thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I paid $47 total ($12 shipping)for a dress that weighed 2oz. It didn't fit. (The size listed on the site was horribly wrong.) When I tried to return it, ThredUp offered ONLY a $20 refund (?) if I paid another $4 "re-stocking" fee. I'm supposed to pay $51 to get $20 back. WHUTT? They KEEP $30 for me to wait 8 days to get a dress that doesn't fit? Ridiculous! I accepted the $20 "credit," for NOT RETURNING the dress, and I ordered a different $14 dress, and after all the associated fees with the second dress, I had to pay ANOTHER $14 to get the new dress. (How does a $14 dress with a $20 credit turn into me having to PAY another $14?) My total cost: $68 out-of-pocket for a USED dress that I could get at Salvation Army for $10, or I could have gone to Macy's and I could have gotten a beautiful, new, well-fitting dress for $70.

I AM A SELLER. This review is as a seller, not for a purchase. This company takes your belongs and does not tell you what is done with them; i. E., have sent them designer handbags and they make no mention of them until I start pressing them and the of course give the standard lie about some items are not acceptable. That's all BS. If they accept your item, they should be able to tell you what happens to each item and WHY! They are impossible to reach for a direct answer and use AI as their main scapegoat. They also have invented charges for everything under the sun, causing you to get peanuts for your belongings and then gouge you to return any items. Such a dishonest company!

I never expected the quality of the pieces to be SO SO CHEAP. Absolutely disappointed. Out of 7 pieces I ordered, 2 were borderline acceptable, 1 was ok but I'll have to 'fix it' a bit and the rest was complete trash. Do NOT trust the quality because the photos completely lie.

I recently tried using Thredup for the first time and sent in some of my best name brand clothing items in excellent condition. Not only did they lie about what all they received (I wish I would've logged what all I sent in because my bags were loaded and heavy) but the kits to send the items in cost money. Absolutely terrible. They chose the worst condition, non-brand items to sell. They declined the nicer things (brands like Calvin Klein). I wish I would've logged everything I sent in because I KNOW there was a lot more than what they said they received. This company and site is a scam. I basically paid them, since the kits cost money to send in your items and then you don't get but literal pennies for your items. I wholeheartedly regret sending in all of my nice clothing that I could've made way more decent money on as a yard sale. When you try to request they send your items back, they want to charge you $5.99 per item, plus shipping! They are literally having me pay for my own clothing. So I'm actually losing money rather than making anything. This is such an unethical company and something needs to be done.

This company is terrible. I have to pay to get my own clothes back which was not disclosed to me. They only give the clothes a few weeks to sell too. I would have never used this company had I known this, which they say they disclosed to me. I have no idea where that would have been. And also the things that did sell I received like $1.00. Ridiculous!

I sent in a bag of clothes because I took advantage of the clean out bag at half off. Paid for that in my first order. It took them 3 months to get through the bag. When I saw what they priced some items at, I about CRIED. The Puma shoes retail for $94 I wore them once they were too big, my payout was $8.60. Custom made hoodies (from a small shop - handmade retail $103 were listed for $23... My payout was $1 something)! DO NOT SELL WITH THREADUP! I hope they fail miserably seriously... I am not the only person frustrated with this... I have not seen ONE positive seller experience.

I sent a lot of things and the policy is that after 30 days, if they did not sell, too bad. They keep them, so they can sell or one of their employees can keep. I sent some expensive items, too. A long suede skirt, never worn, as an example. Never got it back! If you want any of your items back, you have to pay for them. Go with Poshmark. All of your items stay in your hands until sold. Thredup is a total rip off!

Don't do it! Awful
March 15, 2025

I sent three boxes of stuff( $45) total, and made only $40. They lost a pair of my Ariat knee length boots that I sent in! I was only able to interact with a computer. No human involved. Probably AI. No recompense received. No apologies. I also sent leather Calvin Klein boots and Eileen Fischer items, and made about $5. It's really awful. Big resentment against this company! It was the worst thing I could have done! That's on me, I understand that now. Just wanted to post my humble opinion of just how awful my experience has been. Never, never, never again! I hope this helps someone else. They do not even deserve the one star!

