Freaking ridiculous bs. I've used them in the past but apparently they've sunk ship, and I'm going someplace else. Got all the way through to my W2's, and the page wouldn't allow me to progress, insisting on me entering my personal data again EVERY TIME. Chat isn't available unless you PAY a premium monthly. Screw the F out of that. BYE
I spent several hours entering all my information to learn after I completed my return that I needed one more form and they did not have it. I was unable to complete my return with them because their software did not support the form. The software was fairly easy to use, but not having the adequate forms is not acceptable. If your tax return is easy this might be an ok software tax platform, but if you have anything additional, I would NEVER use this software.
Hello Gregg, we are sorry to hear we were not able to support your situation this year. Our software supports many situations and levels of complexity, without increasing the cost. Our software provides a list of all our supported forms for Federal and State on our homepage. If you have any questions, we are happy to have you reach out to our Customer Support team by signing into your account.
For a premium tax return, 12 dollars who can complain unless you mess up. I ran my return through TurboTax, Credit Karma, H&R Block, and FreeTaxUSA.
TurboTax is way overpriced. They also include many forms some not even used, which is also time-consuming scroll through for review. $136 dollars not including State return! I can take my return to a CPA for that much. Credit Karma has a long way to go before I will submit a return using their online package. H&R Block is also pricey not nearly as easy compared to FreeTaxUSA. As it turned out I got the most back from FreeTaxUSA and easy to use. How can that happen?
Thanks for the kind words, RC! We feel that FreeTaxUSA provides the best value in the industry and are happy to hear you feel the same!
I went through the whole process this year with both TurboTax and FreeTaxUSA to see the difference. Turbo tax is easier to understand for the most part, and found me about $60 more to deduct, but since I'm self employeed and operate in several different states the tax prep fee was almost $300. FreeTaxUSA takes a bit of careful reading, but ended up at almost the same result and the tax prep fee was around $50, even with the add-on for amendments just in case. Worth it for me. If I get audited or something I'll update this, but right now this seems like a good deal.
Thank you for the review of the software. We appreciate your loyalty and we value your feedback. We hope to continue to earn your business for many years to come.
The software worked perfectly for me without any problems. My tax return was simple this year so this software worked great. I suspect if I had a more complex return it might be more of a challenge. But that's conjecture.
I recommend this software for anyone with a basic tax return.
Hello John, thank you for using FreeTaxUSA and for the positive feedback! Our software is designed to walk you step-by-step through both simple tax preparation as well as more complex situations, with helpful links along the way. We are glad that you had a positive experience and look forward to supporting you in the future.
This was my first year using free tax USA, Advil not entirely disappointed. The walkthrough was simple and my federal return got to my door quickly. However, as of today i have been waiting two weeks for my state return. I understand that the website is not responsible for how long the IRS takes to deliver the return. Though i cannot help but but worry that a calculation went wrong and i will be fined. If possible i will update this review in the future.
Hi Antonio, processing times can vary from year to year. States generally do take longer than the IRS to process refunds. This year several states will be even slower than they have in the past due to additional fraud checks. We guarantee the accuracy of our calculations. If you ever have a question about how something is calculated, click on the ‘Contact Support’ link while signed in to your FreeTaxUSA account and our support team will be happy to assist you.
Free tax usa had me spending about 2 hours submitting info for e-file. Then it shows me a pop-up stating: " great, we found no issues with your return" so then I pay with credit card. After payment they say they need more info before it can be filed. They want some stupid pin from 2 years ago when I filed through a third party. So because I no longer can get this info from 2 years ago they say my return can't be e-filed! Well I paid to have it e-filed! I am not getting what I paid for/ what was promised to me. This also happened to 3 other people I know! FREE tax USA IS A SCAM! SCAMMM! SCAMM!
Hi Ragen, it sounds like you may be having problems with the prior year AGI/pin requirement. I am sorry for the frustration with the filing portion of your return. The IRS e-file system needs this in order to accept an e-filed return. Our Customer Support team would be happy to help you get this figured out, please log into your account and select "Support" in the upper right hand corner. We will then be able to assist you with this issue. Thanks!
While the customer service representative was helpful, he is not responsible for the program. The representative agreed with me that a calculation for nj income tax was not done correctly ( software, programming issues).
Hello Michael, we're sorry you had trouble preparing your returns. We would be happy to look into this for you! Please sign in to your account and click "Contact Support".
I don't trust this site... they took my money but NOTHING in email notifying me that my taxes were received by the IRS... is that normal? I am worried they took my money and didn't submit my paperwork.
I just filed my 2012 return with FreeTaxUSA and was just informed that i cannot efile 2012 tax return. Also i was just informed that i will get no refund. Was i charged the $12.95 for nothing? The irs is holding my 2015 refund due to not filing for 2012. As this is an urgent situation, any information will be appreciated.
