disgusted.

Maybe it was your error. This software is good. I owe federal taxes because if a loan discharge and I figured that. State taxes are good. Don't blame the software when u input your numbers wrong and then get mad. Double check your $#*!. Simple.
I have send my taxes in about 10 have been rejected. Most company will have a telephone number listed. No number listed to contact them. Just a list of questions and answers on their website. What if you have questions that are not listed.We never use them again.

Worked surprisingly well for me. Filed taxes on the 4th and received refund on the 16th. Each year I get more annoyed that lobbies like TurboTax and H&R Block fight reforms to tax laws, just to protect their ancient business model. Over the last 20 years I've probably spent $1000 dollars on tax software. Never again. FreeTaxUSA is a great solution and a great first step to bust that up. Ideally you should be able to log into the IRS site and confirm the data they already have, like many other countries around the world.
My taxes were relatively straight forward. I found the navigation easy to use and I verified my numbers against some other pay tax sites (Including TurboTax) just to see if they provided any value. They didn't.
Perhaps I was lucky, but reading the reviews I wonder if some of these people should even be near a computer let alone doing their own taxes.
Answer: Hi Janet, sorry for any confusion. The $12.95 fee is for state tax return preparation whether the tax return is e-filed or printed and mailed. In regard to your difficulty paying. When you make a debit or credit card purchase online, the card processor checks with your bank or credit card issuer to first make sure you have enough available credit to complete the purchase. The card processor then makes sure the other information you input (for instance, your address) matches what your bank has on record. If all is well, the transaction is processed. If not, such as an address that doesnt match, then the transaction is declined. If you were having difficulty with each card, I would recommend double checking the billing information you entered on FreeTaxUSA. If thats all correct, I would contact your bank and make sure the information they have on file is up-to-date. However, if you choose to mail your return on the Filing Method screen found under the Filing menu, our software will tell you how/where to mail your return. If you don't have a printer and would like to order a printed copy, you can do that on the Order Products and Services screen found in the same menu.
