They advertise linking you up with people who either have a room or need a room, but when you message, or get a message, you are REQUIRED to purchase a membership before you can read that message.
Complete scam.
Nobody can use this site unless you pay, and nobody would since there are free options out there. Useless site!
I get lots of responses to my advertisement, I respond immediately and never hear back from the interested party ever again. All i see is that roomates says the response violated their terms and they delete the response. So you never get a real response. This smells really fishy
It's a waste of time. There are few individuals on it, that's assuming they are real profiles. You can't message anyone to find out because you need to pay for all contact with anyone. It's not free. It's not useful. Use Facebook, Craigslist for roommates. Both free both more chances of finding someone.
This is the 2nd time I tried using this site. I have never received a message. I get 10 a day or more on Facebook.

For a website where you pay money to communicate to potential roommates, you'd think they'd better security and screening for scammers in the website. 3 out of 4 people I've conversated with tried to scam me. 1 of which almost got close for me to sign an agreement.
The person faked me with pictures of the apartment, a convoluted story and history of the apartment, and a picture of ID which was probably stolen and taken as a scam. I luckily researched the address and found out that the listing was a false one, and confronted the person which ended with no reply. The person left with a picture of my id, and minor information, like my address. Which he could probably use to catfish another...
The website will come up with BS about it not being their fault, and that it is a "billboard" website. But if its polluted with scammers, then IT IS your problem. You guys have an obligation to crack down on these things especially if you're charging people money for a service. More then just deleting their posts after its too late. Its like hotels saying its not their fault if stuff gets stolen in people's room and saying, "we only provide shelter". Trash website which doesn't take responsibility on a major issue.
Hello,
It's unfortunate that the website did not work out for you. The website is the same as answering an add in a newspaper and is only meant to be a means of contact so you do have to be careful and do your research. We do have Safety Tips posted on the messaging page.
Hopefully you have found a roommate to move forward with.
We value your comments and they will be taken into consideration for future site improvements.

Tried to sign up, got to the upload pics piece and it would not load any of my pics, kept giving me a message "Had a bit of a problem getting your image!" so I tried craigslist and they uploaded just fine. Next, I tried clicking into customer service to try and resolve the pic issue and... nothing. It would not open any type of dialog box, no email or anyway to contact customer service. So I decided to check out their reviews to see if others have the same issues and after seeing how bad their overall ratings are I decided it's not worth the headache.

The site encourages you to sign up and create a profile without ever revealing that you have to pay a fee in order to read the messages that people send you. It's only after you've put in the work of creating a profile, and you get a notification that someone sent you a message, that the site reveals you have to "upgrade" in order to read the message.
This is obviously intentionally deceptive on their part. If they wanted people to make an informed decision about whether to sign up, they'd say right on the front page, "If you create a profile, you have to be prepared to pay or it won't work."
This also allows them to make deceptive claims about how many users are on their site. They can count everyone who creates a free profile as a "user", without disclosing that most of those "users" abandoned their profile as soon as they found out they had to pay.

You'll create a profile and then see a bunch of others. Most of them are lame, no surprise, but some people put real effort into creating them. If you want to read messages or reply to them you have to pay. I paid $10/mo and have now messaged about 50 people. I wondered why nobody replied, but then I realized they would have to pay to reply. It's basically a scummy scam of a website. This pricing model sucks, and it makes it nearly impossible to actually use the site. They should at least give paying users a way to filter to only see other paying users, if those are the 1% we'll actually be able to contact.

This site is pretty nicely laid out. And seems to be effective at finding roommates. BUT this site is a professional scam. I made a listing looking for a roommate at our house. I received multiple messages and with curiosity I paid for a 3 day membership to read and reply. So it seems that the responders now need to pay to read my messages if they don't put their contact info. That a scummy tactic. If one side paid, why don't allow other end to read and reply no matter what.
BE WARNED! This site was built to function as as professional SCAM.
I'm sure they will post some copy and paste response on here…

The site has low activity; same rooms appear month after month.
Messages are not prompt, so by the time received the person contacting you may have disappeared or taken a different room depending on role.
Quality of the users varies, and nothing is vetted -- not the renters, not the landlords.

Fine a roommate female relationship girl roommate get pay me live here 1117 south 74th street west muskogee Oklahoma
A few days after signing up for a free account I received a 'perfect' match to my criteria. I then paid for a three day subscription (fortunately only 3 day) and after messaging the 'perfect' match, that profile disappeared.
I believe roommates created a fake profile so I'd pay to message the person.

The % of people who use this site to find housing is tough to gauge. I have an active listing for a room to rent, but less than %30 even bother to write a story. Of those that do, the story is so lame like "i have my own transportation", it makes me want to cry and orlaugh and write poetry. Make it a pay to use platform for everybody and your ratings will take off. As for allegations of false listings, clearly there are some, but my feeling is that the source of these is outside predators. My experience has been so poorthough that i do not plan to renew my subscription.

This website allows you to reach out to "‘matches" it assigns you based on your given criteria in a message board. However, once you receive a message, it alerts you with a notice saying in order to view this message, you must sign up for a paid subscription, and makes no mention of this until you have a person who responds to you. Not a helpful website for any purpose, would not recommend to any roommate requesters.

This is the second time I have tried Roommates.com. It's cheap, 10 bucks a month but it's still a waste of 10 dollars. I have found people use it as a dating site(I'm a women, if I'm looking for a date I'll go on Match)
The people I have approached that have a listing start giving me all kinds of excuses(I can't show the room for two months, I'm renting it as Airbnb right now, etc) If you don't have a room, get off the site!
I feel like people are on there for giggles just to see how much they might get...
Waste of time!

So I hardly got any responses. Even if I did get a message, the person wouldn't be back on the site for weeks. I responded immediately to inquires and would never hear back. This site is a scam. I gave them 30 days worth of my money - never again. Why can't these sites be shut down?
Answer: Yeah, if you are looking for crazy drunk high on drugs kind of people and it doesn't matter if you are male or female, after a couple of weeks, if that, they also get this crazy idea that they own you and can control your every thought move and somehow make themselves believe they are not renting a room, but using the web site to find a wife or husband type without the vows! This is not just based on one incident, but an average of 8 years of using the site on both sides. First I was renting rooms and the same applies and then I needed to rent a room which the same description applies. But understand, it is an web site for others to use. The users are the problem, not the site. It is amazing what I have experienced with all of what I said. I would think of another solution if I were you unless you want to learn as I did and I don't think it is a good idea. I would not write this if I did not know it all to well to be 1000% TRUE! I do not understand what these type of people are doing? Maybe they are a little to lonely or because you are renting a room or you need to rent a room that you do not have your own life and therefore they can take advantage of your sanity. I'm not sure, but I sure have had enough of these people for the past eight years that I have moved on to other roommate sites. Guess What? The same thing! Sorry, wish I could give a thumbs up, but No Can Do! Good luck
