ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I sent a large bag of beautiful clothes, professional ones. I made sure each one was new or like new, laundered, pressed, neatly folded. The site gives you a general idea but I feel totally ripped off. I saw a few pieces online and they deducted $5.00 for the bag already. I might cash out and decide what to buy with my $ 2.21. Next time I will donate my clothing to organizations that help women dress for job interviews. NO MORE thredUP for me. Total waste of time.
A friend of mine told me about ThredUp and how she shops their resale site. She hadn't tried a CleanOut Bag yet, but I thought it sounded like a easy way to earn some money while doing some spring cleaning, so I decided to give it a try. I literally feel like I've been robbed! I sent in over 30 items (Boden dresses, JCREW dresses and separates, Gap, Banana Republic, H&M, etc.) They paid me $11.61 for it all! REALLY? I could've donated it to Goodwill and got a better tax write off, let alone sell one of the Boden dresses on eBay for triple that amount! BEWARE! Don't use their CleanOut Bags; it's not worth the loss. (I sent in my CleanOut Bag back in April, and although the $11.61 is in my account, I can't "Cash Out" until June 28. Man, I need to start one of these resale websites. They are making a killing off of you, because you are actually giving them your clothes. DON'T DO IT! Lesson learned on my part... RIP OFF!
I ordered 8 pairs of pants for my daughter. ALL 8 pairs of the jeans were listed as a size 10. I double checked each item before ordering to make sure they were not a 10 slim (I even searched by size 10 regular). When my items arrived (in about 6 days) 2 of the 6 pairs of pants were indeed size 10 Slim. So, I went back to my original order that I placed online just to make sure that I wasn't losing my mind that day and missed that I had ordered sizes 10 Slim on those two pairs of pants. I hadn't.
Call me crazy, but if you continually send people the wrong sizes on 25% of their order you will not be in business long.
This website had a good start in the beginning. Then they got greedy. I recently sent in a bag of name brand items including a Michael Kors bag. They now charge $9.99 for clean out bags. It took over a month to review my items. I was told my items costs less than the price of the clean out bag. How is this possible? Where did my Michael Kors bag go? It went right into their inventory selling for $49.00! But I received $0? Educate yourselves before attempting to sell. I will never give them another dime.
My bad that I did not look at online reviews of thredup before "selling" with them - just google "thredup reviews" and you will see there are literally thousands of complaints regarding selling. My experience was essentially the same as Nellie's - sent 22 items, most with tags still on from stores like Ann Taylor, J. Jill, Banana Republic, so on (in other words, no low-stuff) and got a whopping $9 payout that, once they deducted their "costs" meant I got basically nothing. How does a company get away with this? They deserve to go under and I will tell anyone I know.
I used to enjoy thredUp, and didn't mind that I didn't make a ton of money, as on their website it says the donate what they do not use. However, recently in my area they started charging to process the bag, and I made $0.54. Seriously? I follow all the guidelines, and nothing in return. I'm not okay with that... And, you can not find anywhere that states where they actually donate what they do not accept; I won't be going back to their site, they can keep the change.
ThredUP has been a favorite option for finding low priced designer clothes since I first discovered them. They are super convenient and when items don't fit, the process to return them is very easy. Always excited to get my green polka-dot box.
My bag has been in "transit" for almost a month, and I purchased the return insurance. I emailed them once and asked about it (frustrated), and was basically blown off like others have said. The second time, I replied and said that I would like my items "returned" since I had purchased the insurance to have them returned. They could not locate the bag and offered $75 immediately crediting to my count for cash out before I replied. I replied and told them what was in the bag and they issued another $125. So, I ended up getting cashed out for $200. I don't know what is going on with this company. The reviews are all over the place.
I really enjoyed shopping on this website although recently their prices have increased two fold. However, I just underwent the process of sending them a bag in hopes of making a profit but I was deeply disappointed. They accepted 8 name brand items from my bag and promptly decided that they were collectively worth $10. However, after adding the prices they had listed them they would make a profit of about $100. I understand that the company also pays for shipping and handling, but 10% is not worth my time. I'd rather sell it on my own or give the clothing away to Goodwill.
I really used to like them, altho their clothes aren't always the best deal. I also liked being able to send in a bag as I was decluttering my closet. However, this last time was ridiculous! I sent in about 16 items with half of them with tags still on (Bebe, VS Pink, etc,) and relatively new due to a weight loss and my total was 1.00. The other items were put "on consignment," with an expectation of about $10! I would have been better off either donating or selling at Platos Closet. This experience has put a bad taste in my mouth & I will no longer shop there. Very disappointed.
Here is an example of something that just sold on consignment. This is an example of what you are looking at for the money:
Selling Price: $27.99
Your commission: $5.60
Money Available on: 7/2/17
WOW - I might as well have tried to sell on ebay or donated it for the money I received.
This site is advertising looking for plus size items. I sent in a Bob Mackie maxi dress and a Notations maxi skirt- each worn twice, cleaned and in perfect condition. So these items are in style, in season and supposedly a size they are really seeking. For these two items, they decided to make them upfront items and pay me a whopping $1.00 for the two items. There were other items not accepted and a pair of jeans they are listing for $20 and if they sell quickly, I will supposedly receive $3.00. I won't be holding my breath. Also, they do take entirely TOO LONG to process the bags. Finally, don't try to look for an email to contact them, they have none. I really should have looked for that first, its a dead give away.
