ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I have been thrilled with thredUp! I was very excited waiting for my first polka dotted box and even more thrilled at the condition of the clothes and shoes I had ordered. The only problem is that I'm becoming somewhat addicted to your site!
This is the worst site. They try to lure you in with the 40% off for new customers. One thing you should know about that- they block off about 25% of the merchandise, the good merchandise, while you have that coupon available. Once you have used it, magically, the better things become available. When I first joined they were not available- my family had the same experience. My daughter tried to buy things that were available on my account, but she could not. They said we were in different service areas- but all of us are neighbors! And once the coupon was used, the wanted items became available. We cancelled the order and asked for the coupon back, to buy the wanted items now that they were available. But as soon as they gave us the 40%, the items became unavailable again! SCAM ALERT!
Then we contacted them. My daughter has to live with me because she is disabled. And when we contacted them and they saw we have the same address, they closed BOTH of our accounts, saying we tried to scam THEM. We explained that we are separate households. She is an adult. I am an adult. Same address. Separate households. She needs living assistance, so has a place with me. They do not accommodate alternative households. I explained that this is discriminatory and very old thinking- many people live in multi-generational households, with roommates, and have other situations that vary from the nuclear one family per address household. They will not restore my account. And I am unable to log onto my account to cancel this order. My daughter and I each receive about 5 emails a week from them still, even though her account is closed too. We have contacted them daily to stop this. We click the unsubscribe each time, but because our accounts are closed, it will not let us log on to unsubscribe! Every time we contact them, we receive a form email that says they will reply in 24 hours but we have never heard back and we still receive the emails. We filed a complaint- about all of it with the Better Business Bureau. They did reply to that and said they would communicate about all of it through there. And they have not replied about any of it to the Better Business Bureau. Apparently though, many people have had problems with lack of access to merchandise, and other scam type behavior by them, which they claim to be 'glitches.'
Also, it says free returns, but that is only if you take site credit. And the information on the sizing is often wrong- particularly for children's clothing. If you search a children's 12, you may receive a 12 month dress or a 12 women's dress. Most things, you can tell from the picture, and style but once in a while, it is unknowable.
Easy. Gave me the push I needed to clean iut my closet and my kids. I get money to buy new (to me) second hand things at a great price. I can return easy and reahop with that money. I hate paying shipping and now-a-days I can usually get away with it, but it is reasonable enough. Maybe a rewards program of some sort would be cool? Like third order is free or something? Also love the fashion snapshots and highlights on social media and the site. I tell everyone. I now have a permanent 'sell' bin next to my long standing 'donate' bin. Its like i have money hanging in my closet. Love love.
Ordered 9/30. Left warehouse 10/4. Due date the 10/8. The 10/7 I received another notification that package would be arriving 10/12. I had to purchase what I ordered from them. Replies to my emails take 2 days. Package has been sitting in Dallas since the 6th. Dallas is a 100 miles from here and always a two day mailing route. Pretty much lost my love here. I ordered a swim suit for hydrotherapy because I pretty much disabled. ThredUP stressed me out.
I have used Thredup as both a buyer and a seller. My buying transactions have all been smooth. I have kept a number of things and returned a couple. Shipping is quick, and returning is easy. I just suggest reading the return policy thoroughly prior to purchasing. I, personally, don't like the idea of paying shipping costs for return items, so I opt to keep the refund as credit on the site. Overall, items have been as described. I will certainly buy again.
I also recently sent in my first clean out bag. It included name brand items in new or almost new condition. Plus, I tossed in a few older more worn items. No designer labels or anything high value. I had a mix of shoes and women's clothing. I read seller reviews before sending my bag in, so I expected to have only a few items accepted. Out of about 32-33 items 29 were accepted as I received around a $50 payment. I was happy with this since the items I would have just given away normally. I would recommend selling to Thredup in these types of situations. When you have nothing to lose and might make a few dollars. :) Also, they will price your items according to the rates they believe the items will sell at. Their terms do clearly list the percentage you will make at each price point. For example, on items listed at $14.99 or under you will receive 5%. On items under $19.99 you will receive 10%. Out of curiosity I did crunch the numbers on my 29 accepted items, and they did pay out according to the guidelines listed on their website. I think this site is fine, I would just make sure to be aware what you are agreeing to in advance.
As a denim-loving short-legger, jeans that fit and that I can afford are elusive. ThredUP not only carries the outrageously priced jeans that fit me, but gives the deets on the measurements. A few pair were hemmed, which is an even bigger savings of time and money. Brilliant!
Thredup is a great opportunity to purchase slightly used items & also to clean out your closet of unwanted items.
I find amazing deals on great quality clothes, I've paid more for coffee than I paid for a pair of jeans!
Good experience with buying, but selling took two months (after being told it would be one), little communication while waiting and I was very unclear about selling process, not sure which items were accepted or why.
I heard from a friend that he was going to quit shopping at the store and order his clothes from thredUP. So next time I saw an ad for thredUP online I decided to try it. It was for a sweater/jacket and I really liked it. So I ordered it. When I received it, it was as shown in ad and fit well. I made no trip to store and saved money on the purchase. I liked it so well, I have ordered my second item and am sure I will be happy or they will return my money. Thank, Miles, for the tip!
I share the thinking of this kind of business. For me it is not necessary to spend a lot of money to look good.
The descriptions were accurate and the packaging and shipping were awesome. I'm very happy with the entire experience.
ThredUp always does a great job both in customer service and the products are always awesome. And their shipping is insanely fast, every time. Always super happy with my experiences there!
Very pleased with items I ordered. Great selection, great price, great quality.
I have ordered 2 with Thread up, 1st order I sent back because sizes listed are not true sizes. 2nd order the shirt is ok, the sweats are way smaller then advertised.
I have always loved thrift shopping, and having it online makes it very easy to find inexpensive clothing that looks and feels amazing
I loved the three long sleeved shirts I got but unfortunately the shoes were a bit big so I sent them back.
They make the return experience very easy.
Everything I've received looks like new, fits perfectly, and was accurately described by thredUP. My favorite "go to" sight for shopping
I found superb blazers, handbags, shoes, and more that were like new and priced at a steal. Getting compliments at work, at school, and everywhere I go. It has never been this easy to find my style, my size, and my colors in top quality and at guilt-free prices.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
