As a pro with Thumbtack for over nine years I finally terminated my account today (11 Mar 19). Thumbtack billed me $3.95 twice today AFTER I warned them not to do this, even after my account was deactivated.
Please be aware of the following:
T. Sends out duplicate leads, which I've responded to in the past, and still refuses to refund money when this is brought to their attention.
T. bills me for inaccurate leads or leads I've outright declined.
T.'s favorite phrase for Pros is "What's your availability?" I've answered many of these requests and have received about one response back for every ten I spent time on.
T. is greedy with a non-responsive customer service department. Formal on-line complaints and/or disputes are ignored. T. needs Pros to function but it's a pathetic one-way street with their lack of quality control and more importantly, lack of professionalism in dealing with Pros.
Stay away from Thumbtack. They are definitely bad for your bank account and your peace of mind.

Have been on Thumbtack for more than a year with 113 reviews, only 2 1star,
They dont care about their PROS that make them money, and charge you hundreds without your consent, its worse now than Home Advisor,
Dont bother
I've been fortunate enough to get to eat some of the delectable foods made by this catering company. So fresh, and the blend of tastes is exquisite! Desserts such as Fresh Fruit Muddle, Banana upside-down cake, Chocolate Crème pies in chocolate almond crusts... Fresh crème almandine and pistachio filed croissants... and not just desserts! There was Creamy Cauliflower soup with celery root, Beet deviled eggs, Herbed goat cheese stuffed peppers, Sweet goat cheese sweet potato canapés with candied pecans and cranberry chutney and balsamic glaze, homemade chicken pot pies, Braised short ribs... These people know how to blend their herbs with their foods. I wish they could cook for me every day of the week!
Thumbtack is scamming people out of hard earned cash. See real stories on pissed consumers.com
How can they explain a viewed email that was never viewed?
Posted ad for housecleaning services. Was given a name of someone who works in my area. She emailed me and said she would call. I never heard from her again
Wow! What a mess!
Simply put... THIEVING LEECHES!
And i am almost certain, this "outfit" is pulling these "estimates" out of thin air!
One example- given a lead that has already been completed?
Sure everyone has their own choice's to make(when it comes to this "co")...
My advice, DON'T DO IT!
Your better off doing the "cold calling" on your own! That way you get ALL THE MONEY!
These are freeloading leeches! And nothing more!
And besides... THEY HAVE TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!
DO IT FOR YOURSELF!
I used Best rate moving for a local move. Best thing I ever did. They were great! Thank you Bam, Willie, Jhon and Kenny! I'd use them again in heartbeat.

This used to be a great company, building up their business by having a functional online platform, fair prices and good treatment of professionals, very unusual in their industry and obviously a huge breath of fresh air! After they grew, they very gradually became greedy and corrupt. It is one shady move after another in pursuit of freeloading money from professionals. Prices for their services have increased about 5 times in the last year or so, I don't think we have had even 10% of that of inflation in our ballooning economy. Their latest scam, they change your travel service preferences without your permission so you get many irrelevant and unwanted emails. When you go back in to change everything to your own original preferences, they try to force you to do some promotion thing and essentially get on a auto-subscription set up even if you don't want to. They are going straight down the toilet and I have stopped using them for a while now already. There is no nice way to say it when a company tries to take advantage of its customers in these ways: Greedy, worthless and doomed!
Diana Kaeding teaches Voice Lessons in Bradenton FL and I have been going for a couple of months now and will continue. I wasn't sure I could sing at all (just a beginner) when I first began lessons, but Diana has really helped me tremendously. I recommend her highly!
Thumbtack is a waste of money and a rip off. This is coming from someone who used Thumbtack for almost 5 years before deciding to walk away. They charge a pro like myself (I am a DJ) between $15-50 per "lead" when you sign up for their Instant Match service. Most of these "leads" don't respond at all, let alone hire you, but you still get charged for being matched with them. All it leads to is small business owners throwing hundreds of dollars away each week for zero results. Logically, this would lead to small business owners raising their prices - but don't do that, because Thumbtack has no shortage of vendors who low ball the market. $200 to DJ your 6 hour wedding? Sure, no problem! Stuff like that.
Oh, and if you choose not to sign up for Instant Matching? You won't get jobs in yoru area - they will only send you jobs that are 100-150 miles away.
Bottom line: this company got way, way too greedy and started gauging small businesses. Now, it's basically impossible for small businesses to afford their services (not that they care). DO NOT USE THEM.
I am precision paint and design in Massachusetts and a Sherwin Williams contractor of 30yrs with non stop consistent 5 star reviews... 2 months ago I notice the agreement I had with thumbtack and a 4 contractor bidding system was fine... now 6 contractors are paying for as low as a 1 bedroom lead for painting,,, 6? You kidding me? After 30yrs and my stats show people stop answering calls from contractors on these sites after 2-4 tops. No one speaks to 6... thumbtack has claimed customers want more contractors and blame them. However this is a straight lie on national stats in marketing for contractors across the board... my 5 star rating when I bid, and then appear for an appointment am usually the stopping point for customers. In other words if they have a couple more estimates set? Normally they say we want you and will cancel those appointments... so the customer is normally satisfied with us so 6 need not be in my universe of leads... none of these want 6 or most even 4 contractors calling or emailing, they get sick of it fast. Anyway I guess and know you don't care about me or any contractors and but for warning other contractors this review is futile to change a thing in the greed of selling the same lead multiple times... another home advisors and worse on 6,, they don't even go that far.
