thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I had recently sent in a few pieces to be sold with thred up. Some were bargain brand (forever 21) and many were purchased by me from the goodwill. I had also sent in many designer and higher tier dresses that I no longer fit. Only 4 of my bargain brand items were accepted and the rest were rejected. I had not elected to get items sent back to me as i hadn't expected my nicer, expensive pieces to be rejected. I will never use this site again. If you do want to sell with them, be sure to get your rejected items back. Money down the drain and i feel cheated.

Abhorrent

THEY Have hidden a policy about returns in where you select your shipping label. If you choose to use the free print shipping label option, you cannot get a refund for your items. They will only give you a credit. That's right, it's tied to how you decide to ship your return. Pathetic.

I sent in a clean out kit with several items. When they finally processed my kit I see that there are only 3 items out of the box put on the site for sale. When I inquired about the rest of my items I was told that they were stained and then trashed. There is NO way that those items were stained. The most expensive item in the box was a practically brand new quilt lined, leather Harley Davidson jacket. I wore it only twice. That jacket was NOT stained in any way. I can guarantee you someone opened the box, decided they wanted the jacket and took it. This way if they claim it was "stained" they can say it was thrown away and they keep the item. I dont recommend this site to anyone. They aren't trustworthy.

I have purchase so much from Thredup and return some items on 06/01/2022 the refund was completed however I have not received the refund as of yet. I spoke to a rep via thredUp chat whom advised that the request was completed on 06/03/2022 and to allow more time. I called back within that time spoke with another rep whom advised the transaction was completed on 06/01/2022 but fail which made more sense to me because the art I used was compromised and shut down by my institution however that should not have stopped the return back to my account. Suffice to say I will not shopping with thredup any longer. And I hope to get my money back on the return.

Not worth sending your items
June 16, 2022

They have too much coming in and they will just close out your packages after months of wait without putting anything on sale. I sent out lots of brand new items for kids and I was told they are out of style. My kids are toddlers so things were not older than 4 years. I think is unprofessional to say that they will put the effort to look into the packages when they clearly don't.
And I have been sending things for a while so I can certainly say that things were much different in the past when probably they did not have the same volume of items to process. They claim they do this for the planet when they clearly do not care at all about throwing away perfectly new pieces of clothing.
Very disappointing.

Very disappointed
June 13, 2022

I have used ThredUp for several years and had good experiences when they first got up and running. I feel they grew too large to handle the amount of clothes coming in and their customer service definitely got worse. The last box I sent in included a Burberry coat. Lo and behold when they finally processed my box after 3-4 months of waiting, the Burberry coat was not included and no where to be found. It was a challenge trying to get a response from ThredUp and when I finally did they didn't care in the least that my coat had disappeared. I have no recourse and am kicking myself for not taking a photograph of the coat packed in the box. They kept asking for proof that I'd included it so then it became my word against theirs unfortunately. I have no reason to concoct such a story nor do I have the time. I included it and someone that unpacked the box on their end must have decided to keep it or somehow lost it. My reason for writing this review is to remind others to photograph EVERYTHING that you send to ThredUp. It may come in handy should your items go "missing".

Horrible "company" - they send the wrong item and there is no one to help sort it out. Now I am stuck with a hideous top I never ordered unless I want to pay to ship it back. Buyer beware and do not shop at this mis-managed place.

Scam
June 10, 2022

Do not sell with ThredUP. I sent in 4 large boxes of clothes. A number of the items were high end designer and they weren't listed correctly. For eg: Dolce & Gabbana top was listed as generic and priced as generic. Armani blouse was listed as a dress.
Many items weren't sized properly and one Lilly Pulitzer top sold but I didn't get any money for it and they refuse to tell me why.
Customer service is atrocious.

They sent the wrong items, asked me to send them back while my actual package is late (2 weeks to be delivered). For a desiger purse that was described "excellent", there where multiple scratches from wear. There were many of the same items listed with different conditions and prices accordingly, which is normal for ThredUp. I purposefully purchased an "excellent" item thinking that I get what I paid for (again, these are all second hand clothings and bags). The purse i got originally listed $120+, i bought it with $107 by a discount, still more expensive than similar ones costing $59.99 after discount with lesser quality. The purse I got even have white fuzzies instead, looks like mold or lint, very much unkempt. When I asked for a partial discount or refund (since I'm already tired of printing, taping, dropping off all these wrong items), they said they can only give me upto 35% discount, which still cost more than the cheaper of its kind. The only way I could have all my money back for this particular purse dispite all the hassle of the past month, especially the past 2 weeks of this order, is to return it. The representative talked as if I was lucky for them to even consider refunding at all since the warehouse is already paid the return fee. That $8.99 cost is nothing to them, considering I have to still print it (cost me money as well), wasting another hour back and forth to drop off another package that was wrongly described. This is not the first time!
Sometimes, items are listed as "FINAL SALE" which seems intimidating to refund. Seriously these are all items someone was going to donate or throw away anyway! Why would ThredUp make it such a huge hassle for customers? When their message is to save greenhouse gas by using second hand, all these sending packages back and forth is a huge waste of their and My personal time and added pollution. All of these can be solved by: 1) Listing the correct descriptions 2) Sending the correct item according to the description 3) Treat their customers with respect (seriously, never seen any store bargains with their customer how much they want to actually give back). I hate to feel like I'm begging for a refund, but I rightfully going to claim it since they keep sending me the wrong things for the wrong descriptions.
Reconsider "saving the environment" with this app. It's just wasting your time while being one of the few or only options of buying second hand clothes for some.
Pics of compassion of prices and descriptions between the excellent item I initially bought and another exact model with lower quality included.

