Overcharged

I wanted a one time number. I paid through PayPal and specifically told them I did not want the full subscription. Well I just got billed for the fill subscription. I called and they graciously have me 9.00 dollars back.

They will scam you into monthly subscriptions!

I attempted a search for a phone number and according to Spokeo, it had returned some results and in order to access the report I had to pay $0.95. It felt like a small amount and so I decided to proceed, what could go wrong? Boy, was I wrong! Firstly, the search result was absolute garbage and contained nothing reasonable then over a week later I realized I had been billed $35 CAD and was now on a monthly subscription for $35 CAD a month! If I hadn't caught it early, I would have ended up paying these scammers hundreds of dollars for absolutely nothing! I didn't even bother fighting for a refund, it was the cost of my foolishness for not reading reviews of this company before using it. Fool me once!

They scam you
January 24, 2022

I was trying to get an email address. I paid $0.95 to get a "report" of contact info, and it only contained the street address. I would have to pay $19.95 to get a further "report" -- with no guarantee of what info would be contained therein. So I didn't go forward. Next thing I know, a charge shows up on my credit card statement for a monthly subscription of $24.95. I never signed up for that! These people are deceitful. However, when I called in to get the charge removed, the CSR was very responsive and took care of it.

This is a fraud

They will charge you 0.95 for a search, which basically waste your money and get nothing. After that you will find auto charge every month for 24.95 on your account. I already called the back, and anyone what a group lawsuit to sue this company?

Fraudulent
September 7, 2020

I paid. 95 for a one time service.
There is now an unauthorized charge from my account for $24.95.
I clearly chose the one-time service only option, yet I was fraudulently charged additional payments.
I wish I had seen the reviews prior to using Spokeo.

Unauthorized charges

If you accidently click on something, Spokeo will do a charge of $49.95 without even alerting you that there was going to be a charge because they already have your credit card #. After you pay to join Spokeo, all you get is names. If you want more info you have to pay for it. You can find the same info for free on peoplesmart, com whitepages.com or pipl.com etc

In order for a Spokeo subscription to be created, a user must navigate to our website at www.spokeo.com and either click on the "Sign Up" button or perform a search and click on the "Get Full Results" button. The user would then be required to enter in a full 16 digit credit or debit card number along with the card's matching security code, cardholder name, card expiration date, and card billing zip code. A valid email address is then entered that becomes the username associated with the account. Once this billing information has been entered, a Terms of Use agreement is checked by the user and then a "Purchase" button is hit. Once these actions are completed and the information is verified as valid and matching, the user must then fill out a brief survey and set an account password to begin using the subscription. A purchase confirmation receipt is also sent to the provided email address. Also, Our database covers a multitude of social networks, public records, marketing lists and more to reveal demographic details, public profiles, etc. Since there is no human involved, the data is not verified and might not be accurate. Moreover, many sources do not refresh their data often. Our Terms of Use states clearly that we are a Search Engine, and do not create, maintain or modify any of the information you see. For this reason, we cannot guarantee full or accurate information for every name, phone number, email address or username you search for, as the results vary so much from person to person.

Dishonest

They say the charge is $0.95, but in the fine print they state there is an additional charge of $24.95; very sneaky and unbecoming of a "legitimate" business. All charges should be mentioned CLEARLY up front, not buried in the fine print. Worse when I call, They do not give a full refund, even though the service was used only once!

I actually don't have a problem with spokeo. It has helped me to see which accounts I have at different sites that may be visible to others and to go to those sites and either remove my accounts or make them private.

For self protection I would suggest searching for yourself through name, email and other search options. Then see where you may have public info about yourself and either remove that info or make it private on those sites.

Spokeo can be used to your benefit in some instances like this. It can also be helpful when you are getting unwanted emails, etc... to identify the sender who is offending you.

If you make yourself not visible on spokeo by going through these routes (if this is what you want) it can be a great tool.

Many of our users have implemented our service to successfully locate forgotten accounts with various sites, and deleted them. Additionally, they skirt their charges on their website, advertising 3 months for "$4.95" in bold black, with "/mo" (they won't even spell out "month" because you might catch it) in much smaller, light font. Then the real charge, "$14.85", appears at the very bottom, in small print, at the end of a standard checkbox that few people will read.
Reminds me of the auto salesman in Fargo trying to pressure sell a customer on an expensive anti-rust package. What Spokeo is doing is legal... it's just not moral or ethical. Don't buy anything from these people... they go home and smirk at themselves in the bathroom mirror.

The standard check box at issue does require the check-mark to be manually clicked, and does link directly to our terms of service, for which more detail is included on our entire service. This ensures that there is more than one place on the payment page at which the full price is mentioned. Furthermore, the payment is a one-time payment for the entire subscription term. The listed rate of $4.95/mo for three months is accurate, as our customers are charged up front a total of $14.85 for the entire period. Ripoff!

Ripoff! Their information is out-of-date, incorrect, or "not available." I paid $39.95 for a year's subscription and the next day contacted them to ask for a refund because the info was so bad on every search. They explained their "no refunds" policy but did offer to give me $15 back. Don't waste your money!

They're customer service is top notch, the site does what it says it will do and while some people may not like being billed automatically for a subscription that they've forgotten about, Spokeo doesn't do any sort of behind the scenes "scammy" behavior. I was very satisfied with them all around.

A bait and switch scam.

At the "free trial" stage I specifically requested not to be entered for recurring monthly billing. They did it anyway. Okay, I'll try anything once. First search produced useless, general and false information.
To obtain more data requires a substantial upcharge. I don't think so, guys. Not today.

I was trying to look up an address I lived at 30 years ago and used Spokeo. The Google ad said it charged $. 95 for a one time fee. Instead they charged my account #24.95 pert month. When do I called and c complained, they would only refund $9.96. This is a ripoff company. Don't use it!

Incorrect billing
August 5, 2023

I had a trial 7- day trial subscription for $0.99. Before the trial ended, I canceled to avoid future charges and received a confirming email. Ten days later they charged me $29.95. I called customer service. They would not refund the incorrect charge. Avoid this company, there are better opportunities out there that don't take your money without authorization. Search Google reviews on Spokeo, this is the #1 complaint: unauthorized charging. FRAUD.
