Expedia Reviews Summary

Expedia's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, primarily stemming from poor customer service and issues with booking accuracy. Many customers report difficulties in reaching live support, leading to frustrations over incorrect reservations, unexpected charges, and inadequate responses to cancellations. While some users appreciate the variety of options available through the platform, the overall sentiment reflects a lack of trust due to perceived unethical practices and inadequate support during critical situations. I booked a "thing to do" while at port (cruise) in Porto, Portugal. I paid for 4 of us, 5 months in advance ($433!). The voucher would never render, so I didn't have any details on the excursion. I tried chat and phone call IN ADVANCE, and they said my transaction was "pending with the supplier", so that's why I didn't get the details. They could never answer "where to meet" or "who's the vendor", so we (+3 friends) couldn't attend. The help desk didn't understand (or incented to say they didn't) and said they couldn't give me a refund because I didn't attend. (BUT-- they could never give me any vendor name or meet details!). There is no way to discuss with anyone other than the "Global Escalation Supervisor" (95% sure India), and didn't offer any other way to explain -- just "you didn't go, no refund!" UNBELIEVABLE! WILL NEVER USE EXPEDIA AGAIN, and will do everything I can to share my experience with others! I had good luck with TripAdvisor, Viator -- so please focus on those options!

I am deeply frustrated and disappointed with the poor service I received from Expedia during my recent flight bookings. I initially booked a flight from Vancouver to Albany via San Francisco and Newark, with a return trip from Boston to Vancouver via Montreal. I specifically chose this itinerary for a shorter layover and earlier return.
However, after paying extra to change my flight to a Seattle layover, I was assured it would have only one stop. To my dismay, I discovered shortly before departure that there were two stops, in Seattle and Chicago. This negated the purpose of paying extra for a faster journey. I had to spend considerable time on the phone with Expedia and the airline to secure an alternate flight via Newark.
To make matters worse, my return flight from Boston was unexpectedly canceled, and I was rebooked on a less desirable flight without my consent. Despite the inconvenience, I was denied a refund for the price difference. Adding to my frustration, I witnessed the supposedly canceled flight boarding for Montreal at a nearby gate.
Furthermore, I later discovered that my supposedly canceled flight from Montreal to Vancouver was actually running on time under a different flight number. This deceptive practice further worsened the situation and eroded my trust.
I am appalled by the terrible service I received from a company I trusted for a smooth and efficient booking process. This experience has been the worst in all my years of traveling, and I feel cheated and deceived. I sent an email to your customer service but have received no response, which is unacceptable.
I expect a prompt and professional reply to address my concerns. The lack of transparency, misinformation, and failure to provide adequate assistance have greatly affected my travel experience. Expedia needs to thoroughly investigate these matters and take appropriate measures to rectify the situation.

Did not refund when company could not even get us the car. They left us and about 10 other people waiting at the airport for over an hour and the shuttle never came. We even arrived 15 min before pickup time just to be safe. A bunch of us called multiple times and no one answered or called back. We ended up having to pay $65 to Uber to our Airbnb, so did the others. I called in the morning and they said we can get a refund through Expedia, but Expedia said Routes rejected the refund request. I will follow up again and update if anything changes.

Inconsiderate Lazy
May 14, 2023

This company is so inconsiderate. They made the mistake of changing the order of my name, making my LAST NAME and FIRST NAME switched. Thanks to them I have missed a flight and have to wait 7 hours for the next flight. Not to mention the customer service has a very bad attitude and made me wait for 2 hours to change the ticket name.

This is the worst platform ever. Never trust them. They changed the dates of my reservation from what i had initially booked. Tell me it's non refundable and there's nothing they can do about it. Bunch of lying/cheating thieves. Not only was it non refundable, i was stuck in a foreign country with no accomodation so i had to book a last minute hotel which cost triple the price because all the other hotels in my budget are fully booked caz it's last minute.

Book locally through a small travel agent. I mistakenly booked my Aunt through her maiden name instead of married. Expedias agents were trained improperly so they assumed it would be fixed with a form submission. They were wrong about that. It's only acceptable with certain airlines and it can't be more than one. Due to broken English staff couldn't explain issues with airlines and I guess due to not being able to write detailed notes saying they made mistakes… I lost 4,500 usd on plane tickets just over a name change that the airlines said they could fix without Expedia reporting if.

