Made a booking through what I thought was the hotel website, only to find out that I had actually been booted off to the "get a room" site.
Made the booking, and then once I received my booking confirmation, I realised that they had charged me over $250 extra worth of hidden fees!
Luckily I had "free cancellation and full refund" which I inquired about through email. No response given, just an automated email to say they'd cancelled the booking.
Initially I wasn't worried, figured I'd be getting my refund.
Several emails sent, they're now saying the payment was void and so there is no refund to be given. However, a total of $713.96 has been removed from my account for the booking and not returned.
They're now wiping their hands of the problem saying I should take it up with my banking provider!
Did they just scam me?
May update my review if I ever see my money again.
I thought I was booking directly with the hotel. Website is very deceitful and even used a very similar url to the actual resort. The price I thought I was paying just ended up being the nightly rate, but was very unclear while I was booking - was staying for 3 nights so I paid 3x more than what I thought I was paying. I called immediately to cancel and was told that I would not get my money back (which was a LOT of money). Was told I need to get approval from resort directly to not be charged anything. Got proof in an email from the hotel and they still would not refund my money. It is now 2 months later and I am still battling with them. Biggest mistake I have ever made! Also, the hotel hasn't gotten anything out of this deal - so if the hotel isn't getting any cut they aren't being honest with the hotel either. It's a shame there are companies like this! And I might just HAVE to sue them!
I accidentally put in the wrong date when I booked a room with getaroom.com. I called within two minutes to cancel and I was told that they could not cancel. Their customer service blamed the hotel for not being able to cancel. The hotel is not able to cancel third party reservations. Getaroom.com are the ones who did the transaction, accepted my money and claim to not be able to cancel. Their call menu has an option for cancellations. When you get to the person who does the cancellations, they claim they can not do the cancellation. A simple mistake with a touch screen costed $71.50.
Thought I was booking a room directly with the Heathman Hotel in Kirkland, WA (even had their website in the address bar) for $265.68 per night. Paid with credit card and charged an extra $113.56 "Tax Recovery Charge and Service Fee" for a non-refundable total of $379.24 from getaroom.com, an entity I had no idea I was dealing with. Called the invoice customer service # and they explained it was basically a "resort fee." Asked to speak with a manager and told none was available. Called again and after much haggling and excessive hold times they agreed to refund $26 and emailed me a help ticket/link to zen desk.com which required sign up/registration. Then spoke with hotel front desk who told me they had never heard of getaroom.com and said the hotel doesn't charge a resort fee. Struck me as a case for the Attorney General.
When we printed our confirmation, rate was over $ 100 from what we had understood was our total cost. Very misleading. Then we Tried calling the 800 number but no person would pick up phone. We tried calling 3 times.
Stay away from this website. Should have reviewed BEFORE we booked.
This is a total scam - they charged me $1944 but the cost for the hotel was only $1325! When I called about the discrepancy they said that there was nothing that I could do about it.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY AND BE VERY CAREFUL THAT YOU USE THE HOTEL'S SITE AND NOT ONE OF THESE SITES THAT PRETEND TO BE THE REAL HOTEL SITE.
Update 2: Received refund of charges that were in excess of the state and local taxes. But only after I used this website to place a 1 star review. Did not get anywhere when placing a call to the getaroom customer service line. Except nice music on hold. Could have saved myself time and effort if I took the time to make sure I was making a reservation on the hotel's website or by calling the hotel directly. Turns out the hotel website offered the room $40 less expensive than what I paid. Thanks to Sitejabber for helping to get attention from Carrie W. The Customer Care and Escalations re.
See below for update 1 dated 18 Jul 2019...
Initial Review: Booked a room with this site that appeared to be a Hyatt website. After making the booking saw taxes and fees were out of line with Texas tax rates. After researching a bit I found the site I booked with and placed a call to Getaroom customer service to get an explanation. After being on hold for quite some time I did not get an agent to pick up the phone. While trying to cancel on the website saw there was a no cancellation statement. Any major hotel chain I've used offers cancellation within 24 hours of the reservation. Unless I hear from Getaroom I will protest charges with my credit card bank and submit additional one star reviews on other sites.
