They are an online consignment shop. Every previous consignment place I've done business with the proceeds were split 40/60 or maybe 30/70 but thredup most items it's 4% that means for every dollar the individual gets 4¢ and thredup keeps 96¢. Also if you read the fine print (see picture) they have literally thousands of brands that are too inexpensive for them to bother with paying the owner anything but not too inexpensive for them to sell and keep the money. Don't believe me? Check out consignment 101 for brands that they basically steal from ppl. Don't send anything to them, just post your clothes as a lot. You'll make much more money. Including a pic of my recent clean outs. These were 30 pound ones too and I only made 38¢ this is without return assurance, that's ridiculous thredup is getting greedy..
Thredup will claim a perfect condition high value item doesn't meet their standards so they won't list it under your account and you won't get a payout. I've been reselling for over a decade across many platforms and know how to evaluate an item. I have 5 star reviews and no returns. Yet thredup will claim they probably found a flaw in the item to justify not listing it (because they're stealing it to resell out from under you) as if they have superior inspection skills (they don't).
Their customer service then goes on to belittle you and offer no solution, arrogantly doubling down while being vague about what happened to your flawless item. They never directly say why they rejected a certain item despite claiming to document flaws. It's because they didn't reject it - they stole it. It will end up being listed under another account so they take full profit. They're unethical scammers and liars.
Every time I've purchased something from ThredUP the item description has been miles apart from what I received. They'll say something is in like new condition and it will arrive with holes and severe pilling. AND when they are wrong, they don't refund you. They create a credit on their site so you have to shop again. Absolute horrid service. And feels very dishonest.
I love buying second hand, but am very disappointed with ThredUP. To start, for a company based on people looking at pictures of an item on a mannequin, they really need better mannequins. You can't see the actual shape of any clothing. The shipping process took over a week, with FedEx never updating the package after the initial sticker print. Once it got here, about half of my items were dingy or were covered in someone else's hair. One item smelled so strongly like Tide, I had to wash it twice before I could wear it without getting itchy (I'm allergic). I wanted to return about six items, but found out I could only return one and I'd be charged a restocking fee, so I would only be getting $24 back instead of the $40 I spent. That item was a pair of jeans that ThredUP marked as a size 32, but they're actually a size 28. I've had issues with quality control from them in the past, but thought I'd give them another shot. Never again.
For the most part I've had a positive experience purchasing items through thredUP, but am really disappointed over an item that arrived – which was described as being "in good condition with minor wear on fabric" – having looked like it was run over by a car or bike. Looking closely back at the item as it was pictured on their site, they were able to hide most of these highly visible marks with the jacket's hood, while the other marks are visible only on the underside of the sleeves (so not captured in the photo). I feel this item was falsely advertised and unfairly priced.
This is an update to my original review of ThredUP. After over 8 days of waiting, worrying about my package, and contacting at least 5 customer service reps; ThredUP notified me that my package was lost and they issued me a full refund. I am satisfied with my getting my refund. I am not satisfied with the dirt poor shipping and handling. I spent hours searching for those clothes and I really wanted them! Wasted time! I will no longer patronize this business. ThredUP doesn't seem like a competent nor efficiently-run company. I definitely don't recommend ordering from them if you are counting on receiving your package by a certain date. I have given them an extra star for refunding me quickly.
I am very NEW customer of thredUP. My very first order was on Saturday, September 18. I decided to try thredUP based on the TV commercials, a few YouTube reviews, and the prices I saw while browsing Google shopping. I wish I had found this website prior to ordering from them, then I most likely wouldn't have gone through with my order. I desperately needed a capsule wardrobe of good quality work clothing for new job starting Monday, September 27, but I don't have a large budget. Since shipping time was very sensitive, I was very careful to only select items from my home warehouse which is supposed to be located in a city only an hour's drive from where I live. On Monday, September 20, thredUP sent an email notifying me that my order had been shipped and was on it's way. I was hopeful! There was also a link to get the tracking info. After clicking the tracking info, I was taken to their shipper's (Veho) website and a message reads, "Your order is still in thredUP's possession." It didn't really alarm me on Monday, because they had just "shipped" the order; but now it's almost Friday (4 days later) and the shipper's website still says, "Your order is still in thredUP's possession." There is no estimated delivery date at all. I have now spoken with two thredUP reps via chat. One rep blamed the shipper for forgetting to update the tracking info and to wait 5 more days for an update. Another rep said they would investigate into my order further and update me in 24-48 hours. I also contacted Veho, the shipper, and their rep told me the package is indeed still in thredUP's possession. I don't know who to believe, but I just want my clothes NOW. This is a disaster. ThredUP seems so unprofessional and unreliable. This makes me extremely wary of ever ordering from thredUP again. I most likely won't recommend them to anybody else either.
