American Express Reviews Summary

American Express has faced significant criticism regarding its customer service and the reliability of its rewards program. Many customers express disappointment with unfulfilled promises related to benefits and rewards, alongside complaints about poor communication and unhelpful support representatives. Issues such as deceptive billing practices and unresolved disputes further exacerbate customer dissatisfaction. Despite a long history of customer loyalty, recent experiences suggest a decline in service quality, prompting many to seek alternatives. Overall, while the brand has a legacy of prestige, current feedback indicates a pressing need for improvement in customer relations and service transparency.

I have FIVE AMX cards with American Express and until last month, have had a perfect pay record with them. Unfortunately, I misunderstood the terms of my Business Gold card and now have a full balance due that I cannot pay at this time. I have requested terms allowing me to make payments to keep all my accounts current, but have been told by numerous CS people that this is not possible. I have additionally requested on FOUR separate occasions to speak with a Supervisor to further discuss the circumstances and was told on THREE of those occasions that one would return my call withing 24 - 48 hours. Upon asking if I was speaking with the "promised" Supervisor when AMX called again tonite, the CS said "I see where you were to receive a call from a Supervisor and then - "BEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPP" - HE HUNG UP ON ME! I have (previously/numerously) explained that my good credit is a HIGHLY valued commodity to me as a small business owner and practically begged them to help me work out a plan, but I can not find a way to speak to anyone beyond the "front line" that "reads from the SCRIPT". I'm confused, WHY wouldn't a company want to keep a (up until now) good customer that wants to make good, instead of forcing them to go the route of defaulting and then they get nothing. Either way, my credit will suffer :( :( :( SO upset and frustrated!

Their customer service is very good overall and the support chat app on their website is one of the better available especially for a large creditor.

On the negative side: 1.The rates are entirely too high for someone with my credit history. 2. They offer no balance transfer options. 3. They are not accepted by enough stores on account of their very high merchant fees. In the eighties American Express used to advertise as the worlds most widely accepted credit card that's hardly true anymore. I made the mistake of taking it with me to Ireland where i reserved a car with it knowing that I would be able use the insurance coverage that comes with it only to find out after i arrived that not only did i have to buy insurance separately because Amex's coverage was not valid in that country but that no one else in Ireland save for one or two international chains accepts Amex at all.

I charged a 3-night hotel reservation via Travelocity online for Super8 Decatur Georgia. I have stayed there six times in 12 months. I chose the more expensive option, versus the no-cancellation option, and I selected to pay Travelocity directly, instead of at hotel check-in. I was taken by ambulance to an Atlanta area hospital in the morning after my fist night's stay, and spent six days in the hospital due to a brain problem. My cousin who stayed with me the first night, cleared out the room on the afternoon of the second day, notified the hotel, and no one was in the room for the second and third nights. I also called from the hospital. I requested that the hotel refund my third night only (I was okay paying for the second night, although the room was empty), but the desk clerk said since I paid Travelocity online, they would decide. When I emailed Travelocity for the refund, they said the hotel would decide. When American Express charged me, I disputed it. I wrote that I had a tragic emergency, which has affected my brain (still), and they have closed their investigation based on Travelocity policy of, once you check in, you can't change your stay. AMERICAN EXPRESS WAS SOME KIND OF BIG HELP. My hospital bill is almost $40,000, so this just adds insult to brain injury. The charge is 92.53, and I only ask for one night refund. No loyalty to me for being a repeat customer, or a longtime credit card holder. I am not happy - these were extraordinary circumstances. I have the hospital bills and the ER bills, and the doctor bills.

They suck
March 4, 2017

First off they charge you to spend your own money bad enough some atms charge you about 2 to 3 $ to get cash on top of that American Express Serve prepaid debit card charges you $2.50 for each transaction and then their customer service sucks I was on hold for 40 minutes talk to about 4 different people about disputing a $30 transaction that they did not dispute or even try to help me out on top of that it was like they was happy to be rude and sense me getting upset that's what their customer is about?. That's disrespectful and no way to treat a customer