I purchased a cute dress from ThredUp a while back and loved it. However, when it comes to selling with them, do not do it! I sent them a handful of really nice, clean, and trendy pieces (not to mention that they were all in good shape). They only accepted two of my items and when they sold, I only got 75 cents for them! I was super pissed because the clothing I sent in was really nice and I definitely thought that they were worth way more than 75 cents. I emailed them and they didn't really give me any solid answers. It says on their app how they decide what to price things and how much you make off of them but I don't understand why my things were priced so little so that I only got 75 cents for them. I guess it's to make things cheaper for people that are buying. I'm a college student trying to make some money and I basically lost money trying to sell clothes to ThredUp. Please do NOT buy or sell with them because they do not deserve it. Sell/Buy with Poshmark instead! I love them way more.
I purchased a clean out bag from thread up, sent it in the end of April. Received an email stating they couldn't process and sort my bag till June 8th. June 8th rolled around with no notification that my bag had been processed. The next day I signed into the app and saw I had a whopping $14.00 credit. Which I didn't ask for a credit, I wanted a return on my clothes! The items I put into the cart were like new and all within a year. Minus a few items. Some were brand new $50-$100 (with tags still on) Express and Bebe items. I sent these items to thread up in hopes of getting at least a $50 return after the $9.99 bag clean out fee. I know that thread up posts their disclaimers about how they do business... however, YOU SHOULD NOT BE RIPPING OFF YOUR CUSTOMERS! Be honest about how you do business, I would have rather donated the items now instead of selling to a company LIKE YOU who takes advantage of its customers and makes a crap ton of money off of dishonesty. You should really reconsider how you treat your customers. Trust me the cash cow will stop rolling in once enough ppl realize this company is crooked! Stay away from thread up, just donate instead. At least you know the clothes are going to someone in need, and your not lining the CEO of the company's pockets.
There are "great deals" on ThredUp only because they rip off their sellers. They blocked me from responding to them on social media for saying this, but I can see that other sellers are saying exactly this each time they post.
If I'd known that I would receive under $5 for a full bag of brand name clothing, I would have donated them to a worthy cause instead. ThredUp said they didn't accept many of my items, but identical items in identical sizes were on their site within a couple of days.
If you're cool with other folks being exploited so you can get cheap stuff, go for it.
This is the worst ROI I have ever encountered. 14% is not a good return for me on my 9 items. My things were not old, most things were NWT from Talbots or never worn.
I will not use this site again to resell. It seems like a great thing and could be if they would increase my profit.
This place is bologna. They didn't accept half of my things that were BRAND NEW. I gave them a coach purse thinking I would get a good amount for it. They didn't even accept it! I am never doing this again. I want all of my things back.
They advertised an article of clothes as being woman sized. It was child sized. They proceeded to give me a store credit upon return as opposed to refunding me (the customer service representative insisted I had chosen that method of refund which was false). I attempted to use my credit. They deducted the shipping amount from it. So basically they sent me a child sized shirt and then monetarily penalized me for having believed their description of it as an adult sized shirt.
I sent in 3 huge bags of almost completely new clothes to my daughter outgrowing clothes. Anywhere from brand new clothes still with tags on to jeans and dresses etc. The one bag they took as donations not cool but then they say that they can't accept the one bag because of a strong odor (laundry detergent etc). Wtf if you want the clothes laundered before sending them it sits in a sealed plastic bag before it's processed for months; which I'm pretty they are not stored in a climate controlled warehouse what kind of odor are you looking for? Then they'll send my items back for $9.99 or they can keep them and donate for you. I could donate on my own or sell them myself! IT'S A FARCE! DO NOT USE THEM! MORE PAIN THAN IT'S WORTH!
I was really worried after reading so many horrible reviews. I was moving so I sent in 3 very full bags. My expectations were low because I found so much negative information online (after sending the items in).
To be honest, a lot of the stuff I sent in was several years old. All of it was "brand-name," but mall brand-name, not Gucci or LV. I did send in a Rebecca Minkoff purse in okay shape and they didn't pay me for it.
They did take my 5 year old Kate Spade sunglasses, a thrifted DVF dress NWT, and a hodgepodge of other random items. My total pay out for the three bags, including the consignment items (among them, J. Crew jeggings, 5 years old), was about $60.
Honestly, I'm fine with this. I would have given everything to Goodwill anyway, because I was moving. I think that's the attitude you need to adopt with this service. Send them the stuff you would've taken $0 for and try your luck. One of my bags made $42, another made only $5. So it's definitely hit or miss.
Finally, I agree with other reviewers that making you wait 2 weeks to cash out is really ridiculous. Please let me decide if I want to spend a credit or take cash on my own. And selling to this company makes me never want to buy from them because a lot of what they accepted of mine was, like I said, 5 years old and definitely in moderately used condition. (E.g. A Free People bodycon dress I wore countless drunken nights as a college student, replete with pilling and fading).
Best of luck, to sellers and buyers both. I would try it again, when I have nothing to lose.
I sent a bag so full of plus size clothing all great condition pulse two designer purses. The bag was so full i could hardly carry it. They kept 16 items and not the purses that I could of sold at a garage sale for at least 30.00 each. I receive 14.00 for the whole bag and no clothing returned. I would of rather of set the stuff on fire how horrible to take all my stuff
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
