ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I loved shopping with the ThredUp app and decided to try selling some things. I spent $9.99 on the clean-out bag and stuffed it full. It contained mostly new or like-new items, some of which included two pairs of brand new Hollister jeans ($50 a pair), Old Navy jeans with tags still attached, and several Ann Taylor Loft sweaters.
It took them two months to process my bag, and when they did I was notified that I'd get a whopping $4 for all of that stuff. With the price of the clean-out bag deducted, I got NOTHING.
Receiving no money for my items is okay if I donate them locally or give them to someone who needs them, but that was not the goal here. I wanted to tell them. Instead, I got mere cents for them only to have them later sold for a much higher process. The only donating I did was to their filthy, greedy pockets.
I never had any issues buying from them, but I REFUSE to support a business with no ethics and who screws people out of their money. The app has been deleted from my phone.
ThredUp disgusts me.
I would never buy and/or sell on this sight after reading the reviews! I hope one of you has called the Better Business Bureau on them. I'm not sure how they can operate based on what people are saying. Maybe there is a lot of small print somewhere?
I have been shopping at ThredUp.com since 2014 and I am very pleased with my shopping experience. I totally get and support their business concept. I love the organization of their merchandise on their website, the clear and clean display of items and the detailed information on each item. So overall, I'd say great merchandise, great prices, prompt delivery, but most of all fantastic Customer Service! The only thing I'd like to see with more consistency is Waist measurements on pants and skirts.
I never write bad reviews, but I had to with this one and will do so anywhere I can find. I spent the time to go through their list of approved and accepted brands, sorted my clothes diligently and only sent in items in good condition no more than two years old with brand names like True Religion, Sorel, Miss Me, Joes, Theory, etc with about 50+ items of good quality clothing. I sent in my bag on the April 16th, they just now today processed it and the results they sent me... I literally started laughing. They took 5 items of the lowest quality brands I sent it in, Rock of Republic, Cupshe, and Maurices and only offered me $6.00, are you for real!? I could sell more items and get a better return at the local consignment store. More importantly I regret wasting my time and should have donated the items to help people in need for a tax right off. I will never use this company again and will tell all of my friends not to waste their time because thredUP is not respectful of it. ThredUP if your listening, all your posts are negative. Its time to change or get out. Hope this post helps the consumer thinking of using your services and decides to pass.
I sent them a huge bag of clothing including Prada shoes and a beautiful Kate Spade bag and have not hear a PEEP from them! I bugged customer service to see where they were at with evaluating my stuff and I got some BS answer and no credit so far! Now I am scared and should have read reviews first! RIP OFF!
They gave me pennies for my items and so far have made more than $70 profit on 8 of my items. I genuinely wish I had just sent the stuff to Savers where at least any profit goes to charity. I feel cheated.
To give you an idea of their pricing... I got $0.75 for a Nine West Sweater that they are selling for $14.99. Also sent in BCBG dresses, a Dooney & Burke bag, among other designer products. I got a total of $1.26. NOT WORTH THE ENERGY. Better off donating to a foundation that won't take advantage of you.
Do not send them anything. They will keep and sell everything and give you peanuts. I sent in a full bag of practically new clothes and shoes. Some not even worn, with tags. Some name brands. They gave me $. 27. Yep, that's 27 cents.
First you'll need to sort out all of the EXCELLENT CONDITION items and send it off to them and then they'll accept the majority of the items and if you wanted the unselected items back then they'll charge a fee on top of that there is a shipping and handling fee. What else? Oh, then they'll practically tease you by emailing you every now and then how much THEY'RE MAKING OFF YOUR ITEMS! Ha. This is not a recommended site to sell your clothes people! You'll get better deals at Plato closet and we all know THEY RIP US OFF BADLY but better then THREDUP! So disappointed, I should of just took the time and sold on poshmark. Atleast over the years I've made couple of thousands on there poshmark. Enough said, if you're looking to make money, look elsewhere or just actually donate it to goodwill and know you did a good deed.