Expedia Terrible
May 2, 2023

Rental car company through Expedia canceled my rental car. When my family arrived to airport they informed us of this. Took us hours to find another rental car from different company. We had to rent car from another company last minute which costed 2x. The rental car company that canceled my car charged me $200 and did not provide refund. Called Expedia 4 times within 2 months and they did not offer any assistance (other than saying they could not reach rental company)

Expedia will not back rental car company or other companies they offer services from on website. They offer no protection for their customers... and do not care. Rental car company and Expedia stole $200 me!

The ad quoted $143 per night and seemed competitive with other Hotels in the area. I was booking a trip 3 days in advance. As I added more people to the reservation, the cost went up markedly. I booked the room for 4 people for 2 nights. The room had 2 queen size beds and 2 sleeper sofas. After all the hooey hooey charges were tacked on it was $666.00. After hours of searching, I just went ahead and booked it. Then, one person on the trip got stranded in another state and her flight was canceled. She couldn't make it home in time. I tried to cancel and they refused to refund my money! I tried through Expedia and directly through the hotel. They told me to "read the fine print" - No refunds. After spending half of a day calling back and forth between Expedia and Bay Palms Hotel, they agreed to refund 1 of the 2 days. I then had to make the trip for1 day only, and they charged me $392.63 for one night. It wound up being a wonderful trip. The rooms are clean and just as advertised. Two days after I returned home, another charge appeared in my bank account. $44.07. What? You're kidding! I called the hotel directly. I was asked if I had read the policies. I was told it was a non-refundable charge for the hotel's amenities. I thought "What am I to do?" "Hire a lawyer?" So that was that. $436.70 for one overnight stay. This was not The Ritz or Park Hyatt! I will never go back, and wish all to know. I don't know any hotel that refuses to refund money with 72 hours' notice.

While in Lisbon, I booked a trip to go to Fatima, Nazare, and Obidos on April 28,2023 for April 29,2023. The morning of April 29th, I was waiting for the tour guide to come but no one did. I tried calling the local agency ( Lisbona Turismo) to no avail, sent them an email, and sent them chat through Whatsapp. After 9 mins, this is the email I received from Lisbona Turismo "Hello the tour is canceled because not have a minimun number.Sorry but yesterday expedia call me and i already inform".

So, I technically wasted my time waking up early and waiting but found out I was charged and this is Expedia's reply to me ( after multiple email exchanges and asking them why the system still allowed me to book).

"Hello Angie,

We have advocated for your refund request to Lisbona turismo but we haven't gotten approval from the property manager. We apologize if this may have been trouble for you.

"We're really sorry about this; we always try to contact suppliers and advocate for our travelers in these situations. Properties often have strict policies around refunds, and there's nothing more we can do in this case."

DO NOT USE Expedia
April 27, 2023

I've been a member of the Expedia community since 2008. I've booked hundreds of flights and hotels with Expedia all around the world. In the last two years, I have experienced nothing but problems with Expedia. Last year they failed to book a ticket purchase to Croatia that was made on their website. The airline had no record of my purchased flight. Expedia was able to fix the problem but we lost a day of travel. Most recently I booked a flight and hotel deal. I chose "partial dates" on the hotel because we were only spending 2 nights in D.C. Before heading to Wilmington, DE. The Expedia website booked us for 5 nights even though I had chosen the "partial dates" for the hotel. Now I'm paying for 5 nights in DC when we are only staying 2 nights. I gave Expedia the opportunity to fix the problem and they said it could not be fixed as it was a non-refundable reservation. Expedia bundles the flight cost with the hotel cost at checkout so it is unclear what you are paying for. A faithful member of the Expedia community has now left for good. I've had 3 out of my last 6 trips, screwed up by Expedia in some form or fashion. WARNING - Stay Away from Expedia. I am./

Its a 1 star company
April 26, 2023

Not sure how they received 1 star on all other sites, but more than 4 star on their own? Well, the fact that they don't have an email address and have no formal complaint site (the one they have requires between 11 to 13 digit itineraries, but theirs is more than that) should be a good sign of just what sort of a company it really is. You can't add to that page, so how do the others get added to reach 4 stars? Just avoid at all costs, and book directly with venues, since such companies, like Thomas Cook, collapse out of nowhere and then you will have to beg to get your money back

Easy and good prices
April 26, 2023

We've been using Expedia for round trip flight internationally, it's convenient, easy to use and I like the price changes alert. I also like that I can view prices for each date ranges. Affordable prices, and I like the idea that I received the alert or reminder for my upcoming flights.