I have spent thousands of dollars over the past year on thredup. I LOVE buying second-hand for a variety of reasons, and have always found exactly what I needed... and then some. In the course of my 50+ order history, I have grown very accustomed to everything being shipped within 48 hours and received ALWAYS within 10 days. However, they have recently implemented a new shipping change without any customer communication. I have a $200+ order that has still not been shipped and it was purchased 7 days ago. This is such poor customer service and customer communication. For a company as well-established as Thredup, I'm not sure how this change got approved without the proper departments weighing in on the impact it would have on their customer's shopping habits. I will really be thinking twice about ordering from now on.
I've been shopping with them for a while and now you can't click on an item to get the measurements. Lots of items say large, but most have been put through a washer and dryer many times. The measurements are very helpful because it gives me an immediate answer if something will fit me or not. Bring that feature back. Also the restocking fee is lame. I'm sure the task of returning an item is already calculated into the price. A restocking fee is simply another way of getting more money from the consumer.
My first three orders were so so. Some items were better than they appeared and others like the pants appeared to be dress pants; however, when they arrived they looked more like joggers. I'm very disappointed in my last order because I chose to bundle two orders totalling over 150 dollars and FedEx lost the package last week. They told me to contact thredup for a refund and thredup chat keeps showing not available after waiting for a representative for almost an hour. Not terribly impressed at the moment.
I bought three handbags and two are great but one must have been owned by a smoker and reeks of smoke. I never thought of this as a potential problem in buying secondhand clothes online. I bought two dresses -- one is very nice but the other has what looks like ink or grease streaks on it.
My orders have always been easy, clothes amazing, customer service was great, its wonderful overall. I pretty much only shop on ThredUp now because its so cheap, easy and high quality. What more could you want?!
If you are looking for cute clothes on a budget... shop here! I have been extremely satisfied with all items purchased. And anything that didn't fit I returned with absolutely no issues. Highly recommend!
I thought thredUP was a pretty good experience... i made $65 by sending in a bag of my son's old clothes, which is more than giving it to his cousin (big fat ZERO ha ha ha). I just placed an order too, so we'll see how that comes out. 4 stars - I would give 5 but they didn't have strollers :(( (((((
I've been using thredup since the box swap days. Great for purchasing clothing, but I find that selling to a local consignment shop is easier. The purchased clothes are always in great condition and as expected.
This website is ingenious, so happy to have found it. Not only do I constantly clean out my closets but I'm also able to get some great stuff at a discounted rate. And a huge plus: they donate and "recycle responsibly."
So back in the day when thread up was new they were really good at processing and letting you know why your clothes weren't accepted.back in May I sent them a box with 80-90 items about 10 of them were posted. Mind you I followed the policy and made sure everything I sent was either new with tags or barely used. As well as in trend. They took until now June 17 to process the boxes sent. When I saw the didn't add any items I contracted them and asked as to why. They couldn't tell me a reason as to why also the person on the chat only has its initials not full name. They says no reason needs to be given they just didn't accept them. Told them I want them back mind you this conversation happened one hour after processing he said all of them were recycle. What I think is happening lately is that if you send them nice and cute stuff they will steal it and say it was recycle which in truth I doubt. Don't send them any more clothes I promise they are not honest on how they process.
I sent designer apparel to this company, they kill you with fees. If you want to reclaim items, the processing fee alone, will make you feel as if it were not worth it. Save your breath, donate to Good Will, Salvation Army, Church or shelter, and write it off. This place should be investigated by the Attorney General of their State, which I may do, as they are operating loan sharking ring, but with clothing
I've sent in 120lbs. Of NWT and/or excellent condition items (Lilly Pulitzer, Michael Kors, etc.) and only made $350 of that thousands and thousands worth of clothes. Some of the NWT items were not listed as such (affecting the price/value). SO many items that they clearly sold (some of which were sold for over $20/each) were not eligible for payment.
They used to be an easy way to sell clothes, and I actually got a nominal but good enough payout back in the day. A couple months ago I sent them three cleanout kits full of NWTs popular clothes from Banana Republic and ElleandEmm, etc. I saw some pieces had sold. When I looked at my account, I saw several of my items sold but that they took a $14.99 processing fee for each of them. I'm surprised I didn't receive a bill! That's ludicrous! Will NEVER send clothes to them again. I hope someone sues them. I could've/should've gone to a local consignment shop or listed my items on Poshmark. Seller beware!
I was overall very pleased with the clothes I received but when I sent in the bag of my own clothes to sell, after 8 weeks of processing I got an email stating they couldn't use ANY of my clean clothes because of a "strong odor" like perfume, cigarette smoke etc. None of those things are true in my life. In fact, I make extra steps into making sure my clothes are as clean as they can be as I do not have a natural sense of smell. I do not use perfume. I wash my clothes in oxyclean based tide detergent. I do not smoke or even associate with anyone who does. Their accusations were not only unbased, but downright offensive. This company will no longer be getting my business.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
