Yes you do have to sign up for a membership in order to read incoming messages, but you are able to send messages for free and include your contact information in your messages so that only one you have to purchase a membership in order to communicate outside of the website. Many users have been able to find a roommate using the free portion of the site in this manner. We hope your roommate search goes well.