Update 1: On the positive side I got immediate attention from the Sitejabber negative review. I will be receiving a partial refund in accordance with what I requested of Carrie from getaroom customer service. The latest email states I should see the refund on credit card in 3-5 days. When that shows up on my credit card I will up the rating from 1 to 3 stars for the prompt response to my Sitejabber review. In the future I will be more careful to check that I am booking directly with the hotel. Third party hotel reservations systems sometimes are difficult to distinguish from the hotel site if you aren't carefully looking at the site details.
The room was not clean at all. The shower had not been touched. The floors were dirty, you had to wear shoes. The refrigerator and mirror in bathroom was nasty. There were dirty washcloths left in the bathtub. There was no toilet tissue, it was only for one night so we survived. I definitely would not go back!
Agent booked me rooms that I never requested or agreed to! Wanted a two bedroom suite and booked me 2 separate hotel rooms. Spoke with supervisor who is requesting the recorded conversation between me and the agent! Still waiting. No need to book third party!
Update, I received a call from the rep at Get a room stating I would be reimbursed the fee less state and hotel tax, I did receive $162.00 (241.72 less the correct tax rate). I emailed the rep thanking her for doing the right thing, not for her assistance since this should of never occurred.
I thought I was booking directly with DoubleTree-Hilton via their site, apparently "Get a Room" redirected my reservation to them, there was no notification of this. In calling them they stated they had a contract with DoubleTree to redirect, checking with DoubleTree this was a lie. They charged me over $240.00 in what they called "Tax Recovery & Services fees" stating this was mandatory and they could not disclose per contract with the hotel... again a lie. From now on I am only calling in for my reservations. I am out the $240 plus, they said they could reimburse me $58 ONLY but again that never occurred. They need to be shut down.
I was looking to book a room directly through Radisson, and I was directed to getaroom website. I thought I was dealing with Radisson. After selecting the room and hitting "accept" the total cost came to $40 more than expected. When I received the confirmation email, it showed that there were "service fees". This was not disclosed when I booked the room. I tried to cancel and they refused.
When I got to the hotel, they told me the room was booked through Priceline! Why even use GetARoom when they turn around and book the room through Priceline, and then charge you $40 to do it? Total RIP OFF!
So, I rarely get upset but I booked a hotel through get a room.com accidentally (their advertisement made it appear to be the hotel I booked at). Anyway, I was asking questions on the fees quoted and told them I needed a room for 2 adults and 2 children. The lady came back and said, "Oh I can give you 25% off". I was like "cool let's book it" thinking I was talking to the hotel directly (my mistake). Anyway, I got off the phone and received the confirmation. The lady left off two children and booked us a petite queen room which would not hold my children. I immediately called back - like 3 minutes later and explained and asked for an upgraded room (willing to pay an upgrade). I was hit with a big NO and that it was non-refundable as of an hour ago (before I even called) and they would have to open an investigation. I could not speak to a manager either until Monday morning (the same time we were leaving for the area we were going to stay). I called the hotel directly and they helped me through it... but consumer BE AWARE - this company is a scam!
I booked a few minutes ago. I thought i was booking directly with hotel. Quoted rate was 196/night. After clicking confirm the "new" nightly rate of $225/night PLUS $100 in "tax and recovery fees" were added even though there was no disclosure about it prior to confirming the reservation. I called and asked to cancel my reservation but hit the usual "scripted" denial. Lessoned learned and I'll be telling my story on every social media platform I belong to. STAY AWAY FROM GETAROOM!
They charge a huge fee they do not tell you about after you agree to a charge. Plus I did not even choose this site. Lawsuit time!