White-owned scam-filled business. They sell your used items at new prices. You receive only a small percentage of the payout, and if your items don't sell, they donate them.

I really, really wanted to love ThredUp. Unfortunately, I've had way too many super negative experiences with them to continue to be a customer. I've made 3 purchases from them this year and every single one of them had something very wrong with it. One item was 'cancelled' with no explanation given. I was given a credit for the item but had to pay their ridiculous shipping cost of almost $11 just for a five dollar t-shirt? Another order had the size of the jeans I ordered completely wrong - by a whopping 8 sizes. Of course, when I attempted to return the itemSSSS in my cart that were incorrect, damaged beyond belief (why are they selling GARBAGE to people and passing it off as clothing?), or didn't fit - ThredUp all but refused by offering a kick-in-the-teeth low credit instead of taking my return. And to top it off, ThredUp sustain-shames its own customers into dropping a return request by making statements about how keeping your return is better for the earth. Instead of actually being a responsible company that truly cares about the earth, sustainability, and its customers, ThredUp just leans REALLY hard into the sustainability thing to pull one over on their customers and attempts to shame them when they have completely legitimate issues. Their customer service is pretty much just a bot - a joke at best. If you're unlucky enough to ever have to contact them, it's a complete waste of time. Cold, generic responses that often don't even make sense. ThredUp is nothing more than a rip-off in "sustainable" clothing. GET SOME WOMEN INVOLVED AT THE C LEVEL OF THIS COMPANY TO SAVE IT BEFORE YOU GUYS RUN IT INTO THE FAKE SUSTAINABILITY GROUND. LOWER YOUR SHIPPING COSTS AND MAYBE GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS WHO CHOOSE TO SUPPORT YOU. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, IT'S JUST GOOD BUSINESS.

Don't bother selling with them. They give you a few dollars or less for items with tags on. Macys dresses and kohls.
I made less than 5.00 for 2 dresses never worn with tags. I don't buy cheap items. I would rather get them back and give them away but you pay to many fees.

I have fun buying used clothes. So I thought that I would send in some of my stuff. So disappointing. They didn't sell my matching skirt and blouse together nor my pant suit. They said 5 of my items were not sellable but yet they are still selling them. Meaning, I won't make a dime off of them. The shoes they said were not
Profitable were never worn and they listed them for $15.99.
I don't understand if you can't sell it for me then why steal the sale for yourself?

Not what they claim.
January 2, 2025

A friend told me her daughter tried Threadup and it seemed like a good way to sell your clothes without having to wait for them to sell.
I did everything required of me to prepare my items, boxed them up, printed out mailing slip and shipped three boxes off.
I waited about three week to get a response that thay received one of my boxes. They were to inventory them, put them online for sale.
My items were good condition top name brands. Two weeks later I saw three of my probably 20 items for sale.
With all three boxes I probably had about 60 items.
I send my stuff to consignment on a regular basis so I know the stuff I sent in about 80% of it was sellable and in really good shape.

To this day I've never heard from them again and never received any money for the few items on line that said they sold.

I knew it was too good to be real.
No wonder they have less then a three star rating.

Seller be ware!

I sent in a large bag of clothes, some designer items and a couple that were never worn or with tags. The never worn item listed as average because it "showed wear", which was 100% inaccurate. A new $75.00 hat was resold at $9.90 because they didn't know what they had.
Customer service was only via chat and not helpful. They said I would receive notifications when my items were up so they could be returned, which isn't true. There is no communication whatsoever.
They made $369.70 on my items, and counting, since they kept 6 other pieces without telling me. I cash out at $116 so I made 36% on new items that would have paid 50% - 60% in a local consignment.
It's deceiving. Save yourself the grief and sell locally where you can help a local business owner and have a conversation about your items and negotiate a fair value vs being taken advantage of.

Basically theft
December 16, 2024

Thredup received my clean out bag the first of October and processed it mid December. They know exactly what they are doing. They process just enough items to cover the hefty fees they charge you for sending it to them and then whatever payout you might have gotten is absorbed by their fees. You get nothing and they pocket the full profit from your clean out bag. I have purchased items from them also, and they have been average purchases. I could have done better thrifting locally. I will not purchase from, or do business with, this company again.