Four different times I bought jeans that were labeled as bootcut and when they arrived they were skinny jeans or straight legs. This is not my error and they should have refunded me instead of giving me a credit.
One time they said that they lost the pair of jeans that I ordered so they just sent me another pair that was nothing like what I ordered. Again they did not refund me they had to give me a credit. I am trying to use up this credit so I bought these pair of jeans and
I tried on jeans. I could not see or smell a problem. I put in WHITE tub in warm water to see if blue would bleed before washing. See pics. Disgusting brown gray filth coming off jeans.
Nearly vomited. Took immediate shower.

Stole thousands in clothes
May 31, 2022

I sent them a huge clean out bag all new items with tags attached included Gucci and Armani. I had checked to have my items returned to me and sent an additional email to that effect and they went ahead and donated half my bag they didn't select to sell which was thousands of dollars in new designer items. I feel sick.

TERRIBLE! DO NOT BUY FROM HERE
May 27, 2022

The clothes itself were fine. Nothing amazing. I ordered 4 items and returned 3 out of the 4. Shoes were supposed to be size 4, but they are literally size 7. The dress was shrunken and the pants were really ugly. I paid $100 CAD and for returning these 3 items? I'm getting $35-40 back because I have to pay $9 for shipping. GREAT! Just wasted $60 bucks. It should be free-return shipping for at least 14 days as with any other online store, as you need to TRY IT ON and see it for yourself. This place is generating millions-- yet they can't keep up with the same policies as literally every other fashion site? I waited 2 and a half weeks for my package to get here, and when I tried them on, I instantly knew I had to return them as they were not as I imagined. But, of course, I had to wait ANOTHER week for my package to be "eligible for return". Once I tried processing my return, I needed help with customer service, and for A SIMPLE QUESTION (which I could not find on their FAQ), took them at least 4 hours to get back to me on chat. Plus, navigating their crappy customer service bot is infuriating. I have bought stuff from SHEIN and Aliexpress with better customer service and return policies-- and that is saying A LOT. I guess all the people who recommend this site really find the needle in the haystack for them to endorse this store, because the crap I bought? No way was it worth nearly what I paid for. Lesson learned. I advise you, coming from a generally laid-back online shopper, to NEVER SPEND A SINGLE PENNY on ThredUp.

ThredUP? More like thumbs down!
May 26, 2022

I recently received my order from ThredUp. This was my first time ordering from ThredUp and unfortunately, it will be my last. I am very disappointed with my order. I'm aware that these are pre-owned, thrifted items but I didn't realize that that meant the clothing items that I purchased would have multiple, obvious flaws. I ordered four sweatshirts. Three out of the four were damaged in some way. One had a stain on the front, another one was missing the hood drawstring, and the other one had a very noticeable hole/tear on the back. These issues were not shown nor stated in the listings. ThredUp states on their website that "Anything with excessive signs of wear doesn't even make it to our site", but that was not truthful of the items that I received. I do not know if all of their clothing is washed before being shipped out but some of the clothes that I received had an unpleasant, musty smell to them. Their return policy is a joke; you have to pay for return shipping and a restocking free. Due to all of these factors, I will not be purchasing from ThedUp again. Stick to shopping at local thrift shops or garage sales in your area.

I've sent in bags several times- and always with high-quality clothing that has some value. I have never once received a confirmation email that my goods were received, reviewed, or sold. When I've checked the site I see they have in fact sold my items, and that I should have received a dollar amount/credit, yet only once in 5 years have I found this on my account. The system they use, of eagerly taking bags of clothing and then mysteriously never notifying customers that 1. They ever received the bag 2. That they sold it and for how much, and 3. What that sale translates into (dollars, credits?) seems unethical. As a public company I'm confused how they get away with this model.

Seriously, they take about 6 months to sort through your clean out bags. That would be fine if they were not THIEVES. This last bag, I sent them had designer items. With the possibility that the items might be too worn, I opted to pay the additional return fee. They happily charged me the $10 or course. The return was cancelled, but not the FEE. And, none of my rejected items were returned and the designer items were never listed. There are no checks and balances with this company. The consumer is really at their mercy to be honest about what is received.

Tried the thred up rescue box
May 9, 2022

Well... gave the thredup rescue box a try. So far I have to throw out 6 out of 25 pieces and I am not done looking at them carefully. Those 6 items were completely un-wearable. Holes, rips and material that was cut ridiculously wrong. Then, of the rest of the pieces... most have stains that I probably cannot remove and a few are brands I would never dream of purchasing, about 4 other pieces have all tags ripped out so I have no idea what they are or what size they are. There is also a leather jacket that completely started falling apart. I did not expect to get a box full of reformation dresses, but really? They should call it a junk box as most of it will end up in my garbage can. I am better off just thrifting myself and at this rate, it will be much cheaper! Chalk this up to lessons learned, but I won't be ordering any more rescue boxes... no thanks!

What a scam. I would have felt better giving my clothes away if I knew they take most of the money…. Complete waste of time. I sold 5 items and have made a total of $4.18, not even enough to buy one nice thing on their site.
