As the provider, I spend countless hours dealing with the Pre-Authorization process and mostly get denied even when OptumRX doesn't have an appropriate substitution for the psychiatric medication prescribed.
Patients endure long wait times when they should be starting their new medication and providers decide to give up their private practices and/or retract from their relationship with United Health Care Insurance which means patients have to find new providers and nobody wins.
In the end, patients suffer the most and providers finally give up but UHC continues to wonder why there are so many patients seeking treatment.
All-the-while: (exert from article https://www.fiercehealthcare.com/payers/heres-how-much-unitedhealth-ceo-andrew-witty-earned-last-year).

In 2019, as CEO of UnitedHealth's Optum subsidiary, Witty took home $16.5 million in total compensation, which included a $1.1 million salary and $9.4 million in stock awards.

I take 6 medications that I ordered over a month ago. To this day, I have received 2 of them. I had to get two of them locally because it was taking so long to receive. About a week ago, I found out that my insurance wouldn't cover one of the remaining so they had to go to my doctor to find an alternative. They said that it shipped and was delivered. WAS NOT RECEIVED. They are now telling me that I can't use the manufacturer's discount card on the 2nd remaining med...so instead of paying $25 dollars for the med, I'll have to pay $175. AND it's on backorder.

In the meantime, my blood glucose levels are NOT under control. I eat right, minimize my carb intake and make sure that I'm eating the right kinds of carbs. I need these meds to help manage my blood glucose. This company should ABSOLUTELY NOT have people's health in their hands.

The automatic phone system at optumrx didn't work when I entered my birthday. It's says the information entered doesn't match. ( I think I know when my birthday is). I called and spoke to a supervisor back in February here it is July and it's not fixed. Spoke again with a supervisor on July 12 was told I would get a call back in 7 days, it's now 12 days and still no answer. Alex tiday and the representative that answered the phone says hold on I need to get a supervisor in the USA! Really! Then came back on the line and said that the supervisor will call me back in 5 days.? I said no I need to speak to someone now. Then she proceeded to tell me that the supervisor do jut call people back. Does anyone At OPTUMRX in the USA or what other country /Planet are on know what they are doing. This is no joke they are dealing with peoples medication. Sincerely Ann Timko

I have Optum RX service via my United Healthcare. Optum RX customer service is the worst! When you call, you get someone whose English is not always the best. When will companies learn that just because you can outsource customer service, you shouldn't? I had to request a statement to provide proof of payment for my FSA. I had to contact them 3 times before I actually got it. Which they can't send via e-mail for 'security purposes'. Which I really think just means that they don't know how. I had to request a statement a 2nd time, because they took the funds from my personal account instead of my FSA acco$#*!. Again, it's taken 3 times and I'm not even sure I'll ever get the documentation. I'll never sign up with them again to get my medications via the mail.

My doctor called in a prescription for three different medications on July 7th. Optum RX contacted me by email to let me know they had canceled my order on July 15th. They didn't even bother to tell me which specific drug. Long story short they had a question about one medication so they held up the other two, one of which I am out of and the other I am almost out of. My doctor has no record of ever hearing from them. If you're delivering pizza and burritos, it might be okay to hold one order until questions are resolved about the other but not when you are dealing with prescription that people can literally die if they don't have. They are simply trying to save multiple shipping cost at the expense of my health and well-being. Their service is beyond bad. The girl I chatted with had absolutely no sense of urgency about the issue. I would not recommend Optum RX for any reason.

VERY UNHAPPY
March 19, 2022

My Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan carrier switched our mail order prescription service this year from ExpressScripts to OptumRx. Boy, it has been less than 3 months and I have had nothing but issues with OptumRx! Do not recommend this company at all.

Absolutely Awful
August 11, 2020

Honestly one of the worst precription companies. When I'm out of medication I only have a few refills so I then have to call my doctor for them to call and refill it. Then it takes over a week for it to be mailed to me. When the medication is needed immediately I'm not able to get it at a pharmacy. When I do call and they say I get an overide to get at a pharmacy it doesn't go through the system. Extremely frustrating and a waste of time and energy. I wish this company wasn't required through insurance

This is the worst company to fill prescriptions with. Horrible customer service, I had to call 5 times and was on hold for 45 minutes, for one medication. I had to call on another prescription and the guy I was talking to, rudely hung up on me! Caremark never treated their customers like this. VERY DISSATISFIED!

