ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

The only reason I use ThredUP is because I hate trying to sell stuff on my own. You really have to go into giving them stuff with the idea that you are donating items and won't get any cash back... only then will you be happy with the outcome. I've sent in huge bags of clothes with new items (still with the tags on) only to have them never make it to the list of accepted items. They give you the option to return anything not selected. For $12 which can really eat into the tiny chunk of cash they offer for the stuff they agree to sell. They miscategorize clothes all the time and there is no consistency with the items the sell. I bought a pair of Dylan George jeans that were mismarked for their size. They were tagged way bigger than their true size, which is probably how they made it to their inventory in the first place. I've used them about 3 times and while its less work than trying to sell items myself, its still a pretty mediocre service.
I cannot even believe how bad my experience was with Thred Up. First of all, they returned about 75% of the clothing I sent them, Then they listed the items they did accept but at awful prices. Designer clothing that had never been worn! I was livid when I saw how low they had priced my articles. So I ended up with next to nothing from the sale of three items. The last item I have listed with them is still listed after about 6 months and I think I know why. The description of the item is all wrong AND the photo doesn't offer a true depiction of the article. Needless to say, I would never recommend these people to anyone ever.
This company basically steals valuable items from people. I placed a pair of very gently used Nike Kevin Durant shoes in a clean out bag with other items. My 4 year old son literally wore these shoes only on the basketball court. They retail for $50. They didn't accept the shoes and when I asked for them back, they said "sorry. We already got rid of them." Yes. I'm sure you did. Probably in the hands of an employee. I looked on their site and the items they accept are much more dated and in far worse condition then the shoes I sent. Never mind the fact they paid only $4 for 5 of my other items. Seller beware! Consign elsewhere especially if your items are of any value whatsoever.
I sent 2 large bags of ALL designer clothes, some brand new with tags still on and all in great shape and current in style- a lot of White House Black Market. That was 3 months ago. I've never heard a word from them since. I'll never buy another piece of clothing from them again.
I started using ThredUp to clean out my closet. I was really pleased with the brands that ThredUp accepts but was disappointed with the payout. I then became a buyer. I know the brands that fit me so when i need something I come to ThredUP first. I can count on the quality and i have not been disappointed.
What I wanted, fast service, as described. Can't ask for more!
Love, love love the cheap prices on all the clothing! Ever item I've received has been in great condition. Since I loved buying on the site so much, I decided to try selling my clothes. However, I was very disappointed. When I logged on to order my bag, I noticed you could only receive the unwanted clothes back if you paid like an extra $7. You also had to pay extra if you wanted real money, not just store credit. At a consignment store called Plato's closet, I do not have to pay either of those fees. Anyway, I decided to order my bag anyway and filled it up with about 25 items. When they finally processed my bag (it took like 14 days, Plato's Closet takes hours), they had taken 18 items and given me $21 dollars. That's like $1 per piece of clothing! I was so disappointed, I thought I was going to receive way more money. Although, I will continue shopping on this site, since the prices are awesome.
Love them! I sell and buy stuff often, It's a great way to afford brands that I otherwise couldnt.
I like buying thrift store finds because I get nearly new things and save items from a landfill. It's the fun way to recycle. ThreadUP always has beautiful, nearly new, clothing at prices anyone can afford. I feel confident the clothes I order will be in great shape. I have never gotten a shipment and found a small tear or missing buttons.
Honest products and honest delivery!
Very nice packaging and presentation!
I've been shopping with thredUp for around two years now and selling to them for about a year. All of clothes that I've received have been in great condition and exactly as described. Usually if there's a little star that there's a flaw in the clothing I can't even figure out what the flaw is because it's so incredibly tiny. I've also bought two handbags from them and have received so many complements about how lovely the bags are.
While selling at times I've been surprised by how much credit I've been given for some bags I've sent, and at other times it was less than I expected, but it all evens out. If I wanted to put in the work to sell on Ebay I might get more, but I know I don't have the time for that and so I'm thankful that thredUp makes it easy.
They recycled a pair of jeans that I had bought from the site only months before and never worn. They recycled hundreds of dollars in clothing (pay for the return in advance if you can) and they misvalued a designer handbag by hundreds of dollars. Try and sell individually on eBay instead if you love your pieces. I'm sure there is a thred up intern walking around with my "marked/unclean" Marc Jacobs blouses right now.
I have never had a negative or less than fully satisfactory experience with Thredup. Whether it is buying, returns or selling, my transactions are tracked accurately and processed timely. Absolutely ZERO complaints. Thanks Thredup for providing a much needed alternative to retail shopping in today's economy.
I was introduced to ThredUp about a year ago and loved it! I bought and sold and bought some more! The value was always great and the prices were awesome. Since it has 'evolved', the payout per bag has decreased substantially - even though the items are name brand and great condition and yet the prices have gone up. The selection that used to be available has been cut drastically as a result. I gave three stars because there's still some great deals and great products to be found, it's just not what it used to be.
I used to shop regularly at thredUp for clothing for both myself and my kids. Recently they changed things up and I don't think it's for the better. The shipping is more expensive now, you also have to reach a much higher price to get free shipping. The clothing has gone up in price as well and they have phased out certain brands. While everything seemed to have spiked up, my recent bag I consigned rang in at $13 dollars and change, although my items were listed for a tally of $50 plus. The sneakers alone I mailed in to consign were priced at $22.99. I am disappointed, will not use thredUp again.
I sent a large bag filled with current style business casual items from banana republic, jcrew, free people, anthropologie, and topped it off with a $200 pair of barely worn Hudson jeans that were too small for me. And they only accepted 1 item and gave me $1.40 credit! I should have paid the $12 to have my clothes sent back to me. I would have rather given them to friends. I thought I would make some money so I could purchase from thread up. Seriously!?!? What a scam!
I heard about this site from blogger, Pbfingers. I decided to give it a try and sent in a stuffed bag of Jcrew/Jcrew factory clothing. A conservative estimate that I expected was about $100. Again, this was keeping my expectations low. Pbfingers always seems to miraculously get $200 back whenever she sends in her clothes. I got back $47.25, despite the fact that they are keeping 11 of my items. One of the J crew skirts is being sold for $29. How do you figure, Thredup? I'm sure you're making loads of money scamming the people who sell your clothes, but unfortunately for you this model won't last.
After sending them clothes all according to their list of acceptable brands and with their suggested prices, expected about $75 in payment. Weeks passed before they emailed me that I would receive $22. No surprise there, I should have expected the scam. Now that four months have passed, I'm still waiting for that check.
Don't bother going through that company. Really not worth your while to go through the hassle of ordering their shopping bag, checking and listing items, mailing it, and not getting anything in return.
Did more research and the better business bureau has many complaints. Also, several other state agencies because of the complaints. I hope you post your complaint worldwide on Facebook, Periscope, Ig... This is horrible service. And custom service is a joke
I wish I could give a zero! I sent them probably 30 items. All gently used, some even still had the price tags on them. They took 8 items and gave me $15.63. I would have just gone to Crossroads and dealt with the mean girls head on and got more money. This place is such a rip off for the sellers. I'm so angry and then they have the nerve to ask me how my experience was. Do not waste your time selling your clothes here, they are thieves!
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