I used thumbtack to find a landscaper. Dunn 2 perfection was good the first year. However at some point, their bookkeeping and communication turned very bad. I sent many emails that informed them they were wrong about me being behind on payment. They would agree and apologize. This happened at least 3 separate times. It got to the point I had to take snapshots of cleared checks and send it to them. Just this June, they abruptly stopped coming to cut our grass. My husband called and he was told they mistakenly thought we were behind. The woman called us back to say they would be out there that day or the next day. It took 3 days for them to show up and we received no call or email explaining why. The day after they cut the grass, I got another invoice saying I had a past due amount. What?! This was just addressed a few days ago on the phone. I promptly emailed and asked which month was in question because I was ready for a response. I had already pulled out all my checkbooks and went online again to take screenshots. I got no response. I sent that email over July 1st (7 days ago). I will send payment for one month of service and be done. Maybe I'll get a reply when they see the check is less than the invoice. That's all I ever wanted--a reply. Poor communication and questionable billing.
Won't be using thumbtack again. Had a patio poured with cover only to find out after the fact that the contractor isn't licensed. Used cheap material and wouldn't use again.
They told me I could join and get leads I paid $200 I didn't get anything I tried to cancel nobody would have call me back in the time frame 10 days. I did not get one single lead in 1 month the guy that I joined from told me I was going to get leads his name is Chris this is the worst legioneration platform I've ever used in my life
I wish there was zero stars as a rating!
This is a scam! I hired a handyman to put locks on two doors. He showed up 2 hours late because his wife made him breakfast? Then when he got to our home he did not have the right tools to install the dead bolts so took another hour away to go to the hardware for tools? A job that should have started at 9am for an hour on a Sunday took all day!
Then I tried thumbtack again for pressure washing our home. I received a text response from a contractor at 12:16 a.m. which I did not see till the next morning. He told me I costed him to loose $11.00 and not to waste his time? I had no idea what he was talking about... he later texted me that he was made that I requested multiple bids for the work and flipped me off with a emoji! Who does this?
I requested quotes on lawn mowing and without even looking at our yard in person was quoted $ 80, $50, $40, but none of these people could outline what they would do for these dollar amounts? The area to mow is under 600 ft. The $50 quote was from a contractor who advertises under 1000 ft. Mowing, trimming. Edging and weed eating for $25? Then I call thumbtack to make them aware and the guy who answered my call took my complaint as a personal attack and hung up on me. Their calls are recorded but when I called back to speak to management, I was left on hold for 25 minutes, so hung up and wrote this. Thumbtack can't be legit. Ever contractor I have had any contact with has been as flake trying to get your credit card number on text messages? Who does this?
AFTER THEY TAKE YOUR CREDIT CARD FORGET IT. AFTER MULTIPLE TIMES OF TRYING TO CONTACT THUMBTACK NO ONE EVER GETS BACK TO YOU AND THEY SAND LEADS THAT ARE NOT EVEN IN THE CATAGORY OR WORK I DO OR SIGNED UP FOR
I put my limit at 40 bucks for leads, and over night they took 200 bucks! For customer service all they got is a damn robot text. If you want too get robbed theyre the best
Right for people crappy for contractors they charge $300 deposit plus they charge you to bid plus they want a percentage of the job by the time it's all done I have to charge the customer eight times what I usually charge than if they just called me on my cell phone for a job because I have to pay them to get it it's not worth it and if you don't get the job you still have to pay them I hope they go under and never open another page it's not worth my time
Thumbtack was great at first it was simple and ro the point with decent quote prices. But like everyone else that has a good thing going I'm sure they dragged in a bunch of empty suits with "fresh ideas " and ran it into the destructive course I'm about to lay out. Basically the old system was pay to quote this job but they charged a little to much so I'm sure they had a lot of refund requests. So instead of charging less and not having to refund everything they literally tripled the prices on what they called "direct quotes" and entrapped you by sending you only requests from hundreds of miles away. This way you would pay for the bull$#*! more expensive requests. Anybody could see the scam there but the best part was when they upgraded my service and started charging my credit card for leads I didn't know I was getting because I stopped using their crooked service regularly. I would like to give them 0 stars I got my money when I complained to my bank because they wouldn't refund me. If any anyone reading this is in a business like thumbtack open the flood gates to succeed and charge no more than 10 dollars for a lead because most are tire kickers and craftsman don't like dumping money into an ocean of online deception
Fraudulent charges for leads that do not meet my job description. I was recently charged for 3 separate service requests that were labeled as financial planning, which is the service I provide. I responded to leads that were labeled as such. When the leads contacted me to begin service, they each individually described their needed service to be something other than financial planning, such as tax planning, and business planning, which I do not provide. When contacting Thumbtack about this, they said that since I sought out these jobs in their opportunities section, they are not responsible for the job, and I pay for the lead no matter what. This basically means... if someone advertises for financial planning, and it turns out they need a roof leak fixed, I am responsible for paying for the lead even though it was falsely advertised. The definition of fraud is wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain. This definition fits what Thumbtack is practicing in.
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. If anyone has specific concerns about certain requests you’re receiving, we’d be happy to review them and see how we can help. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we have an amazing support team that is just waiting to talk to you.
Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