They give you 10% of what they will make from your items and they won't even take clothes in excellent condition! Do not sell them your things! I rather give to goodwill or savers! They are overpriced when buying as well! Seriously! SCAM
I mailed in a huge bag of gently worn kids clothing, all name brand. It took 21 days for the bag to even arrive at the facility and then I get an email that they are behind and my bag will not be processed for 6 weeks. Completely ridiculous. Then out of all the items I sent only 3 items were accepted for a credit of $1.70. Thank goodness I paid the fee for them to send my "unwanted" clothes back to me. I can certainly do more with them than they can. You can make more than that selling at a yard sale. I will never use ThredUP again. Complete rip off
RIP-OFF!
I sent in a bag of 30 pairs of top name jeans, cords, tops and sweaters... J. Crew, Hollister, Loft, included.
I got $2.50 cents total.
I went to the site and saw 1 pair of my J. Crew cords (my size and color) for $15.99.
How is this in anyway fair?
Rip off! Do not send them your stuff! Sent then an entire bag of baby boys clothing all worn by 1 child, new condition, gap, Carter's and Oshkosh, 70 items and I received $1.69 for a handful of items after bag fee. Would have rather donated to pregnancy shelter at church.
DO NOT SEND THEM YOUR CLOTHES- I sent in a bag full of rarely used or new (with tags) clothing, including a pair of heels that I would not be able to wear during my pregnancy. I sent in more than 20 of my rarely used pre-pregnancy clothing (multiple pairs of denim, new skirts, new dresses, etc.) with the expectation that I would use the subsequent payout to purchase maternity clothing from thredUP. Instead, I was offered a measly $4.97... and according to their posting, they're selling my items for a total of $72. It took over a week before anyone responded to me or my request to have my clothing returned to me, and once they did respond, it was essentially to tell me that "We provide our sellers with all the information they would need on our clean-out bag page and FAQs," so tough luck. I'm writing this review, because I really wish I had known that this is how thredUP takes advantage of sellers. Please beware - DO NOT send in your clothing unless you don't want anything for it.
I have used Thredup before and find it to be a great place to find reasonably priced used clothing and I appreciate that they also focus on being good for the environment. I haven't sent in a bag yet, but as far as purchases I do like the service. I wish I had longer to return the clothing though. Sometimes I just haven't even tried it on by the time it's too late to return it.
I've been selling with Thredup since the beginning. They apparently roped us beginners in with fair business practices then pulled a switch to rip off/scam city. They charge nearly $10 per bag, and now they don't even accept all of your "accepted items" on upfront payout. They choose whether to payout or put on consignment. The catch is consignment items post for a short time whereby they then inform you it has expired and with you claim your item or they keep it and donate it OR SELL IT ANYWAY W/OUT ANYTHING GOING TO YOU at a later date. So you figure I'll just get my stuff back. But you are charged a ridiculous return fee after having been charged the original bag fee. Listen to those of us who are trying to warn against this company. It is a rip off. It didn't start that way but it is blatantly so now. That CEO is a fat rat taking advantage of the little guy for sure.
I received some items but had to return one of them. I requested a shipping label but it was never emailed to me. I had to jump through a lot of hoops to figure out how to contact them, because there is no phone number. When someone finally got back to me over email, they said I was over my 14 day window to return when I only had the items 7 days. Now they won't give me my money back on an item that doesn't fit.
When I first sent a bag of items in, it wasn't too bad. I wasn't looking to make a ton of money on my stuff just enough to buy some new clothes, then they started deducting the $9.99 for the bag and shipping and the payout dropped. I sent a bag STUFFED with nice new clothes and after the shipping and the low ball payout I got a grand total of 0.65! I complained to their "customer service" and was told I would get a refund on the shipping cost to make it right, that was 4 months ago and still waiting. I also sent a bag of brand new boots (7 pair) and the bag was switched to donation, I never opted for that and once again was told by customer service that they would switch it back to consign, waited 3 months for that and got a measly $1.65. I am done with them, complete rip off!
I was just about to send in clothes and did the price estimator first. How can they justify paying. 70 for a shirt they sell for 24.00! Same with Polo, cents for a shirt they sell for 14.60. People! They are taking your clothes and selling them for themselves. Complete rip off.
RIP-OFF central and I am simply going to contact the Secretary of State office off consumer affairs.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
