ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Started my ThredUp experience this summer and after about 1,5 months my first clean out bag items were posted and my payout was $81.55. The >35 ish items included were NWT, New w/o tags and very gently used women's and kids attire, mostly name brand, all known brands. I thought ok, at least Im getting some $$ in addition to all the goods I donate. Then for the next 2 bags, with very similar items, each bag packing more and more goodies, less items were chosen for posting and I received significantly less money per bag at $52.15 and $35.55. Hmmm. Additionally two of my items, a dress and a sweater, were initially listed for just under $60 but were later revised for >$60 and sold. I should have been paid differently if that was the case as items over $60 are 'consignment'. In either case I had already sent in two additional bags when this information became available so I was in it for the long haul. My next bag was to be processed by 10/26 but since the delay, the bag is simply being listed as 'processing' without a date. And bag #5 is due to be processed by 11/10. Let's see what happens with these bags. Which btw contain among other things two brand name never worn NWT coats. All of these reviews make me wonder whats' going on at thredUP. Is it they are simply overwhelmed and understaffed or something a bit more shady? I will reserve my opinion until these next two bags are processed and come back with an update. And FYI- they are not sending out clean out bags any longer, with a message stating to check back with them in January of the new year...
So far my experience I'm totally pleased using thred up. They don't accept trash but they accept a lot more than Plato closet. Plus I can check out what items are selling out of the bag 9f clothes j sent. I love it thanks
I sent them several like new clothes, a girls nike shoes that my daughter had worn only three times and they gave me less then $1,39 for just one of the sweaters, everyhthing else they did "not" accept to sell, and "supposedly" donated... Yeah right! Don't think so... This is a scam! They are getting tons of good clothes for free, selling it for a LOT (goodwill is way cheaper), and paying out to us a fraction of what they sell it for... Very unfair way to do business... Not sending anything else ever again... Rather donate it for charity than be fooled by this business.
I've been very happy with the clothes I've received from thredUP. The quality is great and I'm usually impressed when I see the clothes in person after looking at it only online. Also a great way to donate old clothes and get something back!
Here is my actual statement:
Upfront Payout
Our specialists have carefully reviewed your bag. After examining each item, we've determined that the total upfront payout for the items we will be able to resell is $6.65.

So, they will be deducting money from my account so I can pay them to make money selling my items. How does this racket stay in business?
Thanks, but no thanks.
So this is my fourth time sending bag to thredUP, sent about 20+ pieces of baby clothes, some of them are in top quality, I expect them to accept at least 50%. But guess what 0% accepted and charged $8.99 from my account. What a joke! I'm done with it, closing my account. I'd rather donate to a local church or shelter or Goodwill, at least I can get some tax credits. Oh, at least I don't PAY for what I donate.
Grey give you pennies for your items - it's unacceptable and greedy! I got 19% and they got 81%! Seriously! Better off donating or selling on my own!
Always very clean and folded clothes, and delivery is quick
Don't use threUP. They pay you pennies for you clothes. You are better off selling it on your own. They pay $1.00 to $2.00 for your items. For that I can sell my stuff my self for 1 or 2 dollars. And if you think you are getting paid quick, forget it. It will take about 1 month or so to get your money. I tried it once and I won't do it again.
On September 15th, 2016 I shipped many items that my local consignment shop would not take because they were too high quality for what they would accept (shout out to platos closet, Dubuque, IA for not knowing a single thing about fashion). On September 21st, I received an automated email saying that they received my bag and that it would be processed by Monday, October 31st. Okay should have been red flag #1. How could it possible take over a month to inspect 15 pieces of clothing? On October 16th, I received an email from Anthony S. Marino thanking be for sending in my first bag. He was emailing me to ensure I was happy with my experience. He shared his experience with ThredUp, and welcomed feedback, stating that "I read every one of these emails. I am no a robot; I am real!" I work in marketing automation so I know this was an automated email, I'm not stupid. It also stated at the end if I had any specific troubles about my payout or technical issues, to contact *******@thredup.com. Saying "They will dig right in and get you a speedy response." I waited a few days and emailed him back saying that I haven't received any form of payment for my items and asked for any information he may have on my bag. I checked my thredup account online and it said that my bag was processed and I was receiving $0.00 for my items. It said something about sending items back to me but not option to click send back to me, or even a tracking number. Nothing. No respond from Anthony, so a week or so later I contacted support from the website stating my issue. Still no response. I sent another complaint in today and still no respond and see that the automated email came from "kintwits" which was different than the first complaint I sent in. I sent Anthony another email and still no response. There is also no number to contact anyone. I am getting a lawyer involved and searching their sight for my items to see if they are selling them. This is outrageous that a company like this is scamming so many people.