I had an eye drops prescription sent there. By the time I got to my car from the Dr. Office they had already processed my claim.
I called there and had to keep getting a new representative because they had such broken English. I said I have a copay assistance card but because the prescription was already processed I couldn't use it and charged me $175. After some back and forth they decided to cancel the order. I had to call back after 24 hours so I could then use the card. I called the next day and they processed the prescription and was told I had to pay zero because I had the card. 2 days later I received the prescription with a bill for $175. I called again and got the same run around with every person that I talked to. I refuse to pay the bill and will be getting them filled at Walgreens. I would rather pay the $70 a month there instead of the $175 for 3 months at optum and have to deal with their people.

This had got to be the worst customer service I've ever experienced in my entire life we will be pulling all medications from them and getting them elsewhere. I spent one hour and three minutes on the phone just trying to refill my father's prescriptions the woman put me on hold probably 10 times the word umm came out of her mouth every other sentence. I had to keep repeating his name birthdate and address. They had the address wrong. She tried to blame it on us and told me I needed to contact USPS for an address change. I said there is no address change you just missed one word out of their address. I was only able to get two of the five prescriptions refilled because she was having such a hard time handling it. Then after an hour and my frustration level was through the roof she had the nerve to say I'm sorry you're having a bad day. My reply was I was not having a bad day until I had to deal with you. I hung up the phone did not get the last three prescriptions ordered and I told my father he would never be buying another prescription through them again.

Botox medication
February 14, 2022

I honestly cannot believe all of the BS I have had to go through with this company. I've been dealing with them since 9-16-2020. If your company offers United Health Care Ins-- GOOD LUCK with any type of specialty medicine and good luck speaking to ANY ONE that speaks English.
Just today I've been hung up on twice and I've been on hold for over an hour...
BRING IT BACK TO THE UNITED STATES PEOPLE... RIDICULOUS

August 5, 2021

I called and enrollded 7/12/21 and placed an order and was told to expect delivery 7/26. I was happy and looked forwrd to the discount prices. Well, meds didn't show and I called back 8/2. They apologized and said they were shipped and to expect them on 8/4... NO SHOW AGAIN. Called back and they said they was an issue and didn't send. NEVER called or emailed me. Called CVS and immediately got meds... sad job. Don't recommend Optimrx

I ordered albuterol and was told it was delivered on 6/10: I never received it but I did pay for it. Called again and was told it would be sent out again. Called again and found out it still wasn't processed. I am out of the med and was told to get another script and go to the local pharmacy. I should at least get my money back. Delivery of drugs are common knowledge to all pharmacies. It cannot be refilled. This is an important med to me and now I have none. This is a new med to me from Optum. Is this fair?

Received and email from Optumrx to call and give more information before refill could be completed. I resonded to the email with a phone call. "John" at customer service (male with heavy philippine accent) was arrogant, angry, and intolerant while I tried to complying with Optumrx request. Once I read the whole email to him he continued to lecture me on how he did not care I was home bound and needed the refill ordered by my PCP. He was in no way helpful or understanding of the refill issue. I am a retired doctor. If I was his superior he would be fired instantly. He made Optiumrx look very bad. No wonder the customer service rating is so low. I then call UHC customer service and Phillis was caring and extremely helpful despite no resolution to my refill request could occur. I will now bother my PCP in telemedicine met next week to attempt to resolve my need. A Kyle A. And Erica V. had bad experiences.

Absolutely Ridiculous
January 28, 2021

We have State Insurence and why the state has opted to use there service I'll never know. You have a State Job for 25 years you generally have good drug coverage. I live with many chronic diseases that I HAVE to take medication for, some of these medications I've taken for 20 years. But when this Company has taken over our drug prescription policy. I'm getting letter after stating they can not cover my very important meds. The ones they can cover are gonna cost me $516.00 a month for one prescription in itself. My quality of life has been stolen by this Company and it's the biggest disgrace I've ever faced in my life!
I'm so disappointed in whoever chose to use these people. I would NOT RECCOMEND THEM TO A SINGLE SOUL!

I am a physician and my cardiologist is one of my partners. Optum refuses to honor a 90 day prescription which of course increases my copay. No big deal initially but now I see online that they do this A LOT. Now they have lied to me by telling me that they have tried to get in touch with my partner 3 times this week to authorize a refill, which they have not. Online, there are 3 refills left on the prescription. I also told them not to call me because I wasn't going to give out personal information over the phone on any incoming call and they completely ignored that. They have called me 4 times in the last two days and the last one hung up on me when I informed her I wouldn't give her my personal information.