I have had AMEX for 30 years, that is until today...
1. Last year I contacted the concierge to take advantage of so well advertized - was on hold for over 1 hour(!). This is for $450 fee a year(platinum card). Downgraded to green card last august.
2. I did not feel like changing all the account information for recurring charges. I expected bad service, but for substantially less money ($95/year) - I WAS WRONG!
3. Representatives are well trained to... APOLOGIZE PROFUSELY!
4. Waste of your time is beyond your imagination waiting to be switched between different "TEAMS" - worthless.
5. AMEX is still a problem with being accepted overseas.
6 why pay annual fees? For what? There are plenty of cards with no annual fees and 6,6% interest - I got one! It is a beauty. And the customer service - EXCEPTIONAL - thank you CITI!
7. On the last day decided to cash in my rewards - guess what? - the site is not working! What do you get from the reps - WELL TRAINED PROFUSED APOLOGY and "0" result and you spend another 30 min on the phone.
8. If I did not have other cards, I would have been stranded while on vacation - different reps were feeding me all kinds of stories - all different. The new card was sent/received well after I came back from a 3 week vacation, I was without a card for a month! I asked to prorate my membership fee - the answer was NOOOOO. I will collect it through small claims court, but...

Customer service
January 21, 2017

I have heard wonderful things about american express and so when I was looking for something specific in a credit card I looked at american express options first. I have a great credit score and can get and card I want and have pre approved offers sent to me daily but I chose this card for one specific reason however I am not sure if their wording was ambiguous as I no longer have access to the original offer or if they just changed the offer after I applied but they added a charge of 225 when I specifically chose a card that was showing no fee for the use I needed. After speaking with customer service I am so turned off by american express I will never use this card and will speak to financial advisors on ways to cancel this card without affecting my credit.

And if you get a B. A. Amex right now you can earn 9000 Avios by Christmas. I am not selling them but just had to say they have the most fantastic customer service. I know businessses don't like them because of their charges, but that may be because they are paying for onshore excellent service people.

I have been a customer for 18 years and ordered gift cards on line for an awards ceremony. Never received or heard back so called to find out that they cancelled the order and didn't let me know. Did have the cards for the ceremony. Have spent an hour and a half on two phone calls so far and still have not cleared up the issue. Seems that no one can take the responsibility to help me. This is not how you treat a loyal customer of 18 years and will probably not be a customer for much longer.

Rewards Miles Stolen
August 15, 2016

When I signed up for Corporate Delta card they took my airlines miles number, said It would be linked and passed through. I just left my job in June and by August they said they had wiped my ******* miles. I paid 180 for the Delta card and used their card for purchases and in the end their service team refused to transfer miles in good faith. Extremely upsetting when you are counting on those for a trip with your son for his 13th birthday. Thanks AMEX!

I have had my card for years now. The customer service is the best, you don't hear that too much anymore. There rewards program is really great. Your can set up an account with Amazon and even pick items from there, and some others. I would highly recommend this card to anyone.

I love American Express and the customer service it had provided in the past. But unfortunately, their call centers are now being transferred to another country. I will not provide any sensitive information to representatives that are not located in the US. I requested to be transferred back to the US. This is "American" Express? Right?

Even their fraud department calls are transferred to India! :/ (Very Disappointing!)

Worst Website Design

Its funny that their name allocation on the account page is limited to only ten characters and despite of a human, the machine also reads one's name incorrectly. And after six months of continuous feedback they don't even care to fix it.

It is easy to apply, the procedure takes about a day, you can get it as a result of reward.
Great coverage, low interest rates and low maintenance cost.

I know companies complain about the high fees, but for consumers Amex cards are by far the best in terms of rewards and other perks like fraud protection and rental car insurance coverage. A number of American Express cards are now free and their travel services are also really useful. Consumer service is also very good. The only real downside is that more places don't take it. But that's okay if you have 1 backup card.

I am a senior citizen who is also a college student. I have read a lot of reviews on this company and they are ALL very good. That is why I signed up with this company to find me a part-time job to work from home after my classes.

I have had 3 different AMEX cards over the last 10+ years and customer service as well as the website have been outstanding. Compared to the websites and service with the 3 other major financial giants I have credit cards with (Chase, CITI and Barclays) I would rate AMEX the highest not just in terms of customer service and the website's usability but their credit cards have the best rewards programs available. I would especially recommend the Blue Cash Rewards American Express Card.
