I've bought several bikes over the years from BikesDirect, and generally they were all of good quality. However the latest has been a bit of a disappointment. The aluminum frame is fine but all the other "stainless steel" parts are very rusted, after only fourteen months. The spokes are particularly bad, but pretty much everything not aluminum is rusting. In contrast, a similar bike I purchased from them ten years ago has very little rust. Both bikes are stored inside and, being in southern California, neither see much weather. Customer service was not helpful either.
Had a problem with the rear rim on one of the two bikes we purchased. Looks like it had been hit from the side and made the rim out of true. Told me that's a problem that can occurs because the bikes are shipped thousands of miles from Taiwan and that's something I will have to have fix my self or have a bike shop fix. Yes their price may be lower but like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. I would go to a local bike shop the next time.
Late due to FedEx tension screw front assembly snapped due to the upper handlebar screw. Almost injured one someone. Look this product from manufacturer to seller to shipper has been a nightmare. Guess you get for what you get. I will blog about this as Tosh would in my own ",Web Redemption. "Returning this POS"
Can't believe that battery fitment was not tested before delivery.
Hours spent trying to get it fit properly.I do notice that the new advertisement mentioned that battery adjustment may be required, but that was prior to my purchase.I finally got it to stay in but you need to slap it hard to lock,or it may fall out.My did and damaged the battery.
Further the tech keeps telling me that the battery won't charge while on the bike because it's not adjusted correctly, that maybe but it should be a way better design,I've spent hours trying to get it right to no avail.
Apparently others are having problems too.
Don't buy it
The process of organization, service, the purchase itself high level. I already have a fully equipped mountain bike in my garage for travel and sports. Everyone who will ask about the product will receive an answer - SUPER.
Site seams to be a total scam. I've bought/owned many bikes over the years, and never had a problem until this one. The bike i purchased was not only different than what it was described as in the listing on their website, but when i tried contacting, i waited over a week and didn't get any response. Only after i denied the purchase on paypal did they respond, and they still try to claim it was my fault, and i should have known better. Their customer service is HORRIBLE!
No Advertising means The bike i bought Last week cost $735 shipped. I owned a bike previously with lesser parts group a decade ago cost $2400. Thanks, bikesdirect staff and The People building such great products.
After buying 4 bikes from them I know these are seconds from the production of branded bikes. Typically have following problems, wrong assembled forks, bent hangers, wrongly assembled cables, misaligned gears, switchers, brakes, bent discs, etc. Cheap but... BEWARE!
The bikes are pretty good, and unbeatable for the price from what I've seen. Mine required some replacement parts and extra service out of the box; Larry from Bikesdirect customer service was super helpful and responded promptly with good solutions.
I'll be ordering from them again and referring my friends. Thanks!
I bought the Dutch Gravity 14in Ladies for my wife. I returned it (paying $50 in postage) because it was much heavier than I expected, by 10 pounds or more, although "lightweight" aluminum frame was a part of the description. I have had great experience with Bikesdirect over the years; they, offer bikes that are a much better value than branded equivalents. But I believe Bikesdirect would do itself a favor by making bike weight part of the product description, especially for hybrids. In the meanwhile, buyer caution on weight issues is appropriate. I got it wrong and lost $50 a a lot of time as a result.
Received the bike 3 weeks ago and it's great. To anyone questioning that the website looks dicey I say relax. I've bought 2 other mid level road bikes from them. They were both great. My new mountain bike was great also. They have fast shipping and great customer service. If you aren't comfortable assembling your own bike then go to a bike shop. Bike came in great shape and assembled it with not much problem. I got a blue tooth shifter that I had to get professional help with for a whole 20 bucks now works amazing. The bike shop was amazed at what I got in my bike for 2100 bucks. It rode great. Don't hesitate and get a great deal with them. Thanks bikes direct again.
Received bike with a broken lever on the seat post dropper. When letting them know they said sorry YOU broke it. I explained to them It arrived this way, but they assured me they put on protection, and I am the first to handle it. They did send me a link of the part to buy and that they would refund me the 10 dollars but that would mean me ordering it online and then taking apart this tightly assembled seat post and try to reassemble it. I believe a proper response should have been we will send you a replacement seat post or the part asap. Very dissapointed on this online order.
