I roomed with Richard Leiser and he was the worst roommate ever. He is renting a room in his house in Aurora, CO. I roomed with him for ~4.5 months. He would go on tantrums weekly, he never cleaned up after himself, constantly complaining, and I really think he is bipolar. I would STRONGLY suggest to avoid this person at all cost. It is not worth the hassle to live with this person.
It's pretty much a pay to message people site. I like the concept, but you really shouldn't even let people sign up without making them subscribe. They're using a hook technique that makes you think you can do something, somewhat teasing it (such as getting a message or viewing other's images), and wont let you until you pay money. Show you what you want, but won't let you use it unless you pay; pretty cheap tactic. Also, who's signing up for a subscription to find a roommate? That's something you do once, not for months at a time.
Besides the sites lack of any real use, the user interface it pretty bad overall. It looks like a pretty dated site and a lot of UI elements are handled incorrectly (i. E. the tabs above "Your Matches" don't look clickable). Strictly from a UI and UX standpoint, the site is pretty bad as well (you not supposed to use pop us for all of your messages).
Hello,
Thank you for your suggestions. We will definitely take them into consideration for future site improvements.
You can always send out messages to other members for free and include your contact information in them if you would like. You can also put your contact information in the comments section of your profile. At first I was very skeptical about using any site to find a roommate so naturally I went to craigslist. I should have known that I would find scary, crazy and shady people there (I'm sure there are some good people out there, just hard to find through all the scary). I wasn't too sure about paying for roommates.com but I soon found out there I had way better options and their site was very user friendly. My fiancé and I now have a new friend! And not just a roommate.
Spent the 20 bucks, received ZERO emails for my posting or replies to emails i sent. Within days after my upgraded account running out, I started receiving emails. TOTAL SCAM. Sorry roommates.com, but that's oldschool dating site scammery from the 90's and easily recognizable. Immediately deactivated account, only to find now i cannot delete my account. Certainly so that the website can use it to scam others, which is yet another dating site scam from 2 years ago. What a total fraud site. Stay away. Far away.
Hello,
My name is Jessica and I am one of the Relationship Managers at Roommates.com.
I am sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction with Roommates.com as well as the fact that you feel misled by the website with regard to the upgraded memberships. Please understand that you are able to utilize the website without purchasing a membership and many of our users have successfully found roommates this way. You do not have to pay in order to view matches. That has never been the case. Certain aspects of a profile may not be available to you if you have not paid but you are still able to view the basic information of the match itself and send an
Email to the potential match. As stated previously, many have successfully found a roommate using the free portion of the site. They send their contact information within emails to other users and many post their contact information within their profile description for other users to see. So while it is true that without having a paid membership you do not have the benefit of being able to read emails that you receive, you do still have the opportunity to achieve your goals while utilizing the free portions of the site.
As with most websites, there are added benefits to purchasing an upgrade. Those benefits include having full access to your emails as well as being able to view larger photos, maps, and the comment sections of other member's profiles. Purchasing an upgraded membership can be done at any time. Many individuals who utilize Roommates.com wait to purchase an upgrade
Until they have several emails waiting for them. This way, they fully maximize their upgrade.
With regard to deleting your account, you absolutely have that ability. You can click a link within your account to deactivate the account. When that occurs, your account is immediately removed from any public search. It is deactivated and after 30 days it is permanently deleted. Roommates.com does not use any account for any purpose. Accounts belong to the account holder and there is absolutely no reason for Roommates.com to use it.
Finally, with regard to fraudulent accounts on the site; We're doing all we can to stop the
Scammers. Our Staff performs daily scam searches on the site looking for and banning any scam accounts we find. Additionally, we have implemented several new security features we believe will reduce the amount of scamming activity on the site as well as some new features
That assist us in locating potential scam accounts quickly. For Scammers, attempting to defraud the public is their full-time job and one they take seriously. We also take the issue of scammers very seriously and will continue to do so. It is not in our best interest to allow fake accounts on the site. Unfortunately, it is difficult to know exactly what a user's intention is when they create an account. We continue to combat this problem and if anyone sees a profile they
Believe to be fraudulent, we ask that you bring it to our attention. We do have a Scam Alert placed on the site so that users are able to arm themselves with valuable information in order to avoid falling victim to a scammer and if you do purchase an upgrade only to find that the user is fraudulent, we always provide a refund.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact our Customer Support.
Thank you,
I first paid the $5.99 to try it out for 3 days. All of the people who 'SEEM' to 'Match' me, had N/A for 90% of their answers. Probably because they're either not real customers, or not paying ones. THEN, I was stupid enough to pay another $19.99 for an additional 30 days, with hopes I'd finally get to the real deal. B I G MISTAKE! Again, I was matched with N/A info people. This site is making a TON of money and pissing a lot of people off. Many people who have complained about this site, didn't take time to understand what's 'FREE' on here, so shouldn't complain when they didn't get more than they expected. However, when you pay twice and get less than nothing, I'll make it my business to report this. People, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME & MONEY. You're welcome for this review:-) P.S. Roommates.com, I've read all of your apology replies to others, so need to send one my way.
Hello,
I'm sorry the site didn't work out for you. There is always that chance when using a bulletin board service.
It's not required that you pay for a membership on Roommates.com. Many people have found roommates using the free portion of the site by including their contact information in the Comments section of their profile and in the free messages you send to other members.
Hopefully you have found a roommate by now, but if not you are welcome to give us another try. Please contact customer support at support@roommates.com and they will be happy to refund your most recent charge for you.
If you have additional questions don't hesitate to contact us.