Hi Sam, the IRS only accepts e-filed returns for the current tax year, prior year returns must be printed and mailed. Any tax refunds need to be claimed within 3 years of the return due date, so if you just filed your 2012 tax return you wouldn’t qualify for a refund for that year. It can still be worth filing a prior year return because the IRS may withhold your current year tax refund if there are any prior year returns that are past due. The IRS has some good information about prior year tax returns here: https://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Filing-Past-Due-Tax-Returns
I do my whole families taxes and Even complicated returns are done perfectly - have used them for many years and NEVER a problem. I had a problem with the system March 5th so I sent an FB message. They asked me a few questions and helped me get back on. It turns out it wasn't their system it was my location! https://www.facebook.com/FreeTaxUSAOfficial/
Thanks for the review, Edie! We are always happy to help and look forward to seeing you and your family next year.
We have had filing refused. I don't know if it is id theft. I had put my name first instead of my husband, so I amended form now I cannot log in. It asks questions I don't think was part of my profile. I have tried login in with my ss and then my husbands. I can't get anywhere. I can't log into the site.
I can't log in using where I lived at 12 and my #'s nor can my husband. I need someone to change the where we lived at 12. I am sure I was asked other questions too.
It keeps sending a temporary password but it will not take any of the information like SS or security questions. I would like to simply know if it was filed refused or what and get a refund if not
Hi Linda, I would encourage you to contact our customer support. They will be able to look up your account and can give you instruction on your options for recovering your account. Please send an email to support@freetaxusa.com
When taking a deduction for income or sales taxes on Schedule A (line 5a), the taxpayer has the option to choose sales taxes instead of income taxes. Even though the income taxes might be higher than sales taxes, it could be advantageous for the taxpayer especially if either option would be limited by the maximum allowed. [Future "taxable" State refunds are eliminated if sales taxes are deducted and not income taxes.] FreeTaxUSA automatically assumes the taxpayer want to deduct the higher of sales taxes or income taxes. I does NOT allow the taxpayer to select the best option.
Hi Art. We are sorry for the frustration you have felt with the Schedule A state income tax and sales tax. Our software is designed to provide you with the best outcome. If Sales tax was more beneficial but you do not wish to take the sales tax, then you could remove it from the Schedule A information and the state income taxes would automatically be used. Feel free to sign into your account at any time and reach out to Customer Support. We are always happy to be of assistance and answer questions.
I love freetax usa! I am self employeed and claim several write offs. Ive used this service the last 3 years in a row and its veen easy every single time. It walks me thru and asks every question you can think of and helps me get the biggest refund that i can get. If you do something that doesn't look correct they will alert you. I really love this service and the irs has accepted my return within hours each year. Its simple and free. I recommend it to all of my friends and my family.
Hello Michelle! Thank you so much for recommending us to your family and friends. We appreciate you and your wonderful feedback.
I just moved to the USA and had never filed here (or anywhere by myself) before. I found this website and just started to fill out the form "for fun" to see how easy it was. Within two hours, I'd finished filing both my state and federal taxes and I received $3,500 return. I couldn't believe how easy and helpful it was. I didn't even plan on filing my taxes that day, but it was just so easy I couldn't stop.
I agree with Mallory Z. One hundred per cent! Similarly, I have used FreeTaxUSA
For seven years and will confirm that it does perform perfectly. Given the common
Sense way it is formatted, and the line by line tutorials and prompts, it is really
Difficult to make a mistake. One example would be the W-2 entry where it displays
A blank W-2 form and all you do is enter the numbers from your W-2, starting with
Box #1. If you cannot complete your taxes in one session, the info is saved and you
Can return later to complete. H&R Block? WHO ARE THEY?
It says "File Free Federal Income Tax!" and under it says "State Income Tax Only $12.95!". So I fully intend to file a free federal tax and no state tax. But, after you finish typing in all the info from the W-2 forms and give them all your information for federal tax, they start asking questions about your federal tax. Then you go to support and THEN they inform you that you MUST file a state tax to file your "free" federal tax. They make no mention of this before you start inputting the data. They figure that you will just fork over the $12.95 in order to avoid going to a REAL e-file site and entering it all over again. Well I will be entering all the info again on another site, I refuse to pay them as this is false advertising. I will be reporting this to the IRS and Better Business Bureau and I encourage others to do the same thing.
Hi John, sorry for any confusion. Just to clarify a state return is not required to file a free federal return. We have filed millions of completely free federal returns without requiring the state to be purchased. The software does require you to enter the information for your state return but you can opt out of buying the state return on the checkout screens. The state return is completely optional to purchase.
As far as support saying you must file a state tax return in order to file your free federal tax return, there must have been a misunderstanding. It's true that you must file a free federal return before filing a state return, but you are under no obligation to file a state return using our software. Many people choose to file their state return because of the convenience and value, but again it's not required.