Bought a new Gravity 29er full suspension mountain bike from Bikesdirect.com. Took about a week for the bike to arrive. Out of the box the front suspension fork was defective from the manufacturer so I emailed tech support. Larry at tech support was excellent and emailed me back in less than two hours and that he was very sorry for the problem and was sending out a new upgraded fork via usps priority mail right away. I received the fork within two days and finished the assembly the next day. The bike is awesome for the money and the customer support that Larry provided was wonderful. I've already recommended bikesdirect.com to several people who were unware of the company who were asking about my new bike. I will definitely buy again from bikesdirect.com and hats off to Larry who provided superior customer support!
I purchased a HAL 29 Comp Eagle in March of 2020. It has been a good bike for the most part. I recently noticed a crack in my seat post near the cross bar. I sent an e mail in with pictures and was told that my frame should be covered. I need to strip every part on my bike from the frame, mail it in with a return label to have it mailed back. I was then told that I would receive a frame replacement 6 to 12 months AFTER they receive my frame and evaluate it.
3rd bike I have bought from them in less than a yr. The last one I purchased was a Taz 2.7 mtn. Bike. The dropper post had a broken release part on it before I installed it. Contacted BD about the issue and the reply was as followed. So sorry for the broken post. Sometimes they get damaged when you install improperly. I don`t have one to replace it with. So sorry is right. No # 4 bike for me BD. Customer service is what it is all about. Your actions in regards to my problem are not acceptable to me. Just glad I never had a claim on the other bikes I got from Bikes Direct.
Received a $999 mtn bike from Bikesdirect.com today, the only instructions included did not apply to the bike. The bike is partially assembled which was expected, but absolutely no indication of how to put it together correctly. Some parts are assembled that you have to disassemble to get it back together. The derailer is just hanging from the rear chain which was knotted up. There are parts on both wheels you have to remove to complete assembly, but no mention of it anywhere. Even their website does not have instruction for this bike. Any bicycle company who does not have a 1-800 customer service number to assist customer with bicycle assembly should not be in business. They obviously know people will call it a lot. What a waste of time. Buy a bike from your local bike shop and save the headache.
I have purchased 3 bikes from BikesDirect so far and am a big fan. You can order competition-grade setups at entry-level prices.
Ironically, the bikes are so great that my first two got stolen, they do look great to both the untrained eye and to those who know what each of the components is worth. The components are significantly above what you'd get at regular bike stores. I tend to have the bikes professionally assembled, but it's not really necessary - doing it yourself takes less than half an hour as all the complex parts are already pre-assembled out of the box.
My most recent purchase was a Gravity FSX Monster Eagle - what an amazing bike! Each time I ride it, I get approached by biking enthusiasts who want to know more about the bike.
Great bikes, fantastic experience. Definitely a go-to place for anyone looking for quality bikes at reasonable prices.
Received a beat up box frame scratched and bent back rim! You can't even call them! Only email, number provided is to process payments only. Had to file a claim with PayPal thanks to there third world service. I highly don't recommend!
Elite 8 Motobecane bike lives up to expectations. The Shimano internal gear 8-speed hub is Great! I can roar up to the stopsign in high gear, stop, shift without moving into first for the takeoff. Positive and secure. Finish and components of the bike are good. BUT mine shipped with a flat tire on arrival. So I amout $8 for a new tube. Not a huge matter, overall.
A faulty tire caused the tube to explode 30 minutes into my kid's ride. They don't provide a warranty.
Do not use bikesdirect.com - my kid could have been seriously hurt. It could be you or your kid next time.
Answer: I would recommend that you think about a hybrid bike first, as the tires are larger & the 26 inch wheels are a bit stronger. Also, you will be more comfortable riding on an upright position. If you like it, use it to loose weight while saving for a decent road bike.
Answer: Hi - the bike depends upon the type of riding you want to do and what you want out of riding. Do you want comfort? Durability? Speed? More upright riding position? Definitely want to look at bikes with larger tires as they would be more comfortable. The CycleCross type bikes are fast but have a bit larger tires for more durability and comfort than a skinny tire road bike. Check out the OmniStrada which have knobbier and larger tires than the regular cross bikes. They also have top tech tubeless compatible rims which you can easily convert with sealant and kit to being virtually flat free :) Check them out: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/cross_bikes.htm
Answer: No. The bike should come ready to ride.
Answer: I ordered after hours on Wednesday night, recived confirmation of payment via PayPal instantly. Email receipt received Friday morning.