False advertising
December 9, 2024

I bought 4 items, 3 were on "final sale", meaning no returns/refunds. Three items were listed as in excellent condition. One item was listed as "very good condition" (minor wear on fabric). Only one of the items was even in "good condition" (lots of wear no major defect), two were in poor condition with snags and holes and excessive sweater pilling. One of the items was 4 sizes off of the listing. I attempted to make a return but final sale items aren't returnable. I chatted with customer service and threatened to get my credit card company involved. They refunded me all the items but I still had to pay shipping. Never again.

I ordered four pairs of jeans for my wife for her birthday which she really liked. I ordered them on the 12th of this month. I was told that I would have them by the 18th. 18th had come and gone then was told by this Saturday the 23, and on the 23rd they change the date to this Monday the 25th mind you by now my wife's birthday has come and gone and I had to stop at other places for what she wanted it is now 8:42 and according to UPS they don't even have a tracking for me because none of the information is given to you by thredUP has the right tracking number. I've continuously tried to get a hold of them and all I can get in touch with is their automated system then they tell me in 4 minutes somebody will get a hold of me in a few minutes 4 minutes I've tried for 90 minutes so far messaging and waiting. I want to cancel my order but yet they're not giving me an option to even do that. I honestly feel like I should be reimbursed for the amount of money that I spent there and some of the money that I spent for her birthday due to the fact that they continuously do not get anything right or on time. I definitely will not be shopping with them again nor will my wife or her friends and I really recommend to everybody else if you want it at the time it says it's going to be delivered and you need it then DO NOT BOTHER! I have had many sites that my wife uses and none of them have had issues like this there's always somebody you can speak to and they get it resolved right away if there was a slight issue. Well tracking it it hasn't moved an inch today and it's literally an hour and a half from where I live its been at the same spot all day, even at the last time I just looked. My word of advice is stay away unless you're really in love with something check other sites for it if you can. And if you are really in love with something then make sure to order it oh probably a month before you actually will need it

I sent in 4 boxes of brand new tags attached, clothes and shoes. Didn't make any money at all. I literally paid for them to take my things and they didn't send back the things they wouldn't take. DO NOT SELL WITH THEM! You will not get any money but they will take yours!

SCAM
October 24, 2024

*Zero Stars: Deceptive, Unprofessional, and Exploitative - Avoid at All Costs*

I'm writing this review as a warning to others: stay far, far away from ThredUp SELLING YOUR ITEMS. My experience with this company was an unmitigated disaster, marked by deceit, incompetence, and a blatant disregard for ethical business practices.

I have picture proof of what I'be send in and in what condition. Customer service claims a pair of designer shoes to be fake and another pair to have been excessively worn when they're were in fact new.

Items supposedly disposed of so no way of getting them back!

I suspect them to be listed at a later date for their benefit without getting my (already ridiculously low) cut!

What a great SCAM/FRAUD they created with no accountability or repercussions!

RIP OFF
October 10, 2024

Ordered a purse from thredUp which was described to be in "excellent" condition. When I received the purse, not only were there several loose threads (it is a fabric purse with embroidery) but the zipper was broken. Definitely not my idea of excellent. I went online to find out what I should do because I still wanted the purse, but I was not happy with the condition. ThredUp gave me three options: credit for about 40% of what I paid, 35% off my next order or free shipping on my next order. So I chose the credit thinking it meant they would credit it to my credit card. No, they meant store credit. I didn't realize this until after I had made my selection. So basically they wanted me to spend more money instead of actually resolving my issue which was their fault in the first place. I got on online chat with thredUp's customer service and long story short, they refused to credit my credit card and insisted I had to either return the purse or accept one of their other "offers". I kept pointing out that it was their fault for misrepresenting the condition of the purse, but it didn't make any difference. I ended up disputing the charge on my credit card and getting the entire purchase price credited. And I got to keep the purse. ThredUp's loss because I had no issue with paying for the purse at a discounted price, but they refused to credit my card. So now they are out of a sale and a purse.