I have tried and failed to log in several times, with verification codes, etc. to log in and access my account. Have contacted them with no answer. I am about to have my bank cancel their charge to my credit card. Nobody messes with me.
Hello G. L.! I am sorry that you are having trouble logging into your account. I know that can be very frustrating and we would love to help you resolve this issue. Customer Support replies to messages within 24 hours but typically respond much faster. I would suggest you check your spam folder to see if our reply was caught there. If you are unable to find a reply can you private message your email address through SiteJabber?
Why would you guys be doing "routine site maintenance" the last week before the tax filing deadline!? This is ridiculous! This is my first time and if this is the way you operate, it is likely my last!
Hi David, thanks for writing. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Our web site is fully functional and you should now be able to login and continue your tax return.
Thank you for your response but it really doesn't help anything because I have done all of those suggestions you had and told your support as much and that was the answer I still got. I am very knowledgeable in the process of filing returns and such I've been preparing and filing returns for many years and am VERY familiar with how it works, As I said before I followed all the proper steps and it still has no record of my return! Where would you like me to send my private email too?
Hi Heather, I will contact you directly through sitejabber to request your email address.
I have used this site for a few years not just for myself but my entire family and extended family also, But this year I have had trouble and basically they said nothing we can do sucks to be you! I sent my return via freetaxusa and got an acceptance notification on February 28th my tax return was transmitted sucessfully well it is now March 17th and the IRS shows nothing about my return says it has not been filed. When I notified freetaxusa support I was told it showed it had been accepted and there was nothing they could do to help me find out where it was or why the IRS has not received it! Wow really I will never use this site again and I will tell everyone how bad the support is. I am appalled at this service and lack of responsibility this site has when handling such important material
Answer: Hi Janet, sorry for any confusion. The $12.95 fee is for state tax return preparation whether the tax return is e-filed or printed and mailed. In regard to your difficulty paying. When you make a debit or credit card purchase online, the card processor checks with your bank or credit card issuer to first make sure you have enough available credit to complete the purchase. The card processor then makes sure the other information you input (for instance, your address) matches what your bank has on record. If all is well, the transaction is processed. If not, such as an address that doesnt match, then the transaction is declined. If you were having difficulty with each card, I would recommend double checking the billing information you entered on FreeTaxUSA. If thats all correct, I would contact your bank and make sure the information they have on file is up-to-date. If youre ever having trouble while using our site, you can click on the Contact Support link or email our customer support team at support@freetaxusa.com and a support team member will be happy to assist you.
Answer: Hi Theresa! If you have not submitted your taxes and need to make changes, you can use the tabs near the top of the screen (Personal, Income, Deductions/Credits, etc.) to navigate to the area you want to make changes. If you've already filed, you'll need to amend your taxes in order to make changes. Our support agents would be happy to give more information for either case. You can contact them by selecting "Support" in your account.
Answer: Hi Mahlon, we are happy to help you with your questions. I'm sorry but we do not have phone support at this time. If you need some help you can contact us at support@support.freetaxusa.com
Answer: Hi Byron, thank you for reaching out. We are sorry to hear of the frustrations you are experiencing. Once the state return has been paid for and the return is finalized the returns are available for you to print. Would you please sign into your account and select to contact Support. This will allow us to assist you best.
Answer: Hi Peter. Thank you for your question. FreeTaxUSA is unable to mail your return for you. However, if you choose to mail your return on the Filing Method screen found under the Filing menu, our software will tell you how/where to mail your return. You can print a copy of your federal tax return for free on the Check Status/Print Tax Return screen also found under the Filing menu. If you don't have a printer and would like to order a printed copy, you can do that on the Order Products and Services screen found in the same menu.
Answer: Hi, Sean! That's a great question. Our software is entirely browser-based, so it will be compatible with any operating system running a major browser. This includes Chrome, Edge, Safari, iOS, and Firefox.
Answer: Hello Linda. I am sorry you have not yet received your tax refund. The IRS typically issues the refund in about 21 days. However, this is just an average and not a rule. Please check the status of your Federal refund at www.irs.gov/refunds. Your state will also have a similar site where you can check the status of your refund. If you have any questions after you have checked the status of your refunds, please sign into your FreeTaxUSA account and click on the Contact Support menu option.
Answer: Hello Shannon! Yes, you can prepare both your 2021 and 2022 taxes using our software, but you will enter each year's information separately in each year's software. Current year taxes can be e-filed, and prior year taxes will need to be mailed. There is no charge for e-filing, but we do have additional products available (such as State Tax Returns) for an additional cost. Our support agents would be happy to answer any additional questions at support@freetaxusa.com.
FreeTaxUSA has a rating of 2.2 stars from 288 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with FreeTaxUSA most frequently mention state taxes, last year and customer service. FreeTaxUSA ranks 1st among Tax Preparation sites.
Hello Nettie! It sounds like you might have more than one account on our website and our support team would be happy to look into this for you. Can you please sign in to your account and click “Support”?
