ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

The prices seem awesome but sadly when you order the item and get it in, it really wasn't worth the marked up "discounted" price you paid. The pictures they take aren't that great and the descriptions aren't great either. Also, I wish the return policy was a little longer.
The clothes were not what I was expecting, especially since they were described as "like-new." The items I ordered for my Three-year-old daughter were not sized accordingly as they looked as though they had been dried on High heat for 20 years!
How is this business allowed to do this to people? Can we start a class action suit or something? ThredUP is scamming people by only paying 5% of what they make. Seriously, 95% for just taking pictures and posting it? People list better things on eBay for you and only keep 50%. ThredUP had to create their own site because they would NOT be allowed to do this on any other site. I received $8.75 for $174.81 worth of product they chose the list price on. That's only for the 19 items they chose to list. There were so many more NICE and in style clothes sent that were not even listed! The staff must get first pick of what they want first! If we want it back, we have to pay $10 for shipping. They made $166.06 off of the few items they listed. Use some of that to return it!
I sent 2 bags of clothes, very nice clothes with tags. They sold all my items and I was paid out $6.00. The second bag they recieved they actually took out postage out of $6.00 they gave me and ended up with nothing! When I called they told me they changed how they do things.? Total scam.
This company is a scam. They bought 13 items from me, and I walked away with $6. Nice clothes, with tags from places like Gap, Express, Gymboree, and even brand new shoes. $6!?! Seriously, just donate your clothes to someone in need. I will NEVER use or recommend this company.
PS- I checked and almost everything I sold to them has already been sold for $12+ each. This company is a joke. Don't get ripped off like I did!
Received $1.47 for a bag full of designer clothing in new or nearly new condition. Called and emailed with no response to my complaint. What is there else I can say about that?!
The pay out is HORRIBLE. I thought that ebay had taken a severe turn for the worst, this site is even LESS. I sent them enormous bags of clothing expecting to get at least 2$ per item. Boy was I wrong. More like 2 pennies. Try selling your garments on ebay or just dont even bother, keep them or give them to goodwill.
I've sent in 3 different cleanout bags over the years. It's always been a risk and an interesting study in their quality control practices. I've had many brand new items (with tags still on them) flat out rejected; I had one bag full of high end designer denim rejected. Yet somehow, they've accepted and sold (at a major markup vs. my payout) plenty of my obviously worn items while rejecting many perfect, mint condition things -- something definitely isn't adding up. Where's the good stuff really going? Not back to me, not for a $12+ return shipping cost. They clearly know their customers; we're not going to pay that much to get our cast offs back -- we're going to chalk it up to a donation and move on, at which point they can do whatever they want with our high quality items since we've released our ownership of them. They know this and it seems they're taking advantage of it. Formerly, I'd use thredUP to clean out my closet, knowing full well they were going to kick me down a few dollars in store credit and sell my items at a dramatic markup; I was more or less fine with this. I told myself it wasn't much different than donating to Goodwill, with a slight monetary benefit (except it takes threadUP *many* weeks to months to process your bag)... I'd use the small store credit from my dozens of items and buy maybe one or two things at their retail prices. (I've never been terribly impressed with my purchases from them. Most had obvious wear and fading; one pair of shorts had a completely blown elastic waist and were unwearable.) However, now they're charging $9.99 for a cleanout bag or offering users a "donation" option (Verbatim, "Don't send me money. I want proceeds from my bag to support thredUP's waste reduction and charitable donation program. *Note: At this time, thredUP does NOT issue tax receipts.") and I'm not sure I understand how this strategy benefits the customer at all. What if your bag is deemed worth less than $9.99? Will you then owe them money on top of having given them your stuff? What is going on here anymore? I don't want to find out the hard way. I'll put my good things on eBay, drop everything else off at a local thrift store, and be finished with threadUP for now. This service is a great idea in theory but it needs some tweaking.
ThredUp shipped the wrong size shoe to me and won't refund the cost of that item to me, even though ThredUp acknowledges I returned the wrong size shoe to them in a timely fashion and that it was in excellent condition. "Bait and switch" is a kind term for the outright theft that occurred by ThredUp. Since this is 100 percent their error and decision to take my money under the guise of offering store credit, I will not do business with them in the in the future and will share this awful experience with others.
Horrible business! Sent in a bag and they sold my items for 162.83. When all was said and done I received 16 dollars and some change! Unbelievable business practices. I will have nothing more to do with them and neither should you if you don't want to be taken advantage of!
Love the selections and the prices. They run some good deals sometimes and that helps lower the cost!
While I've never tried to consign my or my children's clothes, I've had great success in shopping for myself as well as my daughter. They do not offer cash returns, but I am fine with the store credit as I keep coming back for specific items to add to our closets.
I wish I'd read these reviews, but I was referred to ThredUP by a friend who'd heard about them but never used them. I sent in two huge over-stuffed bags of clothes and jackets. All we're never worn and a lot still had tags on them. I got $6 for each bag! I would've sold them on eBay! Never again! I wrote them two emails. Oh, and I must say, the clothes they had online looked bad - not as nice as mine, and, some were wrinkled in the pics. I hope people stop sending them clothes!
I have purchased several times and recommended ThredUp to my friends. I love how detailed they are with their item descriptions, including amount of damage (if any) and measurements. As a lady who can wear anything from S-XL, it is so nice when I can get measurements for clothes.
They do not give you good money for your things. I sent in 30 items all name brand great condition. For 8.00 in return! What a scam! Will never do business with them again...
I love the prices, the brands, the excessive selections, it's just a shoppers dream
THIEVES... SCAMMERS. They sold the clothes for good money and pay to original owners pennies. Then ask for a lot of money to returned and when cash out your few dollars the Visa Award Card do not work. Try to sell your clothes in EBay or give them to charity. I, will report Tup to the Consumer Protection Department.
These people are legal thieves. Don't waste your time. I would do better donating to charity and getting a tax deduction. I have really nice tings and they are pretty pricey. Thedup gives crumbs for them and they make the money. Now they've sneakily implemented a shipping and handling fee. I have given them a fair shot but they've shown me on 4 different occasions who they are. No more... Thanks Thredup, I believe you!
ThredUp is a total scam! I sent all brand new or barely used brand name items, including a brand new pair of Vera Wang boots, they accepted 7 items and gave me a lousy $2.65! What a joke!
I'll donate to my local Goodwill from now on and not some company making a killing off of ripping people off!
I sent in a full bag of new and like-new designer clothing (Anne Klein, Calvin Klein, Ann Taylor, etc. and a Coach bag). Six weeks later I had to follow up with them for payment and then was told my clothes were worth $12. I would have made 4 times this at my local consignment store. Very disappointed, I feel like this site is a scam.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