Within a week I found a wonderful roommate and we are doing just fine. I have your site to thank for this. I would recommend Roommates.com to everyone who is in need of a roommate.
This is a professional and reasonably priced solution and I deeply appreciate what you have done for me.
Thank you so much,
cardmama
I signed up for a one month membership, since I just started renting a house and needed to find a roommate. Throughout the entire month, I was matched with plenty of people, but when reaching out never heard anything back from any of them. Throughout the entire month the only messages sent to me were from obvious scammers. (I think I received three throughout the month). Of course, the day after my subscription ran out, I started receiving messages. I assume it was to coax me to resubscribe. I wouldn't waste my time with this site. A Facebook group Works 100 times better for free
Hello,
Roommates.com is a bulletin board service as is meant to be a means of contact. It's unfortunate that the site didn't work out for you. We can't guarantee people will respond to your messages, but you can include your contact information in the free messages that you can send out so that you wouldn't need to pay for a membership. Please contact customer support at support@roommates.com to request a refund if you would like. We would be happy to give you some tips on how to use the free portion of the site and still obtain your roommate goals.

Absolutely crazy I literally finally found someone sent them a message and when they contact me back I can't read it and it tells me I have to pay and this is my first message like they should most definitely have it where you can send a couple messages for free.!
Hello,
You are welcome to send them a free message that contains your contact information so they can get a hold of you outside of the website. If one of you has a paid membership then you will be able to connect with each other.
We appreciate your comments and your suggestion will be taken into consideration for future site improvements.

Thank you Roommate.com for making the connection that I couldn't have made on my own. After communicating with several candidates I found the perfect roommate. Thank you for making the process easy and reliable.
Best!

Tried to sign up, got to the upload pics piece and it would not load any of my pics, kept giving me a message "Had a bit of a problem getting your image!" so I tried craigslist and they uploaded just fine. Next, I tried clicking into customer service to try and resolve the pic issue and... nothing. It would not open any type of dialog box, no email or anyway to contact customer service. So I decided to check out their reviews to see if others have the same issues and after seeing how bad their overall ratings are I decided it's not worth the headache.
Hello,
It's unfortunate that you did not have a good experience with Roommates.com. It sounds like the the app or the site might have been having an issue. We apologize for that. If you haven't found a new roommate yet hopefully you will give us another try. If you want some helpful tips on how to get the most out of the site please contact us at support@roommates.com.

This website allows you to reach out to "‘matches" it assigns you based on your given criteria in a message board. However, once you receive a message, it alerts you with a notice saying in order to view this message, you must sign up for a paid subscription, and makes no mention of this until you have a person who responds to you. Not a helpful website for any purpose, would not recommend to any roommate requesters.
Hello,
It's unfortunate that you were not happy with how the website works. You always have the option to put your contact information in the free messages you send to other members so they can contact you outside of the website, then only one of you have to pay for a membership. This free option has assisted countless members in finding a roommate. If you would like some tips on how to utilize the free portion of the website please contact us at support@roommates.com.

I particularly like the comments area that each renter is telling what he is looking for. That is important to me. I only view the candidates who tells in detail about him or her and what he/she is looking for.
They have people sending fake messages just so that you subscribe then they wait until your suscription is over to send a message so that you have to keep paying to see the messages.
Pretty much just a scam site, stay away.
Hello,
Roommates.com is not a scam site and has helped countless people find roommates. Roommates.com is a bulletin board service, similar to posting an add in a newspaper, so you do have to be careful and do your homework on the people you choose to interact with outside of the website.
We do not control who sends you a message and who doesn't. You do have the option to include your contact information in the free messages that you are able to send to other members and then only one person would have to pay for a membership to contact each other outside of the website.
If you would like to try us again please contact us at support@roommates.com and we will be happy to give you some tips on how to get the most out of the free portion of the site.