We called the Best Western number on the first Google page and thought we were talking to them. Turns out it was this $#*! $#*! company that gave completely wrong info about applying our membership credits and getting a 20% discount but we only found out at check in that they are a third party and now we can't apply the discount. Could not get them to answer phone to even ask questions. Will be reporting to BBB.
Reserved a room. Over a week later the hotel still did not have my reservation. This was after calling customer service for assistance and no resolution. Calling is a joke, no options for direct help, agents hang up on you, extreme hold times. Their site says to call if you attempt to check in and the hotel does not have your info, so you then have to wait half an hour on hold to *maybe* get help with another room while you are stranded?
This place is a terrible site I recommend everyone use whatever other site you can site is not very friendly and I was on hold for a very long time
I had previously given a poor review for getaroom.com. I received a call from them to rectify the problem. The woman was kind and said they would reimburse me for the amount I was over charged for our room, with an explanation of how this happened. Very satisfied with how she resolved the problem.
I thought I was calling Econo Lodge in Rapid City, South Dakota. Was quoted a rate of 100.84. Upon getting to the motel they told me the rate was 63.75 and didn't why I was told it was 100.84. Come to find out my call went straight to Get A Room third party service. I would never intentionally use a third party! They said I accepted the rate over the phone and that is that! The motel told me these companies are very tricky about getting their phone numbers in hotel and motels websites. I feel cheated and defrauded. I will report them to the BBB. Don't know what else to do. They are scam artists!!
I thought that this was the hotel's website, but realized after booking that it was a paid ad post and a third party. After getting an email confirmation for a reservation, I noticed a $300+ fee that was included. Upon reading the fine print, I quickly realized that this was a scam. I called the 800 number and talked to a costumer service agent. After complaining, they said they would waive $75. I asked to talk to a manager, was put on hold, then told they weren't available. I was then offered 20% off of the total expense. I refused and demanded either a full refund or the entire fee to be waived. I then asked to speak to the manager again and was told they were still unavailable. Finally, I was promised that the entire fee would be refunded, but only after 5-7 days after check out. I am very skeptical that I will have a reservation and get a refund on the fee, but will find out in a month once I complete my stay.
** Update: I received the refund of the fee after checking out. I stand by my earlier comments and would not recommend this service/site to anyone.
I called to get the online price and the representative said yes they had that room so I told him I wanted to book 3 and he gave me more expensive rooms that I could not afford. They said they cancelled them and they didn't and haven't returned my money
Answer: They are not ethical. For me, they used a website that appeared to be the actual hotel website, did not identify themselves when they should have, and did not mention booking fees while they charged a 30 percent booking fee for a room that was its normal price. They were supposed to cancel charges on my credit card and did not. STAY AWAY!
Answer: They are a site attached to Trip Advisor---- if you see them on screen while trying to book a room-- hit cancel. I'm out over $150 because of their fraudulent cancellation policy.
Answer: Thought I was booking on the actual hotel sight but was deceived in as much as it was Getaroom. Talked to someone else also staying at this hotel at the same for about a third less. Called them right back and had already charged my card and it would be up to 3 weeks to refund. That's about what it took but did get refund. Then checked reviews and no one had anything good to say about getaroom. Go straight to hotel sight of one you know and trust or stick with something like Travelocity.
Answer: I'm definitely in. There's something very deceptive, if not illegal, when you start off on a hotel's website and when you click Make a Reservation, it somehow transfers you to the GetARoom site without your knowledge. I had no idea this was done until I received their email confirmation. I'm thinking of contacting my state's Consumer Protection Div. Of the AG's Office to file a complaint when I get back from vacation.
Answer: Call 800-468-3578 but good luck. They are scammers
Answer: Wow. This is one bad company. Made a reservation and then needed to cancel. They gave cancel date all along. I called to cancel on that date and was told that date was only for 1 minute of date they told me. I was supposed to forfeit one night's cost. Luckily I made reservation on AMEX and they'll tell this fraud company to get lost. Moral of the story: make reservations through hotel.