My first experience with Thredup was purchases. A few worked out, but many items did not. One item was missing a button. A second item was actually a child's garment listed as an adult size. Emails to customer service went unanswered, and it wasn't until I filed dispute with my credit card company that someone responded. For whatever reason, I did not receive a full refund, but at that point, I was so fed up that I just dropped it.
Then I made the mistake of sending in a huge bag of clothing that was in excellent condition - some items still had the tags on them. After more than a month, I received a grand total of $3.50. I thought it was a joke!
Honestly? Don't bother.
Don't waste your time sending them anything. I sent a bag full of name brand shirts, some shoes and boots and they sent me an email saying they couldn't use anything and also took over 2 months to tell me. TOTAL RIP OFF!
I sent a bag of brand new clothes. All tags taken off, this is where the joke is on this company. These clothes were all name brand like under armour, nike etc.
When I received my pay out it was $11 and not everything was taken. I contacted them, which then they responded with the reasons why they didn't take the other items. The problem I have with this is, not every item I sent was listed, so where are my items? Also, I was told that some items were stained, how can that be, they were new?
I was told that people at this company "stain" and take items. With that being said I will be taking this further and possibly to court. I have proof of all items and when they were bought. These items were never worn!
Recently packed a bag with Polaryn O Pyret clothes, Burberry and Ralph Lauren
Could not believe that they had the nerve to send me 8.00 for the bag.
Totally ridiculous!
Their customer service never responded.
Below is a breakdown I received from Thredup on 3 items still with the price tags on them. They gave me a $1.90 for a pair of never worn Anne Taylor Dress Pants still with the tag!
Coldwater Creek Casual Dress 6 thredup listing$23.99 your payout $6.00 ($109.00 price tag)
Coldwater Creek Cocktail Dress 4 thredup listing$21.99 your payout $5.50 ($199.00 price tag)
Anne Klein Dress Pant 6 thredup listing$18.99 your payout $1.90 ($71.00 price tag)
Better off going to a consignment shop! Would never recommend this site.
I sent them designer items including a ski jacket bought last year in Whistler, lots of Nike Dri-fit tank tops and other items... ALL never worn... All with original price tags. Since I've sent them these items I've been spammed every day with "Hello smart shopper" trying to entice me with pictures of clothes that I would never be seen in. They said that the clothing that I sent them had been worn and had no value. I could only suspect that the "inspectors" of the bag may take the items. Hence the email. I'm trying to unsubscribe to the " Hello smart shoppers" spam that they send and cannot. I will never do business with them again. I would suggest that others either donate, themselves, to worthy causes or sell on Ebay.
How can you justify giving me less than 50 cents per item? You have sold 5 of the 13 that you kept for a total of $40.95. I got about $2.50. How can you do that? You definitely cheat sellers. I wish I knew how to warn others. This is horrendous and just plain WRONG! For shame...
I should have donated my clothes to a shelter... instead, I netted $4.75 on 16 items of clothes I sent in. Half had tags from stores like Loft and Nordstroms. Despite their reasonable prices on clothes, I will never shop again. I don't like businesses that thrive on the backs of others.
With 8.99 shipping now added for bags sent in and lower fees for clothing I sell to them. It is no longer worth it. I will use a local consignment shop after over 40 bags I have sent in.
I spent over an hour picking out two jackets. I did not receive them but was charged from them. Very disappointed
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