I booked a flight and made reservations for a car in February. I was going to get my son and bring him home in April so I thought everything was taken care of after I paid extra for seats next to each other through American Airlines. I did not hear anything, but I few nights before the flight, I decided to review everything to make sure everything was intact. But after logging in, I saw I had no seats reserved. I contacted Expedia, and they said they sent me a confirmation that I wanted seats next to each other but never responded. I checked my e-mails and spam folder, to no avail. Nothing. So in order to sit next to my son, I had to pay an additional fee which I begrudgingly did. Upon arrival to Charlotte Airport, I contacted the rental car company to find out how to get there. They said they had no cars for me, and after a bit of an angry tirade, the company told me to contact Expedia. So I did, asked them to help me and they said there were no rentals available. I was furious, but decided to check with the rental cars in the airport. Alamo booked me a car in five minutes. I will never use expedia again...

Booked a first class flight ticket with Expedia at a price of over $1500! When an economy priced ticket was around a $500. The flight to and from had a connection and was actually four flights to the destination and back home. When I got to the airport I found out Expedia booked only two of the four flights as First class when I paid for the entire trip to be first class. When you can Expedia you are going to be rerouted to India or somewhere across the globe to a rep that can not help you and just waste you time! You can NOT take the issue with the airlines because you purchased the ticket from Expedia so you can not resolve anything and stuck with the mistake Expedia made. I ended up flying economy only later getting an e mail from Expedia admitting to their mistake and only offering a $400 refund on a $1500 ticket price! Do yourself a big favor and never book with Expedia as you have no real solution in real time. You are better off booking directly with the airlines or hotels as they can solve a issue if there is any. Use Expedia to search for your best route but book direct with the Airline or Hotel. You will save yourself a lot of trouble. Also any changes you need to make to your reservation you will be rerouted to India or somewhere across the globe to try and make when you can easily do it when booking direct with Airlines or Hotels. Booking with Expedia is asking for trouble. Stay away!

The Worst
April 13, 2023

Expedia travel company is the worst! I booked a simple hotel room in Mexico for a vacation and put in the correct date and when I paid and checked out it was one month off. I spent three hours on the phone after four phone numbers that did not even work, there website was down for two hours and there was no way to get in touch. Finally got through to their chat line and even though they say no cancelation fees if you cancel within 24 hours they told me I would have to pay the full amount if I canceled! $2,000.00 Finally 1:00 am finally someone answered the phone and needs to talk to 49 people to see if I can cancel because of their mistake. Do not use Expedia, they are the worst! By the time we're done the hotel will probably be sold out.

I live in Canada and downloaded the expedia app while trying to book a last minute flight to attend my mother's funeral. The app defaulted to a US customer even though I have a Canadian address and was booking a flight within Canada. As a result, I booked my flight unwittingly in USD and only realized the problem weeks later when I received my credit card statement showing an additional $900 in charges. When I contacted expedia they showed no empathy and took no accountability for their program error. Their sole focus was on denying all responsibility. I will avoid using expedia at all costs.

Booking went smoothly...then the airline (Spirit) couldn't find the trip because Expedia software truncated my name and noting matched at Spirit. I have spent several hours with Expedia and Spirit trying to get a simple name correction (which they both have and communicate with me using my actual name). Expedia can do nothing (point finger at airline when error is clearly generated by them). The best Spirit can do is tell me to sit and wait for 2.5 hours for a chat to begin. I cannot correct, cancel or change anything without living through this nightmare of NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. Advise all to avoid both of these companies completely.

I wanted to extend my rental through Hotwire without returning to the rental agency, was unable. Subsequently had to book another rental, accidentally booked with the wrong company and immediately contacted Hotwire to resolve. Hotwire charged me for 2 rentals, refused to contact the rental agency to request a refund, as the rental agency advised. Expedia Group does not value customers, only money. I attempted to dispute with my bank, Hotwire still disputed. They lost a loyal customer and will hopefully lose many more. We should stop spending money with companies that don't respect our business or money. Booking my spring trip through Agoda, the experience and service has been amazing so far.