I have used roomate.com
For many years.
There are fake profiles to watch out for
However there are real people too
I have found 8 over the years as a person looking to rent out room.
Be patient and be safe. Invest in a background check. Roomates com does work.
I sent out around 15 inquiries to be a roomat e for someone who has a place and not one got back to me. Starting to think the site only releases rely emails if you pay the optimal fee. Dissappointment because the site is a good idae. Just come clean an say it only may work if you pay
Hello,
We understand that finding a roommate can be a difficult and frustrating process, especially if you are not getting the responses you had hoped for. Roommates.com is a bulletin board service so we cannot guarantee that someone will contact you or respond regarding your ad.
All members can send out messages to other members for free, and include their contact information if they would like, so there isn't anything keeping members from reaching out and sending you a message. The membership fees are paid to read their incoming messages and see the comments section of member profiles.
Obviously we would love to see everyone who uses Roommates.com be successful in their search for a roommate, but as always, some areas may have more roommate potentials than others.
Please contact us at support@roommates.com and we will be happy to give you some helpful hints on how to make the most out of your membership if you are still looking for a roommate.
Hope to hear from you soon.

They have you make a profile and jump through all their hoops which is all good and fine, then they pull a literal Rope-A-Dope on you and make you either pay in order to view your messages or you can't view them at all. Plenty of other sites out there that at least let you have a basic package to contact people and interact with them effectively without giving out credit card info. I wish I had looked this site up before I even bothered. If you're on a tight schedule to find a place to live, this is simply infuriating and DEFINITELY NOT the place to look.
PS If the jerks running it had an ounce of decency they would have you pay before SENDING any messages. But no, they'd rather dangle the carrot in front of you and make it blatantly obvious you had wasted your time otherwise. F this site.

Contacted Roommates.com, and btw, there is no phone number as they can't be bothered to talk to you, even when you're a paying member, so be prepared for that. Anyway, Roommates responded quickly to my written communication, I'll give them that. But, then they tell me that there is no way to block anyone who is bothering the heck out of you, filling your inbox with junk. Yes, there are many spammers on there and others have the same problems. So, I have to wade through valid replies and junk spam that this site isn't skilled enough or doesn't care enough to allow one to sort out or block. Their lame response to me was, and I kid you not LOL, to tell ME that they ask that --- I --- stop sending THEM messages, and that they will request that the spammer stops sending me messages. Just great. Plus, I had to ask them twice, because apparently, they didn't understand the first time I wrote to them. Unbelievable.
Hello,
Roommates.com is an email based website and we keep our prices low by not having a call center. We are glad you got a response quickly through email correspondence.
The system does not have an option to block a member unfortunately, but we are working on upgrades to the site. Your suggestion will definitely be taken into consideration for future site improvements.
If someone is bothering you on the site we do send a notice to both of you requesting that communication cease.
Hopefully the site works well for you in regards to finding a roommate. If you have additional questions please contact us at support@roommates.com.

This site is total garbage! Most of the emails I ever got were blocked from the site as being detected as fraud... which is all well and good, except I was still nearly scammed. I sent out numerous emails and only got 1 response. As I read the other reviews I can see I am not the only one. I only wish I had read these prior to wasting the 29.99 I didn't have to waste in the first place. And now I just caaan't waaait for Matt from roommates to respond with his useless comment on my post. Oh look at that I have a "match" in my email. I can't wait to not read it because I refuse to be defrauded again.
Answer: Yeah, if you are looking for crazy drunk high on drugs kind of people and it doesn't matter if you are male or female, after a couple of weeks, if that, they also get this crazy idea that they own you and can control your every thought move and somehow make themselves believe they are not renting a room, but using the web site to find a wife or husband type without the vows! This is not just based on one incident, but an average of 8 years of using the site on both sides. First I was renting rooms and the same applies and then I needed to rent a room which the same description applies. But understand, it is an web site for others to use. The users are the problem, not the site. It is amazing what I have experienced with all of what I said. I would think of another solution if I were you unless you want to learn as I did and I don't think it is a good idea. I would not write this if I did not know it all to well to be 1000% TRUE! I do not understand what these type of people are doing? Maybe they are a little to lonely or because you are renting a room or you need to rent a room that you do not have your own life and therefore they can take advantage of your sanity. I'm not sure, but I sure have had enough of these people for the past eight years that I have moved on to other roommate sites. Guess What? The same thing! Sorry, wish I could give a thumbs up, but No Can Do! Good luck
